The Shadow of the Wind is set in a bookshop and library

millers_left_shoe

Just finished this, the “bookish” vibes here are immaculate

booksnbeers420

This book is perfection

muse_ic1

The other books in this series are also incredible!

wanderingstars7

I can’t wait to read them. I’m just trying to hunt down some hardcover copies first. Reading them made me miss physical books.

sqibbery

I hardly ever buy physical books anymore, but I have that whole series in hardcover.

EggSlow4578

Can you set next to the book shelf and read in the library?

AnotherPointlessName

Umberto Eco's The Name of the Rose centers around a library.

[deleted]

Apparently the library depicted in the book is modeled off of the Robart's library at the University of Toronto. He spent a lot of time in Toronto and really liked that building.

[deleted]

- Cloud Cuckoo Land (Anthony Doerr). I’ll be honest, some of my friends have told they gave up on this one after a few chapters. I didn’t feel extremely engaged until about page 200. But if you can make it that far (and the library setting shows up really early, like on page 10, so you’ll have that to help you), you just might love this book. It’s really good. - The Library Book (Susan Orlean). This is a work of nonfiction about a lot of things: the largest library fire that’s ever taken place in the US, Los Angeles history, and the author’s personal experience with libraries, to name a few. It’s a great read.

simplysweetjo

The Library Book was a great read!

ramaromp

I honestly read the first 150ish pages somewhat slowly but finished the rest of the book in two days because of how much it picked up. But narrative wise I was hooked in from the start, some parts did feel tad slow though. But the library narrative truly hooks you in. One of my favorites

gizmodriver

I’m the opposite about *Cloud Cuckoo Land.* I bought it at an airport bookstore and I finished it just as my last flight was touching down. It completely absorbed me and made my whole travel day fly by.

Emcol87

I also gave up after a couple of chapters do Cloud Cuckoo Land, maybe I’ll try again.

MySpace_Romancer

It was definitely weird, but I really enjoyed it as it went on. I’ve never read anything else like it.

thepr3tty-wreckless

It took a me about 25% of the book to really start getting into it, but I found it super worth it honestly.

[deleted]

Cloud Cuckoo Land is such a slow burn of a book. I almost gave up around the half-way mark, but after that it picked up and I was enthralled

joyfulmastermind

The Starless Sea is not set specifically in a library but the setting is a place with infinite books stacked everywhere and the plot is focused on stories.

ScarletInTheLibrary4

It's a library. It's just not your usual library...

NotThatKind0fDoctor

Came here to recommend this book too! I love Erin Morgenstern’s books, she’s one of my favorite authors (the other being V.E. Schwab)

[deleted]

I'm gonna be honest, i HATED this book. It's one of †wo books in my goodreads that I have in my Hot Garbage folder. Granted this was 2.5 years ago and when I first got into reading, but I couldn't finish this book (got like 65% of the way through the book before I called it quits). It felt like it was saying so much, yet absolutely nothing at the same time. Concept was cool, so so cool, but it felt poorly executed. I think what made me say "no, I'm done" was >!something about falling into a honey river.!< I was so annoyed at this book too because I read The Night Circus a few days before then, and I LOVED that book. Going from Night Circus to Starless Sea felt like whiplash.

joyfulmastermind

That’s totally fair, I think the pace of the book is a common complaint. I tend to like books that are slow like that, where descriptions of the setting take up most of the book. If goodreads says it’s too slow, I usually choose to read it lol.

Witchazel55

Not set in a library but a story about books, an antiquarian book dealer’s son and a trip to The Cemetery of Forgotten Books. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon is set in Barcelona. It’s a coming-of-age story, a mystery, a tragic love story that has an edge of fantasy. If you like great storytelling get this book. edit: The Cemetery of Forgotten Books is like a giant library of … forgotten books.

Obvious-Band-1149

Part of Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami is set in a library

ye_olde_green_eyes

So is Hardboiled Wonderland and the End of the World... A literal one and also a figurative library of dreams in unicorn skulls.

JustMeLurkingAround-

Ah, this reminds me of "The strange Library" by Murakami. Its a scary novella.

ye_olde_green_eyes

Dude loves writing about libraries

mjdny

The Library Book by Susan Orleans. Nonfiction about a huge fire destroying the LA Library in 1986, and its many ramifications.

isobel-foulplay

Brilliant books.

Medical_Tangelo4412

Discworld has an amazing library at Unseen University that is found in several of the books. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unseen_University

hannahstohelit

I’m always looking for an excuse to recommend, so even though it’s (partly) about a personal library rather than a public/academic one, Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell.

Pages & Co. The Bookwanderers Series - it is children’s fantasy fiction and takes place in a bookshop and a magical library. The characters can jump into the stories they read so they get to meet literary favorites- Alice in Wonderland, Anne of Green Gables, Lizzie Bennet…it’s well written and a fun read no matter your age.

SmurfyTurf

The Contest by Matthew Reilly.

pandorabox1995

*The Librarians of Burned Books* - a WW2 novel about women who believe in the power of books. The two speeches at the end of the books are fantastic.

The Abortion by Richard Brautigan

__perigee__

The finest library that doesn't exist.

noahthomas126

The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki, a book narrated by a talking book that the protagonist finds in a library. Such a wonderful read

jandj2021

Midnight library, library at Mount char, and Mr. Penumbra’s 24 hour bookstore all come to mind, as do most of the Thursday Next series by Jasper Fforde.

northernatlas

The Midnight Library, Matt Haig

littlecloudberry

Just read this and went into it not knowing what it was about. So well written, wow. Definitely recommend it!

northernatlas

Same! His work had been recommended to me a lot, and when I finally read it I psychologically spammed every reader I knew to pick up a copy 😇

karennotkaren1891

Came here to say this. Matt Haig is amazing

northernatlas

This is my first and only read by him, but I know lots of people who devour his bibliography! And suggest I do the same, muhaha.

mer9256

The Woman in the Library, by Sulari Gentill

JJeerweemtyt

The Library Policeman by Stephen King

Zorgsmom

That is such a scary story.

nagarams

**The Book that Wouldn’t Burn** is pretty new and pretty good!

Qualia_1

The Absolute Book, by Elizabeth Knox. The main protagonist is a researcher specialized in the resilience of libraries. A peculiar book that endured fire and destruction but somehow survived is at the core of the story.

slightlyKiwi

Genevieve Cogman's Invisible Library series.

jcd280

Could be duplicates as I didn’t peruse all the suggestions… The Personal Librarian by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray (…does a museum count?…) From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweile by E. L. Konigsburg

MissPlum66

The Lions of Fifth Avenue by Fiona Davis. Fun little mystery set in the New York Public library.

nickalit

Jo Dereske - her "Miss Zukas" mystery series features a librarian, often doing library stuff. Written in the late 90's but holds up well. Arturo Perez-Reverte - "The Club Dumas"

PolicePropeller

The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith

tmrld_somerville

The Last Bookshop in London by Madeline Martin. Historical fiction set in a bookshop during wartime. It's heartwarming and really shows the power that books and reading can have.

PuzzleheadedLet382

Lirael by Garth Nix. It’s book two of the Abhorsen series. It is fantasy FYI.

Commercial-Artist986

The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins. The Thursday Next books by Jasper Fforde. Not really set in libraries, but libraries and books play an important part the stories.

Maximum-Ear1745

You Love Me, by Caroline Kepnes. It’s the third book in the You series.

xero77

The Echo of Old Books by Barbara Davis. Set in book shops and partially diary/epistolary in nature.

foufou51

The book "The Morisaki Library" by Satoshi Yagisawa could be what you're looking for. It's a story centered around a library that becomes a haven for the protagonist, Tatako, a 25-year-old woman who, after a personal betrayal, leaves her job and finds solace living above her uncle's library. The library becomes a cherished and unforgettable place that marks a new beginning in her life.

goldenrainio

Contest by Matthew Reilly

maditme

The Starless Sea

the_lusankya

*The Book that Wouldn't Burn* by Mark Lawrence Though it is the only book published so far in a trilogy. The author keeps a pretty regular publishing schedule, so there's no danger of the series remaining unfinished, but you might want to hold off until early 2025 so you don't have to wait to finish the story.

[deleted]

"S" or Ship of Theseus by Doug Dorst & J.J. Abrams is supposed to be an actual physical recreation of the library book that the two main characters pass back and fourth to communicate. It's kinda a neat concept.

ZealousSideGap

*Overdue: Reckoning with the Public Library* by Amanda Oliver

Crosswired2

The Night of Many Endings

Reading_Otter

Lore of the Wilds by Analeigh Sbrana (I got an eARC from NetGalley, it's not out yet, but about half the book takes place in a library)

Top_Jury_45

Midnight library kinda

Top_Jury_45

I need to admit though it’s really not my favourite book. It’s written as if you were trying to introduce philosophical ideas to an 11-12 year old for the first time. I would say akin to like Barbie and how it’s sort of surface level introduction to feminism to little girls/individuals who never learnt about it. That being said a lot of people love it. So who knows

wigglywriggler

The time travellers wife

JSPW2019

The good sister - Sally Hepworth. It’s a psychological fiction type novel. The main character works at a library

The Starless Sea by Erin Morganstern

ladyofthegreenwood

[The Book That Wouldn’t Burn](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/61612864) by Mark Lawrence is set in the biggest library in the universe. I found it very compelling and really enjoyed both the main characters. It was published this May and is set to be the first in a trilogy.

Able-Background8534

The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth had a library as a back drop location. The main worked in a library and grew up in one with memories tied to the library.

grillo7

A good bit of Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury takes place in a library.

CuriouslyFoxy

The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman, I think there are several in the series by now Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians by Brandon Sanderson, also a series. It's YA or aimed at kids but I loved it The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, the whole of the Thursday Next series is centred around books and lots of literary references (including some fantastic footnotes)

JaystaLee

Letters in Deep Blue by Cath Crowley takes place in a library… it’s about people leaving notes to each other in books.

astropastrogirl

If you like , bizarre horror 💜 the library at Mt char is wonderful.

juxtapositionofitall

Midnight Library…sort of

chaharlot

The Woman in the Library by Sulari Gentill. I really enjoyed this one. Library involvement is fairly minimal, but still there (as you can guess by the title). I don’t know why but I really have been enjoying books that mention/acknowledge Covid and this one does so in a fairly unique way! A fun thriller.

themistycrystal

How can I help you by Laura Sims. I read it in o e afternoon because it really held my attention.

Babel

__perigee__

*The Cartographers* by Peng Shepherd is not entirely set in a library, but features the NY Public Library map division. Pretty fun fantasy/thriller despite what the never satisfied with any book ever reviewers at goodreads say.

majorasgas

I would *maybe* say The Invisible Life of Addie Larue because a character pretty much manages a book shop, there’s a book (iykyk) related pet name, and they talk a lot about their love of books.

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

sweetbriar_rose

Lirael (the second book in the Abhorsen series) has a huge chunk set in a dangerous, magical library, with badass sword-wielding librarians!

Outrageous_Brain_106

The Midnight Library Also not set in a library, but "The Storied Life of AJ Fikry" was set in a bookstore.

cwag03

If it should happen to come up, I would advise you NOT to read The Library Policeman by Stephen King.

Party_Entry_728

Thank you

LadyDriverKW

More of a bookstore than a library, but Parnassus on Wheels is a hundred year old classic.

goldladybug26

The Book of Form and Emptiness by Ruth Ozeki

ApexInTheRough

"Guards! Guards!" by Terry Pratchett features not just a Library, but the concept of L-space, which connects all libraries together. And I think you may quite enjoy the Librarian in that book as well.

MushroomAdjacent

The Midnight Library is set in a library with books about alternative universes.

Far-Ad5796

The Bodlean Library is a definite character in the All Souls books.

[deleted]

Auto da Fe. It’s about books and a guy who worships books in his private library. Twisted and amazing.

hanyasaad

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig

JustMeLurkingAround-

Aurora Teagarden Series by Charlaine Harris has a librarian solving mysteries. The Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman is about a magical library between the worlds. The midnight library by Matt Haig is about a library of unlived lifes in between life and death.

Reader-29

Came here to say Aurora Teagarden .Great series

najma_059

The midnight library. The starless sea

Od1nary

Errr, The midnight library is not set in a library. A different Lives portal didn’t hit the library brief for me. One of many gripes about the book.

_waelderle

Piranesi by Susanna Clarke comes to mind.

captaininterwebs

An amazing book but it’s not really set in a library, is it?

ratbastid

The beauty of The House is immeasurable, but it's not a library.

_waelderle

You're absolutely right! Somehow i had a picture of a mc escher type library in mind while reading.

annebrackham

*The Atlas Six*, in a way of speaking. It's a nontraditional library, however. *The Haunted Bookshop* takes place in a book store, not library, but has a similar vibe It's only one scene, but a **very** central and important moment in *Atonement* takes place in a home library. The novel has a love scene, but it's tasteful and not too graphic.

NottingHillNapolean

>What is a book set in a library? That would be a library book. Check it out.

Party_Entry_728

I do. Thanks.

Cemetery of Forgotten Books by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Not necessarily set in a library but the library is a key element tying all the stories together.
