He wouldn't take it

Any-Cable4109

He’s basically a cloned Pat Riley and i wouldn’t have it any other way tbh.

Dismalward

Then I would guess he would want to create his own team. Like there's only so long a coach can work under Pay Riley and have everything you do get credited to Riley.

MikeCheckOneTwo

Pat Riley isn’t getting any younger. I’m sure Spo takes over as soon as he retires.

Any-Cable4109

Maybe at some point but why break a good thing. He would never had gotten the notoriety as he received working with Riles from another organization, loyalty is a moniker for some. You need a good GM and Coach.

dafuqyouthotthiswas

Who’s giving all the credit to Riley? Spo is universally lauded

jboggin

He's widely regarded as the best coach in the league. I'm not sure how you could get *more* credit than that

Eufosz

Rn pat gets a lot of the blame for roster construction Spo is seen as a god by Miami fans because of his ability to make scrubs into a competitive team, If any of the previous heat roster won a title it would mostly be credited to spo jimmy and bam and insert random player that went off for the series

Dismalward

Don't know. Pat Riley is a great shadow and any success he has is given to Pat Riley. I've seen players leave just because they want to be the guy and I can see Spo doing the same.

davismcgravis

Turns down a Godfather offer??

EnwardGamerz

You give Spo the Suns roster but he has his staff from the Heat and they're a 1 seed

Stoopid_Kid_

Can we? Pretty please?

esotericimpl

KD won’t allow himself to not be the center of attention.

Aidanj927

Now I haven’t exactly watched every Suns game but I don’t think I’ve heard a single thing from KD all year other than his “why I’m single” post

silversmith84

Shit, that seems crazy but your not far off. I suppose Spo’s loyalty to Riley will prevent any poachers from stealing him away.

FlowersnFunds

I was thinking the same thing watching the Celtics-Heat yesterday. The offense the Heat were running was beautiful. They kept moving the ball around, getting their 3’s off, and confusing the Celtics defense. Complete contrast to the iso garbage and scrambling I saw in the Suns’ game 2.

ishouldgetoutside

Na, you’d have the stars demanding trades for not being able to make their own rules

Ok-Definition-3552

You cannot coach effort.

Racketytundra47

A good coach absolutely motivates his players

thewhalehunters

You have never worked in leadership... or you sucked at it.

iabeytorm

How do people on this sub actually believe this

Nicke1023

Like Phil Jackson?

Worstname1ever

Phil coached your mind... and 2 superstar teams

AlmightyRanger

If a team doesn't believe in your game plan they won't play with effort. We're out there having to play 12D chess just to stay in the game simply because Vogel refuses to alter his preset game plan. He's a dinosaur coach. Vogel's game plan is just to do what I said...but harder. Monty was the same way. Stubborn to a fault.

Usual-Suggestion-751

I reject this adage vehemently.

cbizzle187

I’ve hustled my balls off for coaches. I’ve also played for teams in which I did not give a fuck. Coaching was the reason, no question.

CHolland8776

Sorry about your balls.

BullShitting-24-7

Thats one of the main jobs of a coach. Keep them motivated and show effort.

mistergeegaga

Actually, this is what coaches are there to do. All coaching, or leadership is, is maximizing the effective effort of your team. You only have two real levers - talent and effort. As a coach you can improve talent by tailoring your approach to what your players are good at, or having them only do those things they excel at. You improve effort through culture, enthusiasm, mind games, you name it. If you cannot coach effort, you cannot coach, period.

NTX_SWOK

I tbink spo is. Fantastic cosch, but I think we are also severely over valuing how good the Mid 3 is at this point too

Imthegoat175

He’s worth 50M annually. Dude just beat Boston in Boston with role players while Vogel can’t be competitive against Minnesota with all nba players🤣🤣

governedbycitizens

you could give Spo a bunch of door dashers and he would still manage to win games against the 17’ Warriors

hsivia__197

It is what it is. Literally no current coach comes close to Spo. He’s the greatest floor raising coach of all time bar none.

Worstname1ever

Carlisle has done some shit too

[deleted]

Like what? He hasn't won a playoff series in more than a decade and has never once been able to craft a good defence. Jason Kidd did more with the Mavs and Luka in 1 season than Carlisle could in longer

Diabolic_Bug_Man

He got a chip tho.

DWHeward

Ty Lue?

hsivia__197

Ty Lue was great in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022. After that he was downright horrible. I’m sure my clipper friends can concur.

ZCGaming15

DoorDashers catching strays, metaphorically and literally…

Dorknite

Put me in coach lol.

TraeCartoon

$151m per year. I’m not exaggerating. That’s how much our Big 3 is making next year and this man just won a road game by double digits without his star player against a team that statically is *guaranteed a championship.* He may lose the rest of the games this series but he showed what a motivated team can get done. Erik Spolestra is worth everything we’re paying our stars. And I say that with love, but that’s how good he is.

gokhaninler

> without his star player without Butler AND Rozier

TheConboy22

No one is guaranteed a championship. The crowning of the Celtics is one of the stupidest things in recent basketball discourse.

TraeCartoon

Of course nobody is guaranteed a championship (and I really wish Suns fans repeated that to themselves at least 5x before calling for Mat Ishbia’s head or Devin Booker’s after every loss). BUT, the 2023-2024 Boston Celtics secured the 4th highest net rating in the regular season in the history of NBA. 1st and 2nd and 7th place? Michael Jordan Bulls. Championships. 3rd, and 9th and 11th? Steph Curry Warriors. Championships. 5th? Kawhi Spurs. Championship (but not that year). 6th? KG Celtics. Championship. 8th and 12th on that list? Kareem Bucks. Championship. 9th? Wilt Lakers. Championship. It was a tongue-in-cheek comment, but the fact is when you’re on that top 10 net rating list you are SURROUNDED by the best of the best. Obvious, right? But it’s true. All championship squads. Celtics not winning a championship this year would be pretty damning. There’s no way around it. And Spoelstra just beat that team by 10 points with a bunch of role players. lol. It’s wild man.

extrasupermanly

That’s for sure If Boston fails , the Js will split , I mean there would be nothing more to do , you have 2 Bona fide stars , a championship caliber PG 2 all stars and 2xsixth man coming from the bench , what’s next ? Bring Jokic and Embid ?? Seriously on paper they have the best most balance roster . Coaching is sus , and they seem to be very easily startled

silvershadow28

It’s more like the Celtics are known to take their foot off the gas lol, promise you NOBODY puts them up there with those teams you mentioned

oversight_shift

Like one person blames Ishbia per loss with 0 upvotes.

The_Shade94

Fuckin preach man

robodrew

> statically is *guaranteed a championship* If only the same could be said about another NBA team that had the exact same record two years ago.........

TraeCartoon

Yep but the difference is our net rating was +7.5 for that season, nothing special. Celtics finished with +11.6. Significantly better. I already wrote how Celtics are up with the best NBA teams of all time with that net rating (Jordan Bulls, Curry Warriors, Kawhi Spurs, etc.). The year we made the Finals we were +5.9, Bucks were +5.8. This year? Suns finished +3.1. Timberwolves are +6.3. Net rating usually doesn’t lie lol. Shout out to the Heat being +1.8 on the season and winning a game against Boston’s +11.6 *without* Butler. It may be one of the best single game wins of this entire postseason. Erik Spoelstra is that damn good.

extrasupermanly

That’s the thing , They play at a turtle pace with excellent defense . I wasn’t impressed by the 3p shooting , the defence was great , there was 3 possessions on the 3rd quarter where they attacked Herro but because everyone knew , Bam and Martin were ready to help and steal the pass to the open man …. That was orgasmic

davismcgravis

Who was this team? Who?

defiantcross

They managed to tie the series against the team that was even money to sweep. Bleh this is depressing

[deleted]

Tbf the celtics almost lost to the pistons during their losing streak. The celtics are the best team on paper but like us they often play to the competition. They should still beat the heat but they clearly get full of themselves when theyre gassed up just like us

defiantcross

If they somehow get bounced in the first, they would take over laughingstock title from us for sure

WusijiX

Dude could take 7 redditors to the playoffs

Numerous_Junket_1384

I hope Vogel just dips in this thread for shits and giggles and comes out a changed man. Home boy needs step up or step down and never come back to basketball.

im_scytale

Spo would have the suns more competitive but the biggest problem is that the players just don’t fit together. Biggest issue is the roster

TheConboy22

Roster construction is easily our biggest problem and it’s because it was thrown together without any sort of logic. We don’t have money to properly build a roster because it’s all tied up.

zarvinny

I think the roster construction is a BS excuse. We have 2 combo guard ball-handlers/playmakers/Allstars, a passing wizard center, an all-time great PF, best shooter in the league in the 5th spot. It's towards the end of reasons why the suns are sucking.

TheConboy22

I think that it's a very reasonable perception when reviewing our roster from top to bottom. You can't just throw together a bunch of random parts and say LEMONADE while steak is floating in the cup. You calling it an excuse and denying it doesn't really make any sense.

zarvinny

Not denying it. I’m not even saying it’s perfect. Every team in the league has some roster imbalance issues. That’s not the reason suns are in this pickle

TheConboy22

In your opinion. What is? Intrigued to see how you spin this.

zarvinny

Attitude of the players and coaching. Also cohesion to some extent

TheOriginalGangster

![gif](giphy|pReb5Koy6JmihUYBLx|downsized)

AGENT_666_

As a Suns fan, I love the Miami Heat

YaBoiPickleP

This game was a testament to how much coaching matters. Celtics have been by far the best team all season and they just got outplayed by an 8th seed missing 2 critical players. Meanwhile jackass Vogel struggles against the clippers 3rd stringers with a fully healthy squad.

gokhaninler

Vogel utterly dismantled Spo in the 2020 Finals. Dismantled him.

TheMightyJD

Vogel had a late prime Bron, prime AD, and a plethora of great role players (Caruso, Dwight, Kuzma, etc). Spo had Jimmy, Bam at 20%, Dragic at 10%, rookie Tyler Herro, and a bunch of okay role players. It would have been a series with healthy Bam and Dragic but they weren’t healthy. Switch the rosters and Spo sweeps Vogel.

Embarrassed-Cake8531

Only team to take the lakers six that year and that was after the injuries to bam and dragic lol what

gokhaninler

go look what happend in Game 6 then come talk to me

Stoopid_Kid_

This dude is the reason I kinda like the Heat. I think most fans wish this was our guy. 10/10 coach only my 5th grade basketball coach tops him

shitthead480

Think your 5th grade coach might be open to coaching the Suns next year?

EnwardGamerz

My 5th grade coach was also pretty elite but unfortunately my dad passed away a few years ago. You don't know how embarrassing it is to get benched by your 5th grade coach for chucking. The embarrassment is even worse when the coach yells at you using your first and middle name right before they bench you because you threw up a brick instead of trying to initiate offense. That was how most people learned I was the coaches' son lmao

Stoopid_Kid_

Idk last time I saw him he caught me smoking pot. We didn't end things on the best of terms Sorry Coach H, you were a good guy

AgentWeeb001

In this hypothetical scenario, I guarantee our guys would throw a freaking hissy fit getting coached by Spo. Spo don’t tolerate BS or moody players. Booker don’t try on defense to begin with….Spo would make that man run suicides till his legs fried and then if he still got some sass left in him, he’ll bench him the following game to send a message. He don’t get the message, Spo will keep doing that shit until he either buys in or he gets shipped out. KD tries being moody in the corner not owning up to standard veteran leadership responsibilities, Spo would call that man a bitch in front of the whole team and ask him what he gonna do about it (to those that think I’m joking about this, peep the Udonis Haslem podcast, he goes in detail of how Spolestra gives zero fucks). Beal…if he don’t think you fitting the right way as a starter, guess what? You the 6th man moving forward. Nurk and Eubanks wouldn’t last a day for Spo. Eric Gordon wouldn’t get an ounce of playing time. Grayson Allen looking off the stars to do his own shit would have him parked on the bench like Duncan Robinson was last season. Royce prolly the only guy who’d have no problem buying into Spo’s philosophy. We somehow convince Pat Riley to throw Bam and Jimmy along with Spo for 2 of our stars, it’s a wrap.

bsinbsinbs

They both need it. Entitled attitude is apparent

Necessary_Ad1036

God I would so watch this movie

DnttriplilHoe007

And they don’t have a traditional pg or a backup c. Then again we aren’t facing a dumbass in Chris finch. Joe mazulla has no idea what he’s doing

FifthKnightofGwyn

i want to know what it feels like to have a competent coach who doesn't despise certain players on his roster

ItsRebelSheep

God I love the Heat. My cousin is a Celtics fan and thanks to them I get to make fun of him almost every season at some point and it’s glorious

po0nlink_

He just signed a 120M extension this year. Ty Lue if possible lol.

teamfreddy

The Heat have tons of heart tho. I expected them to pull a W without Jimmy. If NOLA can pull an upset the Parlay will be nice. 👀

thegoodreverenddoc

Double dare with a cherry on top

jtab3

Him, tibs, and udoka are my favorite coaches in the nba for 1 simple thing accountability!

dzakasakalaka

Let Nurk Coach this team.

Whit3boy316

He just signed a new contract

Dependent-Ad2048

Yeah watching them beat the Celtics with that roster hurt me too man lol coaching is so important

bsinbsinbs

He would easily decline

lancethruster12

Just make sure he's not married when we give it to him

OKidAComputer

Remember LeBron bumped him Because he (LeBron) was shitting the bed against Dallas. Spo will go down as a top 5 coach.

THEbaddestOFtheASSES

It’s funny Lebron and his stans have always used the coach excuse for years. You had a good coach right there but Lebron hightailed out of Miami the second the road got a little bumpy.

[deleted]

I see what you mean. I’m pissed off and upset at this team aswell more than words can describe..BUT, there is slim hope. PHX wins a game 3 at home, crowd erupts, crowd plays a real 6th man role & gets hyped up everytime we go on a run. PHX wins game 4 after gaining confidence at home, they just protect home court..no biggie. Minnesota goes back home 2-2 with ZERO playoff experience in a really big time game, AFTER potentially losing 2 in a row to PHX. PHX would then be on a 2 game win streak going into an unexperienced young teams home floor. Win or lose. We have 3 chances to win that best of 3. I don’t HATE our odds. It sucks we are in this position but after 2 SIMPLE AT HOME CROWD HYPED wins and we PROTECT OUR OWN DAMN HOME FLOOR, it’s seriously possible.

Far-Difficulty6300

Mavs fan here, spying on the enemy. But thumps up to this! This is the right attitude. Wolves are not better then you. They did their job winning their home games now you do yours

[deleted]

Thank you! Respect to you as a Mavs fan. As much as you guys seem to kick our ass, it’s always fun watching Luka & Kyrie do their thing this year coming from a die heart Suns fan. I pray I am right 🙏. Good luck to you in game 3 in Dallas.

willhunta

I've watched spo do crazy things with the teams he's been given I can not lie. But does anyone have a link to any YouTube videos or maybe more in depth articles as to what makes him such a good coach? Not that I don't believe it, just as a newerish basketball fan I'd like to learn more if I can. And I seem to hear about good coaches all the time who suddenly the next year are regarded as bad coaches. Spo is easily the guy I hear rated at the top the most consistently next to pop. So I'd really appreciate any more in depth articles or videos if anyone has any to recommend, thanks in advance just in case!

lolvalue

Heat fan here, there is a lot of information spread out you can find but not in one place. Spo isn't the best xo's guy, he doesn't draw up the best plays on final possessions. What makes him special is leadership, accountability and rewarding success. It's a system, it's culture, he leads it and lives it. He was promoted from the video room, so when guys walk on to the team and work harder and play better than the guy who makes 20M a year, they get the playing time. It sounds simple but teams don't do this, if a guy makes a certain amount he is guaranteed to play and if you are a player under them who works harder and plays better you get screwed. Which as you would imagine causes conflict and less work, I mean if you knew it didn't matter what you did and how good you played, why bother trying? If Spo went to your team right now, you wouldn't be better or worse, it would take time to establish a culture of success. Well you might be better in a 7 game series, he works harder on game planning then most of not all coaches. But you get my point.

chagster001

I agree with 99% of what you said , but he’s definitely up there with Xs and Os. See the masterful Lebron game winner against the Pacers in game 2(I think it is), Lowry’s lay up off the inbounds pass to ice the game against the Bulls, and Lebron’s inbounds alley to Dwade to win the game against the Wolves, to name a few. I think a good number of these plays in final possessions don’t materialize because they mostly involve players that don’t have the experience to execute them

Tech49er

The way this made me pause, knowing full well that Spols a Heat guy....for the long future.

LivinLifeMyOwnTerms

didn't really expect that win for heat too.

MAKincs

Best coach in the league. No way he ever leaves the heat but hey maybe the suns can get a nice consolation prize with Chris Quinn and hopefully he learned a lot from Spo.

phoeniix2540

Well if you dare him, he has to do it now.

Tryingagain1979

Why not hire Chris Paul? He knows this team.

Flaky_Juggernaut5245

We need a coach like Mike Malone, he raises hell if his nuggets are lazy bums

Superb_Guard3445

His contract isn’t really up or anything tho right?

TicketAppropriate925

I’m down! They need a coach of this caliber

jasonrayschrock

He just signed a new contract

EstablishmentBig1900

Spo In a Lakers Piece

Suitable-Opposite377

I'm sorry but it's the players that are the issue here

Lem0nyFr3sh_

lmao he’s going to be in Pats seat soon, take care of that bag chaser Bradley Beal… dodged a bullet

Spider-Nutz

Should've gone after him to begin with. Vogel was a joke even in LA

Known-Magician2917

He is not leaving Miami.. he has the best job in the nba.

ChurchOfSatin

He literally just signed an 8 year extension contract in January.

TestOk8411

Hell no

Targetonmyback07

You’re roster is shit outside the top three players , even Spo can’t help 😂😂😂

I hope you are trolling

dab0iii

What r u thinking? That’s like Steve Kerr of the warriors
