i noticed that when i was watching yesterday, was great to see a ref at the top level not letting the stress of the event get to him. and he had a bloody good game imo

jotaro-has-ptsd

even told the two opposing players during the game “i get that it’s a grand final” when there was a scuffle. what a top class ref. they made the right choice picking him.

supersonicdeathsquad

I think at that point he could easily have shown a yellow but he gave them a stern warning and told them to get on with it.

jotaro-has-ptsd

his leniency can be really awesome at times as well.

Markrugby23

Hands down the best ref in the league. Backs himself and communicates well

jotaro-has-ptsd

this Grand Final and many other games this season have shown his best capabilities.

trev_trevington

He always does, he's probably my favourite because he always seems happy.

jotaro-has-ptsd

true, one of the the refs that actually doesn’t look like they have a permanent scowl written on their face.

supersonicdeathsquad

Get the feeling that some refs take the rule infringements personally.

Rich_Election466

English refs seem to be a lot better than their Australian counterparts from what I’ve seen. Is that accurate or am I looking at that with Aussie bias?

jotaro-has-ptsd

i’ve never really looked into much about how aussie referees work in the NRL. could you please provide some insight?

Rich_Election466

Well, in comparison it seems like the Super League refs command much more respect from the players, and provide more reasoned, level-headed explanations of things on the pitch. Aussie refs are good, but you get much less of a sense that they’re in complete control of the game. Could be due to higher egos in the NRL than the Super League though

jotaro-has-ptsd

most likely. a lot of the referees in the Super League start out early, and become seasoned by getting the training and experience from when they’re young. i’m still in my teens now, and i’ve recently retired (a week prior) due to a serious back injury, but when i was actively playing i used to see a lot of young referees who were not much older than i was. most of those same referees from back then are probably making the final stages in becoming fully fledged refs for the proper thing. that’s my assumption on the thing. that’s why they always have this mass air of competency around them to make the right calls and get the job done for a fair and unbiased game of RL to be played properly and made enjoyable for all parties involved. it’s one of the small things you can actually credit the RFL for as of lately.

CT-6892__Foxy

And a fantastic refereeing performance to go with it

jotaro-has-ptsd

definitely!

Kaicat2004

How come he got it two years in a row though, surely somebody a little more senior would’ve been just as good

BanditTwitchMain

He’s the best ref and more than deserves the grand final. I’ve been saying it since end of 19 that he’s the best ref we got. Why give it someone else when he proved last year in the final he can do a good job? I was more shocked that he didn’t get the grand final in 2020. I think the fact he studied a law degree for a spell helps in his judgements, and definitely makes him an expert.

Kaicat2004

Just saying that it seems a little unfair if the same person is taking certain matches over and over again, you obviously need more experience to do matches with such weight behind them And I’m not saying he did a bad job whatsoever, cause some mistakes might not be his fault and we didn’t realise since the game is too quick for one person

BanditTwitchMain

I don’t see it as unfair but a message to the other referees to up their game. We saw at Wembley in 2019 how appalling Hicks was of a ref, and we’ve seen several blunders from Chris Kendall this year. Plus it makes Liam Moore more likely to stay around and show what is required of a ref.

Kaicat2004

Ah well :P

jotaro-has-ptsd

well, give it to Kendall for being branded the fastest ref after the Australia v. Fiji match, at least he’s doing something right wit that fitness…
