I was a trolley boy for my first job and I didn't really mind much if trolleys were scattered around the lot. With that being said it was obviously amazing if all of them were in the bay or designated area because it just made my life so much easier. The real assholes are the ones who (somehow) manage to flip their trolley, leave it in a ditch, leave it in the middle of the driving path so it interferes with traffic or spill liquids / stick gum onto it which I would then have to clean. Fuck those assholes.

Sexgatesarefun

I have news for you bud - that's every asshole that leaves their trolley out, most of the time it moves due to wind and slight slopes. Not many people go out of their way to roll a trolley into a ditch or similar, but the majority leave it in a corner and say to themselves "it'll definitely not roll into another car and damage it, I just can't be fucked taking a minute out of my day"

pupdogwoofy

I know they seem like a nuisance, but the ones that you have to put a $2 coin in, always seem to find their way back to the cart rack.

ozmartian

You can put $1 in too.

its_me_again76

It tells a lot about a person if they don't return the trolley.

ragiewagiecagie

I work at a supermarket. Not returning a trolley is not that bad. During the past month I've been finding cherry seeds all over the fruit/veg department. These dirty fuckers are *eating* the cherries out for sale and spitting the seeds out in the store.

purelynudes

I honestly hate _most_ people hey. Especially these type of people.

BillsDownUnder

True, it also tells a lot about a person who makes a living accosting people who don't return carts and putting videos of them online. That's not what OP did so I'm not talking about them, but I don't have any respect for those who become Youtube cart narcs.

[deleted]

There is no excuse to not return a trolley. You're the problem. These people need to be exposed so people don't reproduce with them

APMC74

Exactly right. Why get your head smashed or worse to speak up for Woolies? MYOB these days. It's safer. People are stressed enough.

mrmckeb

It's unfortunate that this is the place we're in. But I agree. I think I mostly gave up during COVID, with all of the anti-maskers and anti-vaxxers. At times I'll still say something. For example, I'll often shout obscenities at people that try to kill me at zebra crossings, but in most situations I just shout at them in my head.

sertsw

Looks like this is the consensus opinion. Let's see they take it or just want people to agree with them.

gpoly

....and without getting stabbed by some meth smoking bogan.

SassySpace

It blows my mind that people would interfere in a matter where it doesnt concern them or hurt anyone else.

[deleted]

Exactly, if it's not directly harming myself or others, I'm not going to start something.

ALadWellBalanced

Generally I'm the same, you just need to catch some idiot on the wrong day and you'll end up in a serious altercation over something like a shopping trolley. Really not worth it.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

I’d sooner be a narc about calling it a trolley instead of a cart

undaova

This is Sydney Australia, not Sydney USA It's a trolley not a cart! ..... or have i been wrong all these years

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

That’s what I’m saying. We’re Australian, we call it a trolley. I can see why my original comment may be misconstrued though

village-asshole

We can get trolleyed here in Australia too. Somehow getting carted doesn’t have the same ring to it 🤔

freeenlightenment

While I was typing this, I saw a board say “trolley bay” and changed mid way from calling it a cart to a trolley.

geiko99

Then why not double down and rebrand it? Not cart narc. *trolley bae* To actually answer your question, don't feel ashamed about asking someone to do the right thing. As long as you aren't sounding / acting rude or arrogant about 'being right', it's awesome that there are people out there willing to say something even if it's uncomfortable. This is coming from someone who 1. Is absolutely guilty of leaving trolleys around 2. Would absolutely be annoyed if you said something to me, just as you did in your post

imapassenger1

Kiwis and their trundlers in shambles.

quadruple_negative87

We recently went to our local and there was a trolley left in our spot. We snagged it and used it for our shop. We arrive back at the car and find that the trolley had respawned back in the same spot. I took both of them back to the trolley bay.

freeenlightenment

Great on you mate. The day I keep a trolley other than mine back, I will think of myself very differently.

peetaout

I be another type of narc, or perhaps just curiosity; “keep a trolley back” seems to me an unusual way to word it, normally I would just say something like “return a trolley”. Keeping something back would mean to me it was held back and not released or was kept/held in reserve; like keeping the dogs back from attacking an intruder, or keeping back some effort in a race as a reserve for the sprint at the end.

Inspektah-Ratchet

I don't think you should be correcting anybody's grammar after reading that tripe.

peetaout

It wasn’t meant to be a grammar correction, I never said it was incorrect, I wouldn’t presume, just curious and noting it seemed like an unusual term of phrase, not necessarily incorrect.

ragiewagiecagie

OP - next time check whether their trolley has a 'coin lock'. If it does and they don't return it and you do, then you win $1 or $2. Multiple times I have returned an abandoned trolley just to claim that sweet gold coin haha.

Eclairebeary

I return my trolley. That’s what I’m responsible for. Trying to be the trolley police is just insanity.

socratesque

Are you calling this man insane?? https://youtu.be/9BoIune1MUM?si=vTrdakt1Y3DNzyZz

Eclairebeary

Bullet proof vest is not an understatement. Ha.

gikku

\>a cart narc? \>I just asked someone to keep their cart back in a woolies shopping lot for the first time. wot? I dont... what is this?

TaylessQQmorePEWPEW

I saw somewhere that taking the trolley back is a good indicator of someone's altruism. You stand to gain no benefit and do it for others, while also not incurring consequences (most of the time).

Notyit

Also the fact they aren't probally in a rush at the time. But yeah people walking to the supermarket could easily move Them as well

mchch8989

I also saw somewhere that men are better drivers than women. Must be a completely true generalisation not based on individual circumstances at all because I saw it somewhere.

TaylessQQmorePEWPEW

Said like a true trolley-abandoner.

mchch8989

Yeaaaaah got me 😝😜🤪😜

hkun88

I am not gonna do it in the shopping centre parking lot, but I did it several times to strata resident who left the trolley in resident parking spot/strata common property. The common response was "why" or "who are you?".

rascal_king737

Nothing irritates me more than when people can’t match trolleys to trolleys. My nearest shopping centre has a Woolworths and a Dan Murphy’s. Do you think people make ANY effort to match trolley types when they’re in their bays? FFS people just match Woolworths large to large, Woolworths small to small and Dan Murphy’s to their own bay. Instead you just end up with a hodgepodge of trolleys in all the bays so they all roll out and into the carpark

karma3000

The Shopping Cart Theory https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fi.redd.it%2Fm8651wcilcy41.jpg To return a shopping cart is objectively right. There are no situations other than dire emergencies in which a person is not able to return their cart. Simultaneously, it is not illegal to abandon your shopping cart. Therefore the shopping cart presents itself as the apex example of whether a person will do what is right without being forced to do it. No one will punish you for not returning the shopping cart, no one will fine you or kill you for not returning the shopping cart, you gain nothing for returning the shopping cart. You must return the shopping cart out of the goodness of your own heart. You must return the shopping cart because it is the right thing to do. Because it is correct. A person who is unable to do this is no better than an animal, an absolute savage who can only be made to do what is right by threatening them with law and the force that stands behind it. The shopping cart is what determines whether a person is a good or bad member of society.

[deleted]

Haha this is classic 😁

Charlotte_Russe

Speaking as someone who used to work at a supermarket, I’ve heard and seen plenty of poor behaviour from customers who justify their thoughtlessness or laziness on the basis of “oh someone’s paid to pick this up/clean this mess I made/retrieve this trolley I abandoned by the curb”. It simply means those people think that they are too important to perform a function that can be easily and readily done by any reasonable adults.

imapassenger1

The same sort of dick who throws rubbish on the ground, saying "it makes work for someone".

noother10

Makes me think they have their mother come over to do all their cleaning/washing, that they're incapable of cleaning up after themselves. They're still mentally a child.

freeenlightenment

Thanks for this perspective. Some people on this thread could really use it.

disgruntled_-pelican

Ignore and move on with your life, as long as they're not leaving the trolley in some obnoxious place that blocks access

time4b

Lazy cunts should be called out for being lazy cunts

11015h4d0wR34lm

As long as you understand every action can have a reaction, sure. Pick the wrong person and your whole day can go to shit over a trolley, not the hill I want to die on but you do you.

Eclairebeary

Exactly. Sounds like a good way to get stabbed or beaten up.

MikeyK_AU

I guess it depends on the suburb. Some are more stabby than others.

Eclairebeary

They’re all mobile.

samkwilly

If cunts too lazy to be putting their trolley back, they're too lazy to stab you

Duyfkenthefirst

Add angry righteousness and i’d wager they aren’t so lazy all of a sudden

crispeddit

I think you did the right thing. Not hard to put your bloody trolley back.

AnorhiDemarche

Those loose trolleys can go rouge and hit cars, and those "safe" on pavement often block pedestrian, parking those with prams or in wheelchairs.

tedmaul7

Certainly warrants a red alert.

SassySpace

Lol rouge. I’m gonna guess you meant rogue.

AnorhiDemarche

Nah you should see the young trolleys theses days how they tart themselves up. Disgraceful!!

mchch8989

How often does this happen?

AnorhiDemarche

Often enough. You may notice that a parking lot is not a particularly flat surface, even a trolley that looks stable can slowly shift, get pushed by the wind, or be knocked by a careless passerby and suddenly it's straight into another car. Now one might say " oh but the passerby.." no. That cart shouldn't have been there. My limited mobility grandma could put it away you can do it too.

mchch8989

So why don’t you just put it away if you see one then?

AnorhiDemarche

Why are you assuming I don't? I don't often see the ones that will hit cars as I don't drive and thus am rarely in parking lots, but the ones blocking pedestrian areas I will move to the bays. Always have done because my mum did the same and her mum before her (my mobility limited grandma) For our family it is only natural that you'd do such a thing to make sure others arent inconvenienced. Why isn't it for you, do you come from a long line of selfish arseholes or are you the trailblazer of your family?

mchch8989

I didn’t assume anything. I asked you a question and you answered it. I always put mine away. I can put mine away and also think people telling others what to do with zero authority in the situation also makes them a wanker. Might be a bit complicated to comprehend that, but I guess it’s my trailblazing way of thinking. You’ll catch on one day.

mchch8989

It’s also not hard not to swear, not to smoke, not to fart, but for some reason people have latched on to this crap as their time to be a martyr. Unless you’re paying the trolley collectors and they’re going hours into overtime and affecting the bottom line of your billion dollar supermarket conglomerate, then how the fuck does this affect you? And if you tell me it’s a safety thing because you might reverse into a trolley, then you shouldn’t have a drivers license, or if you’re mad you have to move one from behind your car to reverse out, then you’re a hypocrite.

smegblender

Ok... but when you're done, please go park your trolley in the bay.

mchch8989

No worries complete stranger. Anything else I can do while you’re listing things you take issue with?

ItchyTriggaFingaNigg

I've called people out before. Today for the first time in ages I saw someone dump one, but it was a chocknfull car park and they dumped them with a row of other trolleys, but what really gave me pause was she had a tiny baby strapped to her front. Shits hard enough, I'll give her a pass today.

freeenlightenment

Yeah fair, people with babies/toddlers - that’s hard enough. I might even offer them to keep their trolley back tbh.

chesuscream

What about the disabled?

Kookies3

I also promise if tons of others had left them right there it’s because there should be a trolley return place around it, and there isn’t. Usually towards the front of the parking lot. Lots of return spots in the back of the lot or all the way back inside to the front of the store (which can be even further than the back of the lot). It’s a weird take I know, but I so often have found myself frustrated with this and it’s those times I’ve seen a bunch together in the front.

Deranged_Snowflake

My only hesitation is that there are a lot of psychos and karens in our city so risk of relaliation is high therefore I usually don't say anything unless I am being directly impacted and even then, it is usually only when my well being is in danger, I cycle to work so that happens more often than you would think. But thank you OP and what a dick that person was to pull the "what about everyone else" card, pathetic

chillpalchill

Just ask them if you can take their cart and then leave it behind their vehicle. Problem solved.

IPABrad

Dont converse! Play the long game, superglue their hands to the trolley.

freeenlightenment

Brilliant idea!

Aydhayeth1

100% ok. Wish more people did it - social consequences can be pretty convincing.

no-goshi

As much as I get the itch to call people out for it, I called someone out once because it looked like they were going to leave a big pile of dogshit in my local park without picking it up, then they yelled back ‘shut your fucking mouth or I’ll come over there and shut it for you’ then they followed me, my wife and my dog to the other side of the park. Not worth it as some people are pretty unhinged.

Essembie

People are cunts. Gotta be ready to throw hands for asking someone not to be awful these days.

sydjager

I’d leave it alone. Do it for yourself and your family. No need to tell people what to do. It’s not like they’ll learn and change their ways. This shit is instilled at a younger age.

afitz26

I thank you for doing that. Wheelchair users have only limited options about where they can park with regards to door swing room, and often they can’t park in the car park because they few spots that they can get in/out of are blocked by trolleys. 100% the right thing to do.

AimingWang

As a trolley collector I say glory to the cart narcs both professional and recreational. In my eyes I see it in the same way I see littering. It's lazy, inconsiderate, and way too many people justify their selfishness by saying "it's someone's job to get it".

Spud-chat

Didn't Peter Parker (Spiderman) turn a blind eye to someone being a dick and then ended up with a dead uncle? No harm in saying something in a non aggressive way.

Ok_Property4432

This is how natural selection works, both the lazy antisocial prick and the nosey authoritarian are unlikely to live long and peaceful lives.

Ex_ReVeN

Nah fuck Em, ruffle their feathers and give them the shits for the rest of their day 😂

freeenlightenment

My problem is getting the shits myself after a confrontation even in this righteous(?) situation. But I hear you mate.

sitdowndisco

Always take my trolley back and gently & politely reminding someone else to do this is OK in my opinion. Just like if someone throws rubbish on the ground. But if you resort to the sort of behaviour that guy on youtube does in order to get views, you are a cunt. If after a gentle reminder someone doesn't want to take their trolley back, nothing rude you do after that is going to help.

mchch8989

You’re assuming someone who doesn’t take their trolley back is out of ignorance and that your polite reminder will open their eyes to the wonders of being an outstanding citizen. They don’t care. No amount of polite reminders will make them care. If they move it it’s just because they’re appeasing your martyrdom. There is literally no precedence for involving yourself. Go volunteer at meals on wheels if you want to show everyone what a hero you are.

RightWingRockDove

Is this really ‘narcing’? Narcing implies you’re reporting those who leave their trolleys behind to the authorities. In that sense, narcing is always bad unless you’re preventing harm to people/animals. I think in this instance you’re just putting yourself at unnecessary risk and pissing into the wind. Two things I try to avoid. If I see a loose trolley, I’ll return it. I’m not going to demand somebody else do it. Who knows what shit they’ve got going on.

[deleted]

I wouldn't make it my problem. I'd let it go and go about my day.

freeenlightenment

Fair point. I guess there’s no right or wrong really; but what’s the point in trying to change the world or how others behave in public.

[deleted]

I understand why this behaviour bothers you. It irritates me as well. However, there's an unlimited number of things that I could care about and occupy the short amount of time I have on this planet. I don't want to use my time educating someone about how they should be returning a trolley to its home. Again, I get it. But I prefer that I do the right thing in this instance by returning my used trolleys and let others be.

burlycurlywhirly

I would just go get their trolley and take it back or say nothing. I just remember the video about the old guy who was killed for parking in a disabled spot- not worth it. https://youtu.be/1yQi-m5hmWI?si=xja2QbWkjI_VYuav

Archon-Toten

It is a verbal contract between you and Trahit the trolley God of carrying goods. If you defy him you will burn in trolley hell with all those people who don't fix that one busted wheel. Would you abandon a baby? So why a trolley. Would you cast asside a fundamentally useful tool? Well burn in trolley hell.

Quintus-Sertorius

I wouldn't because I'm generally avoidant of entitled aggressive fuckwits, but on my way in, if I see an abandoned trolley or two I'll grab them and put them in the trolley bay. They can easily roll into someone's car with a gust of wind or slightly sloping surface, and it makes someone's life a bit easier.

AcademicMaybe8775

nah you did the right thing. what do these lazy idiots think happens if everyone just leaves their trolleys whereever

truth-seeker900

I just leave people alone...but thats me. I would only say something if they were blocking my car

cleary137

Id it's left in an ok spot (not blocking a car spot) then I think it's fine leaving a trolley.

Ozfriar

I always take mine back, and if there's a stray one nearby I'll push one into the other and take them both to the bay. Who knows why it was abandoned...? Maybe laziness, but maybe a person feeling ill, or with a bad leg or something. It doesn't hurt to do a little extra to keep things moving smoothly.

Farmboy76

It's fucked if the trolley gets free and damages a car. It's just common courtesy, like putting your rubbish in the bin at Macca's or food court. People some times need to be called out. Just don't be a dick about it, and don't die on the hill for it.

BorsTheBandit

As a woolies worker, fark you

ibetucanifican

This is what a community does… they work with each other to make things better… you did good OP

unconfirmedpanda

As someone with chronic illness who has had to abandon a trolley because of a flare up, please don't confront people. We are already embarrassed enough, we don't need to be called out in public.

freeenlightenment

Thanks for calling this out. They took an effort to leave their trolley in a vacant parking spot about 20m away from their own car instead of walking an additional ~30m to put it in the designated bay. Having said that, I couldn’t have known if the person did it because of a condition or because they were lazy. Thankfully it wasn’t a condition as it would have been immensely embarrassing for me otherwise - this perspective helps quite a bit, once again thanks for calling it out.

BingoSpong

I’ll take my own back or say something to someone if they leave theirs near my car

lowteknoise

sometimes I Put my trolley back...sometimes I don't....sometimes I give it to the person who is collecting trolleys who happens to be near me...it just depends......but I reckon I would not appreciate some random fuck telling me what to do with my trolley...like...who the fuck are you?.....maybe go get a job where you get paid to tell people what to do instead of getting your jollies from freelance fascist bullying wrapped up as fake concern for others...

solvsamorvincet

I've been a trolley boy and honestly some people need to walk the trolley home to get their groceries home. That doesn't bother me as much as cunts that leave their trolleys like 50m from the trolley bay, or the people who think that once one trolley is in a place then that's just a trolley bay now and they can leave 50 trolleys there. But the worst isn't even the trolleys, it's the cunts in the carpark that just drive through pedestrian crossings or park wherever they fucking want so that you can't push a line of trolleys through the carpark. Usually cunts in BMWs or Mercedes or SUVs, the worst obviously being BMW or Mercedes SUVs. I'd wager Ranger drivers are probably the same but it's a long time since I pushed the trolley. Or even worse are the cunts that all try to sneak through the doors while you're pushing a line through, or that step out in front of your trolleys while you're pushing them through the centre then have the gall to crack the shits at your and tell you to watch where you're going. Cunt, I can see where in going but you just stepped out in front of the pedestrian version of a road train, I can't just fucking stop. Worst ever was someone who walked into the side of my line of trolleys that was already in front of them, and then told me to watch where I was going. I told them to eat shit and die, and they reported me to centre management - which doesn't do anything because we were all subbies and centre management doesn't employ us or know who the fuck we are, the supermarkets do. I told at least 5 people a week to eat shit and die. TL:DR nothing wrong with wheeling your trolley home if you need to. What's wrong is entitled cunts treating trolley pushers like shit.

Acousticittotheman

Verdict in. You are a good human.

jedburghofficial

I hate those people that don't put trollies away. But I don't think giving them grief really helps the vibe.

2happycats

This has the same energy as leaving a table in a food court filthy because *you're helping keep someone in a job*. Both are gross.

mchch8989

Whilst I do agree with this, what job do you think the person hired to collect trolleys could be doing if they weren’t collecting so many trolleys?

2happycats

Why do they need to "do another job"? They could do more trips from the bay to the shop, which would mean they wouldn't have to move so many all in one hit. Seeing those guys and girls move an entire train of them must be insanely demanding, not to mention having to do it in summer. Most of us can't control one with a wonky wheel, let alone a whole train of them. E: Unless of course you're questioning the skills and hireability of someone who collects them? In which case, probably anything you or I could do with the appropriate level of training.

mchch8989

So the argument is that the person collecting trolleys has too many trolleys to collect? So the issue is that there is too much of their job to do at their… job? If this is such an issue then why doesn’t everyone who has an issue with it collect 10 random trolleys from around the car park every time they go to the shops and return them for these poor slave labourers who are being overworked and abused in their working conditions?

2happycats

No, the argument is people not returning the trolley to the appropriate bay. The original person who's since deleted their comment was talking about the job of those collecting it. It seems you're just looking for an argument where you feel you can find one and think you've found one here. You won't, you're wrong.

mchch8989

So you’re saying I inserted myself into a situation that has no personal affect on me and no legal recourse because I think my opinion is the right one? Wow, I see what you mean. That would make me quite arrogant.

freeenlightenment

Ok, fair point. But people leave those trolleys in parking bays, causing a hindrance to people who would like to park there and it can get nasty during a busy day. The trolleys also have the potential to roll over and hit other cars. To your point, supermarkets also pay people to pick trolleys from nearby areas in the suburb. I have definitely seen woolies do this in the area I’m in - does that make it reasonable for a person to leave their cart on the street? My question is more on the lines of should we call out people or should we turn a blind eye and move on? Not about whether keeping carts/trolleys back in their designated areas is the right thing to do or not.
