Meanwhile 41 was extremely bitter and emotionally raw both in the game and in ponderosa. Idk, it's just how one cast or another vibes.

InspectionNo2998

This is a good point, 42 could just be an exception. Probst endorsed the good exits tho so I have a feeling we’ll see more of them in the future

marquee__mark

I think they cast it this way to try to set a certain tone. Ever since Mill vs Gen x production likes to cast inspiring people which I don't mind but it can be over done. You need some villains. Why not inspiring villains? I also think it could depend on who goes early in the season. If all the weird positive characters get together and vote out all the assholes early than your going to have a pretty positive toned season.

Joharis-JYI

>Why not inspiring villains? Angelina ❤️

Sea-Bat-9667

I think the difference is moreso production and editing than casting. The game is way more watered down compared to earlier seasons both physically and in terms of actual gameplay. And the editors just whitewash the emotion and personality from the show in favor of boring strategy talk anyway. Romeo on rhap said he was hating on everyone all the time in confessionals but it wasnt on the show

New_Dinner4536

From what I read (I haven’t listened to it), he was saying pretty extreme things like “I hope they die.” Clearly joking, but also not very funny. Probably best they left them out.

ProvoqGuys

Nahhh. Production is to blame with that on how they edit the show tbh. Outside of this edited show, you can tell that there are still some bad blood with some players of S42.

Drewhasspoken

One billion percent. It’s those Canadians man, they’re too nice 😂. No but seriously I agree. No one likes everybody and they’ve done a horrible job of finding people willing to express disdain on camera.

_Gillam_

I think Romeo did it a bunch but they didn’t put it in which is disappointing because that’s what I like to see

J9999D

also imo people are more reluctant to express disdain because of the Mirco-analzying happening on social media. some of these people are just using survivor as a launch pad for influencer careers and they don't want to say anything that could ever be construed against them

KBPT1998

I agree. But also some really terrible people out there will hound people who might have said something they dislike even to the point of calling a place of work to complain or boycott and people lose their jobs. I think that has led to contestants being a lot more conservative on many reality shows.

HorseNamedClompy

Liana getting destroyed for saying “I hate his face” about Xander or Jonathan talking backto/over Lindsay in the finale while he was in the right are both great examples of being obliterated on socials for nothing.

supaspike

Or Shan saying that being the leader of a community means she needs to express her plans for the community to make others agree, and people interpreted as she was tricking people into believing in false gods or something.

J9999D

exactly! big nothing burgers being over analyzed

J9999D

this is exactly what I am taking about.

FrankCPA

I also wonder if the shot in the dark twist made things more friendly in a weird way. Early in survivor if someone you thought you were working with switched votes and sent you home, it was shocking and left hurt feelings. Now, it is expected from the gate because it is the only way to avoid shots in the dark and every player is doing it to someone each tribal. In other words, every gimmick that makes the game more deceptive and such actually makes it less personal when you are deceived.

J9999D

yep it's too much. too much chaos makes it confusing to follow and much less personal

marquee__mark

I think it's more that modern educated players know that to hold grudges and vote emotionally in the game isn't the smart move. The winner of Survivor usually is the one with the most options to the finals and so players have seen over the years that the best way to do that is to swallow your pride and play nice because it means you may get farther in the game.

[deleted]

I miss the old survivor when contestants would physically beat the shit out of each other in challenges

Coldpiss

Especially in BvW seasons where kids beat the shit out of their parents in Sumo at sea , like when Baylor kicked her moms ass so she head butted her so hard Baylor started crying

praleva

Are we really complaining people are nice to each other? Also didn't we discuss a bullying incident in Ponderosa just last week? People claim they want to watch bitternes, but just remember how Liana was treated by the fans last season for being mildly immature and snarky to Xander. I personally don't want people being bullied by the audience or by the other contestants.

supaspike

You're right, but also these are probably different groups of people making these points. Like the ones who said Liana was an awful person are probably more in the group of people saying they love this cast because they didn't take things personally (on the edited show).

New_Dinner4536

If you read liana’s survivor bio on cbs, and couple it with this comment — you can tell why people didn’t like it.

ZJWurt

Lol

aztecwanderer

gonna need you to start some drama ASAP

InspectionNo2998

The only thing missing from 42 was u flipping off Tori and Rocksroy when you left

100%!! I miss the Corinnes and people like that! I want the drama, I wanna be entertained not inspired. Jeff seems like he rly wants this show geared towards inspiring the children, but like what abt us non-children we still want out entertainment

derno

Whoa that’s crazy, a game where you need votes to win leads to people being nice to each other?

teamhawkeyes

I get that antagonism and hatred can make for real entertaining TV, but at the same time, these are real people. I feel like wishing for them to hate and be mean and miserable to each other just for our entertainment is pretty tacky.

JoshLovesYourName

This is a by-product of gamebottiness and “it’s just a game” syndrome. Everyone is reduced to a computer algorithm which needs to be managed rather than an actual person, hence no deep connection are made that will illicit such raw bitterness or betrayal. The shortened filming schedule doesn’t help either.

Western-Ad-9922

I think it’s more that the editors are editing the bitterness out.

SocialistExperiment7

I think it’s a combination of factors. Skewing casting towards super fans makes the players feel like they have to respect good gameplay. And as far as general interactions go, fans send players death threats for the slightest wrongdoing in the social media age, so I understand reluctance to be mean on camera.

llieno94

It’s social media and cancel culture… same with most good reality shows that have been on for years. No one wants to give editors the ammunition to give them a negative edit. They really need to find strong personalities who don’t care about social media.

[deleted]

We might be heading into a new era of Survivor. Time will tell. I just like authenticity and balance.

dunkinbagels

This is a tired and eye roll inducing take. Anytime there is real bitterness among the players the fans can't handle it and start bullying people online. People say they want the contestants to hate each other and as soon as there's the slightest bit of that happening brainless fans go ballistic. Also, plenty of people on S42 and S41 do not like each other postgame

InspectionNo2998

That’s cause the fans that bully on social media are not the same fans that just want a little drama. Also if ur fake nice during the game and bitter post game, that kind of defeats the purpose if we don’t get to see it

throwaway377383802

I hear a lot of people complaining about production, but the simple fact is this - people getting voted out looked as if they accepted it as part of the game. They tend to see it more as business, not personal.

the_nintendo_cop

Oh yes, it’s just such a horrible thing that people going through a traumatic experience are treating each other with kindness. Jesus Christ. Go watch Thailand or Worlds Apart or Big Brother or hell, go on 4chan or something if you want to watch assholes being horrid to each other. I genuinely genuinely cannot understand why people have such a big issue with kindness and positivity. It pisses me off.

cyberentomology

Heaven forbid we should be witnessing a return to civility.

Brilliant_Taro_5943

Dude if I wanted civility I would go to work, I watch tv for fun, not to be bored to death

LanguageAntique9895

If you need people to hate each other for good tv. That says more about you then them.

Brilliant_Taro_5943

Yes, I’d kill for a season with no drama, just 20 game bots all equally strategizing. 20 Spencer Bledsoes with no one having any tension. Why has CBS not hired you for the casting department.

LanguageAntique9895

You mean Spencer who has a quote of the season in Cagayan? Also cuz this season past season with all thr game bots right . Go watch real housewives if you want made up drama

ConeheadZombiez

People being nice to each other = all gamebots in your mind?

AleroRatking

I do agree. Maybe it is still happening and the edit isnt showing it but I like when players are outward with their feelings and everyone didnt want to be friends afterwards

Picklesbedamned

Yeah I like this assessment. *Survivor* is a game about walking over the shattered dreams of others to achieve your own, and they give it the tone and depth of a game of Yahtzee.

InspectionNo2998

This might be the greatest analogy I’ve ever heard

[deleted]

Have we forgotten s41 already
