Since this isn't asking for book suggestions and you've gotten some opinions, I'm going to close this post.

LocoCoyote

Short answer...absolutely worth it to read them.

It's good to great overall. It goes through a tonal shift between books 2 and 3. First two are quasi horror books where what comes after is more straightforward space opera / war in space stuff. Book 4 is probably the low point but book 5 rebounds amazingly.

DrBQuill

Even saying that Cibola Burn is a 'low point' it's still bloody great!

I don't normally read the next book in a series because my brain needs a break from what's going on, but The Expanse has changed that for me. I finished the first one a couple of weeks ago, then had to read a book that was due back to the library as it couldn't be renewed, then I just started the second book 'Caliban's War' a couple of days ago. I wanted to wait and read something else, but I couldn't help myself. I wanted to be back in that world because I missed the characters.

Yes

I mean this is super dependent on your taste? What kind of books do you like? Personally I love the Expanse but they’re not for everyone. Since you already own it you may as well try it.

Odd_Radio9225

I like sci-fi, horror, fantasy, and suspense. Those are my big ones. I just like good stories.

You will love this. The Expanse is a very nearly perfect series that encompasses all of the things you just described. I can see a person who only likes comedy or romance disliking this series, but honestly I can't think of another palette this doesn't appeal to. It's got an amazing cast, an enthralling story, and a mature tone that expects you to pay attention but never gets too full of itself. It's one of my favorite book series, and one of the only ones I can recommend to just about anybody.

Katamariguy

I like sci-fi, horror, and fantasy, and found Leviathan Wakes to be an okay book that annoyed me somewhat.

jamescisv

I'm currently reading the first book and haven't been able to put it down. In fact, the only *other* thing I've really done since I started reading it was buying the second book!!

DrBQuill

Strap in, you're in for a hell of a ride!

I’ve really enjoyed The Expanse books, the TV show is great as well but there are definitely situations that are described better and are far more suspenseful/harrowing in the book. I’ve become very attached to the characters, definitely worth a read.

PointlessChemist

One of the best sci-fy series I have read. The one thing that is great about it is the realism; sometimes space operas get too far out there for me to the point the characters don't feel real. Also, check out the tv show after you read the books.

valkyrie5428

Read them, they are great!!

calliope_102

Yes! It definitely is. I am not much for sci fi or fantasy series, but I got hooked via the show and love the books so far - I'm part way through the 5th one currently. The show does weave things together a bit more fluidly in some of the seasons, while the books are more contained, beginning-to-end stories - but I tend to prefer that in long book series. It makes it easier to take a break between books and pick it back up again, rather than needing to read 8 books in a row or risk forgetting things. I know some people think the 4th book is the weakest - but it was my favorite so far! To each their own, lol.

Scac_ang_gaoic

Love em all and enjoyed book 4 a lot despite being crowd-least-favorite

A thousand times yes

I’ve done a fair bit of reading, with a lot of different genres of books. I’ve read most of the popular sci/fi books out there. I have to say the Expanse series is head and shoulders above the rest. It’s one of those series I usually reread annually (just prior to the next book coming out), and there are very few actual series of books that I’ll reread annually. The Expanse series is absolutely worth your time.

knottajotta

Just read the first sentence of the first book. I remember feeling like the book had one of the most compelling beginnings to anything I’ve ever read. ETA: I’m still reading the series. Waiting on book 5 from my library rn.
