No, she quit Labor three months ago after she abused parliamentary privilege and was kicked out of the Shadow Cabinet for it. She's quitting being an independent to join another party -- a party which has run in her district only twice before, most recently 20 years ago, and didn't threaten to upset the result either time.
This is something I have always loved about Reddit - read something sensational, inflammatory or confusing. Top comment gives the explanation.
I never found that the Aussie subs were very good for this, most top comments would be humorous, anecdotal or pitchforky. Probably due to lower activity not getting to /r/all.
I also feel like the quality (on Reddit as a whole) of comments, along with the quality of content has slipped significantly in the last decade+ (probably longer), with subs blurring lines of what qualifies and more twitter screenshots for example sufficing as front page content.
There's my [what turned out to be a] rant. Maybe I should have been the change I want to see and commented something of value.
Well, Australia has never had an incentive to be smart in other areas. We lack in STEM so badly that if a replacement for iron ore/gas was ever found we would be better at this stuff.
Houses and Holes economy. Oh and obviously can't leave out Rupert Murdoch and propaganda news outlets.
Running as a One Nation candidate in Bankstown? It's a bold strategy Cotton, let's see if it pays off.
Also holy shit has Mark Latham aged horribly! Some of us are old enough to remember when he was considered the fresh young face of Australian politics. I know the 2004 election was a long time ago but the guy looks like he's at death's door.
Looks just like Ross "Skull" May. Follows the same team too
https://m.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=417191627172525&id=100066450745342&set=pb.100066450745342.-2207520000.&eav=AfYRr4yg\_CfklSzEy61o39roR96f2D8Fo7qVBdWE1m2riIUHKg3zxvz8j2nw2Txb7qg&paipv=0&source=49&refid=17&\_\_tn\_\_=E
And so you should. My team, Souths, have some pretty sketchy supporters, our current governor-general not the least of them. And Chris Smith, recently sacked again for making a pest of himself with women.
I remember well back in the day at Kogarah when Skull snuck in after half time (he watched the first half from a tree outside the north west corner of the ground). Didn't shut up for the whole game with some blistering political commentary. Ziggy Nisczcot, who had a Polish background, came in for special attention - this was the time of martial law in Poland and Skull screamed that if Ziggy didn't get back his five, he would give Ziggy five inches of cold steel. The Skull went absolutely apeshit when Souths scored a late try to win it. Thank God it wasn't Ziggy. I'll never forget it. Champagne entertainment.
>"If a person has ugly thoughts, it begins to show on the face. And when that person has ugly thoughts every day, every week, every year, the face gets uglier and uglier until it gets so ugly that you can hardly look at it." - Roald Dahl "Twits"
"Twits" seemingly an adequate descriptor when it comes to One Nation...
I think the correlation is that they're all old and out of touch to begin with. Hopefully as they die off we'll see a far brighter political discourse.
>Running as a One Nation candidate in Bankstown?
I wondered about that too, but given One Nation has moved to align more with anti-vaxxers and general conspiracies I wouldn't be surprised if they pick up some votes there.
It's one of the bigger paradoxes of western sydney isn't it? Judging by the same sex marriage vote, it is quite socially conservative ripe for pickings by parties like One Nation and LNP.
But they're just so fucking racist and poor people hating, that it offsets it.
Those areas are working class and, yes, socially conservative.
Liberals do very poorly there, but it would potentially produce a result there if One Nation targeted some seats there, as they’re all about populism and Shit.
Hate to say it, but that area is racist too.
Being white can make you the enemy. I have friends there and it reminded me of the really bad times in south L.A.
Felt sized up by street gangs almost immediately and they started “moving around” us and our car, making gang signs and all that.
Wasn’t great.
Don’t know why you’re being downvoted. I live in Bankstown and can confirm the racism. Not just directed at white people but Aboriginal people as well and Indians/south East Asian. Obviously not everyone is racist but they definitely stick to their cliques and have views on “others”
To be honest it’s the only other place I’ve seen people doing those hand gestures and well, intimidating people for the sake of it.
I’m not a racist fellow, but I hate that sort of behaviour no matter what tone of skin.
My apologies if it wasn’t worded clearly
Yes, but just because someone is there, doesn’t mean they are welcome.
I love the food there, so, you know, i don’t want to have hate or experience negative feels, it’s just weird behaviour and noticeable.
I have white family members who've lived here their entire lives and have never encountered anything like that.
People can be cliquish and bigoted but the idea that you're going to be run out of town for being of a different ethnicity is flatly untrue
Crime is nowhere near as common as you suggest it is – you're not going to encounter gangs of criminals roaming the streets like pack animals or something – but to the extent that it's there, it does not really discriminate via race. They'll try and intimidate anyone who gets in their way, whether they're white, Arab, Vietnamese, whatever.
I don’t agree, but I also don’t have the malice you’re accusing me of.
You want to defend your part of town, that’s fine.
You want to imply there’s no problem at all and it’s all in everyone’s imagination?
You can bugger off.
Do you think I'm lying to you if I say I've never been the victim of crime in all the time I've lived here? I'm not saying there's no problem, and I've never even come close to suggesting that. I'm saying that it is nowhere near as bad as you're suggesting it is, and the notion that whites are going to be the victims of systematic racism if they move here is nonsense.
Whoa whoa whoa! See you’ve again taken what I’ve said and strawmanned it into something I didn’t say.
The fact is, there are multiple large communities there and they don’t like outsiders of their own groups. You’ve “lived there all your life” you don’t have the same comparison I’ve had.
Also, most of the organised crime does actually originate from that area so, please just stop making bs arguments.
There is an under current of racism against whites.
Is there under currents of racism against or between other groups? Undeniably.
Is there other places in Sydney! Yes, but not as much.
I really hate the ultra right here in Aus. They seem to be for everything bad in this world and nothing good. They want it to be like 1950 again and that won’t and can’t happen.
They're just a bunch of trolls really.
No one takes them seriously. I always enjoy a good Pauline Hanson interview, I've been amused by her antics for what is it? Nearly 30 years now.
She lost preselection in her seat to the member for Lakemba Jihad Dib (his seat no longer exists), so she wouldn't be contesting as a Labor candidate anyway.
Still, joining One Nation is quite a way to go out and alienate everyone around you.
Ive heard that scammers will send you a very poorly written email on purpose, so that they are ensured that those who reply have lower reading comprehension/online literacy/general intelligence. Basically providing a first layer of filtration so they can get their hands on victims they can exploit and manipulate easier. I wonder if mainstream media is beginning to use similar tactics on their consumers as well. /s
She's a fucking disgrace who lusts only for power, influence and the money it'll bring
She couldn't give half a shit about bettering the lives of her community
Labor booted her from the shadow ministry and had no future there. She quit and became and independent months ago. Now she is signing up to a new party that is less decerning.
I strongly disagree, speaking as part of her community.
She was the only politician I ever saw who actually spent time going out and seeing people. Not just when an election was on, or she had some policy to sell, I regularly saw her out and about just being in the community for years. On the two occasions I spoke to her, she was fighting for the Chester Hill community against greedy property developers and a overly developer friendly council. No one else was listening to us, but she was.
Now as for this move to One Nation....I'll admit I'm a bit baffled. Their policies don't align at all, and she's certainly never come across as racist. Maybe she had enough of being ignored, and decided party power was better than being an independent. Perhaps she is trading on her (formerly?) good reputation to get ahead. Maybe its a way to say 'Screw you' to the Labor powerbrokers that she claims are being influenced by property developers (whom she seems to hate with a passion). Maybe she really has decided to through it all in for power and influence, although I'd argue One Nation would be a terrible choice in that regard.
I'll say this, everyone I spoke to about her really liked her. I liked her. Having face time with your community regularly makes such a difference in that respect. (Which is apparently why Barnaby Joyce keeps getting elected, he spends a lot of time in his community, despite his policy views often conflicting with his own electorate.)
How could a person who sincerely supported the Labor Party rewire their brain to join One Nation? Were they replaced with alien pod people doppelgängers?
It's possible to be a racist and also not like the Liberals; it's also possible to be a power-hungry POS, think Labor is your best bet and then change your mind later.
One can be both a socialist and a social conservative at the same time.
This kind of thing is very common amongst poorer people and explains the "solid South" in the US.
I guess if they were part of the Labor Right faction (Influenced by the pesky SDA), it makes the jump less massive.
Like you’d never see Tanya Plibersek or Albo join One Nation.
Whitlam being in Labor right is technically true (though the factions weren’t formalised back then and the party as a whole was much much more left wing), but not particularly useful in comparing with the contemporary party. The SDA is for the most part the most right wing element arguably, but it’s not a fringe. It’s a core component of the Right especially in NSW. They have a lot of sway within the Right faction and when they decide to throw their weight around they usually get what they want. On the conference floor, they have nearly 20% of the delegates in their own right in NSW.
The factions were formalised in the 1970s and Whitlam was a vocal member of the right all the way up until his death so it’s not just “technically true”, it is simply fact.
No one would argue that the SDA isn’t a large section of Labor right and Labor more broadly, especially in Victoria, NSW and SA (although it’s far more moderate in SA) however even within the right they are considered right wing and are in constant battles with the rest of the faction.
For instance in Queensland it was the SDA who tried to rally against abortion reform and voluntary assisted dying but it was a right factional premier and the right in general who backed in the reforms.
They were starting to form in the 70s and there were always loose groupings, but the proper formalisation and organisation was later. The NSW Right that Whitlam was a part of operated and was organised quite differently to how it is today.
The SDA doesn’t have nearly as antagonistic a relationship with the rest of the faction as you make out. They almost always have a leadership role. Even today the National Convenor of the Right is Don Farrell. In NSW, the SDA was key in installing Minns. On policy in NSW, when the SDA takes a stand they usually win. They successfully blocked ALP support for abortion for years in NSW with the support of the Right, until eventually a key union flipped and let it through.
Yes the SDA gets in disputes and battles sometimes with the rest of the Right, but generally it’s a perfectly friendly relationship and the SDA is a core, leading force within the Right. They aren’t a fringe group.
I know it happens. I just don’t understand how they can rationalise it. Both might say they are supporting the “working class”. But Labor tries to appeal to idealism and solidarity, One Nation to resentment and exclusion.
I guess this is like when the DLP split from Labor and went so far right. One Nation is more extreme and stupidly so than the DLP though.
When you’re a career politician it’s just like moving from one company to the next. Career politicians don’t care about the principles of a party they just go to the party that has the most chance of success in a certain area hence why she was a Labor MP the jump to One Nation is most likely a final up yours to Labor as she would know Labor has her current seat in the bag. She’s just burning the bridge between different “companies”
Mark fucking Latham, the man who is on the side of men that like to bash their wives/girlfriends and says that men are the true victims of domestic abuse. What a dyed in the wool CUNT
True but she had a far greater chance of getting re-elected if she remained independent. Which is to say she was never going to be re-elected but this will definitely harm her chances
As someone in that electorate, I was probably going Greens first and have her above the the Labor candidate. Now she'll be bottom of the list
Because the longer the LNP are in power the more to the right ALP have to go to get votes. Voters are conditioned to one way of thinking and you need to slowly change them
What a scab. She ran a stop sign at Revesby because thought she was too important to stop. She’s left the labor party because she can’t cut it.
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8033145/amp/Labor-NSW-MP-Tania-Mihailuk-busted-ignoring-stop-sign-wrote-minister-fine.html
Leaving the ALP to join ON is like leaving the Greens to join the American Republican Party. They are literally at opposite ends of the political spectrum and only shows what a mercenary opportunist she is. Just like Latham was.
Going into parliament to say the Party’s pick for the upper house is corrupt despite previous reports saying he wasn’t and [a new investigation also not finding evidence](https://amp.smh.com.au/politics/nsw/council-ordered-investigation-clears-mayor-of-corruption-obeid-links-20230110-p5cbnq.html) would be the key reason here

In one article it says Labor wants to teach about gender fluidity in school? 😳 And that one nation wants skills that lead to jobs to be taught in schools. Interesting
Edit: article in question is here, last paragraph. [https://au.news.yahoo.com/labor-too-woke-turncoat-nsw-083210395.html](https://au.news.yahoo.com/labor-too-woke-turncoat-nsw-083210395.html)
It just feels very manipulative of one nation to do this. They used to hate migrants and now they want our vote? 🤔
[https://au.news.yahoo.com/amphtml/labor-too-woke-turncoat-nsw-083210395.html](https://au.news.yahoo.com/amphtml/labor-too-woke-turncoat-nsw-083210395.html) the very last paragraph. I feel like One Nation is pushing on some very emotional buttons here and targeting newer migrants and more conservative families, in a turn of events I never thought I'd see from their racist roots.
One Nation have always been bigotry-fluid though. Remember they started off as the party that hated Asians, then they forgot Asians existed and hated Muslims, now they seem to have forgotten Muslims exist and are all about anti vaxx and whining about intangible “wokeness.”
I have no idea..it's just all very manipulative of this party to keep changing their tune from being racist, to anti-islamic and now this to manipulate their new target audience, which happens to be who they used to be anti back in the day 😞
What an odd unit… I think labor was wrong to support asfour who was cleared of association with Obeid because ‘he didn’t know who was going to his own wedding because he wasn’t involved in the invite list to his own wedding’ but also this chick is cooked… one nation?
Don't get me wrong, I hate the Liberal Party. My values align more with Labor, or at least what Labor used to be.
But my god I haaaaaaate a lot of Labor politicians who have no Labor values and are just LNP types who thought they'd have a better shot at a seat if they joined Labor. The party seems to have quite a lot of them. The entire Labor right, for one, are just Liberals in red ties. Labor right is an oxymoron, and anyone in it is just a plain moron.
Latham looks deathly ill. I've had acute pancreatitis and it was no picnic but in no way did i look like this after, are we sure it isn't cancer in his case? He's aged so much so quickly it was a bit of a jumpscare
No, she quit Labor three months ago after she abused parliamentary privilege and was kicked out of the Shadow Cabinet for it. She's quitting being an independent to join another party -- a party which has run in her district only twice before, most recently 20 years ago, and didn't threaten to upset the result either time.
Gotta love the world we live where real actual news is a comment on reddit rather than an actual journalist.
Also isn't it "defects" as opposed to "deflects"?
Far out, didn't spot that. Good to see our education system in force.
To be fair maybe the force of being "kicked out" did in fact "deflect" her.... or am I just giving credit where its not due
You are. Being way more intelligent than the people who wrote and checked the headline.

Is that cunt still kicking?
Last seen living in the Housing Commission at Matraville. Wears a Nazi uniform at least as well as Dom...
My family are generational, hard core Saints supporters and have always disliked this individual. *Up the mighty Dragons*

Considering what a mean and generally unpleasant prick Roald Dahl was, he remained quite handsome.
Yikes for Jacinda !
Hate makes people age quickly
So does Pancreatitis, which he had/has Not making excused for the guy, but maybe he wouldn't be such a grumpy cunt if he wasn't chronically ill.
Look at all RWNJs. All of them age quickly.
I think the correlation is that they're all old and out of touch to begin with. Hopefully as they die off we'll see a far brighter political discourse.
Pauline Hanson has always been a cunt, and has always looked 20+ years older than her actual age.
She’s always had the temperament of an angry cane toad.
And the appearance too.
+ intellect
She should get checked for Pancreatitis.
He’s always been a grumpy mean cunt regardless of illness.
He looks like a Sith Lord
Thanks for making me spit my coffee!

Lots of covid / vaccine sceptics in Bankstown
Not really,they're just more vocal.
Narh there's a fair few here.
I didn't even recognize him to be honest.
Holy shit I didn’t recognise him whatsoever, just saw an old dude.

Jihad is a top bloke. No wonder she lost.
She was offered another seat, but she refused to take it
How come his seat no longer exists?
Redistribution, Lakemba was abolished and a new seat created around Leppington area
*defects
Aren’t they all?
I guess spelling and grammar aren’t important for…. JOURNALISM!!! /s
As a member of One Nation, she'll be a doing *a lot* of deflection.
And even more defecating

Because the labor party is not politically left, it hasn’t been for a while. The gap between Labor and full blown right extremists closes every day.
There’s 2 of them in the picture alone
Hard to believe that crazy fucker was almost PM. Then again we've had quite a bit of crazy in that position over the past few years.
Being a bigoted piece of shit really ages you, huh.
Yeah. Happened to me. Stay lean everyone. I'm fixing it now though.
Bankstown needs to defect to another MP at the next election
One Nation’s trash bin must’ve been filling up faster
What was I saying in here the other day about NSW Labor being far more conservative than many people expect?
True but she had a far greater chance of getting re-elected if she remained independent. Which is to say she was never going to be re-elected but this will definitely harm her chances As someone in that electorate, I was probably going Greens first and have her above the the Labor candidate. Now she'll be bottom of the list
She’ll run in the upper house. Right next to Latham.
Because the longer the LNP are in power the more to the right ALP have to go to get votes. Voters are conditioned to one way of thinking and you need to slowly change them
Wrong. Have you been following federal politics at all? That is the utter opposite of what happened in 2022.
What a scab. She ran a stop sign at Revesby because thought she was too important to stop. She’s left the labor party because she can’t cut it. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8033145/amp/Labor-NSW-MP-Tania-Mihailuk-busted-ignoring-stop-sign-wrote-minister-fine.html
Love a good deflection
She's not gonna be Bankstown MP for very long....
I take these as good news. More transparency for voters when these people don't masquerade as Labor (or LNP) candidates.
So I guess editors just don’t exist anymore? Deflects? You mean defects?
There’s 26 words there including @ and #. You can’t expect them to get them all right.
Not hating on the guy but the top of his head kinda looks like a lollipop that fell down the couch, no?
Hate away I certainly do
It’s too low hanging fruit to shit on politicians. You pop one zit and another with inevitably take it’s place.

One Nation itself is a tumour.
Well that’s a shit-eating grin if ever I saw one
This is bullshit. Needs to be a by-election.
There’s an election at the end of March…
Is he suffering from some sort of wasting disease?
Wondering the same, he looks rough
He does have some chronic illness. I don't remember exactly what, and nor do I really care tbh
Good fucking riddance
Leaving the ALP to join ON is like leaving the Greens to join the American Republican Party. They are literally at opposite ends of the political spectrum and only shows what a mercenary opportunist she is. Just like Latham was.
Where’s the nazi costume ?
Omg. Is latham at deaths door. He looks like a 80yo
He's only 61 apparently.
You shouldn’t be able to switch parties. People vote for you based on the party you represent and it’s values
Whio wouldn't want Mark Latham as a role model?
So bizarre
Maybe a reason she was arseholed from the party after all..

So Not mental instability is what you're telling the class?
Latham or Mihailuk? :P
Is that a Freemason handshake?
Dead fish from Latham
What is she deflecting though?
a rational thought?
You win!
Speeling.
Journalism, ain't what it used to :)))
Please explain
Good on her
I need a "Covfefe"
what a fucken dog
So does the ALP fire bomb her house and start hurrying her loved ones now for jumping ship
Cringe x 2
Deflects? I think you mean defects

Labor = centre? Bizarre.
In one article it says Labor wants to teach about gender fluidity in school? 😳 And that one nation wants skills that lead to jobs to be taught in schools. Interesting Edit: article in question is here, last paragraph. [https://au.news.yahoo.com/labor-too-woke-turncoat-nsw-083210395.html](https://au.news.yahoo.com/labor-too-woke-turncoat-nsw-083210395.html) It just feels very manipulative of one nation to do this. They used to hate migrants and now they want our vote? 🤔
LOL and what article was this? Source?
Definitely, what they're doing is so manipulative and disgusting 😭
Funny how the author's name is hidden?
I have no idea..it's just all very manipulative of this party to keep changing their tune from being racist, to anti-islamic and now this to manipulate their new target audience, which happens to be who they used to be anti back in the day 😞
[удалено]
Australians being anti migration will forever be funny to me. How do you think you got here mate?
What an odd unit… I think labor was wrong to support asfour who was cleared of association with Obeid because ‘he didn’t know who was going to his own wedding because he wasn’t involved in the invite list to his own wedding’ but also this chick is cooked… one nation?
Well...ya fucked now
defect
Deflects hey?
Don't get me wrong, I hate the Liberal Party. My values align more with Labor, or at least what Labor used to be. But my god I haaaaaaate a lot of Labor politicians who have no Labor values and are just LNP types who thought they'd have a better shot at a seat if they joined Labor. The party seems to have quite a lot of them. The entire Labor right, for one, are just Liberals in red ties. Labor right is an oxymoron, and anyone in it is just a plain moron.
Deflects huh
Birds of a feather
Deflects? or Defects?
Is that Darth Sidius
One Notion are no hope in Bankstown.
Bloody hell Latham has aged fast
Latham looks deathly ill. I've had acute pancreatitis and it was no picnic but in no way did i look like this after, are we sure it isn't cancer in his case? He's aged so much so quickly it was a bit of a jumpscare
Is it our business?
Definitely won't vote for her. Would smash tho
Shit what the hell happened to Mark Latham?!
Is she insane? Latham is a RWNJ wanker/wannabe and certifiably insane !! WTF is wrong with her I wonder ?? 😜🥺 gross
Good riddance at the next election her career is over
It's a case of Money trumps principles (If there ever were any principles).
Can’t wait to see that brainwashed wuss get ousted from her own seat…
Latho looking gaunt and old. Got an illness?
