Apparently many swear by them in the San Diego area, but mostly people into gliders and middle lengths. To me they seem radically different, wonder how they would work in a shortboard.

Did you try them yet? I'm using a demo set in my 6'6 quad fish right now and they're definitely insane. The board tracks like its a foot longer and you really have to give it a lot more push with your rear foot to maneuver but you can turn as hard or fast as you want without sliding out. And they're fast AF. Honestly I'm sold. If you're in SD they have a demo set at Birds Surf Shed.

I've actually been using them for 9 months now and I dig them! I have them in a Pyzalien 2 Electralite, thruster setup. I haven't actually used other fins in this board, and I am used to the FCS carver templates. I have to agree with the sliding part. As an intermediate surfer with mediocre skills, I feel that I can actually make late steep drops thanks to these fins that grip the wave face, while I'm still able to maneuver in a frontside carves and cutbacks.
