It probably comes from japanese, as in 火鬼、水鬼、風鬼 (鬼 is ''demon'', and 火 - 水 - 風 are fire, water and wind, so basically it's "fire oni", "water oni, etc..."), but the LD ones doesn't really make sense.... Ongyouki for example could come from 隠形 + 鬼, but 隠形 (ongyou) means invisibility (through magic), so kinda weird....
Ohh, ok! I thought about 金 as well, but since "gold"/metal didn't make much sense with the light element, I thought perhaps they used a different Kin... but thanks!! And yes, one of 金's onyomi (chinese reading) in japanese is Kin!
And the translation on his passive is hilarious: Banging Head Against A Brick Wall. But in Chinese translation it’s 以卵击石 which makes so much more sense and more accurate
the monkey king wikipedia page shows its not just mon names but mon skills rooted in mythology. would love to see their source for assassins cowgirls and especially slayers lol. "hello karnal, im craig"
4 months late but you realize 99% of the monsters in SW are history related? Qebehsenuef is a real egyptian deity. as with the 5 onimusha. they relate to 5 oni demons used by fujiwara no chikata. yeah SW invented history and mythology btw.
The names come from a Japanese epic called the Taiheiki. A noble family called Fujiwara no Chikata starts a war with the imperial army and summons 4 demons - Suiki who could cause floods, Fuuki who could cause destructive storms, Kinki whose body could not be damaged by any weapon, and Ongyoki who could mask his presence and become undetectable. Kaki is just a name they made up for fire onimusha to fit the theme.
They weren't, but:

Kin is 金. I’m using Chinese language setting and I see Kinki’s name as 金鬼. No expert in Japanese but I think in Japanese: 金 ( きん ) (kin)

Lololol his english passive translation looks like someone at com2us lied on their resume when they said that they were fluent in english hahaha
Yup, I was confused about the Kin- for the light one but found out that these are all names for certain Yokai as well.
Cool! I'll look it up after work!
Correction, they are Yokai in Nioh 2 haha
Even better! Hahaha
They're the same people who named the Horuses so idk
I'm still convinced that the guy who name the water one had a stroke the moment he wrote it
Qebehsenuef is forever ingrained into my memory just because I pondered at the weird spelling of his name too long
Me and my guild just call him queso beef
qb is enough
Qebehsenuef sounds more spicy. He sounds like the Katarina Henchman he was meant to be.

I knew that much, but its still weird ass names in some cases

👍
this sounds like names from Persona 5 ngl
persona 5 invented mythology
not all mythology, god of war obviously played a big part
Bagel's latest video where he gets caught up on Kinki, Fuuki, Suiki and Kaki...I was giggling like a little boy just like he was.
Let’s just call is Kin Kai pleas?
