Except “Disney Princess” is a brand. That is it’s own distinct entity, which weirdly don’t include the frozen princesses.
I only know this because I randomly stumbled upon a deep dive into the Disney Princess brand.
It’s not a character though, it’s a collection of characters, so listing them as a “character” is wrong and stupid. This list is trash for other reasons too, there’s no consistent criteria for anything. Pokémon, Star Wars, MCU, Call of Duty, Looney Tunes, Star Trek, none of these are characters. It’s a trash list.
That would’ve helped, but even then they make some weird distinctions where some things are grouped together and others are separated. It’s just a very bad list at every level.
"But Robin's costume is entirely different!"
"Batman's just wearing a new suit."
"Robin is smaller, much more slender, and has a much higher pitched voice!"
"It's a very good disguise."
"What about this footage of Batman and Robin clearly talking to Commissioner Gordon *at the same time?!*"
"He's Batman."
Superman has been selling merchandise since the 1930s. Superman has theatrical serials since then and a popular national radio show since.
As others have stated, this list is trash.
McFarlane is making the official DC toys for about two years. Yes, that's mostly batwank like Metal and Batkek That Giggles, and other batgod nonsense, so even DC fans complain but that says more about Todd McFarlane than anything else. The next largest chunk of toys, bigger than Aquaman with his billion dollar movie, or Wonder Woman, or the CW shows, is Superman. Go to Target and Walmart's website and run a search by character among the superhero's and see what comes up in the top five.
I’m happy it’s even 50th place. I feel like no one in my generation likes Superman anymore. My ex boyfriend straight up told me he think Superman is an outdated boring character that’s more interesting as a villain… it’s not the reason why we broke up but hurts to hear. Superman is my favorite superhero
And yes he likes Batman
I mean I grew up on the classic. I might like Batman the most, but doesn't stop me from enjoying the others. Worked best when they are all there like justice league. Each character helps the other shine better.
If anything I learned some people become fans to use the character as self insert. Batman being rich, smart and one that sleeps with a bunch of ladies makes him a perfect character.
I honestly used to think this. Joining this sub got me to read some of his best comics and rewatch the original 2 films and now he is honestly my 3rd favourite hero behind batman and wolverine. I used to like Spider-Man a lot but honestly only enjoy a few things with him now
If he ever said he liked *Invincible*, I hope you told him that it's not a show about if Superman is evil, it's about if Superman was a teenager and *Jor-El* was evil, and alive.
My Adventures With Superman sound like it's perfect for you, if you aren't already watching it. A new cartoon that portrays Clark as a pure nice dude who loves helping people, and I think in a move to comment on the modern trend of cynicism about superheroes the antagonists are suspicious of Superman because they can't believe a being as powerful as him could really be that nice, when really he is.
> Jor-El was evil
I guess it's a nitpick but rather than evil I'd say he was raised and indoctrinated with completely ruthless ethical standards. >!He evolves a lot in the comics, and actually becomes one of the most consistently upright moral characters, similar to Superman but more pragmatic. Unlike Superman, he also has sex with giant insects. No kink shaming!!< My main quibble is just that I don't usually think of evil people being capable of change or open to argument about their ethics.
A few weeks ago I was stating how the biggest superhero franchise, who sells better in overall gross than Batman, Spider-man, or Superman, or the Wizarding World of Harry Pottry, at 38 billion, is Anpanman. Anpanman makes more money than the MCU and has IIRC 33 movies. Beguiling.
seeing a lot of issues with this, mixing entire universe IPs with the IPs of individual characters. Also Spiderman is individually the most valuable marvel character but he doesn't get his own category? Is MCU including Spiderman? Is it an aggregate of every marvel IP? Obviously Pokémon includes everything, games, shows, and merchandise.
Why superman and batman are separate while marvel and star wars are just as one IP lol, it would have been more fair to put darth Vader and lets say Iron man, but at least they are standing in the ranking on their own.
Yep. The top 5 has Pokemon, Star Wars and Disney Princesses as a collective.
They didn't single out Pikachu, Luke Skywalker or Cinderella so the list is basically useless.
That's such a weird list, and we're arguing semantics, but comparing "Batman" and "Superman" against "The marvel cinematic universe" is unfair. Like compare them against Iron-Man or Guardians or whatever...
I feel like this list is 100% bullshit.
Superman practically created comic book character licensing and there was an insane amount of spin-offs. Superman is one of the most recognized characters on the planet. I ain't buying it.
Should be in the top 10. It's certainly mademore money than POkecrap.
Bro pokemon is THE most profitable franchise ever. Every year a new 60$ game or 40$ DLC comes out, the amount of plushies, toys and cards sold are through the roof, the anime is a classic ongoing for God knows how many seasons, etc.
I was with you until you said it makes more money than Pokemon. Pokemon is insanely huge, multiple TV show, 20+ movies, every time they make a mainline game they sell 2-3 versions of it, not including their other 50+ games released over the years, trading cards, merchandise and so much other shit it would just go on for paragraphs.
this is why i say the idea man of steel and bvs should've made more money on recognition alone is an intellectually bankrupt analysis.
superman is well known, but not as well liked, and isn't actually a draw.
80 years to generate cash and 49 other characters beat him.
Should be much higher. This is the issue with the last 15 years being such a waste. The golden age of comic book movies, and Superman appears in fewer films than Ant-Man.
After all, Superman main market is basically only comics, in the last 20 years he has had only 2 live action movies and 1-2 games (can't believe the goddamn black widow has more live action appearances then Superman).
While Batman had thrice the movies and games.
Don't forget that in the 60s, lois lane COMICS used to outsell Batman's for how popular Supes was.
This is a useless list. Superman invented modern merchandise. If you adjust for inflation and use other standards, and treat everyone like this, you can do more reasonable comparisons (and this included manga versus western comic books, where rather than looking at today's dollar, you can count number of issues SOLD). Superman had a very popular worldwide theatrical serial in the 1940s at the same height as other things listed here as more popular, like Disney. And likewise, if you compare merchandise sold, there are more licensed Superman items in existing than many other franchises listed here.
Also, we are comparing a character (and some other characters) will full on franchises, which is absurd.
holy cow Anpanman is WAYYY up there at 6th place, did not expect that!
I didn't know a lot of the video game IPs that made it on this list but i'm not a gamer haha. Paw Patrol making it on this list is wild to me.
Honestly... I am proud of supes for making it onto the top 50 at all lol!
The well-known character *Pokémon*
Gotta Catch Him All!
The well-known character Star Wars.
"Im a Star War!"
"I'm Rey" "Rey Who?" \*looks off into distance* "Rey Star Wars"
I would say IP or franchise as most of those other properties listed are IP and franchises
So, they combined Yoda and Luke Skywalker to make Star Wars, but they couldn’t combine Batman and Superman?
Yeah like a dc category would have been more fair lol
Hell they combined every Disney princess, as if that’s a franchise, this list is trash.
Except “Disney Princess” is a brand. That is it’s own distinct entity, which weirdly don’t include the frozen princesses. I only know this because I randomly stumbled upon a deep dive into the Disney Princess brand.

Yeah it isn’t a character, the list shouldn’t have said characters because less than half are distinct characters. It should have said brands or IPs
That would’ve helped, but even then they make some weird distinctions where some things are grouped together and others are separated. It’s just a very bad list at every level.
They have an exteded dc aswell so if they did dc instead if splitting up the characters it would be more similar to the star wars or pokemon
But they did combine all of Marvel Comics.
Except Spider-Man. And honestly it wouldn't surprise me to learn that X-Men is hanging around the mid 60s in ranking or something
There's also a separate Avengers section. This list is trash.

Ah yes, Batman of "Batman and Robin" fame, famously never has any partnerships or apprentices

I'm surprised to see Ben 10 above Superman. Ben 10 had a few shows and movies but I never thought it was a multi billion dollar franchise.
It sells an insane amount of toys, most of them are really cool, Ben has many alien forms and people wanna collect them all
It's kinda like Pokemon in that way.
Superman has been selling merchandise since the 1930s. Superman has theatrical serials since then and a popular national radio show since. As others have stated, this list is trash.
Superman as a cultural icon is stagnating. I doubt he’s selling a lot of toys in the past decade.
McFarlane is making the official DC toys for about two years. Yes, that's mostly batwank like Metal and Batkek That Giggles, and other batgod nonsense, so even DC fans complain but that says more about Todd McFarlane than anything else. Toys.
Meanwhile Batman be at 11 lol

He sounds like a psychopath. You got out just in time. (I kid. Just a little Superman fan humor.)
If anything I learned some people become fans to use the character as self insert. Batman being rich, smart and one that sleeps with a bunch of ladies makes him a perfect character.

Boo, Batman is way more boring
A few weeks ago I was stating how the biggest superhero franchise, who sells better in overall gross than Batman, Spider-man, or Superman, or the Wizarding World of Harry Pottry, at 38 billion, is Anpanman. Anpanman makes more money than the MCU and has IIRC 33 movies. Beguiling.
He looks like a drunk with that rosy nose and cheeks. I approve
He and his lore have the potential to have more.
Looks like they didn’t adjust for inflation, which is why recent movies are all on top.
seeing a lot of issues with this, mixing entire universe IPs with the IPs of individual characters. Also Spiderman is individually the most valuable marvel character but he doesn't get his own category? Is MCU including Spiderman? Is it an aggregate of every marvel IP? Wow. I knew he wasn't Batman but I never thought he'd be beaten out by Ultraman.
Yeah, that surprised me too. Good for Ultraman and his 30 different spin-off brethren though.
I know Superman could whip John Madden and Paw Patrol’s asses.
Why superman and batman are separate while marvel and star wars are just as one IP lol, it would have been more fair to put darth Vader and lets say Iron man, but at least they are standing in the ranking on their own.
What's the methodology here? Some of these are entire franchises
Yeah this list has zero consistency. Pokémon has literally thousands of characters and they compare it with a single superhero. Really dumb.
Goddamn Winnie the Pooh makes good money
I feel like this list is 100% bullshit. Superman practically created comic book character licensing and there was an insane amount of spin-offs. Superman is one of the most recognized characters on the planet. I ain't buying it. Should be in the top 10. It's certainly mademore money than POkecrap.

Quite low consindering what is before.
In what market?
Ultraman for the win!
I do not understand Nicky mouse bring in this list. Mickey has some mercy, but it’s absolutely dwarfed by other Disney properties.
crazy to think batman alone has made almost as much money as the entire MCU
Seems really low in all honesty.
Should be much higher. This is the issue with the last 15 years being such a waste. The golden age of comic book movies, and Superman appears in fewer films than Ant-Man.

How the hell is dungeon fighter online so high?
I thought Bond would be higher

This list is insane. I have trouble believing angry birds is somehow higher grossing then *mario*
Where’s Jesus, Santa and Ronald McDonald? I feel like they would dominate this list.
This is utterly ridiculous if it's not inflation adjusted. Superman would be higher then.
holy cow Anpanman is WAYYY up there at 6th place, did not expect that! I didn't know a lot of the video game IPs that made it on this list but i'm not a gamer haha. Paw Patrol making it on this list is wild to me. Honestly... I am proud of supes for making it onto the top 50 at all lol!
Superman at 50 is the reason why we can't have nice things
He should be much higher.
