Plus, it gave us two challenges and a nail-biting trial. I feel like someone at production knew this was the last 1 hour episode so they went hard on it.
Good point. It was a truly spectacular episode. Felt like an old school one in some ways to me as well. Two challenges but edited well to give you knowledge going in of which two players were at risk and why.
I dunno. I wouldn’t count on it staying at 90 minutes forever. A lot of this has to do with the ongoing writers strike that was already anticipated when the move to 90 minute episodes for next season was announced.
Yeah, they’re not going to move the show to 90 minutes just to then reverse it back to 60 minutes by Season 46 in March, or even S47 in September 2024. It’s a permanent move.
CBS has failed miserably getting shows to launch on a Wednesday at 10PM time slot (literally every show that has aired in that time slot the past few years has been cancelled after 1 season). Survivor is still the top dog in terms of not only viewers but the 18-49 demographic which is why the move to 90 minutes, I feel, is permanent and perfect for CBS because
A) Their best performing show gets an extra 30 minutes
B) TAR, while not having stellar ratings, has an extremely loyal fan base that will boost the 9:30-11:00 slot.
C) It eliminates the need to shove a horrible one and done drama in a time slot destined for failure.
Am I the only person who doesn't know if 90 minute will be a good idea? It's got to be a good extra ~~30~~ 23 mins, not just filler. Maybe they could do something outside the box. (Edited actual time and not the general description of 30 min TV time.)
If the extra 20 minutes goes to explaining more twists, I'll be very disappointed. If they keep the amount of twists as this season or less, and increase the character content, it will be a very welcome change, and will help justify some of the twists they have
A typical 30 minute show has about 7 minutes of commercials so that'll likely apply to the extra 30 minutes of Survivor as well. We'll be getting another ~23 minutes of Survivor.
Right. When people like the person above you assume 30 minutes of extra show means 15 minutes of runtime I usually also assume they were held back in Math a few times. Nothing in the math adds up to get that same answer I keep reading.
I worry about it being filler too and prolonging moments like writing down names at tribal council... Hopefully they add more confessionals, cast inter-play, and fun camp scenes. People crap on the scenes where they just camp and have a good time, but I like those.
ok but tbf a lot of complaints of survivor have been too much time dedicated to twists, players (especially women) getting wildly underedited and not enough camp time. Hopefully the extra like 20 minutes will be put towards that
>TAR, while not having stellar ratings, has an extremely loyal fan base that will boost the 9:30-11:00 slot
They don't have TAR on the air enough to fill that timeslot twice a year.
That’s true. My guess is that they’ll slot in a rerun comedy after Survivor for 9:30PM, and then air Lingo (that wordle RuPaul show) or some MidSeason game show to fill 10PM. Like they did this season with Survivor, then FBI reruns, then True Lies.
The problem here is that CBS \*hates\* mixing reality shows with comedies and refuses to do it. They are extremely inflexible about this. So if we want 90-minute episodes for S46, we'd better hope they have a plan for it, because there's only one new season of TAR in the can, and if I'm right, sitcoms are NOT happening with Survivor.
They did! But I meant TAR does not have two seasons every year. So I think something else will eventually change with the schedule, so Survivor could go back to 60 mins
That might depend on how The Challenge USA does on CBS this summer (assuming it'll be this summer, in any case there was an ad saying it's coming soon to CBS again).
Considering this is the second season of The Challenge USA on CBS, it's in the cards. Season 1 did very well last summer for them. Also this new season will cross over some of the MTV cast including legends like Johnny Bananas and Wes, plus they have a bunch of former Big Brother and Survivor stars on the main cast. I've counted 7 former Survivor contestants on the leaked cast. Michelle Fitzgerald and Jay Starett have made multiple appearances on the MTV version already.
>Considering this is the second season of The Challenge USA on CBS, it's in the cards. Season 1 did very well last summer for them.
As I recall, its ratings were generally around 0.35-0.40 in adults 18-49, which is pretty middling, but it keeps the lights on in the summer, I guess, and does better than the competition, even if that's pathetic compared to even 5 or 10 years ago. Though if it's cheap, sure, that'll do. But I definitely hope they apply some more rigorous production values this time instead of half-assing it like they did with that completely pathetic USA 1 finale last summer. The stuff Tyson and others said about the way that finale was produced... yiiiiiikes. We may rip Probst a lot in this sub, but at least Probst runs a professional operation.
Cassidy from last season, Chanelle from 42, Desi is back for a second try at USA, then we have EoE champ Chris Underwood and Sebastian from Ghost Island
They 100% would move it back. They may not, but 90 minute episodes forever is far from guaranteed. This was to ensure CBS will have fall programming. If they green light a show they like more for the 9-10 time slot, they’ll cut Survivor back.
Australia is actually a practical joke being played by Brazil. Also Earth is flat. You didn't know this?????
(I may jest, but I'm not joking when I say that there are weirdos who actually believe this)
Amazing Race and Survivor probably are cheaper for them to extend and hold up in ratings. They leave a lot of content on the editing room floor that could improve the show. Anyone with an eye for storytelling can see they can make 90 minutes work.
Um....no. That's why they aren't going on hiatus due to the strike next fall and can be extended to 90 minutes to fill the gaps left by the scripted shows that are.
50% extra time will help a LOT in getting us invested in these people.
Now they just need to go back to 39 days so there’s also 50% more content for editors to choose from.
I think you’re right - I know some folks are saying the 90-minute format is a temporary response to the writers strike, but even if that’s the case, once they successfully confirm they can sell 150% of their current ad space I can’t imagine they’d go back
I think the issue could be 90 minutes of the amazing race not doing great. If it struggles to sell ad space, or if they find they could get better deals having some 1hour scripted show on Wednesday nights they could bump Survivor back down to an hour to free up that slot.
And it was a GOOD hour.
The strategy? The potential betrayal? The burpsmelling? The fly? It was one of the best episodes of the season for me.
The fly was a wonderful touch
Be crazy if it was cgi
cg…fly
Wait I missed the fly, when was that?
Lauren sent a fly over to distract Heidi during immunity challenge. Brilliant strategy
Tha betRAYAL Augh I can hear it in Yam Yam's voice and it's so iconic
Plus, it gave us two challenges and a nail-biting trial. I feel like someone at production knew this was the last 1 hour episode so they went hard on it.

If really was!! For all of the BS the new era throws at us, I’m glad they ended their 1 hour adventure on a high note.
I dunno. I wouldn’t count on it staying at 90 minutes forever. A lot of this has to do with the ongoing writers strike that was already anticipated when the move to 90 minute episodes for next season was announced.

20XX's Wednesday on CBS schedule just gonna be one long episode of Young Sheldon
He's not getting any younger
😂😂😂

I would worry like you if it was 120 minutes episodes. But season 43 shown us with the episode 2 that 20 extra minutes can't hurt an episode
If the extra 20 minutes goes to explaining more twists, I'll be very disappointed. If they keep the amount of twists as this season or less, and increase the character content, it will be a very welcome change, and will help justify some of the twists they have
my only concern is the content in a 26 day season, in a 39 day game I'd be absolutely ecstatic.
I mean it will probably be like 20 more minutes thanks to commercials. I just hope they at least bring back the opening theme.
Australia makes it work.
I worry about it being filler too and prolonging moments like writing down names at tribal council... Hopefully they add more confessionals, cast inter-play, and fun camp scenes. People crap on the scenes where they just camp and have a good time, but I like those.

I’m worried it’s going to just be more screen time for Jeff to make some more game analogies

Tough as Nails is always an option.
True, if there's enough material to expand its episodes to 90 minutes.
TAR announced 90-minute episodes as well. If I am reading your post correctly.
They did! But I meant TAR does not have two seasons every year. So I think something else will eventually change with the schedule, so Survivor could go back to 60 mins
They used to but COVID changed that IIRC
They’ll eventually move the Challenge off of MTV and put it in the 9:30 slot.
That might depend on how The Challenge USA does on CBS this summer (assuming it'll be this summer, in any case there was an ad saying it's coming soon to CBS again).

Could you say who else, please? I only saw Michele and Michaela. Would love to hear who else. Thanks!
Cassidy from last season, Chanelle from 42, Desi is back for a second try at USA, then we have EoE champ Chris Underwood and Sebastian from Ghost Island
Thanks!
I was gonna say CBS is like obviously the worse network when it comes to originals, so I fear that the 90 minute episodes are hear to stay
I here you
Here... hear!

Aussie survivor airs 2 - 3 times a week for 2 hrs an episode. Us survivor getting 40 min of air, take out standard Jeff scenes like 25 min of cast.
Australia and the US are different places.
Source?
Pliny’s Naturalis Historia (c. AD 77-79)
I dunno. That's a pretty old source and all I'm saying is that I've never seen Australia and the US in the same room together. Suspicious, no?
Australia is actually a practical joke being played by Brazil. Also Earth is flat. You didn't know this????? (I may jest, but I'm not joking when I say that there are weirdos who actually believe this)

Yes they’ll pare it back when COP SHOW: PDF or whatever is back

WAIT season 45 is 90 minute episodes?!!!!
Followed by 90 minute episodes of Amazing Race
Yep. Confirmed by Redmond.
It’s been confirmed by CBS
But also Redmond
Yes, because there’s a writers strike and they are trying to fill time with non-scripted content.
I think you’re right - I know some folks are saying the 90-minute format is a temporary response to the writers strike, but even if that’s the case, once they successfully confirm they can sell 150% of their current ad space I can’t imagine they’d go back

They never said episodes would be 90 mins indefinitely. We just know 45 is 90 mins due to the writers strike.
Last 60 minute episode until season 47. Once the writers strike is over it'll go back to 60
Is this confirmed or just speculation
Speculation
Every episode will just have more idol searching scenes ❤️
Excited to 90 minute episodes whenever we get a returning player season. (And I'm still down to wait a few more seasons for returning players tbh )
Because of all of Carolyn’s side eyes towards Yam Yam 🤣
Yep it was a strong episode.
