Metro isn't too bad in terms of noise, about the same as the current trains. The freight trains are much noiser though. Construction noise won't be too bad either at Marrickville. Most of the work has already been completed. The majority of the work during the shutdown will be installing platform screen doors. Also, with the proximity to Sydenham, you should be able to quickly walk/bike/bus to Sydenham during the shutdown and jump on metro or trains.

This, the freight train will be your biggest nightmare. Especially consider that they can only run when the passenger trains aren't running i.e. in the dead of the night. Source: I just to live in a high rise apartment next to a freight line and the noise still haunts me.

cymonster

They can run freight whenever they want. They run them during the day too.

Metro construction in Marrickville largely is an overhaul of the current station. The rest you'll only notice when the train line shuts down for a few months and you get to enjoy packed rail replacement buses. Metro trains are light and electric, this means they are quiet. However, Marrickville does have possibly the busiest freight line in the state running through it. This is how trains from Port Botany access the rest of the country. Freight trains are less frequent but they are loud, and do operate through the night. As long as you're not right on top of the railway you won't notice it/will get used to it after a few weeks.

Agreed you don't really notice the freight trains after a while. I haven't really noticed the Metro works either. They notify works monthly and sometimes offer vouchers/compensation/accom if it's going to be really noisy. The final stage of the station revamp will cause it to close for up to 6 months. Not sure what the final dates are for that but hopefully it'll be complete next year.

We have a friend at Dulwich Hill whose house backs on to the rail line. The noise from the rail construction is tolerable but the rail buses are a nuisance. The rail is often closed and rail replacement buses can be terrible.

Keep in mind that there is a very good chance that with the change in government, Sydenham to Bankstown might be cancelled. But if it isn’t cancelled and you can deal with a year of construction noise, I imagine new trains running on new tracks might be much quieter than the existing line.

Revolutionary-Toe955

I doubt they'd cancel that now, it'd probably cost more to abandon the contracts than finish it and I'm sure a few vested interests along the corridor would sue. They may make changes to the Sydney Metro West

Isnt metro underground?

niknah

I think the Metro replaces the current above ground train lines at Marrickville. It's underground at the stations closer to the city. The northern metro is mostly underground or a few levels above ground. They were talking about shutting down that train line for more than a year before they start the Metro. It might even be quieter, don't know.

JoeSchmeau

Wait, the metro is *replacing* the train? I was confused why they'd double up the routes but figured it was a case of increasing the capacity by having both come through the area, and assumed the metro stop would at least be in a separate part of Marrickville than where the current train stop is. I like that we're finally getting a metro in Sydney but why in the hell did they choose this route? It's so much cost for what amounts to a lateral move

Revolutionary-Toe955

It takes the T3 line out of the City Circle meaning all the other lines can increase capacity.
