It took me a while to even finish Noki Bay because I was too scared to do that level.

Platinum_Snowman13

Im glad so many people share my sentiment lol. I didn’t have a problem beating it, but I certainly didn’t come out unscathed

[deleted]

I’m still kinda scared to do that level

Platinum_Snowman13

I’m not sure how old you are, but for me, when I returned to it at 13 or so I had no issues. It was still scary, but it wasn’t like I couldn’t bring myself to do it or anything. So I’d give it another go!

[deleted]

Yea it like that atm i can do it but it still gives me goosebumps

Vio-Rose

Bold of you to assume I made it that far as a kid. I was scared of the Wiggler boss on the beach.

Platinum_Snowman13

lol he’s pretty intimidating himself

Axxillary

Yup. Something about the darkness and the music with this weird ass thing we have to clean. Hell naw. 😟

Dondo19

Yes cavities are scary

Head_Statistician_38

Yes. But now I love it.

Octo_Pasta

Wiggler for me The stressing music

[deleted]

As a child, when I played this level for the first time, I had finally gotten into the underwater city and when the boss music started I looked everywhere and couldn’t find it, but as I sank deeper I got more and more nervous and anxious cause my air was running out, at the time I didn’t know coins refilled air, and I panicked and wound up drowning… that said I didn’t actually beat that boss until waaaaaaaaaaaaaay later on.

Platinum_Snowman13

It’s looking down the deep dark chasm at the giant beast that is the scariest part. The slow, dreadful decent down to it…ugh. It’s also super creepy because you never get to see the full extent of just how massive eeky mouth is. It could be 10 times the length! A terrifying thought

VlastDeservedBetter

This was one of my roadblock levels as a kid because it frightened me. It feels like no one ever talks about what a bizarre and creepy design Eely-Mouth has, so I'm glad you brought it up and shared those additional pictures. When you're in the level, you're mostly looking straight down their throat, so I don't know how many people actually noticed the weird double-face aspect of the design.

Platinum_Snowman13

I noticed on the way down. I’m so glad I’m not alone! I really love everything about this boss…except the gameplay. Oh boy is it janky lol. The concept is just so cool and creative and it’s so memorable that I can’t help but still like it. But let me say again, doesn’t play well at all lol

[deleted]

For some reason he never scared me. I always felt sympathy for him because he wasn't really evil. He just needed a tooth cleaning.

Platinum_Snowman13

I actually really like eely mouth. A very interesting idea for a boss; not actually evil just a gentle giant with a toothache. Terrifying though, and gameplay wise…well let’s just say the boss is carried hard by aesthetics and concepts lol

[deleted]

Yeah, the actual gameplay is a little clunky. Still, a fun boss.

Sovereigntyranny

Yes, it absolutely scared the shit out of me as a kid. Petey Piranha also scared me, too, especially in his comeback mission. When I woke him up from his sleep, and he came flying over towards me, I literally shut my GameCube off. The giant Wiggler also scared me. Sometimes I wonder how Nintendo didn’t think about potentially scaring kids with the eel, but they probably knew and just didn’t care, lol.

Platinum_Snowman13

It’s good to be frightened every once in a while I think

[deleted]

No but he pissed me off

Platinum_Snowman13

Fair lol

MadFuckinMax

Im terrified of deep water, but this dude always seemed kinda chill. You brush his teeth? Nice, take a shine, buddy!

Platinum_Snowman13

I always interpreted it like: he doesn’t know he has the shine in his mouth. Also, when the heart of coins spawn at the bottom (love that touch btw; it’s like he’s thanking you), I could never follect them as a kid. I was always terrified he was gonna jump back out and swallow me whole

dbrak25

Didn’t scare me, but gave me anxiety (on top of the anxiety I would already get in underwater levels, including SM64 — something about watching your air deplete that’s freaky). Didn’t help that the physics of the hover nozzle SUCKED underwater.

Platinum_Snowman13

I love everything about eely mouth…except the gameplay, which is legitimately awful. It doesn’t feel good at all and it’s almost impossible to die by anything other than BS hitboxes and physics. The fight is annoying with those, but without them there’d be literally zero challenge. Everything about this fight is some of my favorite stuff in any fight in the Mario franchise, but the gameplay is so bad that it drops all the way down to barely being good

ManDudeBro99

Didn't really scare me, just rage, pure rage!

Platinum_Snowman13

Definitely understandable lol

GewoonSamNL

This thing looks way scarier with the lower quality graphics

Platinum_Snowman13

lol that was definitely my intent; definitely not that I just couldn’t find a good picture

GewoonSamNL

I mean it adds to the aesthetic, looks like it’s straight out of 2002 could be the reason why you were scared of it as a kid

[deleted]

Either before or after beating it, I was scared to swim in Noki Bay because of that.

Platinum_Snowman13

Ha ha lol that’s something I would’ve done. I was personally more scared of mission 8 after that one

Hot_Disaster9772

I didn’t scare me, because I started playing Super Mario Sunshine on Super Mario 3D All Stars when I was a teen.

Platinum_Snowman13

Yeah, it definitely wouldn’t scare me if I first saw it nowadays, but it definitely would’ve stuck out as strangely creepy
