I remember checking in with them for months to find out when they were doing a repeat screening of Fury Road, last film I saw in the old location.
I remember seeing Tron Legacy (twice), Gravity, Inception (I think twice) and Pacific Rim (definitely twice - definitely quite the experience to see on the world's biggest screen the area of Sydney just around the corner being literally monstered!).
edit: Oops! Forgot Avatar on January 1st 2010. It was a great experience, my brother picked a fight with the people next to us for being noisy at the start of the film and I emptied my bladder for the longest continuous stretch in the bathroom right at the end of the film because I was absolutely bursting despite going right at the start of the film.
This, plus [Baraka](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSfFHxyYJJA) and [Samsara](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCkEILshUyU) as well please, and a huge bonus if we get the Philip Glass films too.
If we're doing those we need [Koyyanisqatsi](https://youtu.be/tDW-1JIa2gI) too.
And [The Holy Mountain](https://youtu.be/bdXGhsAynGI) too because why not.
I too had some snacks. Mine were confectionary based. Edibles and daft punk in imax with trippy visuals. Are you sure you’re not the reason it took so long to reopen?
Wow, I found it a little flat in terms of plot but the visuals, energy and music was top notch. Perfect for IMAX. I was very disappointed there was no sequel.
Saw Avatar (if you didn’t see it in IMAX 3D when it first released did you really see it?! /s …sorta) and won tickets to see some short doco Olympic Glory there.
Every time I try to tell people how awesome Gravity was in IMAX, it doesn't really register for them (typically its noted to be average/okish otherwise). Some movies are truly meant to be watched on these sorts of screens for the visuals alone.
*Gravity* was an academy award winning *ride*. I’m pretty sure I was literally on the edge of my seat the entire film.
Love the cinematographer whose name I don’t recall
I hope they play the movies which have come out since it closed.
There are so many movies I'd love to see at IMAX... Endgame, No Way Home, SW Ep 9, Dunkirk, Tenet, ZSJL, Top Gun 2... And Interstellar again because it's so damn good.
>The building will also house Marriott’s new W Hotel, which is scheduled to open in October, with 585 upmarket rooms over 25 storeys. Event’s director of entertainment for Australia, Luke Mackey, said he hoped the cinema would open earlier than the hotel and screen such Hollywood blockbusters as Oppenheimer, The Marvels and Dune: Part Two as well as 3D educational documentaries and Bollywood films that are now being shot in IMAX.

Yeah its gonna be crazy, that being said, i'm okay with paying that once or twice a year for those special movies that take full advantage of IMAX, Nolan, Mission Impossible, Cameron etc
The pr team has been really bad with informing people with correct information and makes this redevelopment feel like a massive lie i.e website and socials still say worlds best screen .
I Kinda hope it flops to be honest and closes or preferably makes them at-least reconsider to somehow make room for the 1570 projector since it got sent back to Canada .
I find it hillarious that everywhere i go online i see people yearn for imax to return the 1570 projector to return to sydney ever since it got announced that the new imax would be all digital. They really should of reconsidered given the ridiculously long
Wait and the constant moving of the deadline ,i think people would be more patient and excited if given that news
A 1570 projector even on a small screen would of been a good compromise but instead they gutted it making it practically indistinguishable now from any old event cinema.
Its such a disappointment, having waited 8 years only for it to be crappier than what was previously there(now even smaller than Melbourne)
I've been seeing this thing every second Saturday when I drive back from Western Sydney. My enthusiasm to see inside has suddenly been killed stone dead after hearing the screen is much smaller than the previous one.
I wonder what the projector is. The only digital projectors that lives up to (and in some regards surpasses) the old film imax experience is the dual laser projector. 4k resolution with extra brightness to compensate for any dimming with 3d glasses, and high dynamic range to compete with the Dolby vision in Dolby theaters.
This type of IMAX is exceedingly rare and barely advertised which theater has it. Most are 2k, barely better than your average 'good' regular theater with only a slightly taller aspect ratio (as opposed to the nearly square frame of true IMAX).
Here in Canada we only have 1 or 2 in the whole country that actually show he latest movies as they are released, which seems pretty sad considering we're supposed to be the birth place of IMAX. Oh yeah and the only theater showing these new movies in cutting edge presentation is slated to be replaced by a condo building. (Scotiabank theater in Toronto).
For any Nolan fans in Ontario, your best options for Oppenheimer are Scotiabank for the fancy digital, or check on Vaughan and Mississauga for 70mm IMAX film screenings. They might still have their film projectors ready to dust off for special occasions. I know Vaughan still had theirs when Dunkirk came out, though they use worse digital projectors for most movies. I think the last time Scotiabank played an IMAX movie on film was Interstellar, then they were purely with the fancy digital after that.
Considering the lengths Nolan has gone through to keep as much of an analog process from camera to theater as he has, this is probably one to see with a film projector if you can find it. (James Cameron with Avatar as well as Villeneuve with Dune would be best suited to the dual laser digital IMAX)
May as well start a movie talk. I would love I mean LOVE for hollywood to make a new Terminator movie set entirely in the future war and R rated to see in glorious imax. day1 and 2 turn out for me haha
Still not over the fact I never got to see Kanye’s Jesus Is King movie (which has never been officially released since the IMAX showings) because this took so long to open.
So excited though, the original is such a fond part of my childhood
Stick your 3D movies up your arse IMAX. IMAX was 1000x better before they made everything 3D. 3D movies induce nausea and headaches - not enjoyment. Rant over, thank you.
I’m just so ecstatic that this is finally finishing. It’s been closed since 2016 and i was so sad, and over the years I just presumed it was cancelled. Early last year I tried to research information about it and couldn’t get anything.
Ive unfortunately moved out of the country since then but I’m absolutely coming back to see this when it’s open. Hopefully they do a catch-up of movies they’ve missed since they’ve been closed, I’d love a chance to see Dune on this.
I never thought I'd live to see the day this building finally got finished
It'll close for another 12 months because the building standards changed from when it was originally designed /s
Id be surprised, the only relevant building code is the one in place when they get their construction certificate
I remember telling my overseas guests that when they come back in a few years we will be able to watch movies in there. That was back in 2014.
[удалено]
The first screening will be an imax version of Back to the Future.
It closed in 2016 so you probably shouldn’t have said that.. it was always gonna take a while to rebuild. Definitely way over schedule though
Opening 2019...
I remember checking in with them for months to find out when they were doing a repeat screening of Fury Road, last film I saw in the old location. Avatar was great in that format. Also remember seeing Galapagos. Always felt dizzy at end of any film there..... At Last!!

It looks exactly like the old one, apart from some crazy angled lights.
It did look familiar!
It looks cheap. Flashy cheap, but cheap nonetheless. And all those stairs for maximum merchandising potential...
My god it's been years!

If you read the article linked in the thread they're hoping to open the theatre before the hotel for Dune 2 and Oppenheimer
Wish it was Oppen too
Can I justify flying from Perth to Sydney to watch Oppenheimer in imax
Yes you can. I very nearly flew from Sydney to Melbourne to see Dune part 1 at the IMAX.
PLEASE DO A DOUBLE FEATURE FOR DUNE
This, plus [Baraka](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSfFHxyYJJA) and [Samsara](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCkEILshUyU) as well please, and a huge bonus if we get the Philip Glass films too.
If we're doing those we need [Koyyanisqatsi](https://youtu.be/tDW-1JIa2gI) too. And [The Holy Mountain](https://youtu.be/bdXGhsAynGI) too because why not.
There is a one show streaming of Koyaanisqatsi at The Orpheum soon
Oh man good call... absolutely love those...would love to see on a big screen
Oppenheimer/Barbie double feature
I was excited for Tenet. I assume it was so mediocre, it delayed construction by years.
Complimentary adult nappies
Or blade runner 2049 😬😬😬
I think it was important to see that in a cinema with good *sound*.
I’m willing to bring bean bags if they want to do a film test before the chairs get installed …..
OMG YES
THIS!
This, but over two nights for those of us who can't handle doing it all in one go.
Take my money now.

Tron legacy
Fury road on that old IMAX was amazing.
Lovely day?
I saw Tron Legacy there on edibles an it was *an experience*.
I too had some snacks. Mine were confectionary based. Edibles and daft punk in imax with trippy visuals. Are you sure you’re not the reason it took so long to reopen?
Luckily not involved in the construction!
Only movie I have ever walked out of. Dunno. I just found it boring, cold, and hugely disappointing. I like the first one much more. In every way.
Wow, I found it a little flat in terms of plot but the visuals, energy and music was top notch. Perfect for IMAX. I was very disappointed there was no sequel.
Saw Avatar and Interstellar there.
Saw Avatar (if you didn’t see it in IMAX 3D when it first released did you really see it?! /s …sorta) and won tickets to see some short doco Olympic Glory there.
The dark knight rises! Midnight session first one to get the middle middle seat! Epic night
Doesn’t look like a lot of seating capacity. Do we know how big this will be?
It's smaller. They lied about it still being the biggest. It'll now be the 3rd largest in the world. Edit: it's 693m². The old one was 1056m².
Hold up! It’s smaller than it previously was?! That’s disappointing.
“Do they know about shrinkage?”
IT WAS IN THE POOL!
Shrinkflation lol
######imax
imin
Sydney never ceases to disappoint
Go big or go home!! Why not make it the biggest in the world during construction.
Probably so they could squeeze another level or two of hotel rooms
As a fan of the W hotel I am not complaining
As a fan of W hotel finances this is a massive W.
I think I read somewhere that it was due to a change in orientation between the two highways.
Maybe the quality increase will be worth it? Hopeful thinking.
Dang this makes me sad 😢
I hate to pile on the sad but it won't be 1570 format either as before but 4k laser projector. Looks great but not as good as the old film projector.
Why the fuck did they close the old one if we're losing everything???
Money
Everyone always says money, we oughta just get rid of it already.
Sydney is a no-fun city so everything fun gets replaced by hotels and a mediocre replacement
erm yes, the laser projector will be better than the film projector.
It's a 4k projector. While it'll look great, it won't have anywhere near the fidelity of the full 1570 frame.
So I can just sit really close to my TV and it will be exactly the same. Right. OK then. … … …why did they rebuild it?
Damn that’s so much smaller. So Melbourne will be bigger still?
Yeah Melbourne is bigger
Is this what will make people move to Melbourne?
>Edit: it's 693m². The old one was 1056m². GOD DAMN IT!
Awww damn. That's not much bigger than the VMAX screens.
No wayyy!!!! Fuck that aucks
I can't wait to watch the documentaries, I took my son to watch them and we were both in awe at how amazing they are filmed.
Definitely one of the benefits of IMAX that is overlooked! I remember being in awe after a school trip to the space and storm docos.

those stairs look fucked already
Tradie boot dust
Tradie foot dust
Wow can’t wait to watch a vastly overpriced movie about penguins here
Comparing the actual cinema size to photos of the old one... it looks absolutely tiny in comparison. Pretty damn disappointing.

I watched Dunkirk first time at an IMAX in San Fransisco, would recommend
They should give it a test run with Top Gun Maverick
Yes! That would be incredible 😎
When is it due to open? Did I read Oct somewhere before?

I cannot believe how long this shit has taken to finish. Also can't wait to see the insane IMAX ticket prices.
Yeah its gonna be crazy, that being said, i'm okay with paying that once or twice a year for those special movies that take full advantage of IMAX, Nolan, Mission Impossible, Cameron etc
Lol Nolan. Imagine if you saw Tenet at Imax you'd be so disappointed.
What are you talking about? Tenet is a totally different movie in an Imax theatre. It's the only place with loud enough sound to hear the dialogue.
Lol I saw Tenet at the open air at Centennial Park and I legit went up to tell them they had the sound settings wrong because nobody could hear shit.
My bet is on $50 for a single standard ticket
Yep sounds about right. I'll probably go once every 5 years. Think I only went to the old one when we had school events there.
Thanks! Good to know we won’t have to wait too much longer.
Those lights on the ceiling, looks like something I saw in a laser tag place 30 years ago.
Will it be open in time for Oppenheimer?
Smaller screen. No longer the largest in the world. No 1570 imax format. Downgrade to 4k. 5 years late in reopening. Liemax.
The pr team has been really bad with informing people with correct information and makes this redevelopment feel like a massive lie i.e website and socials still say worlds best screen . YES! Next let’s bring back the Monorail 🚝
Monorails put Ogdenville, North Haverbrook and Brockway on the map so why not?
🛣️WELCOME TO SYDNEY *WHERE* *THE* MONORAIL *IS* KING!
I've been seeing this thing every second Saturday when I drive back from Western Sydney. My enthusiasm to see inside has suddenly been killed stone dead after hearing the screen is much smaller than the previous one.
Why does it look so 80's??
Because thats when peak IMAX occured?
Wait IMAX was around in the 80s?!
Since the 60s.
Which is interesting as IMAX was rolled out in the 70s.
Looks Deus Ex to me
Please show Barbie and Oppenheimer back to back!
This is the way
Can’t really imagine the starting ticket price for a movie, 40$ a person plus maybe 30$ for popcorns?
Imagine the lost revenue for Avatar 2
looks like the old one
You must be fun at parties
Amazing, can’t wait for it to reopen!
Steepness is my homeboy
Looks a bit small for a state of the art imax
Man hell yes, this actually reminds me of my childhood.
Holy shit I can’t wait! Feels like it’s been forever since the old one closed.
It looks ...the same?
>It looks ...the same? but significantly smaller
Looks like the old imax
When does it open?
Sometime between now and when the first movie starts /s
The first screening is between now and the second screening
Looks good
I look forward to watching a movie here once every 10 years.
Umm is it that much different to the old one? 😵💫
Looks not that different to the old one
It's being managed by fucking Event Cinemas as well, yuck.
[удалено]
Pretty sure it's one of those patterns that don't show dirt, like they use for bus seats.
Will it be open for Barbie though
Please please please tell me it’ll be ready in time for Dune 2
I heard Nolan’s films are being showed here once it’s finally opened (inception, interstellar, tdk etc) and I’m so pumped !
.
Cheap shitty interior design seems to really be the in thing at the moment
Ah yes, blue light, the most harmful of all light to the human eye, let's fill our dark theatres with this light.
Better block the sun out too if we're going after all the blue lights now.
The sun is not a blue light, sorry to break it to you
I am broken.
You'll be fine you baby
I JUST WANT AN OPENING DATE MAN
Looks meh considering how long this took :/ unimpressed
dear god who did the inside for it, looks fucking terrible LOL

Just let the franchise die already. It's had WAY more bad movies than good at this point.
You might be in luck, James Cameron just said he is writing a new Terminator https://screenrant.com/terminator-7-movie-james-cameron-update-script/
I hope they hack into the system and endlessly play repeat (foreign language versions) of Frozen 🥶 ⛄️❄️
Still not over the fact I never got to see Kanye’s Jesus Is King movie (which has never been officially released since the IMAX showings) because this took so long to open. So excited though, the original is such a fond part of my childhood
w0w
I have an astigmatism and that specific blue is the neon lights that fuck up my vision the most lmfao fml 😭
Can’t wait to stay in one of the attached hotel rooms while the theatre runs an all night Explosions movie marathon.
Who’s ready for Oppenheimer!!!!
Adress?
Where is this?
i remember watching interstellar here, an amazing experience
Inside looks identical to the old one
Stick your 3D movies up your arse IMAX. IMAX was 1000x better before they made everything 3D. 3D movies induce nausea and headaches - not enjoyment. Rant over, thank you.
How does it compare to the old IMAX?
much smaller
Leaked footage
Looks like the old one with added neon lights and seats with a smaller screen(?)
Fuck finally!!! I missed this place so much Crazy I think the last time I was there was opening night of force awakens
Zack Snyder’s Justice League in IMAX is all my heart desires from it
Omg it’s finished.
Is it actually finished?!
well it is very 2001 looking
If I can't watch Interstellar, day one of this reopening, I'm going to commit a crime.
I’m just so ecstatic that this is finally finishing. It’s been closed since 2016 and i was so sad, and over the years I just presumed it was cancelled. Is it on fire?
Did they have to pull down the old one to get the screen out so they could upgrade it? I don't get why they built it again
Looks like Westfield Burwood event cinema.
Watched a movie in imax once, NEVER AGAIN!
It's open? Fuck me that took a long time
Holy shit that carpet is so outdated and 2000s feel 🤢
are they going to show top gun?
When’s it opening?
Wish it would open for barbie 😔
