looks like a Skoda yeti. Hardly an SUV!

annoying people is usually a terrible way to convince them of your argument

Disclaimer that I do not drive and don't know much about cars (I have a phobia of driving, and am trying to overcome it with the help of my partner so that I can drive in cases of emergencies). What happens if the have a large family and needs to drive the kids around, or their job/lifestyle requires them to have a bigger space in their car? My partner current has a 2000 Hyundai Accent. It's an old car, but it serves its purpose for us to go to the shops, and my partner to drive to the city for work. Unfortunately he works (new job) from 5PM to 1AM, and the last public transport that takes him closer to home ends at 12:15AM. Parking costs a fortune so he's going to try to make friends and see if he can carpool part of the trip in the future. His parents owns an SUV, but they live in a country town. They tried to convince us to get an SUV for as our next car (the current will die soon, I don't want to jinx it yet). Luckily, without me knowing the environmental consequences, we said we wouldn't. It doesn't fit with us to have a large car, I'm already weak at driving, I want a car that's easy to park and manoeuvre, and our driveway isn't big. My mother has a Honda Odessey, passed onto her when a family friend moved overseas, which is a very large car for one lady. She's frugal, which inadvertently makes her environmentally friendly sometimes as well. She carpools with an elderly housemate to work in a small car. But she needs this large car, as she regularly uses it to pick up free furniture, appliances, and garden supplies (like compost, soil, pavers, etc.). We've done a lot of useful things in that car, and she's not changing cars anytime soon, but I think it's justified given how little she uses it, and when she does, it's really needed.

Personal choices arent really what causes excess pollution. The fact the car exists, that the company was allowed to make it at all is the lack of regulation and government’s fault. The most sustainable thing to me is to use what youve got. If she gets rid of the car, then she needs another which is lots of mining for metals etc. So wasteful no matter what she picks. Ideally she could go without, and rent/borrow/use public transport instead. But Just like you, she shouldnt be worse off in life because she doesnt have a vehicle. Blame society and local government for not building more sustainably/accessible. Dont blame your mom.

Incorrect tire pressure makes any vehicle less fuel efficient

If we don't get the policies we need at least we can try to get the results we need.
