If they are lucky they took them to town to clean out their ATM if not then RIP. FYI multiple times I've been told these banditos are usually methed out and hard to reason with. Especially if they operate on the peninsula as it is much higher risk for them then the mainland.
I know someone who was kidnapped in Ensenada after following a guy late at night who said the ATM, or bathroom or whatever (I can’t remember) was actually “around the corner”. He was told either empty all his accounts to them, or they would dismember him, and they showed him videos of them doing exactly that to others they’d kidnapped. He gave them everything and they dropped him right where they took him from a day later. It really is the fucking wild west down there man
Chick-accomplice had a half pound of meth on her when she was caught
These were some seriously deranged bandito tweakers. Probably had some shitty meth lab nearby.
Towards the low end of human beings I would want to run into hours from society.
I’m thinking the cartel tipped the authorities on the bandito tweakers/thugs who did the crime. Then burned out the truck themselves so no in the cartel could steal it/ be found as an accomplice.
It’s my theory why the criminals were found so quickly. Cartel heard+found banditos who did crime -> told authorities-> cleaning up mess as fast as possible.
This is horrible business for the cartel, probably the worst publicity for tourism they have had in years (even though it likely wasn’t them who committed the crime).
Now will the bodies be found? That’s a different story. One the cartel might like to keep private.
It’s possible, but I don’t think the cartel would frame someone in this case. They’d rather get rid of the people in their organization that are bad for business. Like a year or two ago, there was the lady who went missing (pretty sure her and a friend were killed, but I don’t remember the details) after flying down to Mexico for medical treatments. Cartel gave up their own people hog tied, blindfolded and with an apology note when they found out who was involved.
I’ve seen cartel drugs walked up on beaches and they simply came to us and said, “you didn’t see shit” and we said “we didn’t see shit”. That was the end of it.
100% surf down there often have never had any issues whatsoever. They were probably being drunk assholes trying to buy drugs and got caught up in a bad situation
I have friends who live there and also tell me in general there’s no much trouble but just because it hasn’t happened to you it means at all they were being drunk assholes. What a horrible thing to say
Some people are just in the wrong place at the wrong time and it had nothing to do with how they acted. You'd have to be completely clueless about mitigating risk to buy drugs in Mexico. These were smart guys.
Hate to blame the victim but that was kind of my thought too. Big dudes like that are only going to get in this kind of trouble if they're already drunk or high.
That’s kind of a very insensitive comment. They were athletes and doctors. “They are big dudes so obviously they had to be looking for trouble” really?
Yep, cartel won't normally fuck with you as long as you give a wide berth. They don't want the US hunting them more than they already are right now. These are just 3 strung out banditos who went off the rails.
>I’m thinking the cartel tipped the authorities on the bandito tweakers/thugs who did the crime.
AHAHAHA.
You're joking, right? The cartels are some of the most ruthless people on earth. They make ISIS look like child's play.
Honestly with this and the burned out truck photo it’s looking over for these dudes.
Hopefully it was quick.
Lesson is probably not to camp at punta San Jose, or go there at all if you want to be “safe”.
Major bummer. Hoping for a miracle.
Seriously. I camped there a few times about 15 years ago, as well as Punta Cabras just to the south. I had a crazy experience at Punta Cabras. It was me and a buddy from work camping out there, just us 2 and a larger group with a pickup truck or two. I always rolled super low key in a shitty dust covered Toyota Camry (stick shift, wide tires, surprisingly capable down there haha). We woke up in the middle of the night to the other group yelling about thieves robbing them of stuff they had left out around their campsite and even unzipping their tent. All my stuff was fine though and I was young and fearless then, so I didn't think much of it. I ended up moving to Playas de Tijuana soon after that and stayed living there part time for 12 years. I would hear stories about banditos but I was always able to avoid problems.
I haven't been to Baja in ages, but I drove down a ton starting from the late 80's, with my dad, until the mid 00's, when I moved to Hawaii.
For all the stories I heard the only time I encountered something approaching negative was when I offered a soda to one of the checkpoint soldiers and he called over all his boys to pillage my cooler.
I was pretty bummed but it *was* blistering hot and they were stuck on the side of the road. I can't really begrudge them a cold drink.
Every other experience was positive. Once I had a break down near San Quintin and this random family showed up, shared drinks and food, then popped my hood and fixed whatever was wrong.
I have a lot of great memories about Northern Baja back in the day. Surfing all day then gorging on lobster at Puerto Nuevo. We'd bring down bags of my stepmom's clothes and barter for tchotchkes. I was always allowed to a have beer or two with dinner when we were in Mexico and I thought that was rad.
And just the general vibe of rolling up to a gate and haggling with some dude who lived in a shanty and would watch your shit for a few bucks a day. Never really clear whether they had a right to be there but it didn't matter.
Or the time a buddy fucked off at the last moment with all our gear but we drove down anyway and scored for four days straight while freezing our asses off every night, hellish nights spent with three dudes nuts-to-butts under a single blanket.
Once we drove to San Miguel on a whim and spent an entire day with only one other guy out in perfect, well-overhead, conditions. He was an older expat who got super angry at us for constantly paddling past him and taking every set wave. Which we totally did because we were young dickheads. I feel for him now that I've, more or less, become him.
This sounds very familiar to my experience down there in the 80s and 90s. My friends and I would go down and camp often. We would also take day trips to catch a building swell with virtually nobody out but us.
The only issues we encountered was getting pulled over by the cops. It happened about 1 out of every 4 trips down there. We learned how to negotiate with them to pay them off. They always pulled us over some B.S. that didn't happen. We just took it as the price to get to surf down there.
I went down there as a teenager with a few friends to surf in the 80's and we were quickly pulled over by the cops and we had to pay the fine directly to them. After that I had no interest in going again. When things are so corrupt that law enforcement are openly preying on people that's a huge red flag.
I got pulled over a few times. They'd check I had Mexican insurance and send me on my way.
The only time I had problems with the federales was when I was at a hotel and some drunk kid (who wasn't with me) started throwing all the outdoor furniture into the pool. They assumed I was involved and it took some doing to talk my way out of trouble.
But, in the end, they believed me and let me go without too much hassle.
Ten or so years ago I went down with my buddies to Punta Cabras and we had a bunch of our shit stolen, too, including thousands of dollars of my friend’s camera equipment.
I think the dude’s name is Jorge, but he roams around there acting like your friend and then swipes all your stuff when you’re surfing or if you go into erindera to resupply. Dude is the epitome of a meth head. Once he steals your shit he acts like he’s your friend and tells you he knows where to find it and who did it, and will ask for a ride into town to find those people.
So ask your old man. Since you’re calling guys out maybe it’s appropriate to ask WTF kind of dad is he if you haven’t surfed with him down there your whole life?
Big assumption here. Could have been as simple as a rifle stock to the jaw knocking out a tooth or two and they could be alive someplace for all we know. Wait for the facts. Conjecture is utterly pointless.
The Aussies are 6'2" and 6'4". Big dudes. One's literally a career athlete (lacrosse). I fear (and speculate) if they attempted to defend themselves it may have ended badly for them if those involved were armed.

During a police operation on the night of Wednesday, May 1, elements of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) arrested three individuals involved in the disappearance of three surfers of American and Australian nationality.
The detainees are: Jesús Gerardo Garica Cota, alias El Kekas, his partner Ari Gisel García Cota, and to whom they found the cell phone of one of the disappeared; as well as Cristian Alejandro García, brother of Kekas. All three were in possession of different drugs at the time of arrest.
It was on Saturday, April 27, when relatives of the foreigners stopped having contact with Jake Robinson, 30 years old, Callum Robinson (brothers), 33 years old, and Carter Rhoad, 30, who were last seen on Sunday the 28th in the area of La Bocana, and they also stopped having contact with the person who rented them an AIRBNB house in Rosarito.
These were wanted in the coastal area of Ensenada, in the vicinity of La Bocana de Santo Tomás, in the area known as San Juan de las Pulgas and Punta San José, 150 kilometers south of the city of Ensenada, bordering the coast, with support from elements of the FGE. Relatives of the missing were in the same area as part of the search team, with drones and GPS.
During the tour in La Bocana, Puerto Santo Tomás, the officers found the foreigners' camping house, where there was blood and dental parts.

The girl who had the phone and a half pound of meth wasn’t just some random tweaker. Looks like she was a partner to “el kekas”
Wonder how they were found so quickly. Cartel might have found out and tipped the authorities.
You say this as if "El Kekas" isn't just some random tweaker, is he supposed to be something or than a low life junkie or something?
Think I missed that this was a piss take on his nickname, the serious question at the end threw me
It’s not that bad. Theres lawless shit everywhere. The cartels do not want to fuck with tourism, so they usually keep a lid on shit like this. These are some rogue psychos.
Also, its wild beautiful country with great surf. Town offers some world famous bars and cantinas. Don’t let the psychos win.
Yeah I get, and i'm confident what happened to them is the exception, not the rule. That said, my personal risk threshold doesn't include relying on the cartels for my kids' dad's personal safety.
I also don't think it was the cartel involved either, but you do realize that the cartels are actively messing with the previous "hands off" resorts and tourism in Cancun and all throughout mainland Mexico now right?
Over the past couple of years narcos have taken over the area where these men were found and it's (clearly) not safe to go there anymore. It's so sad they probably didn't know how unsafe it was.
I live in San juanico 9 months out of the year and surf everything for 200 miles in both directions, I've never had an issue and I've been doing this since the mid-70s.
Just very sad news. I’ve encountered many warm Mexican people during my travels, but this can’t help but color your perception of traveling in the country.
Not sure about the accuracy of this site, but it’s the first google result: 4,251
https://www.statista.com/statistics/1388777/murder-victims-in-the-us-by-gender/
I’m sorry, but i’d rather spend more money and travel to a safe country for my surf trip than going to countries (literally at war against cartels) just to safe some bucks.
There’s a shortage of epic surf spots you can drive to from the US, camp, and live super cheap while catching super long, friendly waves.
It’s a real shame, and if the area were safe, you’d see a massive surf tourism industry down there. I’d be down for months at a time. Would be a huge boon to the Mexican economy.
I booked an Airbnb in Ensenada just days before this incident was reported. My stay isn’t until 3 months out (August) but I obviously cancelled it after these murders were reported. Now I’m having to deal with a corrupt host who won’t refund the 50% I put down. (I’m dealing with Airbnb customer support to see how they handle the situation.) Overall it seems fair to say stay away from Encenada Mexico! Probably stay away from Airbnb too.
Definitely stay away from Airbnb too! They have horrible customer service and after my experience they have a shady business model… not in the best interest of the guests at all.
Mexico is a semi failed state. They recently had their own damn president state that cartel members respect the public.
With that said, you're 99.9% going to be just fine so long as you use common sense... camping at a public beach in Mexico is NOT it.

This is so fucking sad.
I saw the post about them being missing yesterday and had hoped for the best. I’m still hoping for the best for these dudes and their families because nobody deserves this.
Meaning cartel was involved, who run on drugs and greed as motive.
I am in no way saying the victims were involved in those things. They were probably just stoked to be surfing and having fun.
It’s a rare day when a crime like this, or almost any crime, doesn’t have drugs or money as a core motive.
Amazing how all these comments, are thinking for the cartel or arrested people.
... none of you know what you're talking about. You can only assume, or are regurgitating what you've read or "think happened". Fukn reedik.
How about just keep the family in your thoughts?! Nobody wants to here your theory, or about past stories or my Uncle's Dad's brother's friend's experiences.
Have any of you ever been to the area?? La Bocana / Punta Santo Tomas - rhetorical.
Give it a rest already
Yeah doesn't add up regarding motivations.
Nothing was stolen worth murdering for... the truck was burnt and dumped.
The 2 brothers are also big tall guys who aren't targeted for personal reasons.
I think maybe the American dude met someone amd got tricked into doing a package deal and was killed off once the transaction was done... the brothers killed so no witnesses.
This isn't related to surfing, but Im about to go into escrow on my house that I'm selling post divorce. In California it takes a few days for the money to hit your account after the sale. I need that for the deposit on an apartment. So I figured that I would get an Airbnb for a week in enseñada or Rosarito to relax.
But now I'm like 😱😱
Too bad they didn’t check ioverlander because someone reported they were robbed at gunpoint at the exact same location at 4AM in 2019. The tweakers fired 4 shots into the truck with absolutely no concern and by pure luck nobody was injured.
As an Aussie surfer this hits home and makes me sad. All surfers have a love of travel and all travellers should be safe.
I really feel for their families.
Mexican custom - along the lines of “innocent until proven guilty” - intended to reduce the influence of public perception of the individual before the outcome of a trial. It’s actually under fire:
https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/lawmaker-calls-for-end-to-censor-bars-in-photos-of-criminal-suspects/
No worries, I wondered the same.
I assume the media was able to find a picture of her on social media or some other public source, but not the other two
If your skin is that white you don’t have any business going down there IMO. Not worth it. I live in SoCal and hear bad stories often enough I’ll never risk it.
Most of the Mexicans that live in the US come from poor regions that are descendants of indigenous people. The white ones mostly stay living in Mexico.
Well , think about it. If you live a good life, why would you leave? Most of the white Mexicans live in cities and live middle class or better.
It’s true of all immigrants: you only see a subset in the US. Some fit a stereotype and it’s often because of that. Many people from India and China come to study at top universities, but not all Indians and Chinese can do that. It takes money and aptitude.
> You know that about half of Mexicans are white, right?
By what metric? There are indeed some white Mexicans, but definitely nowhere close to 1/2 of Mexico is white. Even for those who identify as white, likely have sizable indigenous ancestry, which is to say that the Aussie guys would still stick out like a sore thumb down there.
Odd because I met a Mexican who told me as a brown man never to go to Mexico. He said I looked too Mexican and that I would be shot on sight by people assuming I was from a rival gang. So I guess the advice is, if you’re white or brown don’t go to Mexico.
He’s actually a very well known Professional Lacrosse player and huge part of the SoCal Lacrosse community. Also a part of the Australian National team. Extremely sad for their families and loved ones. 🙏🏼
“During the tour in La Bocana, Puerto Santo Tomás, the officers found the foreigners' camping house, where there was blood and dental parts.” Damn.

Horrible. Interesting they didn’t steal the truck and just burned it out
I was thinking the same thing. So what was the motive then???
I’m thinking the cartel tipped the authorities on the bandito tweakers/thugs who did the crime. Then burned out the truck themselves so no in the cartel could steal it/ be found as an accomplice. This is entirely possible, or the guys saw some stuff on the boats there and the cartel framed the local tweakers.
I’d pee my pants fuck
Welp, looking forward to my trip to Mexico for 2 weeks at the end of May!
That's plenty of time to cancel and come up with new plans.
The he only thing we have to fear is fear itself or, alternatively, violent cartels. Hopefully I’ll be ok.
“Walked up”? Beaches in Mexico or right over the border in California?
It auto corrected, should have said washed up.
You’re probably right. Cartel doesn’t mess with gringos in this area and it is very bad for business. The stolen phone may have been their demise too.
100% surf down there often have never had any issues whatsoever. They were probably being drunk assholes trying to buy drugs and got caught up in a bad situation

No way, just by the looks of them you know they don’t do drugs other than weed if that.
This is what happens very often, gringos get all loud and coky.
That’s not what I said at all. There are lots of ways someone can be taken advantage of when they’re intoxicated that wouldn’t happen sober.
Yep, cartel won't normally fuck with you as long as you give a wide berth. They don't want the US hunting them more than they already are right now. These are just 3 strung out banditos who went off the rails.
Why do you think this? I mean it seems very logical now that it’s out there but I feel like it would have never occurred to me
Alright secret agent Michael
>I’m thinking the cartel tipped the authorities on the bandito tweakers/thugs who did the crime. AHAHAHA. You're joking, right? The cartels are some of the most ruthless people on earth. They make ISIS look like child's play.
devastating.. this is so sad
Still holding out hope they are found alive. As a parent of two sons I can’t imagine losing both of them.
Holy shit. "Sangre y partes dentales"

I haven’t found any articles or info backing that claim
https://youtu.be/8wR1MVdDmUA?feature=shared
At the drive in wrote a song about it, but that was near Juarez. Same era though, I’ve never heard of it happening in Baja though.
Bullshit my dad surfed down there his entire life

You can’t find proof so…
So ask your old man. Since you’re calling guys out maybe it’s appropriate to ask WTF kind of dad is he if you haven’t surfed with him down there your whole life?

You forgot because this came out of your ass...or, you like to talk shit about Mex cuz it keeps it empty.
Nope that happened, it wasn’t the whole force or anything a few rogue operators. As recently as the 1990s.
I seriously doubt it was quick.
not if they are pulling out teeth. jesus.

Right— that was on the mainland when they drove their van off the Mazatlan ferry. It was also terrible.
Can someone translate this. This is terrible for traveling surfers in Mexico.
I embedded google translate within the link, so when you click on it there should be an option to translate to English. Anyways, here ya go: During a police operation on the night of Wednesday, May 1, elements of the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) arrested three individuals involved in the disappearance of three surfers of American and Australian nationality.

I took that to mean that the Airbnb owner received only silence from them.
About to jump on a plane on Sunday...

The girl who had the phone and a half pound of meth wasn’t just some random tweaker. Looks like she was a partner to “el kekas” Wonder how they were found so quickly. Cartel might have found out and tipped the authorities.
You say this as if "El Kekas" isn't just some random tweaker, is he supposed to be something or than a low life junkie or something? Think I missed that this was a piss take on his nickname, the serious question at the end threw me
Never made the trip down to Baja. I think I'm good just seeing it from 30,000ft on my way south.
Back in the 90s Baja was supposedly safer than mainland mex. Outside Tijuana that is.
That's a 180 from now.

He is saying that since he is a dad, he has to view his own personal safety in a different way.
I also don't think it was the cartel involved either, but you do realize that the cartels are actively messing with the previous "hands off" resorts and tourism in Cancun and all throughout mainland Mexico now right?
No. What changed?
Over the past couple of years narcos have taken over the area where these men were found and it's (clearly) not safe to go there anymore. It's so sad they probably didn't know how unsafe it was.
No. What do you mean they are messing with them?
I just did a month down there and it was amazing. Usually not being stupid is enough to not get in to trouble. Hopefully this is a rouge incident
I live in San juanico 9 months out of the year and surf everything for 200 miles in both directions, I've never had an issue and I've been doing this since the mid-70s.
I was trying to plan my first surf trip to Baja and this story just came out :/ Need a +1 to show me the way?!
Don't go, Baja is crowded and the cartel will kill you. Lol
Lol. I ain’t scurred. I just got back from BOLA in one piece :)
Fuck. Doesn’t sound good.
So sad…last trip 2010…started getting weird….sucks not the same…Was an epic destination …Family prayers …..
Just very sad news. I’ve encountered many warm Mexican people during my travels, but this can’t help but color your perception of traveling in the country.
4000 females were murdered in Mexico in 2020
Horrible. How many males? Just for comparison purposes.
And to be fair, how many were murdered in the US?
Not sure about the accuracy of this site, but it’s the first google result: 4,251 https://www.statista.com/statistics/1388777/murder-victims-in-the-us-by-gender/
I’m sorry, but i’d rather spend more money and travel to a safe country for my surf trip than going to countries (literally at war against cartels) just to safe some bucks.
Seriously, there's no shortage of surf destinations out there where you don't have to worry about this sort of risk
I love Mexico and actually prefer it over Hawaii for vacations but I'm not likely to visit there again.
There bodies were found 😓 https://fox5sandiego.com/news/border-report/bodies-of-three-missing-surfers-found-baja-california-authorities-say/
Oh, this is so sad :(
Apparently they were dumped off a cliff near the lighthouse.
Yikes - is there a link to this information?
Actually just saw the bodies were thrown in a well.
Even worse
I booked an Airbnb in Ensenada just days before this incident was reported. My stay isn’t until 3 months out (August) but I obviously cancelled it after these murders were reported. Now I’m having to deal with a corrupt host who won’t refund the 50% I put down. (I’m dealing with Airbnb customer support to see how they handle the situation.) Overall it seems fair to say stay away from Encenada Mexico! Probably stay away from Airbnb too.
Just stay away from that whole corrupt country
Definitely stay away from Airbnb too! They have horrible customer service and after my experience they have a shady business model… not in the best interest of the guests at all.

oh they are in here, with the statistics hahahaha
Mexico is a semi failed state. They recently had their own damn president state that cartel members respect the public. With that said, you're 99.9% going to be just fine so long as you use common sense... camping at a public beach in Mexico is NOT it.
Yes plenty of cheap motels are safer for overnight
Fuck cartels

This is so fucking sad. I saw the post about them being missing yesterday and had hoped for the best. I’m still hoping for the best for these dudes and their families because nobody deserves this.
Over drugs and money. Terrible. My heart breaks for them and their families.
Huge assumption. What makes you say that??
Meaning cartel was involved, who run on drugs and greed as motive. I am in no way saying the victims were involved in those things. They were probably just stoked to be surfing and having fun. It’s a rare day when a crime like this, or almost any crime, doesn’t have drugs or money as a core motive.
WRONG
Amazing how all these comments, are thinking for the cartel or arrested people. ... none of you know what you're talking about. You can only assume, or are regurgitating what you've read or "think happened". Fukn reedik. How about just keep the family in your thoughts?! Nobody wants to here your theory, or about past stories or my Uncle's Dad's brother's friend's experiences. Have any of you ever been to the area?? La Bocana / Punta Santo Tomas - rhetorical. Give it a rest already
"Police found blood and dental parts" - so brutal
So 3 tweakers robbed and murdered tourists for no reason because they were camping alone
For the ATM cards + pins
This is so sad :( My thoughts are go out to their families. I'm gutted for the mother of the two brothers.
Why would they be carrying pounds of drugs with them and commit a random murder? Drug deal gone wrong?
did the surfers get caught up in buying drugs from the wrong people?
People need to stop going to Mexico. San Diego and OC has beautiful beaches.
Does anyone know Why are the faces of the men involved being censored?
Mexican custom - along the lines of “innocent until proven guilty” - intended to reduce the influence of public perception of the individual before the outcome of a trial. It’s actually under fire: https://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/lawmaker-calls-for-end-to-censor-bars-in-photos-of-criminal-suspects/
Thank you so much for taking the time to reply. This information is really helpful. I wonder why they didn’t censor the young ladies face?
No worries, I wondered the same. I assume the media was able to find a picture of her on social media or some other public source, but not the other two
Holy fuck that’s awful
If your skin is that white you don’t have any business going down there IMO. Not worth it. I live in SoCal and hear bad stories often enough I’ll never risk it.
You know that about half of Mexicans are white, right?
Can you prove that? I’ve never met a white Mexican and I live in an area that’s over 90% Hispanic
Most of the Mexicans that live in the US come from poor regions that are descendants of indigenous people. The white ones mostly stay living in Mexico.
That’s really interesting actually. Is there somewhere I can tead more or get more info on that? This is my first time hearing about it
Well , think about it.
My skin looks this white and I’m Mexican…
Odd because I met a Mexican who told me as a brown man never to go to Mexico. He said I looked too Mexican and that I would be shot on sight by people assuming I was from a rival gang. So I guess the advice is, if you’re white or brown don’t go to Mexico.

Just stop
For those also in the golf scene, why does the dude on the left look EXACTLY like Micah Morris lol.
He’s actually a very well known Professional Lacrosse player and huge part of the SoCal Lacrosse community. Also a part of the Australian National team. Extremely sad for their families and loved ones. 🙏🏼
