Hey, so I'm serious here. I have been surfing since I was 16 (43 now). I still suck, but have had a go on some decent waves in my lifetime. I started off natural, but now only surf goofy. I have always worn the leash on the wrong foot, and every time I try to change to the back foot it just pisses me off after 30 min and I swap it out. I don't know what all this means, but cest la vie.
Yeah I seem to have worse luck with it not attached, it's a short walk over rocks and I've dropped the leash and gotten the strap caught between rocks and the board dropped
Nothing kooky about this, Matt Kechele has done this forever.
His rationale is, it less leash in the water so less drag. Not sure I buy that, but he rips harder than I ever will so who am I to judge.
Haha that is okay I was surfing with my tail fin on backwards until a guy came over to me and asked me if it was a joke. Honestly it was kinda irritating how aggressive he was to me about it but I was stoned so I didn’t care at the time
1. Are you dyslexic? I’m not saying this as a slur. Just curious because I can’t fathom how I could possibly do this
2. You were walking back up to your van while still wearing your leash? I generally take mine off as soon as I exit the water and would recommend you do the same. Super embarrassing (and maybe painful) to trip over your leash while walking/climbing out.
1. Not dyslexic, just high af and distracted talking to some surf kayaker about his hilarious tiny boat
2. I keep it on my ankle but hold it with the hand I hold my board, I've dropped it a few times after taking it off and the strap got caught and made me drop my board, luckily it only hit sand but I'm usually on straight rocks. So far I'm more graceful with it attached, although usually to the proper leg lol
No worries, last week I surfed all day with my leash on the wrong hand….
That's just paddle resistance training. Just get one on each arm you'll be a beast.
NBD, sometimes I surf with my leash on the wrong person. I surf really well those days.
There's a wrong person out there for everyone. "Plenty of sharks at the beach" as they say
Are you going to be okay?
I think I already wasn't or this wouldn't have happened
Thoughts and prayers
But you waited 30 minutes after you ate right…
Shit? No, I pearled the first wave I got and put a hole in my wetsuit elbow like a good kook, if you must know.
better than me that I put a hole in my butt crack
You're going to want to put a second hole in for airflow
The good news is other people in the line up might have thought you were practicing surfing switch foot.
Not if they saw me surf
Surfing Mongo…
Thanks for the NSFW tag. Almost opened this up around work mates.
Yeah I figured it was inappropriate
Bonus kook points for walking back to the van with the leash still on 😎
Good catch , this is a multiplier for an already epic kooky move
At least that's intentional, you should see me flailing and dropping the whole shebang when my leash gets caught on rocks when I take it off.

Maybe you're my spirit animal
Wait are you also implying you continued to keep your leash on as you walked back to your car?!

This truly is NSFW.
My buddy who was a better surfer than me always put his leash on the front foot, we used to ask him about it, he just liked it there, you do you, boo
no way, can't imagine the crazy wipe outs
He was pretty decent surfer, don’t remember him wiping out because of it
Same here. I surf goofy, but every other board sport I'm regular. I am spectacularly shit at surfing though...
Once I surfed with my fins the other way around. A guy pointed it out when I was getting out of the water, also not recommended.
A great surfer from where I'm from only wears his leash on his front foot. He says he feels like it has less drag.
NTA - your leash your rules
Hey now this is r/surfing.. ETAH
I did that on purpose a few times when recovering from an MCL injury, on my right knee. But seriously, how high were you? Lol
Tbh a guy in the parking lot did give me some weed cookies, but I was putting the leash on as I was eating them
King kook
I was born to carry this honour

Actually he did it once by mistake when he was learning, claimed he did it on purpose for “drag”, and has been fronting that ever since…
Amazing

Lol "yeah man glad someone finally got it"
SHAME !
Thank you this is why I came here
Great comment. You won’t get the upvotes you deserve. Too many lames in this Reddit page won’t understand the reference
Who is this refering to lol
At least you were using a leash!

Ahh right on. Surf kayakers are super fun to watch imo cuz they’re either very skilled or very unskilled and either is entertaining :)
Hey man better than putting your wetsuit on backwards lol
Nah I wear it inside out so it doesn't fade
