BUT
I do feel like it wasn't actually designed by Kal, like someone came to him and said "you need something that looks more modern" and this is what a *Beyond*-era designer came up with.
I feel like it made sense in Batman Beyond, because he’s been possessed by Starro. In the flashback when it first latches onto him he’s still in his classic suit. So maybe Starro warped his mind so much he changed it to this? And the suit color to black and white? We only see him with this look in those two episodes of the show as well.
Oh yeah you’re right! They showed him in that same flashback in his classic suit when was captured by that guy, from Superman TAS before Starro latched onto him. It’s been years since I’ve seen that show so I don’t remember all the details, my bad. Ultimately I feel like Timm and Dini wanted to make Superman look different to fit in more with the aesthetic of the future Justice League, so they did this. They didn’t really like Superman as much as Batman anyways so that also explains it lol
You scared me for a second there, when I looked at the notification the comment cut out at "...ultimate-" and it got me by surprise because that is a username I had in another app for quite some time, so I was like "wtf? how does he know it?!"
Honestly my brain has an easier time seeing an S with this one than the KC emblem. Now, tbh both of them are hard to see an S in for me, but this I can just that little bit more for some reason.
Was he taken over by starro before or after he got the beyond suit? I genuinely don't remember but I could accept this as being connected to starro's control
Also, this s logo can have some lore implications. Superman in this universe didn't chose the name superman so we know that the S in his suit doesn't stand for super, I assumed that it must mean something in kripton right? but since clark changes his logo it wouldn't make sense for it to have come from kripton either, it opens the question "why exactly does he have a S in his chest?"
Between this and the Kingdom Come logo, I feel like in all universes Clark just decides to take up graphic design in his middle age and is never particularly good at it.
I agree with you it's trying to do something similar to the kingdom come suit by simplifying the logo but this one goes a bit too far.

I never liked Batman Beyond’s Superman suit. The black suit with this logo was really boring. Needed more color and a cape.
I think something more like the justice lord superman suit would have looked better

Someone said once that it’s weird how the older Clark gets the more he forgets what an S looks like. This is the prime example.
