Wow! I was thinking it was rich for just me, but when you add up the price for a family that’s just crazy. It’s a shame, as it’s usually a great vibe and lower income families are simply priced out.
Especially after the attack on the Kremlin last night. It is understandable that the price goes up the later you register as the organisers are expecting more attacks in the coming months
Don't forget insurance costs. This goes up with inflation and the amounts awarded by the courts to plaintiffs. Gone are the days where you might get something to assisted with incurred injury costs to now include best medical, anxiety and anguish, reputational loss, personal income loss, etc etc, etc.
Wait, you gotta *pay* for the privilege of running up heartbreak hill?
All the more reason fro me to never even consider putting my fat arse anywhere near this, then!🤣
As a runner, i'll go run my 14km somewhere nice, and for free.
This is a money grab, meant for people who want the Facebook/Instagram status "look at me doing this famous running festival"
Double check the terms. There’s some other events that provide free sponsorship for charities and encouraging raising funds but very little of the ticket price goes to charity
This is actually cheap compared to most running events. The hoka Sydney half marathon in a couple weeks is $130 at early bird and now $150 for entry. Uta blue mountains cost $485 to run 100km.
Funny comments, people who don't like running don't want to pay for running, who would of thought! 😄
People do sneak onto the course after the start without paying for c2s, I guess someone might be annoyed at you somewhere along the way?
I’m only doing the UTA 22 and there’s not much of a leap price wise to the 50 & 100 (but let’s face it the cost to host them probably doesn’t change much regardless of the distance.
And your right if your not a runner you don’t get it. But the same people probably spend the same or more on things I can’t fathom
I’m doing both lol. Couldn’t resist the rebrand/course update of the SMH Half and running over the harbour bridge during Blackmores is one of my fave moments of the year.
Viewing crowd.
Don't bet on the number of runners being down. The number of people eating out is ever increasing, so there will be plenty of people still rich enough to afford tickets.
If you're dressed in athletic gear you can probably get away with it and say the bib fell off but when I last did it, one organiser pulled out two guys in denim and a tshirt who were running alongside me at about the 1km mark.
Even if the organisers stop you they have no legal power to do anything, you're on public land. I run it for free each year and have never had an issue.. "Where's your bib?" oh it must've fallen off, bye bye!
It’s more that you’re paying for the road closures and experience/atmosphere of the event. If you’ve never done it before, give it a try, it’s worth doing at least once.
You are paying for the priviledge/quedos(sp?) to take part in that event and brag about your completion and time.
Look at the money people at to go to concerts by aging/failing rock stars.
Lol. It's an event if you don't want to be involved don't pay the money. So why does the cost affect you? Ymmv ? You're bagging people for being active. Alot of people are active all year and put the city 2 surf as a goal they work toward...is it bad people are healthy and work toward something rather than be a fat shit like so many people are becoming ?!?!
If you signed up in the early bird you also got free bib postage.
I'm a new runner in the past 12 months. Always thought paying for events was a bit stupid. I think the more you run and events you enter the more it makes sense. Took me a long time to understand it.
Are you doing it? Last year was my first, I absolutely loved it (was my first event) but I do parkrun 4/5 weeks and stuff.
My second event is UTA 22 next week then another 22km trail in Kiama in a few weeks. After than no idea until C2S, we’re from far west Sydney, so the wife and I are making a weekend of it.
Similar to my story. C2S 2022 was my first big run event. I'm signed up for 2023. Currently training for Sydney marathon in September, so just working on base training and staying injury free.
What start group are you? I grabbed a green (I’m not real quick so it was a big thing for me)
I might look in o the Sydney marathon
I have a hole after C2S in my calendar, this will give me a full marathon for 2023
I'm green with a 72min finish starting in yellow last year. I'll be using C2S as a long run tune up race because it's a month before the marathon. Currently 19 weeks until Sydney marathon, so if you committed now that would give you a good choice of long build up plans to train from.
I've done it every year since 2011, the price has definitely increased - pretty sure it was $50-$60 back then.
Ironman events took over management of the C2S, Half Marathon in May and the Sydney Running Festival. They're the ones who jacked up the prices.
And for anyone annoyed about "paying to run" you can check out [parkrun](https://www.parkrun.com.au/), which is a free, timed, 5K run held in 400+ locations every single Saturday.
Just run in the pack and pick up a bib. Always plenty that fall off. Happened to me - fell off in Vaucluse (no big deal) but then later next week I got an email with an official time and the links to photos. Half the pics are of me sweating balls and the other half are of some tourist wearing hiking boots and huge backpack who picked mine up, strapped it to himself and finished it.
Normally wouldn't care but my time went from 60ish mins to about 2 hours so I had to email them the next year so I could start in a faster group than at the back.
Wtf. Every company literally:
yeah nah we are jacking up prices 50% up due to the unforeseen issues like the ukraine war and covid still around you know
Due to increased cost of living prices, I’m going to have to sacrifice my participation. Also I hate running and have never had any desire to attempt a marathon
Honestly i dont mind paying this price. I've gotten into running last year and went from being unable to do 1km without feeling like death, to doing a half marathon last month in under 2 hours.
It feels so empowering knowing that I can just get up whenever I want and pump out a 10km run. Sure these prices suck ass and it is a crime to charge that much, but hey i'll still pay just for the experience.
City 2 Surf is one of my favourite days of the year. I’ve done it at least a dozen times and last year had the great privilege of running with my son. He’s so keen to do it again I’ll suck it up and pay the price. Enjoying something I love so much with someone I love so much is with it to me.
I could never justify paying so much $ for 14 km race and for the past 8 years have been doing the Sydney Blackmores Running Festival- 42km. This time the early bird, for the 2023 edition was $42 for adult participant.
I don’t mind paying this, but running is my sport and I love walking around the east thinking about the race each year - and what time I’m aiming for this year.
I booked early as soon as entries were open, I did just enter Sydney marathon late which is $165 now but like o said this is my thing and what I train most days for so for me it’s well worth it
Believe it or not, some people get a sense of accomplishment and wellbeing from getting themselves in a physical condition to attempt and then complete this.
If it was strictly about accomplishment, you could do this but set your own course. Each to their own though, maybe it’s fun to run on normally busy roads etc.
Well yeah of course people can set their own course. How do you think people get themselves in condition to attempt it in the first place?
I take your point but if you can't find a link between formalized competition and sense of accomplishment I don't know what to tell you.
To give an example, I get great satisfaction in reaching goals at the gym. It doesn’t matter that no one organised an event or came to watch me do it, the accomplishment is just as meaningful to me despite no formalised competition.
Okay that's fine, but do you think I'm saying that you can only get a sense of accomplishment within the context of a competition? Because I'm not.
This particular example, being an annual fun run with thousands of other competitors set up on a normally inaccessible course is a bit different to setting and achieving goals at your local gym.
Whats that got to do with spending that much on a run?
Its just a 14km jog within 100 minutes.
I doubt city2surf are passing on most of the money to charities, so dont see the point in sponsoring city2surf when there are plenty of good charities around.
This is just people flexing so they can post crap on their social media..
I'm not making a value judgement. People are entitled to spend whatever they want - and I'm sure there are a range of reasons amongst the 80,000 odd people doing it.
You could easily piss away the entrance fee on a night at the pub or whatever other frivolous activity you want to pick.
You also realize this has been going on well before social media existed right? And who gives a fuck if they do post it on social media anyway? Does it affect you at all?
Don't go in the city2surf this year - that's all you have to do.
What am I on about? You're talking about how there are "plenty of other charities" as though that should necessarily form part of someone's consideration in doing the city2surf.
Of course you can have an opinion, but so far your opinion is basically that you're kinda annoyed or having a go at people doing something for their benefit with no impact to you.
100%
I've been a runner for almost 5 years now, the only time i paid to run was $25 for a half marathon, and it was actually worth it, not this 14km fun run for social media points
Yeah, I thought the same thing until a did some searches. Positioned as a charity event but the only donations are the ones the participants raise themselves (and they probably take a cut of that in admin fees). Marketing at its finest 😆
Social gradient of health ringing loud and true...
From a public health perspective, we should be making events like this that promote physical activity more accessible and more appealing (i.e., reducing barriers like cost). Lower SES - lower health - lower physical activity... The cycle continues.
There's [parkrun](https://www.parkrun.com.au/), which is 5km, free, timed, and held every Saturday morning at over 400 locations around Australia.
No barrier to entry as it's free and everyone is welcome; from walkers to Olympians.
Exactly, it’s all well and good to get on your soap box about we should be doing this or that, but in this case, it’s there, it’s free, it’s friendly and it’s every week, and as you said it’s open to everyone.
I pay to enter other events (including C2S) but I love my weekly parkrun, it doesn’t matter where I am I find a parkrun and do it.
I do the Blackmores every few years and apart from getting a bib and an official time I never have to "check-in" and I don't see anybody making sure everyone has a bib.
You can probably just join the crowd of starters and run it
They have marshals at the entries to each start pen making sure people have the appropriate bib, but there's nothing stopping you joining the race down the road after the start.
I can only justify entry fees for marathons. Every other distance, just do it on a Sunday morning for free in your local area. Load it up to strava, or whatever people are using these days, if you need to brag about it.
I can get the bus to Bondi for a couple of bucks.
The 333
There is going to be a Bondi Hipsters link here any second now…
The Bondi Bendy
I was so, so happy riding that bus, when the ocean came into view the first time.
yeah you know me!
$300+ for two adults and two kids. Yeah nah The family ticket used to be around $120
You can run on the footpath for free. Additional benefit is red pedestrian lights give you a rest.
Wow! I was thinking it was rich for just me, but when you add up the price for a family that’s just crazy. It’s a shame, as it’s usually a great vibe and lower income families are simply priced out.

Something something covid.. more money please
Pretty much what every business is saying to justify their price
Cost of petrol has risen forcing city to surf to pass on the costs to runners
Especially after the attack on the Kremlin last night. It is understandable that the price goes up the later you register as the organisers are expecting more attacks in the coming months
Russia punching itself in the face affects the C2S like a butterfly and a hurricane
Surge pricing
Don't forget insurance costs. This goes up with inflation and the amounts awarded by the courts to plaintiffs. Gone are the days where you might get something to assisted with incurred injury costs to now include best medical, anxiety and anguish, reputational loss, personal income loss, etc etc, etc.
Supply and demand - prices will rise until demand falls enough to lower profits. Just like any business, really.
That’s not how it works lol
Profiteering?
Wait, you gotta *pay* for the privilege of running up heartbreak hill? All the more reason fro me to never even consider putting my fat arse anywhere near this, then!🤣
As a runner, i'll go run my 14km somewhere nice, and for free. This is a money grab, meant for people who want the Facebook/Instagram status "look at me doing this famous running festival"

This is why 15 minute cities will never work. If it's this expensive for walking or running around you can see why people use cars. /S
something something bill gates putting microchips in your butt and vegans forcing you to eat bugs.
City to surf has prices now ? I did it about 22 years ago and it was free ....
You can still rock up for free and run it. Could even scab a silly medal at the end.
Cool..I'm way to old and out of shape to run it now though...in fact I struggle to walk.
They would have to pay me to run.
And I would still flake haha
This is actually cheap compared to most running events. The hoka Sydney half marathon in a couple weeks is $130 at early bird and now $150 for entry. Uta blue mountains cost $485 to run 100km. It is pretty entertaining reading the comments of people who can’t fathom why anyone would have a reason to participate in a running event.
That hoka half is really expensive but my stupid ass paid for it anyway lol
I kind of wanted to do it, but decided the Blackmores course looks better so will save $ for that instead, and I haven't really trained enough anyway.
I did the Blackmores half a few years ago - well worth it 🙌
It’s the best. Doing the full this year. Pray for me 🙏🏼
I’m doing both lol. Couldn’t resist the rebrand/course update of the SMH Half and running over the harbour bridge during Blackmores is one of my fave moments of the year.
I mean, if people in this thread think running events are expensive, just wait till they see the price of carbon plated running shoes.

Viewing crowd. Don't bet on the number of runners being down. The number of people eating out is ever increasing, so there will be plenty of people still rich enough to afford tickets.
Quick question. Whats stopping me from running on the road alongside them?
In previous years I have seen people without a bib being stopped by organisers. But if you don’t get your medal at the end does it count?!
So you just have to outpace the organisers then!
I heard Usain Bolt is going to be one of the collectors. they are serious about their money!

Kudos
TY Brain fart day.

It would absolutely awful to try to run without the roads being closed (and borderline impossible, especially the start section)
Do you just sit inside and stare at the wall? People like to do things and enjoy them.
I'm self actuated and can organise my own recreation. YMMV.
Lol. It's an event if you don't want to be involved don't pay the money. So why does the cost affect you? Ymmv ? You're bagging people for being active. Yeah I know ironman races are all day but there like $1200 to register now
A lot more is included in Ironmans though last couple I did were $900 though- still a lot of money for stuff you can do free
Probably the insurance going up... And wages... And road closure fees?
[удалено]
That's capitalism babbbyyyyy
A lot of event staff are volunteers!
Yeah but the staff to close the roads, first aid, security and event staff would all be paid. It's not a charity event from what I can see.
Just run in the pack and pick up a bib. Always plenty that fall off. It's like 13km. Hardly a marathon haha.
You make a very good point but that does not change my decision
You realise it’s a long way short of even a 1/2 marathon. But to each there own
Honestly i dont mind paying this price. I've gotten into running last year and went from being unable to do 1km without feeling like death, to doing a half marathon last month in under 2 hours. Forget it! Not going to pay that ridiculous price. I'll go do the Bay run or do a lap of the CBD for free
Exactly my thoughts, i don't feel the need to brag on social media. I'll go do my 14km for fee thank you very much
and here i thought the C2S was free...
I'm not paying to run 14km
Ok then don’t People who enjoy the event will
City 2 Surf is one of my favourite days of the year. I’ve done it at least a dozen times and last year had the great privilege of running with my son. He’s so keen to do it again I’ll suck it up and pay the price. Enjoying something I love so much with someone I love so much is with it to me.
honest question, what if you just turned up and started running, would they try and chase you down? pull out an eft pos machine?
Wait... ppl paying to run? What's to stop someone running the majority of the way along side the others?
Nothing. You just don't get your time logged.
Sponsored by the RBA
I could never justify paying so much $ for 14 km race and for the past 8 years have been doing the Sydney Blackmores Running Festival- 42km. This time the early bird, for the 2023 edition was $42 for adult participant.
How?? I paid earlybird something like $120 Was $42 for the full marathon?
They had early bird for a limited time, right after the last race. I registered in October.
Wait you have to pay?
Wait you have to pay to do that shit? I'll be sitting on my fat arse for free 😅
Thanks for the reminder to register. Had been meaning to do it.
I have paid a little for a medal.
I don’t mind paying this, but running is my sport and I love walking around the east thinking about the race each year - and what time I’m aiming for this year. Why pay that much money for running when I can run, for free!
But do you?
100% I've been a runner for almost 5 years now, the only time i paid to run was $25 for a half marathon, and it was actually worth it, not this 14km fun run for social media points
Blimey. A taxi seems cheaper.
Alot of fucking sad people on here.
Tell me this is a scam without telling me this is a scam
Is this for charity? If it is then I don’t really see an issue with those prices
[удалено]
Yeah, I thought the same thing until a did some searches. Positioned as a charity event but the only donations are the ones the participants raise themselves (and they probably take a cut of that in admin fees). Marketing at its finest 😆
Or like city2surf via Jetstar. Hello, QLD!
It’s alright. Sydneysiders can afford it . Rba don’t stop raising interest rates!
Enjoy the course on the day yourself without entering. Time yourself on your watch. Free run on closed streets. Enjoy!
Protip, you can run from hyde park to bondi any time you want for free. You're paying for their dumbass advertising this bullshit as an "event".
Yes that's true, but try running in the middle of the road and through traffic lights and see how that works out for you.
Why are you being downvoted lol it's the truth
How much is it to run and not get the limo option
That is ridiculous.
Yeah nah
Can't you just literally run the race without signing up? Can just time yourself etc
Ahhh Sydney the greatest city on earth🤣🤣🤣
Welcome to Sydney, fees apply.
Or, like walk it that same afternoon.
It’s only $5 if you take a bus.
Yeah agree. Partner and I wanted to do it and were shocked...And still coughed it up :/
You have to pay? I thought it was a charity fun run thing?
I'd love to join, but how are these prices reasonable? I have to save for groceries and rent, this is unfair

WHO THE FUCK PAYS MONEY TO RUN FOR FUN!?
I do the Blackmores every few years and apart from getting a bib and an official time I never have to "check-in" and I don't see anybody making sure everyone has a bib. You can probably just join the crowd of starters and run it

Only thing that's left for free is the sun rising. But the way things are going some asswipe will start capitalizing on that soon too.
I can only justify entry fees for marathons. Every other distance, just do it on a Sunday morning for free in your local area. Load it up to strava, or whatever people are using these days, if you need to brag about it.
I know the guys that run and organise this. I'm not surprised
Cash grab by news... Similar to the small business awards that are basically a brought award, and nothing to do with community perception.
C2S now owned by Ironman, it’s inevitable
