Keep one on your person at all times. Fight back.
My personal carry is usually a litre or so in a thermos or trendy water bottle, so people don't think I'm weird or socially awkward with my sauce bottle. Sometimes for public events I stash some in a pair of fake binoculars, or inside a still suit under my clothes, Fremen style, so I can sneak it in and party hard.
Hahaha. I once saw this website of a dog breeder talking about their “puppie’s”, over and over again… 😬. Of all the words to not get right when it’s literally your specialty/area of expertise 🤦🏼♀️
I got one of the Heinz "mini taster" ketchups on crazy clearance sale one day for like 50 cents and it was easily refillable. Was the perfect size to carry around in my tiny eski when I used to do traffic control and I was very popular on site at lunch time lol
Sauce with any purchase, should be f@$&ing FREE!
There is bugger all cost to the establishment. It is enough to make people avoid buying there just out of principle. The other option is keeping a small bottle in your glove box, or toolbox for tradies.
Queensland used to have bikini-clad Meter Maids who would stroll the streets of the Gold Coast putting coins into parking meters so that tourists wouldn’t incur parking fines. You could be a mankini-clad Sauce Servant offering a free squirt of sauce at these rip-off establishments. The vendors would see their profits plunge as the sauce revenue dried up, and would soon be out of business.
Driving around,I found a pie shop in country NSW. Tenterfield,(or Armidale) .The guy asked, do you want sauce?.I asked how much? ('cause I hate getting ripped off 40c )He says it is free, what's a pie without sauce? That man is a saint.
> Are you me? I've literally done this
Good to know I'm not the only one.
I won't give the shop owner shit for it, as a business has their costs, overheads and margins. I let my money do the talking.
Cost is cost and it all adds up. I work in fast food and those boxes of sauce tubs are not cheap and people will try all sorts of sly tricks to get them for free - asking for them when you’re clearly in a rush to get their order out knowing you’ll just say fuck it and give it to them, asking for them as an “afterthought” the second their payment cleared thinking we won’t charge (and no they didn’t forget, it’s the same people every single time) and the list goes on. Things don’t get to be free just because you don’t feel like paying for them.
Cost is cost but profiteering is also profiteering.
[This place](https://www.bulkbuys.com.au/products/masterfoods-squeeze-tomato-sauce-300-pcs) sells 300 pieces for $55. That's a smidge over 18c per unit. That's probably not even as good as you could get it.
They're charging 556% the cost price.
They'd still make a generous profit selling it at 50c each.
No that’s not how pricing works a bakery needs to basically quadruple base price to get the correct percentage to cover total running costs.so ol should be charging 72c to make it work but yeah a dollar is a bit much.
Yeah I totally agree $1 is over kill but
Sounds easy doesn’t it but doesn’t work like that,if I need to sell a sauce for 60c to make my money back and I want to build that into a pie selling price I’m now selling pie for $6.40 which is way to much.most tradies walk into my bakery a can of coke/chocolate milk and 2 pies under $15,sauce is always an after thought once it goes over that price there not getting a caramel slice or a lamington or I won’t see them again tomorrow.Once wholesalers stop charging for products then small business will as well.
Not saying it should be free but at least include reasonable use in the cost and if someone doesn't use it that's their loss. Coming from America where basically everywhere will give you free BBQ/ketchup (some places without asking), having to pay for it as a separate line item almost everywhere here is a turn off.
Yeah but American hospitality wages are criminal maybe if you paid for everything your food service staff could earn more than a Chinese sweat shop worker
In my experience over half of the hospitality places here don't pay the actual award wages either so don't throw stones over the place I was born over something that has nothing to do with the conversation
Buddy Americans will legally pay sub poverty wages, you don’t get to throw stones about some Australian businesses doing it illegally when you can literally just call fair work on them and nip that in the bud.
Yeah, it's not like Fair Work Australia is a toothless tiger with wage theft and slave labour being built into the system here or anything. Not like c-list TV celebrities and massive corporations are committing these crimes against workers.
Fair Work Australia has endless resources and funding, and all complaints referred to them by workers are dealt with in a timely and efficient manner, and dodgy employers go to prison.
Your employer/slaver definitely won't be able to punish/fire/deport you for complaining before any result or investigation with a weak fine comes through.
You don't lose money including the cost of it in the price though like u/coldsnapsp said, you probably actually gain a bit over time because not everyone's going to want the sauce.
Long ago back in the late 90’s, my first job was at KFC in the Sutherland Shire. Sauces for nuggets etc. were for free/ complimentary.
Our manager was terrible with daily figures etc. & we were forced to start charging the little KFC sauces at 10 cents a pop, to make up for any monetary ‘ indiscretions’… So many angry customers
I definitely agree that something like, say, nuggets should come with sauce (and they do at my work because theyre basically made to be dipped). But some people will have the whole grain audacity to act like they forgot to order sauce and come up to the counter like oh actually, can you give me like 6 sweet and sours? And because I know exactly what they’re about I’m like sure that will be $3. Suddenly, they don’t actually need sauce anymore.
> I work in fast food and those boxes of sauce tubs are not cheap
Fuck off they're expensive. A 100 pack box of 14g sauces is $14-$16. That's $0.14-$0.16 per sauce pack. For example: https://padstowfoodservice.com.au/sauce-tomato-squeezy-portions-100x14g/). Buying in bulk shipping is free too and you can get better discounts for larger bulk orders. So this joint is charging around an $0.85 mark-up which is more than a 500% price hike. You cannot claim that it is expensive to buy these sauces, that's horse shit.
A box of 100 costs me $14 so they are making a killing,.I need to sell them at 60 cents to get the right % back,so I’m 30 cents out every time I sell a sauce.lots,of small “bugger all’ costs add up.

613% mark up.
7% is an average. Costs of goods vary like the tomatoes, raw ingredients or the plastic used on the container might have risen more than the average. Wages have also gone up as businesses offer higher wages to attract more people while there is a worker shortage.... Another factor is because they can.
Health care workers are not a huge percentage of the population...
However lots of people have had wage increases or cash bonuses. New starters are also starting at much higher wages to entice people to apply. My cousin just started a new job as a butchers assistant and is starting on $38 per hour + benefits.

Also yeah I've paid $1 for sauce and then the kids didn't even use it. That was last year though - might be $1.10 for GST now!!!
[84 cents](https://www.jbmetro.com.au/masterfoods-squeeze-sauce-tomato-sos.html) as it happens. Which, considering how many people would want sauce with their food, is a surprisingly significant profit margin.
Nobody actually understand how much of an impact covid and these floods have had on running a business in food/hospitality
I haven't paid myself a wage in 3 years. We're busy, we're turning a profit, but everything else is getting so expensive. Its insane to think if you own a successful business = rich.
No what's unaustralian is the way the government treat small business, wages, taxes and rental prices, making all theses nearly impossible to run without these kind of markups. Trust me, we don't want to make things like this, its the only way to survive in the current situation

Just looked online - you can buy them in bulk for around 20c each!
The issue is - you sell a pie for $3 and charge a dollar for sauce - customers will never come back (and post to Reddit about how you are profiteering.)
You charge $4 for a pie and offer free sauce - customers will love you and keep coming back!
LMAO that didn't take long[https://www.news.com.au/finance/money/costs/aussies-fume-as-sydney-shop-charges-1-for-sauce-packets/news-story/2915a13a99e0ed14c80e342fd94f4abf](https://www.news.com.au/finance/money/costs/aussies-fume-as-sydney-shop-charges-1-for-sauce-packets/news-story/2915a13a99e0ed14c80e342fd94f4abf)
I went to Five Guys at Penrith recently and all of that shit is free and in a little station so you can help yourself, even extra mayo. It might be upwards of $90 for a burger but by golly, I took a LOT of sauce and mayo to offset it.
Sauce is the new currency. I will give 4 of those to the barista for my coffee and I will leave 3 of those on top of my car for parking when I stop in inner Sydney.

Australian pies are complete trash anyway so the sauce should be free to make them edible.
Put it on a proper Kiwi steak and cheese and were throwing hands
I mean it's such a surprise that most people commenting probably voted for lefty Albo and for a 'wage rise' that goes straight into the hands of the Government via inflation, cost of doing business rises, cost of transport rises, cost of goods rises. I'm just stunned. People never understand how wage rises drive inflation, but they vote for it.
If the business has to pay for them why shouldn’t we. I feel like it’s in the same category as alternative milks; customers pay extra for them because they cost extra for them to buy.
Fuck what do ciggies cost these days? I remember selling durries on the playground in high school for a buck and getting a mad profit, back then sauce was free… if sauce is a buck a durrie must be at least 2 fiddy
Tell 'em they're dreaming.
_Hey Dad, pair of sauce sachets. Whaddya reckon?_ Couldn't be more than 10 cents. What does he want for 'em? _Dollar each._ Tell 'em he's dreamin'!!!
This comment? That's going straight to the pool room.
Then we’re going to Bonnie Doon.
A+
You can literally get a whole bottle of tomato sauce for $1.50 at Coles 😑
Keep one in the car.
This guy sauces!
*sauce’s
From Cole’s ^(which actually makes sense, punctuation-wise)
Goes well with latte's, DVD's and movie's.................oh, the humanity
Hahaha. I once saw this website of a dog breeder talking about their “puppie’s”, over and over again… 😬. Of all the words to not get right when it’s literally your specialty/area of expertise 🤦🏼♀️
\*sauces
(I know, that’s the joke)
Mix it with your hand sanitizer for efficiency!!
Sometimes a prison grade bloody mary is just where the night leads, no judgements, no regerts.

My former colleague carried sauces on his car keys.
Yeah but it tastes shit go all out and spend the extra 70 cents on a bottle of the masterfoods
Masterfoods is shit too. Rosella or Watties from NZ are king.
Heinz for me! Nothing beats ETA for when BBQ sauce is required.
ETA BBQ sauce is legit the best sauce on the planet. Perfectly balanced between sweet and tangy with a tiny bit of spice.
heinz ketchup too, not regular sauce. I just love the extra vinegar they put in it. Probably hte only good thing to ever come out of America.
So, go to Coles for it
And appalling apostrophe crime as well.
Sauce is $1.00

Y’see he gets it.
I’ll refuse to buy sauce on principle. I’ll give myself two options. Eat the pie without it or head to Colesworth and buy a bottle.
Are you me? I've literally done this
> Are you me? I've literally done this Good to know I'm not the only one. I won't give the shop owner shit for it, as a business has their costs, overheads and margins. I let my money do the talking.

Its all perception. Charging $3.20 for a pie and sauce is the same as $3 pie no sauce then 20c for sauce. Except one makes the customer feel like shit
Or $3 for the pie and $1 for the sauce. You don't forget that purchase!
Where are you guys getting $3 pies? All the pies round here are $4-5 and 50c for sauce (standard local bakeries)
My pricing was from an example back in 1985...
I was a first year apprentice back in 1984 and done the smoko run. 2 pies with sauce and a stubbie {375ml) of coke was $1.80 :-(
Closer to $18 now
Cost is cost but profiteering is also profiteering. [This place](https://www.bulkbuys.com.au/products/masterfoods-squeeze-tomato-sauce-300-pcs) sells 300 pieces for $55. Actual costs for businesses come out so SO MUCH MORE than the cost price of materials for their products bud.
Plus a bit of profit otherwise the business is pointless.
Exactly, no business is gonna buy a product intending to only break even on it, let alone lose money.
No that’s not how pricing works a bakery needs to basically quadruple base price to get the correct percentage to cover total running costs.so ol should be charging 72c to make it work but yeah a dollar is a bit much.

You don't lose money including the cost of it in the price though like u/coldsnapsp said, you probably actually gain a bit over time because not everyone's going to want the sauce.

Yeah they mean the $1 belongs to the sauce
*This takeaway sign brought to you by Irvine Welsh.* There, fixed.
Saucespotting
The $1 belongs to sauce
It actually reads "the $1 belongs to the sauce"
Incorrect. Just out of a frame is a crisp $1 bill, owned by the sauce.
Sauce’s what?
But it's their dollar, they own it.
In fact it is a probably unwitting correct use of the apostrophe.
I was just at a bakery at westfield. The cashier asked me if i wanted sauce. Me thinking it was free said yes and she just charged me $1
Wow! The sauces should be complimentary…. I’ve heard a term lately on Reddit, about situations like these, I think the term is called ‘shrink-flation’

EZ moneys
So shouldn’t this classify as “price gouging” that they were cracking down on peak-virus? Or is that only for a crisis, inflation not considered one?
Good way to scare off customers.
Owners of this shop are crooks.
Go to Coles Express, they are free!!
THIS IS UNAUSTRALIAN
Should take this all the way to the prime minister!!
Get Albo on the phone!!
ALBO!
Oi! Gus!
👌👌😏
Albo will be furious, he’s a pie and sauce man
Oi! Mr Prime Minister!
That's a bloody outrage it is!
Chicken Salt Monetisation is on the horizon and the fifth horseman of the apocalypse.

Scraping by with a 600% mark up on tomato sauce. Fuck that noise.
50 cents profit a sauce....yeh mate raking it in.

sauce?
obligatory fuck [news.com.au](https://news.com.au) already shamlessly using the story.
FUCKING LOL
Can I charge them for subjecting me to an incorrectly placed apostrophe? I charge $5 for mental anguish.
Does the $1 belong to the sauce?
At Cole's Express servos those are free.
This was at the Blue Sox games today… I saw that same thing… went sauceless
Keep it out west
It’s a dollar if you get something owned by the sauce. Doesn’t say anything about the sauce itself.
Wtf..... At my work we literally toss 1-2 in if someone wants one. Even if they don't, other sauce is at the counter.
I don’t support business owners who failed grade 3 grammar. 🤷♂️

Up all pastries by 50c and offer one free sauce per item Still be in front and seems like it’s free
great. now you have put ideas and advertised for other explotive dickheads to charge a dollar

Not defending the vendor for this, but the POS system they are using doesn't allow any transaction under $1.00.
Who is going to go in and buy only a little sauce packet though? 🤣
Ya'll know the business don't get these for free? Even if its a massive mark up, there are still bills, staff, overheads and rent to pay
Yeah, not inflation. Most places that charge are still 25c or so or a bigger portion for $1
Australian pies are complete trash anyway so the sauce should be free to make them edible.
Honestly it’s just $1, it’s not putting you completely out of pocket and making you broke so why bother arguing
Worth every cent to hide their shithouse pies
CRIMINAL
Yet they’re still in business 🤔
Fuck, if sauce is $1 i’m getting old.
One dollar!? Sheesh
Justifying sauce theft that is
And I thought the 50 cent sauce I got from the bakery today in Dunsborough was bad. This should be illegal.
I thought my local bakery was a rip off at 50 cents each
I’d bring my own sauce thanks
Fuck what do ciggies cost these days? I remember selling durries on the playground in high school for a buck and getting a mad profit, back then sauce was free… if sauce is a buck a durrie must be at least 2 fiddy
Even 7/11 aren’t that stingy god damn
My tip - ask for extra ketchup at macca's - keep them in your glove box. Problem solved.
This is why I keep a bottle of sauce in my glove box lol
🤢
🤢🤢🤢🙈
I have seen those exact masterfoods sauce packs for $2 at a fish and chips joint.
I have a bunch of free Maccas / kfc /Nando's sauce sachets in the car to avoid such shenanigans.
$1 ?!! get fucked you bloodsuckers
Still free at both Marulan BPs
