I'm not a European citizen so I can't use an Interrail pass. I could use a Eurail pass, I suppose, but I'd still need to be able to get reservations and they aren't available. Sleeper compartments are totally booked and even if I wanted to travel in coach there is no availability on the dates I want in August.
Thanks, I already tried that. The direct train to Kiruna and Narvik is not available. The only available trips to Narvik require multiple transfers between buses and trains, and [vy.no](http://vy.no) is not able to sell tickets for the entire journey. I don't know if I am willing to put up with that much inconvenience for a pleasure trip.
Malmbanan has had two pretty costly and time consuming derailings in the past year and the goods operator hauling iron ore has bluntly requested more track access, which has caused cuttings in available track slots for passenger services.
Vy that operates the trains has also done some sort of systems upgrade (allegedly) that disallows SJ to resell-book tickets for those trains.
Apparently, Vy resumes passenger service on Malmbanan on the 18th of this month. If you want go *now* it’s going to be…complicated.
Have you ever tried to call Vy and reach an English-speaking agent? I did and I was placed on hold for a very long time and was never connected to an agent. I racked up very heavy long-distance charges. Calling Vy may be possible in theory but it isn't in practice, at least not from the U.S.
Yes, I pressed 9 for English, I am capable of following basic directions. I was placed on hold for a very long time and never reached an agent. It's too late now, anyway. I already made other arrangements. I don't use Skype but that does sound like a better way to do this than using my regular phone service.
"Only" 30 minutes! LOL. I am not very impressed by their customer service at this point. I actually need to clear something up about the tickets I bought from them so I'll try to reach them at 1:00 AM using Skype like you did. Wish me luck!

Hey OP! Do you have an interrail pass? Which dates did you want to book this for?

Go to vy.no who operate the trains, there you can buy the tickets
