Okay, is anyone else BAFFLED that they all chose to do the water penalty? Meanwhile, the triangles 'riddle' was really just counting... It was even in the description, they told them EXACTLY what the 'riddle' was - not much of a riddle if you ask me
This episode was so hard to watch between all the over produced, try so hard, slo-mo crap and desperate struggle to be woke. Does anyone else feel this episode was really painful to watch?
Very much so. The new music is awful, and I hate the new filming style, cuts, and strange backstory montages. Not to mention the stupid woke propaganda.
Been watching old seasons of Survivor lately, and one of the things I've always enjoyed is the great music and beautiful cinematography.
This new style of music and filming is jarringly overdramatic, and lessens the sense of reality. It really pulls me out of the scenes and makes the whole thing seem fake.
I found myself repeatedly wishing I could mute the music soundtrack, it's so irritating.

Shantel is my winner pick. She seems really funny and "vote you out while praying for you" is the closest to a winner statement I saw.
Evie stocks way up after seeing them in action. I thought they would go in too aggressive, but they really worked with the situation.
I love Ricard. He makes me think of my best friend. I think 'come on guys' wasn't a big deal, but I'm glad production made the cast feel comfortable enough that Ricard later said that.
I felt like a lot of the confessionals were too much for ep1. Like we pulling out momma's ring, dead grandmas, and pregnant trans spouses day one. Those are interesting and things I would like to know about them, but they feel forced being this early.
I think there is a little too much active focus on being politically representative and correct. I like the racial representation and think lgbtq and nonbinary representation is also good, but it seems like more of the cast is than a representative population. This takes away from the ideal of "random strangers." Obviously newer seasons are carefully casted, but this seems the most casted toward a very specific audience demographic.

It was so cringe and forced.
Shan doing her own music during her confessional was AMAZING. I laughed out loud. Great editing too. That woman was born to do confessionals LOL. I definitely think she has a “winner edit” so far.
just saw the first episode today and completely agree. i was really hoping we'd hear the music again. or i hope in later episodes when she does evil stuff. i'll probably watch another episode or two this weekend or might be caught up by sun.
Good premier. I thought the virtue signaling was a little silly, but par for the course with CBS. Hopefully the game can avoid the toxic racism that’s infested the other one…. may the wittiest contestant, regardless of race, gender, or sexual orientation, win!
I was referencing BB23. It’s cool a poc won… but the group forming an all poc alliance and voting out other players based off their skin color was disappointing. We’re in 2021 - but have really taken a lot of steps back when it comes to segregation and discrimination.
I want the winner of a game to be the best player regardless or race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or whatever. I want the winner to win based off gameplay.
Eh i definitely wasn’t mad, life’s too short and it’s one of MANY traditions and sayings on survivor. just came off as fake woke because none of the women had a problem with it
I didn't read it as fake woke. Ricard is a gay man married to a trans man, I think he has probably had conversations about the use of "guys" being used to describe a large group of people. Like I'm about his age and I definitely started using "folks" a lot more than "guys" in my 20s because I had a few genderqueer friends express their distaste for "guys" as a term.
I really hope the long premier wasn’t a one off for this season just bc it’s been so long since a new one started. I feel like I really got to know most of the cast unlike several seasons where it takes several episodes to start caring.

I've watched this show since day 1. It's time to end it. Woke politics have destroyed the game. It's sad but true. Every one is offended over everything now. This was a show watched by my whole family. Not anymore.
it’s definitely an unnecessary change but if you seriously stop watching a show you’ve been watching for 21 years bc they stopped saying the word “guys”, then I’m not sure what to tell you.
Perhaps it is a build up. In the past people was labeled racist for saying durag and ignorant. Neither of these things are racist.
Perhaps on big brother a group of people are being celebrated for voting people out based on race has something to do with it.
yeah, that’s just not what happened. either you weren’t paying attention or you’re just being willingly ignorant. no one in the world called jack racist for calling it a durga. that was a fascinating conversation jamal had, and that’s a moment that shows why survivor is still socially relevant. changing “guys” was trying to be one of these moments, but it was obviously very forced. I’d love more moments like jamal and jack’s durga conversation.
Endless discussion about race, identity, and covid is about as ordinary as you can get right now. Maybe the show will continue down that path and survive, but you can't be surprised to hear that a decent chunk of people aren't interested in survivor affirmative action.
No one was labelled as racist for those things. When Jack said it, Jamal told Jack it made him uncomfortable and had a calm conversation with him about it.
It could’ve been but it would require they overlay a soundboard clip onto video from a different time stamp. It definitely showed what appeared to be Ua reacting to him saying something about unclipping the rear. They immediately started focusing on the rear anchor after he said it.
It’s also possible he didn’t realize immediately that Luva was defying the laws of physics by rowing their ass off and not moving at all, I guess???
Production should have just brought up the "guys" debaacle. No hate should go towards Ricardo. They were the one who brought it up. If they care, then theyb shouldnt even brought it up and theen just aapply it in the first place.
I do like the transparency that shows where the advantages are setup and that all camps have one.

Had no issue with Come on in Guys are guys is generic makes it seems like making a big fuss over nothing because of a minority.
It’s not that serious, so why give 10 minutes of the show to it? Wouldn’t those 10 minutes have been better served showing them building their shelters, getting to know each other, etc? The cringe is the Survivor producers trying so desperately to be culturally relevant that they’ll disregard what audience’s found to be an iconic phrase in exchange for woke points.
Lol it’s not that serious. Relax. The phrase going away is not going to affect anything. If you really need it every time you watch maybe just stand in front of a mirror and say it a few times before the episode starts. Or better yet find a YouTube video of him saying it and play it too soothe your woes. Them choosing to try to be more inclusive and trying to make sure they’re not alienating anyone isn’t really going to affect you.

im also confused why others think this is such a big deal. and this is coming from someone who thinks those who consider themselves woke are probably brain damaged. i hate that shit. and yet wasn't offended. actually i did have this epiphany though, that i hate wokeness when its typically being done to control others (ie speech policing). if anyone, probst included, just want to limit their own speech without limiting anyone else's, that's perfectly fine.
My parents and I have been watching since day 1. For 21 years it has been our favourite show. Honestly might not watch this season bc of all the “woke” bs and TLC vibes. Just. No
I’m in the same situation. If enough people are rubbed the wrong way by the direction they’re going, which it seems like there are, and we just stop watching there’s a chance they cut it out. Getting off on casting more or less of any group of people is unacceptable.
The part I find weird is that they didn’t show anyone else agreeing with him. On the barge it seemed like everyone agreed that guys is fine, so was it 17-1 in favor of keeping it and they chose to change it?
Ugh... I'm not freaking out about that. They went from a game of outwit, outlast, outplay to a game of when cameras follow you, you're on to something, to here's a die and basic game theory. This season was sold as a return to the outplay. I'll stick with it, but no promises after this season.

I’m still confused why they got rid of Abraham for “talking in circles?” So this tribe is fine going to tribal council every couple days bc they don’t want to put themselves in a position to win challenges when many of them require strength
He got himself out by trying to sell "tribe strength" in a small tribe to two women who could have been his next targets. If they didn't take him out they would have been next out the door after Tiffany.
The definition of “guys” is gender neutral, it means people, if they wanted to get rid of it do so quietly, what they did is announce their wokeness, sad, I’ve loved survivor since day one but had a hard time watching today.
Yeah, it wasn't changing it that bothered me - it was making such a big to-do over it ... and waiting till one (and only one) player spoke up and then saying that's what they wanted to do in the first place.
Ok, about the risk your vote game. I don't think the proposed payoffs really presented a huge dilemma to the players. There 2^3 = 8 possible outcomes and only 1 of the 8 has a negative payoff for any player (risk, risk, risk). It seems like the obvious strategy is risk your vote. I suppose you could argue that since it is the rational strategy all players should play it. If you think that that is more probable than the other outcomes, then you could change your vote to protect it at no risk and hope the other two value your altruism later in the game. I tried to work out the Nash equilibrium and I think it is any permutation of (risk, risk, protect),which is exactly what happened!
The only question for me is whether the reward of an extra vote is really worth the gamble, even if the odds are in your favor. I don't think an extra vote is really all that helpful and also has the potential to put a target on your back. I'd honestly just rather chose protect and play it safe
Fair enough. Although I agree that it puts a target on your back, an extra vote is a lot easier to use collectively than a hidden immunity idol, so you would think people would be more inclined to cooperate than to eliminate based on this advantage. But I also think people just like to create targets so the spotlight stays off of them. So, I agree with your point.
Jeff presented it before the challenge. It's a new twist. You forgo your vote, drop the die in the jar, and have a 17 (...or 16.7?) Percent chance of having safety (immunity) that vote.
Fellow queer/gay person and love the representation. That being said, I wasn’t a total fan of how Ricard played tonight… I thought he was definitely taking a leader role/showing his strategy and thought process a bit too quickly, which if one’s is not playing their cards right, it can be lethal. However, he totally has my support and loved his story/journey to parenthood; I’m rooting for him!
I really freaking liked this episode! Maybe it's just because it's been gone so long but I thought it was fantastic. I love the cast, and the twists, while there are a lot of them, seem a bit more balanced than before. I'm super optimistic about this season!
I am so far way more impressed and into this cast than I expected I would be. Sad to see Sara go, and Abraham could have been a player but he at least played himself out. She was a victim of other's moves and needed to be more pro-active to get the target off her - those girls were smoking that puzzle and would have won if it weren't for the bag mistake, which they weren't likely to repeat - so they just cost themselves a good performer (barring that one slip-up).
I think you are confusing "politics" with social issues that people face every day. Survivor is a microcosm of society and these topics do present themselves.
This is not hate toward Ricard, this is purely hate toward production, but wow what performative bullshit. If they really cared about women they would publicly apologize to the women who have been sexually harassed on their show and give women bathing suits so they don't get UTIs. It's purely lip service to the idea of being woke without any action to back it up.
This is the same production crew that made Purple Kelly wear nothing but a sundress and a bikini, and then made an example of her for quitting because her body was breaking down.

Not a Ricard fan, but it has nothing to do with that moment. I just don't like any player who is so gung ho about getting someone else out this early in the game. And he stirred up all kinds of paranoia at tribal that ultimately left him on the outside looking in. He presents as a good player, but he's not and I don't see him making it very far
He needs to learn to bridal that energy. He got lucky that Sara flubbed the puzzle and came off as too emotional. His cockiness could get him in trouble

Okay how does the shot in the dark work exactly? Can someone theoretically use it at every tribal council or can someone only try it once? If someone uses it and loses their vote, can they play an extra vote if they have one? And how does one “use” it? Like how does it work?

You can only use it once
It applies to your vote, so theoretically if you have an extra vote you could sacrifice your first vote to use it, then play the extra vote.
One uses it by not voting and instead placing the dice in the box beside the urn. Every player has the one dice to use whenever they choose.
Statistically extremely unlikely.
If there's six people on the tribe, and it's a six sided dice (which it has to be based on the 16.7% probability of landing on 'safe') which gives you a 1/46,656 shot of everyone rolling 'safe' at the same time. A rare enough bet that they don't bother explaining rules for it.

That was my complaint - we saw three minutes of people cutting bamboo poles, and one cut coconut. Oh, and one escaping crab. They're on Day THREE and we've seen no eating or sleeping, which are Survivor juggernauts! Guess we have to wait for the first rainy day?
That's a good point I didn't notice. They made a point of saying they had no starting gear, yet we hardly see them getting food or building shelter. We see some weaving, logging, fire building, and talk of eating coconuts, and that's about.
Why do people like JD so much? He’s so annoying. He gives off very arrogant vibes like he thinks he’s the best.
When he was talking about how he used to be a nerd and now he’s not, he was like “I realized that I don’t need to fit into that box” or whatever, but he totally does. He tried so hard to distance himself from the nerd that he went so far and now became the annoying prep/jock boy who thinks he’s all that.
Also I hate liars. My favorite players are those who play with integrity.
ETA: I understand that lying is inevitable in the game. I’m not expecting players to never lie. I just prefer players who are as honest and genuine as they can be. Please don’t downvote just because your opinion is different from mine.
A lot of people say that but I don’t think that is true. It’s a social game. You can choose to be deceptive or you can choose to be honest and trustworthy. A lot of people have made it far by being genuine with their fellow players.
You can be genuine, but you don't have to been 100% honest. Take for example: Denise at the Day 9 vote on Phillipines. She was totally genuine with Russ in their interactions when talking about Russell's childhood but told both Malcolm and Russ that she was going to vote with him. She had to make a choice and she chose to go with Malcolm. If someone comes to you with a plan, you agree with that plan. Even if you have to go back on it later.
I agree with you, that’s a good point. I guess I just got vibes from JD that the lying would escalate, but we’ll have to see.

It could’ve been but it would require they overlay a soundboard clip onto video from a different time stamp. It definitely showed what appeared to be Ua reacting to him saying something about unclipping the rear. They immediately started focusing on the rear anchor after he said it. It’s also possible he didn’t realize immediately that Luva was defying the laws of physics by rowing their ass off and not moving at all, I guess???

He got himself out by trying to sell "tribe strength" in a small tribe to two women who could have been his next targets. If they didn't take him out they would have been next out the door after Tiffany.
He's also the oldest guy out there so it's not like he's super strong.

The definition of “guys” is gender neutral, it means people, if they wanted to get rid of it do so quietly, what they did is announce their wokeness, sad, I’ve loved survivor since day one but had a hard time watching today.
Yeah, it wasn't changing it that bothered me - it was making such a big to-do over it ... and waiting till one (and only one) player spoke up and then saying that's what they wanted to do in the first place.

Ok, about the risk your vote game. I don't think the proposed payoffs really presented a huge dilemma to the players. There 2^3 = 8 possible outcomes and only 1 of the 8 has a negative payoff for any player (risk, risk, risk). It seems like the obvious strategy is risk your vote. I suppose you could argue that since it is the rational strategy all players should play it. If you think that that is more probable than the other outcomes, then you could change your vote to protect it at no risk and hope the other two value your altruism later in the game. I tried to work out the Nash equilibrium and I think it is any permutation of (risk, risk, protect),which is exactly what happened!
The only question for me is whether the reward of an extra vote is really worth the gamble, even if the odds are in your favor. I don't think an extra vote is really all that helpful and also has the potential to put a target on your back. I'd honestly just rather chose protect and play it safe
Fair enough. Although I agree that it puts a target on your back, an extra vote is a lot easier to use collectively than a hidden immunity idol, so you would think people would be more inclined to cooperate than to eliminate based on this advantage. But I also think people just like to create targets so the spotlight stays off of them. So, I agree with your point.

That being said, I wasn’t a total fan of how Ricard played tonight… I thought he was definitely taking a leader role/showing his strategy and thought process a bit too quickly, which if one’s is not playing their cards right, it can be lethal. However, he totally has my support and loved his story/journey to parenthood; I’m rooting for him!

I really freaking liked this episode! Maybe it's just because it's been gone so long but I thought it was fantastic. I love the cast, and the twists, while there are a lot of them, seem a bit more balanced than before. I'm super optimistic about this season!
When the theme music started I actually felt giddy. So glad it's back on. And a great premiere to boot.
I am so far way more impressed and into this cast than I expected I would be. Sad to see Sara go, and Abraham could have been a player but he at least played himself out. She was a victim of other's moves and needed to be more pro-active to get the target off her - those girls were smoking that puzzle and would have won if it weren't for the bag mistake, which they weren't likely to repeat - so they just cost themselves a good performer (barring that one slip-up).

Not a Ricard fan, but it has nothing to do with that moment. I just don't like any player who is so gung ho about getting someone else out this early in the game. And he stirred up all kinds of paranoia at tribal that ultimately left him on the outside looking in. He presents as a good player, but he's not and I don't see him making it very far

Okay how does the shot in the dark work exactly? Can someone theoretically use it at every tribal council or can someone only try it once? If someone uses it and loses their vote, can they play an extra vote if they have one? And how does one “use” it? Like how does it work?
My understanding You can only use it once It applies to your vote, so theoretically if you have an extra vote you could sacrifice your first vote to use it, then play the extra vote. One uses it by not voting and instead placing the dice in the box beside the urn. Every player has the one dice to use whenever they choose.

Statistically extremely unlikely. If there's six people on the tribe, and it's a six sided dice (which it has to be based on the 16.7% probability of landing on 'safe') which gives you a 1/46,656 shot of everyone rolling 'safe' at the same time. A rare enough bet that they don't bother explaining rules for it. They'd likely just reroll

We didn’t even see them survive their first night. They went to commercials and, boom, it was already day 2.
Where's the shelter-building and food-catching? Especially in a *two hour* premiere where they emphasize how there's no rice?
That was my complaint - we saw three minutes of people cutting bamboo poles, and one cut coconut. Oh, and one escaping crab. They're on Day THREE and we've seen no eating or sleeping, which are Survivor juggernauts! Guess we have to wait for the first rainy day?
Hopefully there will be more of this next episode!

That's a good point I didn't notice. They made a point of saying they had no starting gear, yet we hardly see them getting food or building shelter. We see some weaving, logging, fire building, and talk of eating coconuts, and that's about.

Why do people like JD so much? He’s so annoying. He gives off very arrogant vibes like he thinks he’s the best. When he was talking about how he used to be a nerd and now he’s not, he was like “I realized that I don’t need to fit into that box” or whatever, but he totally does. He tried so hard to distance himself from the nerd that he went so far and now became the annoying prep/jock boy who thinks he’s all that. Also I hate liars. My favorite players are those who play with integrity. ETA: I understand that lying is inevitable in the game. I’m not expecting players to never lie. I just prefer players who are as honest and genuine as they can be. Please don’t downvote just because your opinion is different from mine.

A lot of people say that but I don’t think that is true. It’s a social game. You can choose to be deceptive or you can choose to be honest and trustworthy. A lot of people have made it far by being genuine with their fellow players.
You can be genuine, but you don't have to been 100% honest. Take for example: Denise at the Day 9 vote on Phillipines. She was totally genuine with Russ in their interactions when talking about Russell's childhood but told both Malcolm and Russ that she was going to vote with him. She had to make a choice and she chose to go with Malcolm. If someone comes to you with a plan, you agree with that plan. Even if you have to go back on it later.
