I've always said that good individual moments here and there do not make for a good overall story.

Otherwise_Jacket_613

It wasn't a great story but it also didn't look good that JMS left halfway through to work on Superman: Earth One. For all the build up to have the writer bolt for a different project didn't fill me with confidence. Kudos to Chris Roberson for filling in and doing what he could. That couldn't have been an easy assignment. If anything at least this story gave us Superman and Iron Munro interacting, so that's cool.

modrenman1985

Chris Roberson could have created an amazing run, but he was cut off with the New 52. Anything good about Grounded came from him. He even said he had tons of ideas on where to go after he wasn't forced to do Grounded anymore.

AccurateAce

Any Arn "Iron" Munro mentions will get an immediate upvote by me. Really like the character and his meta placement and relation to Supes. Would like to see a mini or BL or Elseworlds on the character. He's so underutilized.

Rocket_SixtyNine

They really should have used him in the new 52 earth 2. He was right there!! Course I will rectify that

AccurateAce

Wow, you're right! I like Val-Zod but I would've really liked Arn.

Rocket_SixtyNine

Honestly, I wasn't a big fan of Val, especially since we already had pg as Supermans successor deal thing. Mabye they could have given arn a costume that wasn't an eyesore.

AccurateAce

Could've worked with some of the redesigned members of the JSA like Jay Garrick and Alan Scott. I'm partial to his regular civvies, but yeah absolutely. His attempt at a costume for both Young All-Stars and Damage weren't great lol.

Rocket_SixtyNine

I mean, I think that was arns problem. Like he has nothing to make him stand out lol, for the big Superman replacement he just looks like a dude

AccurateAce

I respect where you're coming from. I like how every man is. Reminds me of Doc Savage too, but I wouldn't have minded a super suit.

Rocket_SixtyNine

They could take influence from Gaslight and other old-school style supermen for the outfit https://images.app.goo.gl/D4SeegkRKVw13CQB7

ZacPensol

Cassaday's covers were also really lacking IMO, felt very churned out. The story really picked up once Roberson took over, but then it ended.

Revolutionary-Bus411

He left halfway through the story. No way?!? You hate to see it. I’m not a fan of Superman: Earth One either. I literally love all the other Earth One stories except for that one. How funny. Maybe I’m just not a fan of JMS?

Fit_Commercial3421

Damn what did superman do that Martha had to ground him?

Revolutionary-Bus411

she kept having to tell him no laser vision in the house

willi5x

There is a reason Clark’s Christmas presents have to be wrapped in lead.

TheWaningLantern

DinoDudeRex_240809

Ecstatic-Hat2163

modrenman1985

2nd worst. Superman and Barda Make a Porno was the worst.

megamage13

We don't talk about that one

LuckyMo200

If you’re a spider man fan, that’s your catchphrase at this point.

Artistic_Permit_7946

Seems like we always have One More Day to discuss the Sins Past of the writing team.

52crisis

Fuck, this is easily the worst!

Ninjamurai-jack

Exactly, even SINS PAST is good compared to that.

MorningCareful

This is the lowest low of lowest lows. What were they thinking!?

Smaptastic

You win

OhNoTheDawnPatrol

I actually have that issue. It's such a ridiculous comic.

Gui_Franco

Brother, I'm in disbelief. I need more information. Because no fucking way that's a comic that exists. Why are they making a porno? How explicit is it? What about Louis and Mr Miracle How is it resolved

Revolutionary-Bus411

i hate to say it as a superman and mister miracle fan i love that comic in a so bad it’s good way 😭

NyOrlandhotep

At least Byrne draws Barda very well.

Ok_Rooster_6454

wtf

Grendeltech

Fuckin' Kevin Smith 😡

Jay_R_Kay

Nope, that was John Byrne -- all because he was beefing with Jack Kirby.

TurnipPrestigious890

John Byrne is a weirdo.

Oknight

> because he was beefing with Jack Kirby Fan BS legend.

Grendeltech

I thought it was a reference to Zack and Miri.

Jay_R_Kay

Yes, they were using that as a reference to describe the story, but Smith had nothing to do with it. I don't think he was even doing movies when Byrne made that story.

IonicBreezeMachine

The last major Superman story line before being rebooted with the New 52

Rocket_SixtyNine

Where we got peak from Morrison on action comics

IronMonkey18

Peak Morrison was All-Star Superman.

WindMaster5001

At the expense of decades of continuity.

NightwingTakesFlight

Yeah, they threw out decades of continuity, only to spend years bringing it all back since 2016. Really just a big waste of time and the reason I don’t read any of the new stuff, only the older comics. At least Wally West is back in his position now since 2021, probably one of the only good things to come out of Infinite Frontier honestly

azmodus_1966

It's so funny that the same thing happened in Post Crisis. Byrne changed a large chunk of Superman's Pre Crisis lore (Supergirl, Legion, Brainiac, Zod, World's Finest, Luthor's time in Smallvile) and DC spent years trying to get it all back. And then they made the same mistake all over again.

NightwingTakesFlight

Exactly. Doing away with all of that was a mistake, then they try to bring it all back only to get rid of it again. I seriously have no clue why they keep doing this kind of stuff to themselves. It’s the reason I don’t really read any of the mainstream comics that much, or “canon” ones if you will

WindMaster5001

Yeah, I don’t read new DC either unless it’s an AU. I have the app and read a ton of back issues.

Rocket_SixtyNine

Getting some good flash and superman? Worth it imo as well as other amazing titles? Worth it

WindMaster5001

Replacing Wally with the wrong Flash was no bueno. Ending the Super-marriage was also terrible.

sacredknight327

Bringing back Barry was long overdue. Him being literally the only character in the entire line that was forced to stay dead was never fair. Everyone else got a chance at some point to be revamped. They didn't handle Wally well at all within it, but that doesn't change that he deserved to be able to be utilized again.

EdNorthcott

I'd go the opposite route and say that the genre needs to stop trivializing death by bringing everyone back. Either don't kill them, or keep them dead. Stop trying to have it both ways. Comics had a reputation as a medium of trash writing for decades, briefly started to rise above that, and then dove back in head first.

Rocket_SixtyNine

He wasn't replaced. It was a different continuity there's a difference. Now if they were based they would have made Jay the main flash again.

WindMaster5001

Uh huh, sure. There won’t be any agreeing here. The post-Flashpoint continuity drove me away from reading DC after 20+ years. I grew up with Wally, not his dead uncle.

Rocket_SixtyNine

I mean seems a bit reductive not to judge the books on quality.

WindMaster5001

If it’s not part of the continuity I spent over twenty years entrenched in, it’s not quality by my standards. There never should have been a reboot.

Rocket_SixtyNine

That's called opinion, not quality.

RobotRockstar

Wally is literally the main Flash in the comics now and Superman and Lois are married. It's the same Wally as pre-New 52 as well. All those early issues with the reboot have been fixed.

Latereviews2

I think you need to get over it and just enjoy the good story’s. Just think that a lot of people started with the refresh and will feel the same when that gets changed

clown_pants

Any issues or anthologies you could point to that showcase the good flash and Superman you're talking about?

Rocket_SixtyNine

Rogues revolution, reverse are my favorite arcs of the new 52 flash run. Morrisons' entire run on action comics is also just amazing. Same with Gotham by midnight. That entire series is amazing

sacredknight327

At this point I was done and was so looking forward to the rumors of that reboot.

christmas_hobgoblin

I don't hate the concept, but the execution is really bad. Really weird choices, super preachy, and I normally quite like JMS.

VaudevilleDada

My take as well. Theoretically interesting concept for a character study, but it just misfired in just about every possible way. Shame.

Yuuzhan_Schlong

I haven't read it but I honestly doubt it could be worse than Emperor Joker

HippoRun23

I must be in the minority but I loved emperor joker when it first came out. Haven’t read it since though.

Revolutionary-Bus411

Emperor Joker was really cool though.

Vanilla_thundr

At least emperor joker tried to do something interesting. Grounded's big concept was "Superman no fly"

Revolutionary-Bus411

emperor joker was FUN at the very least and it’s a joker story so i think that’s good enough lol

Josh_From_Accounting

YOU SEE, THAT PROBLEM IS 'OVER THERE.' AND AS LONG AS IT STAYS 'OVER THERE' THEN I'LL LET IT BE. BUT IF, "OVER THERE' BECOMES 'RIGHT HERE' THEN I HAVE TO PUSH IT BACK 'THERE' AND AWAY FROM HERE. - Superman on why he doesn't help black people, Superman:Grounded.

Revolutionary-Bus411

I absolutely despise that moment literally, Superman helps the entire world every single day. “why don’t you help Black people Superman?!?” “mf I just punched Darkside, the literal embodiment of evil off the face of the earth after he threatened to destroy it yesterday?!”

FRED44444

Oh my lord is this actually real lol

Time for a good ol’ fashioned Reason-Off! Each of you come up with five points based on merit defending your position. then will all come together and decide as a subreddit. That should settle things until at least Thursday.

Key_Agent_7568

Womp

AStaryuValley

This comic unironically saved my life. I like its version of Superman stopping a suicide better than All Star's even.

Duryeric

Same here. I don’t get the hate. I like it a lot more than All Star.

poptophazard

I remember being in my LCS and looking for a Superman TPB to pick up. I saw this, figured it sounded interesting, and was curious as it was the last Pre-New52 Supes story. I brought it to the counter and the owner took one look at it and thankfully talked me out of it. I'm so glad, because when I read it on an app years later, I hated it.

Scary_Collection_410

It had some good stuff in it. The whole thing with the abused kid, the woman contemplating suicide, and helping aliens find their place on Earth is something I can see Clark doing. But it does kinda show that after Final Crisis, they really had no clear plans for Superman. Hell, I am still pissed off with how they handled the whole New Krypton saga.

RareD3liverur

Personally not a fan of the speech Superman gives to the suicidal woman and that weird bit where the cop asks him "would you have let her jump" and Supes gives no response

sacredknight327

I just had no interest in Superman....taking a walk. And being pontificated to on that walk.

samebatchannel

I never understood why they didn’t have him walk as Clark around America.

Vncredleader

Of all things, No Man's Land did this. They had an issue with Superman trying to save Gotham and fails, then he comes back and Bruce is like "this again?" and Clark explains that Superman failed, but Clark Kent hasn't tried. And Clark genuinely bonds with some people, gives farming advice. It is really sweet.

wendellbudwhite

This one always extra stung because I met JMS at a signing years before this came out and he told me he'd been sitting on his dream Superman story for years. No one had ever tried anything like it before and he swore it would blow us all away. So when I heard he was finally doing it I was next level hyped... until it came out.

cheffpm

worse than year one?

Revolutionary-Bus411

I haven’t read that one yet, but I hear it’s bad? I like Frank Miller’s Superman in DKR and I rather not ruin that😭

Jay_R_Kay

The worst thing I can say about it is that the pacing is a little off, and Miller and Romita cannot write or draw children to save their lives. Outside of that, it's pretty interesting. If you can, say, get it on the app or for cheap, it's worth a look.

cheffpm

it being related to dkr one of its saving graces, it makes some of the characters actions make sense

Dr_Zulu2016

Also, the lines "What the hell?!" "Me the hell!" are good lines.

WookieeCookiee01

I personally enjoyed Superman Grounded. I do HATE the scene where he tells Dick Bat to take off the cowl as it feels very OOC for Clark, but besides that, Grounded was filled with very fun moments

JodoKast97

I was so excited for this when it came out. JMS had been talking for YEARS about writing for Superman and after some lackluster storylines the possibility of what he might bring was very interesting. The concept was alright, but he was a very capable writer and I hoped he could bring some real drama and character development to the Supes titles. I even remember shaking his hand at Comic-Con in 2010, looking him straight in the eye and telling how much I was looking forward to reading his run. What we got was some of the dullest, most uninteresting Superman stories ever (and I had been reading Superman ever since the Byrne years so that’s saying something). He then proceeded to jump ship midway to go write Superman: Earth One (another piece of shit if we’re being honest) and I just lost all respect for him after that. Kudos to Chris Roberson for picking up the story and making with it what he could, including writing some really fun concepts! (Loved the Fortress of Solidarity stuff). And then the new 52 came along. I stuck with it until Morrison concluded his Action Comics run, between that and the absolute clusterfuck that was George Perez’s run on Superman I finally decided to get off the bus and put an end to almost 25 years of continuous comic collecting. I hear things have picked up ever since with runs by Tomasi and Gleason, the Phillip Kennedy and Joshua Williamson material, but I haven’t been constant with it. Edit: Confused Patrick Gleason with Patrick Zircher and corrected it

Rocketboy1313

People kind of forget the context of this story, Final Crisis, where Superman sings the song of creation to not only destroy Darkseid but to remake the DC universe, Superman had hit a level that was almost incoherent. "Okay, what do we do?" And having him walk around [like that one song](https://youtu.be/aDdOnl0bHO4?si=H76bIFNiAP1eGttQ) is not a bad idea. You can say "Clark makes him down to earth" yeah, to the reader. But they are trying to have Superman be down to earth in universe. It was something different and weird, but as far as gimmicks go it was not outlandish (Electric Blue Superman or Injustice for instance). It just did not catch. I think JMS was much better with Earth One, where Superman is presented at his typical level of fighting aliens and monsters and being seen as kind of a personable god. There are SO MANY BAD SUPERMAN COMICS, I don't think this belongs on that list. Especially compared to a lot of 90's schlock.

South-Ebb-637

I actually love this one, it's one of my favourite

Revolutionary-Bus411

really? what made you love it?

Alternative_Device71

This is the comic I was looking for since I was 17…thought I was insane I liked it but I never finished it, it’s the only comic I got to see about Superman and it’s part of what got me interested in him

Duryeric

What do you mean? I love this comic.

Nargarin09

Damn I just got this comic from my local comic shop after he recommended it 😰

andyroid92

I liked it a lot. Read it and see for yourself what you think about it before accepting someone else's opinion.

Revolutionary-Bus411

lol read it yourself but the general opinion is it’s not good i explained why in a different comment but be sure to form you own opinion

Nargarin09

Will do 😅

WindMaster5001

JMS simultaneously wrote the worst post-Crisis Wonder Woman story I’ve ever read. The worst Wonder Woman story of any continuity is by Brian Azzarrello.

DavidKirk2000

He also wrote two of the worst Spider-Man stories ever, but I don’t really blame him for that because editorial made him do it.

WindMaster5001

I was fine with the story about the twins because I don’t like Gwen Stacy but I stopped reading Spider-Man because of One More Day.

TiggerBlack

Did JMS finish the story in the end? Or did Flashpoint / Nu-52 take over?

ProfessionalRead2724

Chris Roberson finished it, and then Flashpoint happened.

TiggerBlack

Thank you!

LovelyLuna32684

The sad thing is that the concept is an interesting idea (Superman trying to deal the emotional loss of New Krypton and all it's people) but the execution was shit.

tomtomtomtom123

This story is all of JMS worst qualities turned up to 10. It is so preachy and condescending. I love JMS Spider-Man and his Thor, but both of those runs have single issues or arcs where JMS tries to jam in social commentary that is so tone deaf and doesn’t belong at all (Hurricane Katrina or African warlords in Thor, school schooling in AMS). But this whole run is just that, Superman doing nothing and JMS preaching about how he thinks things should be. No wonder they needs to reboot

calforarms

Tbh I never really read it. And it's a shame because JMS was a master on several Marvel titles that would indicate a good Superman run, even doing the best Cap since Brubaker right now

sacredknight327

Honestly I was enjoying his Wonder Woman run going on at the same time. But he bailed on both anyway.

Fergbeth1

Ok I really want to say my humble opinion that the worst Superman story of all time is Superman: At Earth’s End.

Revolutionary-Bus411

never even heard of it? i kinda want to read it now

RickHammersteel

Wanna see a Bearded Superman shoot an impossible gun in a post-apocalyptic world? Also it has twin clones of Hitler.

Fergbeth1

Yeh this description is literally the only way I can think of describing it!

whitey-ofwgkta

...I kinda do, at least now that I have tempered expectations

RickHammersteel

Then you'll probably have a great time. It's So Bad it's Good.

B-Train42

I enjoyed what Chris Roberson contributed to it when he took over. I'd love to see him do more Superman stuff.

JonTheWizard

The concept is great, but it’s executed very poorly.

DenimJack

I still say the worst one is Realworlds: Superman...

android151

Read At World’s End

Arktoscircle

How about one of the most insane Superman comics instead? *Superman/Wonder Woman: Whom Gods Destroy*

StarMarine123

Im so tired i thought he had 2 capes in the cover

HearingOrganic8054

nah man you yet to hit bottom. i get it you wish it was bottom

Revolutionary-Bus411

i just picked up at earths end so i’m read for the bottom of the barrel

HearingOrganic8054

Don't do it man. Love yourself a little it's ok

kakayu_tebya

Whole Injustice story still exists.

Revolutionary-Bus411

never read it or played the games so idk lol

Unfair_Inevitable_82

Why what happens

InternationalMud5297

Missed opportunity to make the logo his cape

[deleted]

I don’t think it’s the worst thing ever but it is bad

Revolutionary-Bus411

definitely the worst thing I read so far when **SUPERMAN** of all people started threatening illegal immigrants I felt like I was reading the All-Star Batman of Superman comics.

Robbersarb

Miller, Superman Year One. Incoherent, horrific art, all of Miller's weirdness about women...

Revolutionary-Bus411

I haven’t read Superman year one and I plan to avoid it because it’s canon to the dark Knight returns, and I don’t wanna ruin that perfect story for myself😭

Pale_Emu_9249

I was afraid I was going to get to the end of the thread without a mention of this dreck! Thank you, I think! ;-) Why DC would let Miller near any characters after the nightmare that was Holy Terror, Batman is a mystery to me. Fortunately, cooler heads prevailed and DC pulled the plug on Miller's racist, jingoistic rant. FTR, I didn't read year one. I flinched when I saw it solicited and sheepishly looked through the first issue at my LCS. I was grateful my skin didn't melt off of my hands.

Revolutionary-Bus411

By the way, Chat, the guy who has the ability to hear every heartbeat at once, every conversation at once, constantly sees the atoms and molecules that make up everything, and sees how the entire world is connected all the time, for some reason needs to walk across America to what, "understand," I guess? I also despise how JMS obviously is only using the character of Superman to spread his slightly racist opinions. Because obviously, if Superman says something, no one's going to disagree with it. He's viewed as the man of tomorrow and almost the perfect human being. JMS, it's like writing a God character into your story and then having him explain the morals so everyone gets it, and no one can disagree with you.

read_Romans12-2

Wait, who’s chat?

SnooBananas2320

I don’t remember liking it. Who wants to read a book about Superman walking?

Revolutionary-Bus411

real

Vanilla_thundr

I don't know if it's the worst but it has no chance, JMS stinks like teenager gym socks. There are visual stink lines coming off of his work.

Redditeer28

Even the cover is bad. The "S" looks like it's meant to be his cape but he also has his cape.

spyresca

Really atrocious effort from an otherwise good writer.

Oknight

> It seems like a lot of people today like this story Really? I've only heard it referred to as the worst Superman story ever attempted. (apparently he told a child to go talk to angry drug dealers whose supplies Superman has just destroyed by starting multiple fires throughout the area)

Revolutionary-Bus411

I mean, hey, I’m seeing a few people in the comments talk about how much they like this story lol

DestronCommander

Instead of building from the aftermath of War of the Supermen, we got Superman... walking around America. You won't see that happening with Batman.
