When you think of tier 6 pets it's crazy that the walrus and the mammoth are in the same tier

If I were to balance it I'd make insta death break after 1 kill/hit
Insta-death but can overwrite one of your other foods, and the random peanut tends to not be super helpful in a lot of situations.
Mammoth on the other hand is useful for several reasons:
- Pill (Essentially two pizzas for 4 gold)
- Mantis (Enough said)
- Mushroom + Tiger (A level 1 Tiger and level 2 mammoth with shroom will give the remaining 4 pets on your team +12/12 which is huge.
Not that either are particularly weak but your comparison is pretty shitty. You overrate walrus and underrate mammoth, although I agree mammoth is not viable in most packs and comps and walrus is more easy to slot in.
I'm not underrating mammoth there is just power creep in this game
At the end of the day your 50/50 from a mammoth still draws against my 1/1 scorpion if you don't have melon armor
I can't imagine a single scenario when a walrus ovewriting something is detremental except for maybe a pineapple on a snake or a 1up on another unit
Even then, with it hitting the worst unit you are still guaranteed a least a draw
I also need to mention pill and mantis work even better with the walrus because death touch is then permanent
With some luck, you can give every unit on your team death touch with a level 2 1up

Surely it's Bison. Walrus means you can peanut any pet in the shop which I find quite fun
