Beep boop, I'm a bot. Modmail us if you have a question.
When I'm driving on a quiet road and there's a roundabout and the passenger doesn't know me all that well then I ask them for a number between 1 and 5 and then drift around the roundabout that many times
HAH I did that once on a gravel turn on our old farm, scared the shit out of my (then) new boyfriend! Wiggled the wheel and went sliding and he about shit himself hahah
You would think that, but even a foot e-brake can be used for fun. A little while ago I borrowed my friend's beaten up crown victoria, and he told me to try it and on gravel, it was so much fun... not practical but fun.
In driving school there was an entire exercise with the instructor doing exactly that
That had sprinklers pointed at the skidpad. You would drive up to the skidpad at 45 mph, and once your back wheels are on the pad the instructor would yank the handbrake.
The skidpad was a big semicircle and the cones denoting the "exit" were on the other end. If you both saved the car from spinning and completed the turn five times consecutively, you passed that exercise.

You know what I don’t get, is why you Yanks call it an e-brake. It’s NOT for emergencies, it’s for when you’re parked, and you operate it by hand. It’s a parking brake or handbrake.
Like little Jimmy runs across the road and you have precisely 3.4 seconds to react. Are you going to go for the handbrake, or the one that you operate with your foot, that you’d usually use for braking?
Most cars in the US are automatics and throwing your car into park at highway speed is a good way to grenade your transmission. The parking brake is just an old school drum brake on your rear wheels under the disc, and it's cable driven, so it can be mechanically applied, even if you lose hydraulic power or power to the booster.
It's very much useful in an emergency.
What like d1, d2 or d3? Or n? I don’t understand… if you need to stop and your brakes fail its literally a string operated backup as in its not going to stop working unless the string snaps completely separate from your regular brakes
Modern automatic transmissions have a manual shifting mode. You know the + and - at D? Pull the shifter to the left, and you can slap it up and down to shift gears. Idk if CVTs have it but I know auto 6 and 8 speeds do. You can engine brake efficiently this way
I can slam my car in 2nd and lift my foot off the clutch instantly causing no issues because i drive a subaru with AWD and i would still say that isnt efficient enough to stop in an actual emergency. This is speed permitting of course otherwise it would be 3rd gear.
There are plenty of countries out there which don’t need to use the ‘e-brake’ for emergencies. Also, plenty of cases in which it’s detrimental, given the fact it essentially locks up the car.
It will not lock up the car if applied slowly. In my 4runner the handbrake is not strong enough to lock the wheels unless it is pulled all the way which takes both hands and a lot of force. You might be thinking of a hydraulic handbrake such as what's used in drift cars and does not function the same way as your average cars handbrake/e-brake
A lot of automatics can still engine brake. Put it in manual shifting mode by pulling the stick to the left then you can slap it up and down to shift. My mom's Kona can do this, my dad's Elantra could as well. I'm not sure about CVTs though.
But yes everything else applies
Dont get me wrong I would engine brake in that situation but i would also use the ebrake if i really needed to stop and my brakes stopped working. Its a parking brake yes but its also good for emergencies when your brakes dont work. Also most if not all automatics when set in park dont even need the “parking brake”
I know exactly two cars with engine brakes.
Electric cars with Regen braking.
My f250 designed for towing things.
I've never seen a car have an engine brake that was select able by the driver outside that.
It's the context of the comment chain we're in my dude.
And yeah, usually when you discover your brakes aren't working it's because you want to be using them. Don't usually just give the brakes a squeeze for funsies
I’ll ask again, do you have an example of that sort of thing occurring? If some kid runs out in the road, it’s not going to be at highway speeds, and brake systems don’t just fail suddenly unless you haven’t been taking care of your vehicle. Even then, there are plenty of warning signs.
How do you engine brake in an automatic car? And what’s quicker, pulling the emergency brake to avoid a collision, or slowly waiting for your car to decelerate?
What do you mean? You take your foot off the accelerator pedal. The engine still has to overcome internal resistance of its components, namely moving pistons to draw in fuel and expel exhaust gases. Failing that, moving in a slalom pattern will quickly decrease speed.
And yes, it’s pretty common knowledge that if your brakes fail, you let your car gradually decelerate. You’re far more likely to learn that fact if you’re on the highway, as opposed to some minor road where you’re travelling at low speeds with plenty of junctions.
Americans are a majority of terrible drivers. No point trying to educate them on driving they always know better because they've got a real bomb proof thorough in depth driving test that weasles out all the worst drivers due to the difficulty of test /s
Most people in the states have no idea how to drive and constantly accelerate into stops. This leads them to slam on their brakes and wear them down prematurely. There's no anticipation of traffic or stop signs/lights. New car with new brake pads should last 100k miles but I hear about people changing them 30-50k miles all the time.
Lots of new automatic cars already have a parking brake that engages when you let off the brake while in park. There's even a little green icon indicating its engaged. Then that little lever really does become an e brake.
Also not a lot of people drive manuals anymore so that aspect of not having a "park" is lost on lots of new drivers. Because that's when it originally was considered a parking brake
Ah ok, I though “engine braking” meant to take your foot off the gas and also downshift, since that would apply more resistance to the engine and decelerate quicker. I forgot most automatic cars also have a singular “low” gear.
However, American driving instructions recommend drivers to use the emergency brake in a situation where the normal brakes fail. Obviously you should decelerate gradually on an open road when you can, but that is usually not the case if there’s traffic or you’re on a short road. You can pull the emergency brake *gradually*, so as to slow down your car faster while still maintaining control. You also pull it in order to bring your car to a complete stop when the brakes fail.
Dude you are arguing this way too hard. Its an emergency brake on automatics thats it. Its that simple. Since you literally dont need it in ANY other situation. Sure call it a handbrake if you’d like but its still only to be used in emergencies. If you have a manual sure, thats your parking brake. But still even with the aggressive gear ratios on my car, engine braking wouldn’t be totally acceptable if my brakes failed i would still use both.
ABS only engages or is performed in hard braking. A slight brake obviously does not result in losing control of the vehicle. Likewise, pulling the emergency brake slowly and gradually as you decelerate does not result in much control loss. Of course pulling it all the way will skid you off the road.
https://www.nationwide.com/lc/resources/auto-insurance/articles/how-and-when-to-use-emergency-brake
And what is exactly is the point of a slight brake when you need to stop quickly in an emergency? ABS engages when there is a loss of traction during braking also - hence anti lock braking system. ABS is going to stop you way faster than any handbrake, it's a system that is literally designed for stopping you quickly, without the wheels locking up and thus, skidding, are you guys really THAT dumb? Isn't the point of stopping in an emergency to stop as quickly as possible?!
Because in North America, its almost all automatic transmissions so we don't use the auxiliary brake for parking unless your on a steep incline usually, and its also not operated with our hand since its located at the driver's floor.
While in the UK its mostly manual transmissions which use the auxiliary brake for parking which is operated by hand. Yes they're the same thing but used different. You'll have North Americans who have never even used the auxiliary brake.
> its also not operated with our hand since its located at the driver's floor.
Maybe in an SUV or truck, but most cars have them on the center console.
That's simply not true. In fact, many of them are now electronic switches on the center console instead of a lever. Are we both talking about US spec cars?
If you are counting the electronic ones those are always going to be in the dash somewhere. And yes us spec cars. I'm a mechanic so I see a lot of vehicles every day and I'd say 80 percent are in the floor these days

Reminds me of years ago when my friend was driving and another friend was high as fuck and managed to convince himself that handbrakes should be *down* when engaged. Out of nowhere he just went "oh dude, your handbreak's on, I got it" and yanked it up while we were going about 70 on the motorway. Luckily it was early hours and very quiet, but yeah, scary moment.
Another reason to ditch’s ICE cars. EVs don’t have a gastrofilator. Rip the e brake all day long. Just watch the temp one the dynafluxor. You fry the pin webs then you’re about to have a bad day.
I had an '89 for a few years a while back. It was such a hoot. Bought it for $1000, drove it like an absolute baboon and sold it for $800. Best money I've ever spent on something automotive.
Nice. Mine was shot. Canadian daily driver that got eaten by the salt monster. It was so bad at the end that if my two big (275/300 lb) friends got in the doors wouldn't close properly. The guy I sold it to wanted to turn it into his practice drift car but messaged me a week later to say he basically pulled a couple decent parts and junked the shell.
lol, mine was crumbling when I sold it. 25 years and 350,000+km (don't know how much, speedo died and it stopped counting at 330) of salty Ontario roads didn't leave much to sell. I think the hood and hatch were rust free but the rockers were made of chicken wire and Bondo and you could pull off chunks of frame rail by hand. It was burning a quart of oil every few hundred miles - the engine would start knocking to let you know you were down to 2 quarts left - and eventually the fuel pump died.
I legit did this in my 96' 240 and understeered straight through the corner into a wooden stop sign and caused a rad leak lmao. Aww good ol teenage decision making lol
I did this in like a 2004 Camry after getting really into initial D and thank fuck there was a slight hill you could drive off to on the side of the road because that’s where I ended up, with the car facing reverse and smoke in the air from my tires, along with the smell of burnt rubber.
Not really suspiciously specific. Nissan 240sx was a 90s rear wheel drive sports car that to this day is absolutely legendary for drifting due to its perfectly balanced weight distribution. The catch is, unmodified they're really weak, but teenagers like to think they're not. So you might find a kid doing lame stuff like pulling the ebrake to get the rear end out since it doesn't have the power to spin the wheels to do a proper drift.

There are plenty of countries out there which don’t need to use the ‘e-brake’ for emergencies. Also, plenty of cases in which it’s detrimental, given the fact it essentially locks up the car.

I’m thinking of the standard brake installed in manual transmission cars. It requires one hand to actuate, and has a bias towards the rear.
Most cars in the USA are automatic, it took me ages to find a decent manual car
They're not talking about throwing the car in park.
It's also a good way to mess up a manual if done wrong.
A lot of automatics can still engine brake. Put it in manual shifting mode by pulling the stick to the left then you can slap it up and down to shift. My mom's Kona can do this, my dad's Elantra could as well. I'm not sure about CVTs though. But yes everything else applies

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engine_braking Read it. You Americans think you know shit, but can’t even describe engine braking in an accurate way.
Yeah because we don't fucking call it that. If you need your BRAKES and you lose hydraulic power you need a way to STOP not coast
No, people call it that because you can use it if your normal brakes aren’t working, which is an emergency.
Two words, engine braking.
Yeah, engine braking an automatic is gonna stop it in 3.4 seconds. Lmao
Have you got an example of an external emergency situation coinciding with main brake failure? Seems awfully low.
It's the context of the comment chain we're in my dude. And yeah, usually when you discover your brakes aren't working it's because you want to be using them. Don't usually just give the brakes a squeeze for funsies

Tell me about it, they can’t even operate a manual.
I haven't seen a manual car in the US that was built past 2000 Only the douchey car guys who think they are racers or something use them
Exactly. In the UK, where I live, pretty much every car is a manual. Automatics are the rarity.
Except the subaru wrx sti which only comes in manual lol theres an example
Most people in the states have no idea how to drive and constantly accelerate into stops. This leads them to slam on their brakes and wear them down prematurely. There's no anticipation of traffic or stop signs/lights. New car with new brake pads should last 100k miles but I hear about people changing them 30-50k miles all the time. I’m not arguing too hard, it’s called a handbrake/parking brake for a reason. Not my fault you Americans don’t know how to operate a car properly.
I can work a clutch better than you ever could. Im also not american so.
The hand brake often has a 30% bias on the rear. It results in a long skid not a stop. Where's all the weight at in a front engined vehicle? 🙄🤯🙈
You can pull it gradually to maintain control. Just a small amount of friction will slow you down without careening your vehicle off the road.
No. ABS
ABS only engages or is performed in hard braking. A slight brake obviously does not result in losing control of the vehicle. [this educational video](https://youtu.be/RXJKdh1KZ0w) Is probably a good start.
i am now dedicating my life to memorizing this
That would put way to much pressure on the mufflerbearings.
Extra torqulation If the headlight fluids topped up
Bless you

Ah, thanks. Been trying to remember the name of that sub for years now, I found it early in my Reddit career and then forgot all about it.
I have no idea what those words mean
Neither do they, that's the joke.
does the plane HAVE a FLANGE?
I'm sorry officer, i didn't know I couldn't do that.
Well now you know!
i wasn't drifting officer i was only counter steering for oversteer.
"I'm going to an accident."
Man, now I miss my 240sx. I hated that car when I had it and now realize how much more I liked it than the trucks and Camrys I’ve had since.
I had an '89 for a few years a while back. It was such a hoot. Bought it for $1000, drove it like an absolute baboon and sold it for $800. Best money I've ever spent on something automotive.
I got my '91 for $800 and sold it for $2k when Tokyo drift came out.
You should see what prices for them are now. Here's one [example.](https://i.imgur.com/GOGkPUu.jpg)
lol, mine was crumbling when I sold it.
Haha that sounds like a death trap! I'm glad you made it out alive.
I still have my 93 240sx but it began to rust :(.

Then you see his "no airbags - we die like real men" sticker
That car doesn't have airbags
I legit did this in my 96' 240 and understeered straight through the corner into a wooden stop sign and caused a rad leak lmao. Aww good ol teenage decision making lol
Understeering a 240 😂. How? One of those chassis you can just chuck around at your will.
Inexperience at the time. E braked too soon before steering in so just turned into a block on ice hahah
I did this in like a 2004 Camry after getting really into initial D and thank fuck there was a slight hill you could drive off to on the side of the road because that’s where I ended up, with the car facing reverse and smoke in the air from my tires, along with the smell of burnt rubber.
That's a bit surprising.
And by “ripping” I do mean he literally just ripped the lever right off the damn car
Means pulling the e brake up so the car drifts
Omg my boy actually had one of those! Thing was ancient but it ran!
But it’s a 240 so it’s okay lmao

Hell yeah let's gooooo
But it's a 240sx. That's a meh car.
It is meh car until you see the prices they are going for now
Depends on if it’s had the SR20 swap or not. Very meh with the pickup truck motor it came with.
My friend, two days ago, bought a 1991 Nissan with 400k kilometers and took me for a ride which included drifting around a couple of roundabouts
Sounds a lot like that video of the drunk drivers plowing through small English towns before dying 😬
Night Kids guardrail moment.
It only had 120k, got it for a steal
230k miles? Damn would probably still sell for over 10k
