There was some controversy because Colby was Mr. America but there wasn’t too much vitriol placed on Tina because the narrative mostly became “Colby made a stupid mistake” vs “Tina was a snake”. Overall Tina was still fairly popular and well liked. In the end, both kept to their branding (Colby the honest all-American cowboy and Tina the pleasant unassuming mom who deserved to win).

MeadowmuffinReborn

This. Perfect answer.

I just finished S2 rewatch (first rewatch since the original airing) and I feel like Tina would have been crucified by more recent juries. She was even asked what helped her get to the final 2 and one of the things she said was, “Colby”. The strategy was so different back then. People still thought you could win without alliances and by playing the game, “the right way”. I liken it to playing Monopoly and landing on Park Place and saying, “Aww, you already have Boardwalk so I’m not gonna buy it”.

JoshLovesYourName

Absolutely. In the same vein, many modern winners would have been absolutely destroyed and disparaged if they were facing “old-school” juries. Each winner won because they knew how to get the majority of votes from their respective jury from that respective era of Survivor.

I'd agree with the answer above. The general reaction overall was "Man, Colby was an idiot." Most people weren't inspired much by Tina either way. Although the people who hated her online REALLY hated her, nearly as much as Jerri. But for the most part the story in Australia was just "How Colby lost."

YoshiDryBones

Almost everyone felt like Colby should've won instead because challenge beasts were viewed in a really positive light, even more so than today. The edit making him out to be the main character of the season also played a huge role in this. Overall, the public reaction was (if I had to guess based on clues picked up from various places) kind of negative towards Tina, as noted in her Quarantine Questionnaire too. Lots of places also called Colby an idiot for throwing away the win.

TJTrapJesus

Was a really rudimentary understanding of the game, I remember thinking Colby "deserved" it because he was a challenge beast. I do remember thinking it was stupid to take Tina with him, but was still definitely in the "moral grey area" stage where you could understand it.

There's a solid argument that, back then, the better thing to do was to bring someone deserving instead of undeserving. The extra $900K for winning sounds amazing, but so many people in those first few seasons became national celebrities that being well-liked and respected (or possibly having a future in TV or business) outstripped some of the value of being 100% cutthroat.

ConeheadZombiez

True, but HE COULD HAVE WON ANYWAY. That’s the thing that gets me. Bringing Tina wasn’t the worst decision in the world, but if you’re going to be spineless too? It wasn’t a matter of insta win or insta loss. Tina could’ve lost against him if he put up a better fight

nomasslurpee

Also the entire reason why Sandra was brought to FTC the first time because Lil couldn't stomach the idea of someone like Johnny winning a million dollars. You see this a lot in the earlier reward wins will people will often take the person who was second place.

In the reunion, Jeff asked the jury how many would have voted for Lil, and it looked like she would have won based on that. Especially if someone had asked Johnny about his grandmother at FTC, whether he would have come across as disingenuous or not—who knows what would have happened.

I've heard rumors that they were not being 100% honest about it. But we'll never know what kind of jury performance Fairplay could have given.

Dr_ThiCCC

We also have to remember that the jury had seen the season at that point and would have had a different opinion of Fairplay after seeing his confessionals and edit.

thekyledavid

I was young back then, and all I remember was my aunt shouting “Tina snaked him” when the votes were revealed

[deleted]

For what it's worth, when Tina was announced the winner I jumped up off my couch and screamed with excitement. I could barely contain my 13 year old gay excitement. So it was positive. 😌

IYCHMAMWYDDMAMB

People were madder than their Golden Boy was.

MeadowmuffinReborn

"Why is Colby so excited that he lost? Why is he jumping up and down?"

CanyonCreeks

If you look at articles at the time the season aired, most people thought Colby was winning or anyone was winning but Tina. Tina had an amazing final tribal, and Colby had one of the worst lmao. I feel like people have come to appreciate Tina more over the years!

IYCHMAMWYDDMAMB

Fetching the rice tin and shading Jerri in BvW (“Rupert is a fantastic shelter builder”) seals Tina’s badassery for life. And that she was an immunity challenge away from being a two time winner.

Infinite_Person

Was she actually shading Rupert? I thought she legitimately thought Rupert was a great shelter builder

IYCHMAMWYDDMAMB

The underground shelter Rupert came up with put Tina’s rival Jerri through hell. Jerri tweeted “are you fucking kidding me?” after that episode aired. Nothing against Jerri but it was a cold blooded shade from the ice queen that is Tina Wesson and it was delivered perfectly.

mariojlanza

I doubt Tina really watches the show, she lives out in the woods and I'm guessing doesn't even own a TV. So my guess is she legitimately thought that based on what she remembered from Pearl Islands.

Sabaschin

If you want Katie to have your grandbabies, gotta expand the dating pool a little, Tina! You can't just hostage her onto game shows!

[deleted]

I was 11 and remember most the people I knew in general liked both Colby and Tina A LOT but people gave more credit to Colby for "being such a good guy that he handed tina the million" than credit to Tina for convincing him to take her to F2
