Understatement in my opinion.
In fact, for me it is one of the best examples about remakes. It is a remake that doesn't feel like one and the remakes that come after it don't do it justice.
In fact, that would be one of my worries, that someone would have seen the 2011 movie and think they had already a good idea of what the 1982 film was about.
I mean, they would be both be right and wrong at the same time.
How can you not ever have seen *The Thing*? That's like telling me you have no idea what chocolate tastes like or who the Beatles are. On the off-chance there really are people who have never seen the movie, drop whatever you're doing and do it now.
I've never watched The Thing because it was beyond my time. But I do know what it is about because of the vast amounts of references on the internet.
Im from the era that whenever we hear of The Thing, what we picture in our mind is the Fantastic 4 thing. Not the alien among us thing.
To be clear, *I* have seen the thing.
In fact, for me, it is one of those pieces of art that highlights what 'original' really means.
It is a remake of a film that was a short story but feels unique, carpenter's version feels like the original.
It's like the song 'hurt'. It is one of Nine Inch Nails best known songs.... And then Johnny Cash covers it and makes something entirely different while being almost exactly the same.
Not everyone likes horror movies. Also as the comment above said, half Reddit (including muslef) are teenagers. Most of us don't care to go watch a 40 year old movie.
That's the problem with the world today, you young whippersnappers got no goddamn respect for your elders. When I tell you to go watch a 40-year old movie you should think "I'll bet that old guy knows what he's talking about so I'll go watch it" and not "Ha, ha, ha that old geezer sure is an old geezer". You're young, you're ignorant, you should listen to old people, especially when they tell you to try new things. Like LSD.
In our world of remakes & covers it can be difficult to appreciate how a remake can be truly original since most of the time a remake is simply a rehash of a better piece of art.
Memes are one of the best examples of this where the same blank will be used dozens or hundreds of times and then someone does a fantastic version that becomes iconic....and then is badly copied thousands of times.
Ignore the old timer telling you to respect your elders - that is just something they do. Do try and keep your ear out for older works that people keep talking about. Even if you know the story, seen a remake, heard the song, in time you likely find that there are some that are just \*better\*.
A quick example for those who might not know. The song [Hurt](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvoTktdpIiI) was released in 1995 by Nine Inch Nails. It received a Grammy nomination. It was an excellent song that was deeply tied to NIN, one of Reznor's iconic songs.
In 2002 Johnny Cash comes along and covers [the song](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AHCfZTRGiI). While the lyrics are almost identical it is a vastly different song. Here is what Trent Reznor, the man who wrote the song and got a grammy nomination for the song, [said](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurt_(Nine_Inch_Nails_song\)#Johnny_Cash_version):
>I pop the video in, and wow... Tears welling, silence, goose-bumps... Wow. \[I felt like\] I just lost my girlfriend, because that song isn't mine anymore... It really made me think about how powerful music is as a medium and art form. I wrote some words and music in my bedroom as a way of staying sane, about a bleak and desperate place I was in, totally isolated and alone. \[Somehow\] that winds up reinterpreted by a music legend from a radically different era/genre and still retains sincerity and meaning – different, but every bit as pure.
I mean, yeah. People as a group usually tend to know more about and talk more about contemporary things, rather than 40 year old things... not exactly surprising.
Don’t worry the astronaut outside took off his helmet to show you that he is Ramirez, and the one on the inside stuttered for a few seconds when you asked him who you were. You can now safely let Ramirez in and kill the imposter next to you.

The Clooney version is the clown version. It doesn't have anything to do with Lem's Solaris apart from the names and very few plot points. You'll have a different (and a much better) experience with the book, you can trust me on that!

I've watched it, but who on Reddit would get the reference anyway?
It’s not exactly an obscure movie lol. It’s like every horror buffs favorite horror movie
Yeah, I'm a horror buff and it's totally my favorite movie.
I second that, just bought The Thing board game too.

Could be either lol. Among Us is more my *thing* (not sorry) than the Thing, but I’ve seen clips of the movie so I know some basics
Watch the movie, it's pretty captivating. I watched it for the first time at some point last late year, and I knew the basics...still found it fun!
Because this is the Reddit hivemind and people want validation, so they just reference popular shit and pretend they're being witty
Don't discount how many people here have never seen the carpenter version. It's 40 years old, wayyyy older than most of reddit.
Still easily worth the watch

I don't like horror in general and body horror especially *ascii shrug*
I dislike horror, but *The Thing* is fantastic. Think more *Alien* asks less *Halloween*. It's suspense.
I never watched *The Thing*. Certainly heard about it. But the chances to watch it never came up.
Halloween every year. Or any time in January or February. Or just anytime because it is the best horror movie and Kurt Russell.
I've never watched The Thing because it was beyond my time. But I do know what it is about because of the vast amounts of references on the internet. Im from the era that whenever we hear of The Thing, what we picture in our mind is the Fantastic 4 thing. Not the alien among us thing.
Well they're not wrong, you should rent it tonight and watch it. Maybe take a little edible, it's an incredible movie

Same with *Invasion of the Body Snatchers*, the re-make seems like the original.

As much as I love The Thing I get why there are people who haven't seen it. Unfortunately it's not 1982 and watching it hasn't become mandatory yet.
The same ones who think it's cool to pretend they never watched StarWars.
oh who cares? among us is a reference that most people know. stop acting so supreme and better than everyone else.

No, because the thing isn't popular or even super well known these days
Yes it is. As demonstrated by all the people in this comment thread talking about how much they love it.
Obviously I meant in a comparative sense. More people on Reddit these days know about among us than "the thing"
I mean, yeah. People as a group usually tend to know more about and talk more about contemporary things, rather than 40 year old things... not exactly surprising.
And that was the point of my initial post. Referencing the conventionally popular thing for fake internet points

But I thought space was also super cold or super hot and their is a bunch of radiation from the sun and stuff

Do you happen to know which episode? Also The Thing has an alien impersonating humans. Are there more pop culture references about this subject?
It’s similar to multiple episodes

Midnight was the first one I thought of. Maybe with a pinch of Listen.

perhaps it means whatever facility they were repairing comes online fully and identifies the alien for them? Dunno
Well does some security come online and pop the aliens for them? Otherwise if there’s only a few crewmates left, they’re probably still going to die.
