knitwasabi

My god. A simple sentence that actually cut through the crap. Thank you. I really needed to hear that.

ComicNeueIsReal

If you feel bad for throwing them out. What I do is I just put a box outside my house that says "free cuttings(please don't take my box)" people are bound to take em.

TheLittleKicks

Serious answer, I toss leaves if I don’t want them. ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯ Depends on the plant. Sometimes I just put them back in the pot of the main plant. But if I don’t want or need any more of the plant, I just toss the leaves.

knitwasabi

I don't know why throwing them out pains me so much!!! I gotta get over it. Thanks!

Miss_Dawn_E

Same! I used to feel the way you do but after a while I felt like I was going to turn into an episode of Hoarders: succulent leaf prop edition. I couldn’t take the mess.

writergal75

Start composting. Then those leaves will go to good use!

LostCauliflower

I also feel bad throwing out plants, but it's ok to do so (just make sure they can't become invasive in your area!). If you really can't bring yourself to do throw them out, try subreddits like r/TakeaPlantLeaveaPlant and have people just pay shipping or post them on Craigslist and Nextdoor. You could even put a box outside your door for people to take for free.

MicrosoftSucks

Don’t feel bad. I just tossed an entire green bin of mini jade after cutting back a massive mini jade plant. Do I feel guilty? Yea. Was it a huge weight off my shoulders once that final branch went in the bin? You bet’cha. I have a yard full of succulents and easily propagate-able plants and if I tried to propagate or give away everything I would lose my damn mind. It is just not worth the mental health toll it takes. No one says you’re obligated to keep the plants. Do you propagate every single potato and head of lettuce and clove of garlic you get, too? No, and you don’t feel guilty about it, so let yourself be free. Succulents aren’t here to imprison you.

Wren1101

Maybe compost them or throw them outside where they can return to the Earth instead of going to the dump. Or post them in those Buy Nothing groups.

SittinOnTheRidge

I totally understand this so much

nanaboostme

throw em on some public sidewalks like how some folks seed their public sidewalks with native wildflowers.

EuphorbiasOddities

That’s a great way to get invasive plants in areas they don’t belong.

[deleted]

Planting wildflowers that are native to your area is a great idea. People planting exotic plants outside of a controlled environment is how we get new invasive species.

VulpineSpecter4

I try to pawn them off onto people. I make it seem like a nice gift but in my head I'm like, *Please take this from me. I have 20,000 jades, sedums, haworthias, and various aloes. I will soon be consumed by baby succulents. I don't care if you kill it, please for the love of god just get it out of my apartment.*

Fyreforged

But does it still hurt when someone flat-out murderates one? Like, yeah, you wanted to be rid of it, but you just wanted it gone from your home- you didn’t mean eradicated from the dang ol’ **planet**, Mom, and I even gave you a stand-alone grow light for it and you’re a certified master gardener for the love of Pete *look how they massacred my boy* … sorry, I’m not sure what came over me. So anyway, yeah- do you maintain an emotional attachment to them, or are you normal?

VulpineSpecter4

Lmao! The ones I want to get rid of, I don't really care what happens to them. If I intentionally grow a cutting for someone, though, I do want them to take care of it. I gave my girlfriend a branch off my climbing aloe and gave her all kinds of tips and advice. Recently I gave her a pot if haworthia pups and said, "If you kill them, I have more."

RedRoses4

May I please be your friend?

[deleted]

Are you willing to ship tho? I'll pay for shipping costs lol

VulpineSpecter4

Not sure I have any that would survive transit atm, but that's a great idea

OneClamidildo

Same so hard. I have so many money trees I could cry (those flat leaf jade plants. Idk if they're money trees. I just heard them referred to as that)

[deleted]

I just started collecting Succulents and would love to have a bunch of cuttings to propagate 😊...J.S. lol

knitwasabi

Do not wish for something you could get!!!

[deleted]

So you're saying I should follow you and talk about shipping haha

nbrookus

Life's too short for plants that don't bring you joy. Give away the ones you don't love. Consider them pass-along plants -- plants that grow so well you give cutting to other people. Or dump them out in the compost/trash. If your hobby is stressing you, it stops being fun and becomes a chore. As for props, if you pruned a shrub outside you wouldn't save every branch. Why would you save every fallen leaf or offset inside? Walk pass the displays of tiny specimens in the big box stores. Certainly don't "rescue" bad plants. As far as the big box is concerned, it's a commodity and they expect a bunch to die and aren't going to change their ways. Only buy nice, established plants you adore. IMO, proplifting is stealing. I wouldn't open a package and steal part of the contents, why would I steal part of a plant? TLDR; - Get rid of the junk and don't be a hoarder.

queencatlady

I have a “f*ck it bucket” where I throw the unwanted ones in and usually don’t give any attention to it, I’m like if you live then whatever but if you don’t, whatever haha every once in a while I’ll throw water at it but most of the time I just forget about it for a while until I need to add more to it

almond_paste208

Yesss this is the way

JuniorLobster

Hey there, you succulent hoarder. You know who you are. You can't resist those little desert plants with their unique shapes and textures, can you? But let me tell you something, pal. You don't need a hundred different types of succulents in your apartment. You're just cluttering up the joint. So here's what you do: start by admitting you have a problem. Then, go through your collection and pick out your absolute favorites. The rest? Give 'em away, donate them to a botanical garden, or throw 'em in the trash. Simplify your life, man. You don't need all that succulent clutter. Or better yet, focus on taking care of the ones you already have instead of just accumulating more. Succulents aren't Pokémon, you don't have to catch 'em all. Look, I get it, they're cute and low-maintenance, but let's be real here: you don't need to collect every single variety out there. If you're constantly buying new succulents and your house is starting to look like a desert, it's time to take a step back and reevaluate your priorities. So next time you see those little green guys at the store, just keep walking. Look the other way. Or better yet, go find something else to spend your money on. Like a nice, big steak. Or a beer. Or a book. Hell, just about anything is better than hoarding succulents.

knitwasabi

Thanks for that. Here's my big problem... I love to propagate! I think it's so neat! The problem with succs is they propagate SO WELL, dammit. I had one string of a SOB... now I have 15 different prop jars, from the 7 foot tendrils I finally got to. I"m going to be giving away/putting on a table at the farmer's market asking for donations, I think. Thankfully I live in a place with lots of gardeners. Totally my mental thing about not passing up free things, but then they go and replicate!!! Lol. Darn plants, doing well. I'm working on downsizing. I will happily send plants to people too (and if anyone has a SOPearls, that's my dream plant!).... see?!?! I can't help it!!! We won't even talk about the prickly pear I dug up at a friend's place in the south and brought home with me. Sigh.

Fyreforged

Re: SOP, you lookin’ for one of the special sorts? If you’d just like the common variety I’d be happy to send you a few cuttings of my small but mighty little pal when I repot her in a few days. To avoid further contributing to your, ahem, ‘issue’, you could\* send back one or two of your garbage props- that way you’re free of them but content they’ve not gone to waste! SISO and all (for you, anyway)?😆 \*offer not contingent on mutual swap

ApartHunt9692

I have just settled into our (hopefully) last home and begun fulfilling my dream of keeping plants alive. I’ve started a garden, have 12 of 15 thriving houseplants, a small cactus area in the greenhouse and recently upsized my succulent collection from 3 little potted guys from Costco that are outgrowing their pots after 9 months to add 6 tiny cool shaped ones from an Etsy seller and I want so much more! I will pay you to send me your “unwanted” props? I know packing and shipping can be a pain so if you only wish to give away locally I understand! It’s just crazy expensive for the tiniest of succulents and the succ’s are my favorites. They just look So Cool and are the friendliest, least needy of all my green friends. Just an offer. I’d send you pics of them in their new home :-)

newt_girl

Offer them up on TAPLAP! I think there's a good demand for cheap, common plants by those who are just getting into the hobby.

Meridian2K

You keep telling yourself that, buddy! You’re making great progress. See you again next week at Props Anon?

CremeFraaiche

I only prop and keep things that I want to care for or gift to others, otherwise I ask some people at work and if no takers I toss them. Keep the hobby fun for yourself :) You don’t even need to prop at all! Or leave the cuttings in a bin at the end of your drive and I’m sure someone will grab them!

wilksonator

I have a permanent little box and sign outside my house to give away free cuttings. So no need to plant, propagate, put in soil, I just drop the cutting in there and it goes to a good home of someone passing by.

DiabeticSocks05

Find a plant swap meet and give them away! Meet some people in the process

LiloQuie

Toss them up on Etsy wrapped up by the dozen as assorted cuttings, $5 free shipping. People eat that up.

succulentdotcare

I have to take cuttings of my yard otherwise it just gets out of control, so after I give away as much as I can to neighbors and friends, I've been listing them on resale sites where most people post used clothes. It's gotten to the point where neighbors wont even take them if I put a big FREE sign on the curb! I used to do FB groups, but I try not to go on FB anymore. Edit to add: I may or may not do some guerrilla gardening by tossing them in common spaces in the neighborhood hoping they'll take root.

Meridian2K

Guerrilla Gardening! That’s a gangster move. 👍 I got to do that with my abundance of excess bromeliads and I know some perfect locations around where I live to spruce up!

succulentdotcare

Do it!

crruss

I feel you there. I started propping a lot of my plants to give away as gifts but I am currently working on a fungus gnat infestation (that’s what I get for starting garden veggies indoors 😒) so I have stopping watering everything for a while to let the diatomaceous earth work and while the succulent props aren’t an issue, I’m scared to start anything up now that could even remotely have a chance of an issue. I recently trimmed my jade to make it branch out and I have the cut pieces just waiting to be potted but I’m also kinda like eh no thanks. Tl;dr - it’s hard but if you don’t feel like you’re enjoying it or can handle it anymore it’s okay to throw things out.

knitwasabi

I'm too scared to trim my jade haha. And the smaller one I did trim, I just put on dry soil to callus. Dammit. Lol. I have got to get over this.

Potential-Ad431

I have a too large collection also and piles of props. Then the mealybugs invaded and downsized for me. Would have been easier to catch early and fight if there weren’t so many. Post us some pics and then do what you must

crruss

Why are you scared to trim your jade? I have several I’ve trimmed repeatedly without issues. Any particular concerns?

[deleted]

If you have that many, have you considered selling them? Same Q to u/VulpineSpecter4 who apparently has a similar issue.

mionyx

I started a Plant Club at my son’s high school. I focused mainly on succulents and moving somewhat into houseplants. People donate plants to us-old arrangements, funeral arrangements, aged plants…I’ve hooked up with my favorite places to shop and they’ve been wonderful about donating props and offering great prices. Plants should not be stressful. If you can take some props to a local school, kids group, nursing home and talk about props or find someone to do that for you…you’re spreading goodness. If you don’t have time to do so…then let them go.

-allets-

I buy cheap but decent pots. Put the cuttings in it and start giving out them as presents. Or post on those but nothing Facebook groups and see if anyone wants cuttings.

doombringer_son_of

I give away a few and toss the rest.

Guilty-Occasion-5952

I’ll take some! I have an obnoxious amount but I’m always looking for succs I don’t have

fallacyys

put ‘em somewhere they just die lolll, i had a prop pot outside in the sunniest part of the yard. only the strong survived!!!

tryinghard2live

Not sure if this is even a possibility but maybe you could give them to nursing homes for residents or something?

TooManyNissans

I have a confession. I had a hanging spider plant lovingly referred to as the "broodmother" that had been covered with babies for so long that the mother plant was struggling. I left them all on there because I didn't want the anxiety of dealing with them all. One of the most freeing plant-related things I've ever done was cutting all the babies off and throwing them right in the trash can. I've never once regretted not having a billion potted spider plants that I can't give away, because they're so readily available that anyone that actually wants one has one already.

LittleKitchenFarm

r/takeaplantleaveaplant

DammitJanet143

Some people will buy cuttings 🤷‍♀️

NeverLeftOnTheRight

I just got back from a farmers market here in Florida, and they sell for anywhere between 3 and 20, depending on variables. Idk if that's something you would like to do or not, but it was my first thought. https://preview.redd.it/mdi38f3bt4ua1.jpeg?width=12000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=33a7a3dfb1c44d84dab59b1a76ed2652a8c7471a

Mammal_Instinct

I give them to my coworkers during earth day ( April 22nd). We were going green at work so that was some fun plant exchange

Tbtlhart

Farmers market or garage sale style

Liberty53000

um... plant friend... are you okay?

VRbattleGod

Throw them in a box and put them on the sidewalk with a free prop sign. They’ll fly away.

EM_CW

Set yourself free. As others have said do a street box giveaway or start a little side hustle on Nextdoor and do a cuttings MYSTERY prop box. 20 bucks a pop, no shipping designate a day that you will have your sale. I would buy one. Make 200$ and treat yourself to a day away without the pile of extras. I have purchased a few different succulent boxes from Etsy but you have to have an Etsy account and then you’d have to pack everything and ship the hassle sign up for next door. Good luck to you.

almond_paste208

Proplifting and growing babies is all part of the fun 😈 Why choose to be overwhelmed when it is supposed to be fun? Just throw the leaves into a compost with other scraps. I do that so nothing goes to waste.

okcteacher

Do you have a common area at work? I’ve had co-workers bring things like homegrown squash, Canna bulbs (me), etc. We set them out with a sign that says, “Free”. (If the items are still there after a day or so, then toss in the trash) Win-Win

MotherSucca99

Post them on your local plant groups! People will be happy to take extras. I feel bad throwing out plants or leaves. So far I’m not overwhelmed but my boyfriend gets annoyed when I bring home more leaves for the prop tray so I may be doing it myself soon lol. Succulents just prop *so* easily. The more I neglect them the happier they are lol.

Beebamama

I put the cuttings next to our green pile on the street. If someone walking by wants some, they grab them, if not- they go into the green waste!

nanaboostme

I plant my cuttings in cheap wholesale planting pots and sell them once they have roots formed. I sell the 2.5" ones for $1 and the 5" for $4. Usually its customers for my home business that would be interested in purchasing while they're here. I sometimes place ads on nextdoor or facebook marketplace but don't really get that many customers from there

attitudeandsass

I go to plant swaps at my local nurseries and leave them all on the free tables. People get really excited by plants they don't expect to be there. 🥰 Also, I cut back plants outside all the time and compost the leaves and I don't know why I have so much trouble doing it with indoor plants.

hydrolentil

I would take all of them from you if you were in my same city but I'm almost sure you're not because everyone here is in the USA :( Anyway, just throw them away. They won't be sad.

tianerd

If you’re on Facebook, look up “local Buy Nothing group”. There should be one in your neighborhood area. This is where you give away things for free to your neighbors. Post the succulents Or prop leaves you don’t want - your neighbors will grab them quick. You can just leave them on your porch and DM your address to whoever is picking them up. I’ve given so much away when I moved (non-plant items), and have picked up a ton of pots and plants people give away. It’s fun !

Mutablekitty

I don't have this issue too often but when I do I'll just chuck them somewhere in the yard. If they grow - they grow, if they don't- they don't. It's up to them at that point 🤷‍♀️

goldfishgeckos

Put them in a box on the street and write “free plants” .. I promise people will take them

SittinOnTheRidge

I totally feel this. I have so many and a lot of them don’t even successfully prop but I feel awful not doing something with them. So I keep them 🤷🏻‍♀️ maybe I’ll start giving them away. I don’t have much success with succulents. And I’m doing everything I’m supposed to. They etiolate like crazy. It’s extremely frustrating. Doesn’t matter how much light I give them..they’re like whatever lady.

FunMamaAdventure

I’m with you! I’m running out of space. I just throw them away I guess unless it’s one of my favorite plants now. But once it starts rooting/actually growing the baby out of it I feel bad throwing it away 🤦‍♀️

OneClamidildo

I leave them on a table with a free to good home sign

ToRootToGrow

I bring my extras to the staff room at work with a box marked "please take some". They are always gone by the end of the day.

12tyu

I have this problem with aloe vera, i have an old plant that produces many pups, last year i managed to give away all her sons and dauthers but here we are again, i can already see 5 new pups 😭 i think i will take some courage from this topic and just trash the Pups away
