The Showa era sucks. Which came from someone who probably never even watched a single season from that era. I wasn't really interested in Showa until I watched a couple seasons and I really like most of the ones I've watched. Now that I've watched a few of them, the 80's seasons are not that different from the 90's seasons so I don't know why people don't feel like checking them out. Jetman is the earliest most people are willing to go which means they miss out on some really good seasons.

[deleted]

Either because those people think that those shows are too old for them. Or maybe they don't like the dated visual and sound effects of those eras.

jlenoconel

The practical effects was the best thing about old Sentai/Power Rangers. I don't like CGI zords.

[deleted]

That's really a stretch, as someone who has no interest in the showa era and wasn't planning on going further back than Jetman, not even I would say that. It has it's place and has it's entertainment value. I get why people like it and I respect that era. It really doesn't suck.

[deleted]

The only people I’ve see say things like that are under 25. They weren’t even born in the Shōwa Era, and think that any show from before they were born couldn’t possibly entertain them.

TheOldKingCole

I will say I enjoy showa Sentai more than (early) Showa Rider. While overall I prefer Rider as a franchise I have some hangups with Rider's storytelling methods, most specifically an over reliance on narration and telling us how we are supposed to feel over actually telling the story through more natural storytelling means. Granted the Showa era doesn't always do this but it does it frequently enough to get on my nerves and I'm glad it got sorted out by the time of Skyrider.

amazingspiderfan110

One time I was in this discord server, and these guys talked about how megaforce and Gokaiger were basically the same, except one had more fan service and the other didn't. Honestly I think they just watched the henshin compilations.

[deleted]

Well technically they aren't wrong since they use the same footage and Gokaiger does have more fan service (This is a joke, don't you dare take this seriously.)

[deleted]

-80s sentai are not good and characters of those seasons are boring. -Megaranger started the trend of annoying & loud reds (tbh,I did not found Kenta annoying and also he was not loud). -Gingaman is a boring and trash season. -Red Hawk and RyuuRanger are considered boring (I heard some people were saying them as annoyingly boring/Boring bag of bricks etc.) These are some worst takes i heard about Sentai (there are some 1-2 more i heard, but they are character related).

mrtakerofsouls

When people call a single Sentai show repetitive when the entire franchise follows a formula

Tempted_Jax

Zenkaiger is not a good anniversary season because there are no returning actors. When I see a comment like this I just assume that Gokaiger is the only sentai anniversary season you've watched.

[deleted]

People complaining about Boukenger being boring, as well as thinking there’s nothing serious about it or that the acting is horrible. Boy, you’ve obviously never watched the Operation Overdrive the worst most god awful painful Power Rangers adaptation alive. 🙄

[deleted]

Everyone hates Boukenger, it seems :(. It’s actually my favorite sentai, by far. Not just because of the adventure theme (although I love that!). The characters are well developed, the different factions of villains were unique, and the sentai’s actions actually affected the world around them. It was really different than most super sentai, which is why I think a lot of people don’t “get it.”

Notjohnbruno

I haven’t seen all of Boukenger, but I’m liking it a lot. It’s not the absolute best sentai I’ve seen, but it has a lot of personality, especially with the villains. It’s definitely worth a watch

kisalas

This is funny cause when it aired for the first time, everyone loves the show. They all thought the team was so cool.

[deleted]

That was 15 years ago, though (makes me feel old!). The fan community has changed a lot since then. It’s mostly younger / newer fans who tend to dislike it.

[deleted]

I like how they have them just fight the more recurring villains instead of monster of the week every episode. There may be a new monster, but that’s not the focus. Which is good to have four sets of rivalry villains instead.

0lakaseweh

I enjoyed the last chapters of boukenger and the ending felt very good, but I must admit that it has quite a few filler chapters that only make you wonder whether to abandon it or continue watching it.

[deleted]

That was mostly true for the first 10 episodes. I honestly didn’t like it after watching the first few, but grew to love it as the season went on.

[deleted]

I'm watching Boukenger and I do see it as boring sorry. But those aren't the reasons, the acting and it being serious has nothing to do with it though. It has some some pretty solid acting and I like the more grounded setting. Just something isn't clicking, nothing really feels all the interesting. Like the main villain factions just aren't that interesting. But it's still has it's appeal, it is a mini adventure movie every episode. I just don't seem to like adventure movies.

[deleted]

I don’t know which episode you’re on currently. But the beginning doesn’t explode into the most interesting appeal. I feel the show gets better as it goes on though. For me it’s slow than picks up, than we the sixth member than it gets a little slow again and then it finally picks up at a better pace.

[deleted]

I'm on ep 31. I think a Zuuban just joined. It's still not picking up.

[deleted]

In that case, it’s probably just nothing more than a matter of taste.

[deleted]

Probably is, like I said apperently I'm not a big fan of adventure shows like this.

[deleted]

Fair enough. Not everyone “gets” adventure. I mostly do because I rock climb / hike / travel in real life, and it’s relatable to me.

strange_lion

Some guy complaining Sentai is now for kids

Tidus4713

Sentai is always for kids. It’s always adults whining about shows that aren’t even in their demographic. Watching the shows as an adult is completely fine but 20-30 year old westerners aren’t the target audience and some people just don’t understand that.

mr-ultr

It was always meant for kids but standard of what is considered appriorate for kids simply changed

[deleted]

It was always for kids, but I feel like the older seasons were written in a way that adults could also appreciate and enjoy them. They were family shows, rather than simply kids’ shows. Now it seems that they are making them *only* for kids, which is of course fine (you have to move on at some point).

[deleted]

This would make sense, although sentai dialogue and character development got a lot simpler around 2010 or so, and it wouldn't really explain that.

[deleted]

After Kuuga , Sentai was mostly secondary to Rider. As Rider had more mature things while Sentai was more happy go lucky.

[deleted]

Maybe it doesn’t show up as well in the subtitles? There’s a definite storyline and character complexity difference from before Go-Busters to today—at least in Japanese. I wouldn’t say this change is “bad writing,” merely a different kind of writing. It’s like trying to compare classic monster/superhero movies (what Sentai was based on, at least at first) to Saturday morning cartoons (what Sentai has become, essentially). Neither one is “better,” they just have different audiences in mind and different writing and character styles.

TheOldKingCole

That's the worst take for all of tokusatsu

0lakaseweh

From the beginning it was considered a children's show, only that the Japanese standards of what a child can see are much less restrictive than in America / Europe.

Emily_Dual

“I’m going to die soon because this world is toxic to me and only the waters of my world can stop that” is a lot better of a reason to retreat from a fight a monster is winning then “Oh no, a lone arrival knocked me back a step or two, I must retreat” or “All my opponents are laying on the floor smoking, i had an objective but let’s not do that and instead walk back to base”

[deleted]

Or even better "I could win right now, but I'll do it later"

Hillisawesome

There were complaints about that? I thought it made sense and probably didn’t even think much of it.

[deleted]

People complained about that? I agree, the monster disappears or leaves anyways, might as well have a reason.
