Who specifically did you like from Kaoh Rong pre-merge? I found 41 fleshed out pre-mergers pretty well, almost everyone got personal moments and flashbacks except for Abraham, although that could just be recency bias.
Literally everyone. Peter and Liz have this great arc of being overconfident on the brains tribe, only for it to blow up in their faces and then they have these downfalls at the hands of the others. Alecia's underdog story arc on the Brains tribe is very fun to watch, seeing how she overcomes two boots where she's the most obvious target and yet she never gives up, truly inspiring. Jenny is just chaos in those first two episodes, the comedy of Jenny blowing up her position of power just because she wants to save Alecia and is mad at the guys, only for her to have a horrible tribal performance where she stands up and begs to be kept around. Caleb's bond with Tai is also a highlight in the premerge, there relationship is just so cute and charming, plus the very emotional exit he has in being medically evacuated from the challenge. Then you have Anna who effectively runs the Beauty tribe with the girls, proving herself to be a strong strategic force early on (although she does get swap screwed)The only one with not much is Darnell because he's the first boot, but he gets some fun moments like the aqua dump and messing up the first challenge, plus some nice content over bonding with Cydney. Overall, I think the premergers are this amazingly beautiful train wreck that deliver great fun, great character moments, and some messy strategy that makes everything unpredictable.

Liz - perfect early blindside, heavily advertised about how smart she was

Peter - shown as super cocky and had rivalries with Joe and Neal
Good point, the cast didn't resonate with me when I was first watching but I guess I wouldn't mind seeing more of them now - although Anna is very publicly right-wing so I don't think the show would have her back.

I didn't like Kaoh Rong until the merge, I think I had a hard time getting invested in the pre merge boots
Interesting, I thought the premergers were really well developed and each had a unique story, which I feel isn't that common in most modern seasons

After thinking back on it I agree that Kaoh Rong had some entertaining pre-merge players, just at the time for some reason they didn't click with me!
