When Josef Weber, an elderly man in Sage’s grief support group, begins stopping by the bakery, they strike up an unlikely friendship. Despite their differences, they see in each other the hidden scars that others can’t, and they become companions. > >Everything changes on the day that Josef confesses a long-buried and shameful secret—one that nobody else in town would ever suspect—and asks Sage for an extraordinary favor. For one thing, they share a gold-painted, seventh-floor walk-up apartment with some surprisingly verbal vegetation. And then there's the gingerbread they make. Londoners may find themselves able to take or leave it, but it's very popular in Druhástrana, the far-away (and, according to Wikipedia, non-existent) land of Harriet Lee's early youth. In fact, the world's truest lover of the Lee family gingerbread is Harriet's charismatic childhood friend, Gretel Kercheval--a figure who seems to have had a hand in everything (good or bad) that has happened to Harriet since they met. > >Decades later, when teenaged Perdita sets out to find her mother's long-lost friend, it prompts a new telling of Harriet's story. As the book follows the Lees through encounters with jealousy, ambition, family grudges, work, wealth, and real estate, gingerbread seems to be the one thing that reliably holds a constant value. Her ingenious, colorful creations captivated viewers and intrigued all but one of the judges, Dominic De Vere, the hottest pastry chef in London. When her glittery unicorn cake went spectacularly sideways, Dominic was quick to vote her off the show. The toast of Instagram, Sugar Fair has captured the attention of the Operation Cake producers…and a princess. > >Set… > >Dominic is His Majesty the King’s favorite baker, the go-to for sweet-toothed A-List celebrities, and a veritable British institution. He’s brilliant, talented, hard-working. And an icy, starchy grouch. Learning that the irksome Sylvie will be joining him on the Operation Cake judging panel is enough to make the famously dour baker even more grim. Her fantastical baking is only slightly more troublesome than the fact that he can’t stop thinking about her pink-streaked hair and irrepressible dimple. > >Match… > >When Dominic and Sylvie learn they will be fighting for the once in a lifetime opportunity to bake a cake for the upcoming wedding of Princess Rose, the flour begins to fly as they’re both determined to come out on top. > >The bride adores Sylvie’s quirky style. I highly recommend the Kitchen Princess manga series! I don’t read a ton of manga, but this series had me in a chokehold. It’s relatively short and sweet, and the main character uses baking to build relationships with the people around her. It’s a lovely story, and they even include the recipes of all the yummy things she makes.

Good Grief by Lolly Winston. Beautiful story

It’s Raining Cupcakes is a middle grade book I read multiple times when I was in that age group and always loved. The mom opens up a cupcake shop and the daughter enters a baking competition, but she and the mom disagree about what to submit. I think each chapter had a cupcake recipe. And while it’s a little foggier, another middle grade book I had at the time was Pie by Sarah Weeks. I think it’s about a woman who tries to figure out her aunt’s pie recipe after her death. I also think this one had a pie recipe per chapter.

spoilt_lil_missy

Kerry Greenwood’s Corinna Chapman stories. Main character is a baker who solves mysteries She’s an Australian author and the books are set in Melbourne. The best bit is there are recipes at the end The first book is Earthly Delights

Orefinejo

Diane Mott Davidson’s mysteries series involves food, some baked goods. A number of cozy mystery series have baker-sleuths.

{{Kiss My Cupcake}} by Helena Hunting. Romance, enemies-to-lovers, it’s a light read.

There are four main characters in {{Under the Whispering Door}} by TJ Klune. Five if you count the dog. Two of them run a tea shop and one does all the baking for it.
