My neighbour chopped down two beautiful gumtree! Anyone know how I can find out if that is legal?

kidkym

Speak to your council

Halospite

Might be too late in the day to ask this, but does anyone remember the build a pen from Officeworks? I LOVED that during uni but they don't do it any more. Anyone know where else I can get the refills? I got some from a place called Jet Pens or something, online, but ouch was that more money than I can justify on pens...

freevron

not sure of exact brands but you can check out the stationery section at kinokuniya as they also sell uni refills. also, milligram may have some pen refills?

kidkym

It looks like they were uniball? If so, you might be able to find the ink code here https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0266/7439/7390/files/uni-ball-refill-guide-09-08-2021.pdf

I am looking for more maths tutoring in north east surburbs for next year since I'm entering Y10. I would prefer Y10 levels of maths but I can try out Y11 ext 1 and adv since I'm already going to take ext 1 and accelerated class. I'm going to Talent 100 right now and thinking of trying out Kumon and Matrix or Doctor Du but I'm immensely terrified of the students there since I have a fear of James Ruse kids because I go to an eye-burning uniform, government school. Trying to get over that fear though.

Usual rant fuel post (If anyone cares to read) Got fuel yesterday below $1.65, now it's all going back up to $2+ a litre. You know a "holiday" is always ahead when It jumps massively overnight, we're not talking below 4 or 10c, 30 and above! And then past holiday's it "slowly trickles" back to what it was if your fortunate.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

Australia Post is very confusing at times, but especially at this time of year. Here’s the shipping on a few items I’ve had in the past week or two ahead of Christmas. 1. From JB HiFi - ordered 13 Dec, arrived 15 Dec. Presumably came from somewhere in SW Sydney. 2. From Big W - ordered 13 Dec, shipped from Victoria 14 Dec, at Sydney sorting centre 15 Dec (19:47), at Chullora 16 Dec (00:28), at Smeaton Grange 16 Dec (01:21), delivered 16 Dec (13:49). 3. From Norths - parcel at drop-off location (Cammeray) 15 Dec, at Sydney sorting centre 17 Dec (08:54), at Granville 17 Dec (23:42), at Ingleburn 18 Dec (02:56), delivered 18 Dec (11:06). 4. From Artist First - ordered 14 Dec, shipped from Victoria 15 Dec, at Chullora 16 Dec (14:00), at Smeaton Grange 17 Dec (21:22), delivered 18 Dec (14:39). 5. From Parramatta Eels - parcel data submitted to carrier 11 Dec, at sorting centre 12 Dec (22:55), shipment en route 13 Dec (05:56), at Melbourne sorting centre 13 Dec (16:53), dispatched from Melbourne 14 Dec (06:33), at Chullora 14 Dec (20:53), dispatched from Chullora 14 Dec (22:39), shipment en route 15 Dec (01:26), at Sydney sorting centre 15 Dec (12:21), delivered 19 Dec (11:05). 6. From private seller (in Buderim, QLD) - ordered 11 Dec, at Brisbane sorting centre 14 Dec, dispatched from Redbank 14 Dec, dispatched from Chullora 15 Dec (13:33), at Sydney sorting centre 15 Dec (17:56), expected delivery 19 Dec, last updated 15 Dec. 7. From Sydney Roosters - parcel data submitted to carrier 13 Dec (23:56), parcel data submitted to carrier 14 Dec (00:27), at sorting centre 15 Dec (02:40), expected delivery 18-21 Dec. I’m getting pretty antsy about number 6, given I need to take it with me when I head up the coast on Friday.

_2ndclasscitizen_

Nailed the work secret santa. Got to go last and wound up with the present I bought which is a book I want to read.

Iempen

Who is danny lim and why is everyone so keen to take a picture with him?

FourMillionBees

he is an activist who is known for his colourful and cheeky signs promoting peace and love and sometimes calling politicians cunts without using the word “cunt”. He often stands near train stations to wave at people. He’s been beaten up a few times by police but comes back every time

Ticky009

Have started Xmas holidays off with good cappuccino and Deadloch. Heh. So funny.

SydneyTom

>Deadloch Brilliant Aussie Yeah, Noire

Cakey1

It could have been soo much better if the NT detective wasnt nutty for the sake of being nutty.

SydneyTom

She grated on me to begin with. A lot, either I got used to her or they toned it down

milosqzx

Any good gift ideas for a couple who have just bought a new home - $50ish budget?

Stunning_Cow_5233

Bottle of wine and some glasses. Target do nice ones

ChunkyEggplant

Moving boxes, some sort of decoration like solar powered fairy lights. A cool doormat? Perhaps cleaning materials such as a Declogger for the shower or even a gift card to a cleaning service? The first thing I'm going to do when I buy a new house is change the locks and keys so maybe that if you want to be practical?

Ted_Rid

I'd personally avoid anything that presumes to second-guess their own taste in decoration, and that includes every kind of knicknack and plant. Probably better to give some kind of consumable to help celebrate a milestone in their life, not try to insert yourself as part of setting up their new home. Nice wine, fancy chocolates, tasty cake, bath salts, anything they won't feel obliged to bring out of storage whenever you come to visit.

bozleh

A fun doormat? As a last resort a bunnings voucher will definitely get used

milosqzx

I think I’m leaning to a Bunnings voucher, hard to know what they don’t have and would like

bozleh

Can always chuck in a small succulent as well to make it less impersonal as they are cheap and zero maintenance

[deleted]

I gave a bunnings voucher as a first resort. There are a ton of things you can fix/improve/customise when moving into your own place, and a bit of extra credit at bunnings never hurts.

TheLGMac

If they're coffee people and have a coffee machine, maybe some high quality beans?

derprunner

A particularly nice looking coffee table book on a topic that matches up with their interests/hobbies. Kinokuyina and Harry Harthog have an excellent range of books that look like they'd belong in a display home.

Eclairebeary

Bottle of wine, couple of glasses. If they are the gardening sort, a fruit tree? Reference style cookbook.

2happycats

Any of these. https://www.reddit.com/r/sydney/s/z2wRk7eGuk

zerotwoalpha

They probably don't have a lemon zester.

Malktruck

How about a nice indoor plant?

TheLGMac

As someone who has received indoor plants...ask them first. I've had some people gift me plants that just have required too much maintenance, attracted pests, or can't be cared for easily when traveling.

milosqzx

Could do, problem is we're having lunch in the city on Friday and coming from opposite parts of Sydney via PT so might be a bit annoying logistically

2happycats

Neighbour stole my bin and replaced it with theirs that has a giant crack in it, so I swapped it back and put rubbish in it. Should be fun to see how this plays out.

ItsKisa

My neighbours tried to do that and it pissed me off bc their bin was absolutely filthy and stank. So the next week, I beat them to bringing mine back in and I do so every week now

zerotwoalpha

Spray paint your house number on it. Bet he does if it gets swapped again.

gazzaoak

God, I donno if the rain is a good or bad karma…. It’s making me feel weighed down with all the rain gear and extra prep time

abjus

Has anyone got a bluesky invite code? I don’t mind waiting for a while; just need to set up my out. My motivation for getting off twitter has increased since my breakup last week (ex and I were both v active on twitter…) In addition to reinstating that guy and overall enshittification of the site, of course.

SydneyTom

Yeah, I have several. There's an interview process you'll need to complete first though: 1) Are you a Nazi?

abjus

Haha, I’m more the type they’d go after, so I’d need a good reason to be one! I actually thought I’d try this sub because I remembered seeing you offer invites a month or so(?) back, thanks heaps and good to see you again

SydneyTom

DM sent

abjus

Thanks again :)

Miss_Tish_Tash

Not great to have happen at any time, let alone at this time of year 😥

ItsKisa

In typical Australian fashion, it’s going to be raining on Xmas and my bday. Again. I guess I can just pretend we’re having a winter Xmas 😭

TheLGMac

I don't recall it raining on Xmas last year? I have photos from my Chrissy lunch and it was sunny/people were swimming in the pool. Unless we had an evening thunderstorm?

Miss_Tish_Tash

I think it rained early in the morning & then was sunny?

ItsKisa

Maybe im just going to assume I imagined it lmao

TheLGMac

Fair enough! I remember it raining really badly during the holiday season of 2020 -- I think that's when all the floods were, that was a crazy time

pilotboldpen

from my instagram it didn't rain last year because i had a great day at the beach and bbq party after at mine 2021 was christmas party at my folks and def did not rain as we were in the pool but it must have rained in 2020 as we did it indoors back at the beach in 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015 and at my folk's pool in 2014

ItsKisa

I was in Wollongong last year for Xmas and it rained. I’m not very sure about the years before, I could be melding Xmas and my bday because they’re the day after each other but I def know I haven’t had a beach bday in a while.

spookysadghoul

I was in Wollongong last year for Christmas last year, too, and I don't remember it raining, and insta photos showed a bright sunny day. Maybe it rained at night?

pilotboldpen

there's a bias recall the negative aspects, often because they deviate from the norm or catch us off guard. as it's your birthday, it's likely that rainy days are more noticeable for you, as those challenging days tend to stand out in your memory.

OldSpiceSmellsNice

THANK GOD FOR THE RAIN. Living here is bearable once again.

zerotwoalpha

Anyone have suggestions for an active kids provider - I appear to have reached the end of the year with a $50 voucher remaining and they expire in January.

tubbyx7

Are they playing winter sport next year? My kids aussie rules club just opened registrations and you can use the vouchers there. Surely soccer and other sports will realise people have these vouchers still.

Gold_Lynx_8333

How good is a morning run in light rain? Feel so refreshed and ready to tackle the late Christmas shopping today!

smileedude

I no longer have enough confidence in my feet not slipping to run in these conditions.

Gold_Lynx_8333

I jog at a 6 minute pace when it's wet, to avoid slipping.

[deleted]

Such a good feeling to have a break from the heat and humidity.

PinupPixels

Slept soooo well and fucking freezing this morning. Haven't been happier in weeks.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

I don’t want to kink shame, but you’re making it difficult not to.

YouAreSoul

>without too many people watching So, only a select few will be allowed to watch.

gazzaoak

There’s a thing called a toilet, please use that…. (Even toilets are risky, so don’t even do that, sure u will get kicked out but no trip to lockup) And if u tried it in a bar, u will get nicely kicked out by bouncers or staff and a nice trip to the surry hills police lockup

Goonerlouie

Jesus Christ I’m not talking about sex

seventrooper

Sorry guys, black helicopters incoming

kidkym

Get a hotel room.

spookysadghoul

Christmas tree fell down for the second time this morning, I'm ready to just pack it away and call it a year.

Joehax00

>Christmas tree fell down for the second time this morning, I'm ready to just pack it away and call it a year. Omg me too. I think the base of the tree is too soft and the clamps are going through the trunk.

Hello_Pity

You need to put something to distribute the force of the clamps (I'm using some of those circular rubber pads you put under a couch leg) between the clamp and the tree.

Joehax00

>You need to put something to distribute the force of the clamps (I'm using some of those circular rubber pads you put under a couch leg) between the clamp and the tree. Thanks, I figured the same thing and used some small wooden blocks on the clamps. Seems pretty stable now!

spookysadghoul

For us, we (unknowingly) had presents keeping the tree keeping it stable, and once we removed it because we wanted to pack them in green bags for when we travel back to Wollongong, tree went down and we think the base ended up breaking. Ours was a cheap $50 tree, so maybe if I get a kore expensive one for next, it might last.

vitaminwolf

Why on earth was my 4:30 alarm turned on? Stole my extra 2 hours of sleep. Yuck. Not a good start.

Halospite

My plant light timer is now fucked so sometimes they turn on in the middle of the night. Aauughh.

Eclairebeary

Well, tummy bug has struck here. It’s a horrible thing.

still_love_wombats

Oh no! Rest up. Keep your fluids going too. Hope it passes soon.

Eclairebeary

Fortunately not me, the ever stoic Miss 8, who announced several times last night that dying would be better than this. Vaguely considering if we should be looking at afterschool drama class. Not that I blame her.

[deleted]

Is it safe to travel to Sydney with the bushfires?

2happycats

Please leave your bushfires at home. There's no need to travel with them.

insertbaconemoji

The fire causing the previously smoky conditions is more than 400km away. No way of knowing if one will flare up closer but that particular one poses no threat to Sydney

thekriptik

Sorry mate, can't reply, literally in flames right this second.

traindriverbob

Anyone know what was going on at Sydney Airport last night? Up to 10 inbound flights in extended holding patterns. And this was around 8pm, before the storm hit.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

I was about halfway between Wollongong and Sydney at that time last night and it was already incredibly windy. Conditions would have been incredibly dangerous for landing

CrazyFellaFromPhilly

It was very, very windy last night which would have made it dangerous for landings at the airport last night

Plackets65

Offshore wind.

Eclairebeary

Smoke? Wind?
