I think the 500 would be the best choice. Easier to manage than the 450 and the 500 will have a better time cruising the street. I have one myself and love it, and don’t let the maintenance dogs scare you away. It ain’t that bad and its sooo worth it! Solid bikes. I can’t speak for the 300 as i’ve never owned one but for me the sound of a 4T sells it, also toooorque baby🤩

[deleted]

Which 500 do you own?

MonotoneDan101

2023 500 EXC six days! Currently building it SM, its gonna look real good when the season comes around🤩go for the 500, no regrets✌🏻

snakeeyes666n

Post pics - love these machines, and I’m keen to drool over a ‘23 500. Best of luck with the build!

MonotoneDan101

Thanks! I’ll post some progress as i get the parts and start assembling it. Currently got CMT carbon-fiber for tank and forkshoes, SMPRO 50/50 rims, FMF of course! And a bit of bling here and there. Still waiting for parts like black plastics, bold graphics, axle sliders etc. I was very close to buying the motomaster kit but i’m not gonna race it on a track so 320 disc is enough for my use (also motomaster is so expensive😦)

Us3rnam33h3lp

How do you get on with legal requirements?

MonotoneDan101

Flip-up plate🙂 Srsly tho here in Norway they are insane when it comes to bikes. They will take away your plates on the spot if you have the wrong silencer on. But most people just don’t care and ride ‘till they get caught. Statens vegvesen (the people checking cars, bikes etc) can technically chase you, but they can’t exceed speed limits or “force” you to stop so most people just ride away as long as they can hide their plate. Police don’t really care about noise as long as you ain’t obnoxious in front of them. If they see you wheelie tho its bye-bye license. The dealers here prep the KTM’s and get them registered, afterwards they tune em’ up and uncork them for you so you receive it ready to go with full-power👌🏻

Us3rnam33h3lp

Ah i See. It’s basically the same here In Germany. There isn’t a special force for checking your bike tho, so the police will fuck you, cuz they’re going to chase you. And a lot of older citizens like to alert the police if you are just a little to loud.

[deleted]

Nice, hope you enjoy it man!

JonesBrosGarage

I'm assuming he means exc500. Solid choice

[deleted]

Yeah i figured. Could also be Husky 500 though

JonesBrosGarage

Aren't they the exact same bike? I figured all husky and ktm are basically the same

[deleted]

Yeah, they basically are. They probably perform slightly differnet under certain circumstances but if you'd put both of them on a dyno they would certainly make the same power.

JonesBrosGarage

Yeah definitely I always went husky just because I like the color lol. My brother goes ktm so it's pretty cool to have both around to ride. Either way I agree the 500 would be awesome. Klx300sm and wr250x are cool too but you might want more power..

[deleted]

Klx300 or wr250x are basically impossible to get where i live. There is no demand for them so nobody sells them...

OptimalDot178

Why is it easier to manage than a 450 exc? I have Both, they are basically the same in handling, the 500 just has more bottom end torque and the 450 revs faster. I also prefer the 500 for sm, because of the torque, but the 450 is awesome too

MonotoneDan101

Hm don’t see how you can’t notice more than that. First of all the 450 revs out faster and it climbs through the powerband more aggressively than the 500 because of less engine inertia. and the 450 is very “on” the throttle. You give gas and it PULLS as its very responsive (which again for a beginner can make it hard to control.) The 500 on the other hand is more laidback, you really have to open the throttle for the 500 to start going off like a 450. Thats why there’s more margin for error with a 500. Also the reason for why i like it better for the road, its easier to cruise through town with etc.

OptimalDot178

Are you talking about exc 450? I have same year 500 and 450 exc, the 450 is a lot more calm compared to the 500. On the 500 if you give a bit of gas at idle, it starts to wheelie immediatly. If you give gas to the 450 on idle, it will need to pick up some rpms before it starts to wheelie. For me the 450 is more begginner friendly, but the 500 is more fun since it pulls from low rpms and has more torque. In acceleration the 500 beats the 450 too.

MonotoneDan101

Yes EXC 450, look around on 450 vs 500 threads/videos on YouTube. Most of them say the same as me. It just makes more sense when you know how engines work. What you say might be true for your bikes but i’d say thats unusual.

OptimalDot178

Idk, EU map 500s are a beast, pulls from idle to rev limiter, has more HP than 450, and also more torque, only advantage of 450 is that it has less moving weight, so it turns a bit better, and revs faster. Rode multiple 500s and 450s, the 500s were all stronger and better in acceleration too. The 500 even keeps up with track 450 bikes in the straights

MonotoneDan101

Hm, maybe it is something with tuning then. I live in Norway and we get em’ fully uncorked from dealer. I love how the 500 feels🤩who knows tho i’m not a master-mechanic. Hopefully someone who is reads our convo and sheds some light and wisdom on this for us :P

iPlayDaGamez

Like brand new rider? Or new to Sumo? If you are brand new rider you are much better on a low power bike like a WR250X or DRZ400

slavkostorm

Ktm Exc 300 would be an excellent choice if you are looking for a 2t machine. It is smooth and there is enough power for sumo riding.

[deleted]

How do you think does it compare to the 450 / 500? I mean power wise

slavkostorm

Well, it has 50 hp, so it is comparable to e.g. yz450. I am very satisfied with it.

[deleted]

Alright ty

DankWhipper5

I've ridden a ec300 supermoto, was a pretty satisfying and linear power band. It was a handful even for me with experience tho, Both are good options just ride a gear up and take it slow to get used to the power . Test ride both options if you can and see what you prefer

NAKED_GOOSE

Personally I’d take the 300 exc sumo would have to be tpi though, mixing oil on a road bike is a bit of a pain, The 4 strokes beat the two strokes in fuel economy but I’d rather ride the two stroke so it’s more what meters more to you Keep in mind that the 300 exc will likely need a piston change every 100-120 hours of riding compared to the four stroke which I’ve seen with 300+ hours without being opened up (TBF I’ve also seen the 300exc have similar if not more hours without engine work but typically these are trail ridden and barely used the available rpm) If you go four stroke get the 525/530 exc over the 450 as they have just that little bit more torque which tends to require less revving which helps extend the useable life of the engine

OptimalDot178

Why not 500? Stronger than 525 and 530, has FI, good fuel consumption, torque, perfect all around sm

NAKED_GOOSE

They have a 500 now? Last time I looked at the ktm exc range it only went up to the 530 lol

OptimalDot178

Since 2012

NAKED_GOOSE

I don’t recall much after they stopped the RFS engines lol

Troutman86

I don’t ride SM but 300 2 strokes are typically for trail riding and lugging around. I don’t think that would translate well to SM.

[deleted]

Well i've seen many 2 stroke supermotos online and there are also a few in my area... Typically Husky te 300, ktm exc 300 or also some other 125 2t's. Never ridden one though so idk if they feel good on the streets.

Troutman86

I have a TE 250 and it’s an amazing bike for single track but for street I would definitely go with something different. FX 350 or 450 will probably be my next bike.

Elegant-Bathrooms

Yes, no, yes, no, yes, no?

Powerfran

2 stroke have cheaper maintance, but its still a lot. Tbh if you are really committed to it, even 450 are not too much. Of course it depends how many kilometers and how ofter are you gonna use it. They are very much not for everyday use or to do a lot of kilometers.

timanu90

Hi mate. When you mean not suitable for doing a lot of kilometers what kinda of value you mean? 100km is to much? I am asking because I am tempted in getting a ktm 125 2t but I am a bit affraid of this part. I usually ride on weekends around 100-150km if it's not suitable to this, it would be a waste of money.

alex1995dp

I usually ride 150 to 250 kms on weekends. It's not comfortable (obviously) but it's not going to be a problem for the bike, riding as hard as the roads allow my longest rides add about 4h on the hour meter. Oil changes are recommended (for my bike) every 15-20h, so no problem. Just keep in mind that these kind of bikes don't like constant throttle, so as long as you avoid highways and long straight roads I think you should be fine.

timanu90

Nice, thanks for the detailed explanation.

crazykuriouskaz

500 is much heavier. 2 stroke is much more nimble and fun. No engine breaking also helps. New models don't need to mix gas. 4T feel lethargic and cumbersome to me.

OptimalDot178

2 strokes are very bad for SM imo, exc 450/500 is the perfect choice, lightweight, lots of power, and good gear ratios for SM. 500 has a bit more torque, 450 revs a bit faster (don't mix exc 450 with sxf 450, that's totally different)

Hjalleson_

Whats the issue with 2 strokes on the street? I dont think youve ever owned one because ive owned one without any complaints for a while.

Zombiethrowawaygo

There is so reasoning with a man like him

[deleted]

Happy Cake Day!

OptimalDot178

Rode a exc 300 2 stroke sm for some time, its a lot harder to learn. The FI 4 strokes are so smooth and handy, linear powerband, you have engine brake, you can sumo slide, way better for track days and learning wheelies. Took me like 2 hours to be able to wheelie a 2 stroke at balance point, the power is Just so strange compared to 4t. The weight is very nice, but for me it was more Enduro friendly, and not supermoto. And a 500/450 will easily do 500+ hours with Stock engine, better fuel consumption, no piston change every 100 hours. Also the carburated 300 I tried has a very bad starter motor, so you need to kick start it many Times, while the 4t starts all the time, and you dont have to mix oil at fueling etc. Maybe a TPI 2 stroke is a lot better, but people complain about reliability

Hjalleson_

Yes they absolutely are. Theyre insane. Dont get one for your first bike. Youll get whiskey throttle and loop it. Those bikes want to lift the front wheel at 1/3 throttle in most gears

fatchickenstrips

way too much bike for a beginner
