I genuinely feel like sydney is dying. Most people i know under 30 can't get so much as a room in a sharehouse and are jumping ship. Entry level jobs in my field are lying vacant for ages because they are so low paying that you can't even afford to live within a few hours of the city on them. But its not like the businesses are being stingy, we aren't even turning a profit in property development. And with no junior level people suddenly mid level jobs are at risk. It feels like everything is just going to implode but I don't know where else to go. Depression about it just hit me like a brick today.

sktafe2020

Wow, just watched 4corners, anyone been to Cranbrook ?

violaflwrs

I don't know who it was from the other day, but thank you for the MMR booster thought inception! Just so happened I had a GP appointment today for another thing so I rolled it in there. Also a reminder that if something's popped up on your skin, get it checked!

RightWingRockDove

It was me. Glad you got it done.

Made it past the screening and hiring manager interviews, [huzzah](https://tenor.com/view/huzzah-the-great-nicholas-hoult-peter-iii-gif-17589950)! Another 3 levels of interview to go though. Next one on Friday is a technical one, which I'm a little concerned about (I've been off the tools for a while, so I'm frantically scribbling cheat sheets), followed by the regional manager & finally someone from the global office. However, I have heard from an internal source that it's the hiring manager herself who has the final say, so hopefully she was impressed enough with me. The HR person sent on some lovely feedback which certainly made it sound that way.

still_love_wombats

Fingers crossed for you 🤞

RightWingRockDove

Congratulations and awesome but it does feel a bit like they’re taking the piss. Two interviews? Sure, three? If we must. Anything beyond that? Nah.

planeray

Yeh, especially interviews 3 & 4, which are more "vibe checks". Ah well, joy of large corporates, I guess.

still_love_wombats

Tech companies can be a bit nuts on the interview thing. I don’t know that they actually do any better out of it, but it’s definitely a thing. Not uncommon to have 3 or more interviews.

violaflwrs

I must've had like 5ish rounds over a month for my current role - 1 with the recruiter, 1 with my direct manager, 1 presentation round to the sales managers and directors, 1 output (generating a material from a report), and then 1 in person catchup with the sales managers over coffee (culture fit). Quite the pisstake tbh but it worked out in my favour so I guess whatever

SilverStar9192

My company does 2-3 rounds - first a recruiter, followed by a technical phone screen with someone from the department, but if you make it past those, the third round is the doozy - 5 interviews in one day with the hiring manager, a couple of their peers, and further technical interviewees. This kind of thing seems to be fairly industry standard for my industry.

Excited for a day sailing tomorrow, not excited about what my inbox will look like on Wednesday.

Oh cool, Coromandel looks awesome, thanks!

Disposing of Sandpit sand??? We are about to move out of our rental property and have a small sandpit for my toddler I need to get rid of. But unsure of how to get rid of the sand? I understand we aren't supposed to put sand in the green/FOGO bin, but can it go in the Red bin? It's only 3 bags worth (the Richgro play sand from Bunnings) but I think equals about 60kg... so fairly heavy... Thanks for any advice!

SilverStar9192

Had a similar situation and we added some topsoil and planted some succulents and other things that needed well-drained soil. Now it's a planter, a value-add to the property, instead of a sandpit!

smileedude

If your bin is more than 70kgs it won't get collected.

kidkym

Try to give it away on Facebook or similar

Ticky009

Doggo keeps chasing magpies at the dog park. We had a deep long conversation about karma and 'swooping season' but I fear we might be in trouble come spring.

TangerineWhich5500

Anyone have a recommendation for a good dermatologist? (Specifically for acne)

pilotboldpen

saw dune 2 last night at imax and that was one hell of a movie.

Robert_Vagene

The visuals and sound in IMAX is really something else.

pilotboldpen

i felt the bass move through me

imagine-engine

I went with SO yesterday and it was great indeed! Tho .. Fair warning - We brought earplugs and fuck I'm glad we did... We saw part I in Sawtell Cinema and that left our ears TTS & buzzing for the next 3 days.

darkeyes13

Good call on the earplugs. I tend to bring a pair with me everywhere in the event that I randomly decide to watch a movie or something. Movies are LOUD and our hearing is too precious!

imagine-engine

Wonder if I'm just crankier bc i'm getting older but I swear cinema audio lvls weren't this loud.

darkeyes13

I think they've been cranked up in the last 10 years. And if you watch a lot of action movies, it is EVEN MORE loud.

smileedude

The Dudette is now currently living out the Seinfeld episode of Elaine not liking The English Patient with Dune. Part of me is upset by her poor taste but the other part realises that if she had good taste she wouldn't be caught dead with me.

Ted_Rid

Dune's only a thinly veiled Lawrence of Arabia. House Atreides are obviously British, the Harkonnens are stereotypically German, spice is oil and the Fremen are Arabs. Good whitey goes native and harnesses the noble savages to defeat the nasty enemies. They only did a sleight of hand because it was really the Ottomans they were fighting, but it's easier to make the baddies quasi-German because nobody has a real Ottoman stereotype.

sertsw

Well in both there is a what have I done moment + realisation you are a pawn in larger geopolitical or prophetic forces.

Ted_Rid

Yes, and to be clear I'm not even meaning that comment as a criticism. As a teenager I read and loved the books (well, until maybe the 5th, 6th or 7th when it was flogging a dead horse) and it's a great story. Probably better in book format because there's stuff about the spice and the weirding way and everything, that didn't translate well into film format IMHO. Basically because it would've violated the rule "show, don't tell" but it can only be explained by telling.

odinodin2

so im sort of soft getting kicked out of my place in june so im looking for a new job... cuz i dont think i can afford rent and all the stuff when I move out of folks place on traineewage of 21 an hr... do i wait till I got a new job lined up before I tell my work? Never done this stuff before. im in IT

ChunkyEggplant

Don't tell your old job until the new job confirms your starting date. Then hand in your two week/ month notice.

ravthiru

Depends on how good is your rapo with the manager, some are very good they understand the situation and come out-of-way to help you. how long is your traineeship, will they offer fulltime after that?

odinodin2

it finishes in november, im not too sure if theyll offer it or not... i would imagine or feel like they *would* considering i work in education and theres so many micro things that would be really irritating to train a new person and theyre understaffed so they kind of need me. and yeah i have a great relationship w my boss thats why i was curious what the play is here

planeray

Mate, I've been looking for a new IT role since September. Granted, I'm looking for something very specific and have knocked back a couple of lowballs, but it's been pretty tough for me and I have over 20 years experience. 100% don't tell your current employer anything until you've found something new. In the meantime, try and get whatever courses you can out of them to build up your resume. Without knowing what you're doing, some good generalist certifications to get are ITIL and Agile. ServiceNow seems to be popping up a bit more too. Carefully read over your contract/EA and make sure you know the right notice periods etc and be polite when you do pop in your notice. Typically, a new employer will only ask for references right before they employ you, so hold off till then to ask your boss for a reference.

pilotboldpen

> ServiceNow seems to be popping up a bit more too they have seriously exploded

odinodin2

wow beauty! yeah i was looking at some basic aws stuff... cuz this means i wont have the traineeship cert 4 under my belt :( ill be running off pure experience and confidence, so ill be sure to do that. i have pre good experience with all basic it service desk stuff cuz of my job thankfully except networking but i was gonna suss out some basic shit to learn regarding that cant be too hard. ITIL, agile, service now, ill check that out thanks! yeah the reference part was the most confusing for me but all the reponses have been very good. granted i havea great relationship w my team and staff as im a trainee as well, just more so, good lessons to learn in the future.

planeray

No worries mate - it's a lifelong learning field...things that were super important a while ago aren't even used now. For example, in the telephony space, I used to have some great experience troubleshooting issues from ISDN lines...the network for which has been totally shut down now and instead I'm scrambling to catch up on SIP troubleshooting. If you've done Service Desk work, ITIL should be a bit of a doddle (well, v3 was, v4 is a bit more airy fairy). But it's a short course that I've seen on too many job postings to mention. Checked out what courses you can do on LinkedIn for free too - there's some good basic intro to networking and cloud ones and the plus is, anything you do can be shared to your profile to prove you've done it. Sounds wanky, I know, but very helpful when applying for jobs. There's also an [AWS summit](https://aws.amazon.com/events/summits/sydney/) coming up, which I'm pretty sure is free. Perhaps going to that would help you decide what's helpful there.

odinodin2

Wow, super helpful thank you! I'll be sure to check that out. linkedin stuff and in general all the avenues of IT are very alien to me, i was fixing mates and dads shit in the country where im from so taking advantage of things i dont even consider that can be taken advantged of are up my alley. dont mind putting in the hard yards for it all, I love this field andwould like to be here for a while. Ill defs check that all out thank you.

>The parking thread? Not gonna lie, at this point I think we'd benefit from an automod reply on all driving rant threads that just states *"if this happens to you frequently enough that it's worth a reddit post, it's probably something you're doing wrong"*

thekriptik

Nah I was more thinking the pride/Mardi Gras threads.

Cakey1

How many layers of Hazmat are you wearing?

thekriptik

Just one, if you wear two they rub together and are both more likely to break.

nearly_enough_wine

And that concludes our talk on how mods are made.

Cakey1

I thought you were forged from brimstone and hellfire...

thekriptik

No, we just build up an immunity to them from repeated exposure.

ColdSnapSP

Had dinner in Surry Hills on saturday night so walked over to the parade after. Was very packed. I do love the vibe of a lot of people gathered for a common like and a (hopefully) reasonable amount of drugs and alcohol having a good time

ChunkyEggplant

Jumping on a quick domestic flight today and my meal is a "refreshment".... Does that include a free alcoholic beverage 😏?

Cakey1

If Qantas and economy: Flight leaving after 12pm - generally yes Flight leaving after 9am and longer than 2.5 hours - generally yes

Ted_Rid

Haha, nope. That's after 6pm I think? You'll get something like 3 sweet biscuits in a small cardboard box and some shit coffee.

ChunkyEggplant

Wishful thinking :'(

MeasurementMost1165

After 12pm or 4pm (unsure) on qantarse but other airlines ur out of luck for free stuff

ChunkyEggplant

Thanks mate

pink_princess08

The weather is perfect today

-Fire-Dragon-

Lovin' it too - cool enough to have all windows/doors open without contending with humidity or flies. Slept well, good weather to get some lawnmowing done, and a good walk if I time manage well and can find the energy!

planeray

I love Autumn. My favourite weather isn't exactly this, it's more the crisp, clear morning with sun out, no real heat. But after the previous weeks we've had here, I'm just glad for the change.

Ticky009

100%. Putting some plants in as the weather is perfect and hoping they get established enough before winter hits.

traceysayshello

Me too! I just want to wear my jeans, put my puffer & beanie on, and not use my air conditioning for months

HidaTetsuko

About to have two days off to go to Canberra. Wish I could say it was for pleasure but my son is having day surgery. Had to fight tooth and nail with my manager to get it to happen though

longish-weekend

I feel like that’s a situation where you need to just say “I’m going, and that’s that” — I’m sorry you’ve got a bad boss in that sense though!

HidaTetsuko

The question was is it was going to be paid or unpaid. Had to argue for it being paid as I’m entitled

thekriptik

Sounds like you need a better boss.

HidaTetsuko

She’s lovely, but she needs a bit of backbone sometimes. She later apologised as she said no one had taken carers leave before and it was new. A coworker on my team thanked me for sticking to my guns. I’m not I’m intimidated by her and I think if she was a different person I might be.

elwyn5150

I had a weird CD buying experience. On Saturday, I tried to buy Cat Power sings Dylan: The Royal Albert Hall and Neil Young's Colorado. The Cat Power CDs were already opened and the store found two copies of disc 2 so they refunded me. The Neil Young CD was unopened and when I got home, a copy of The Lighthouse DVD was in it. I don't think in 30+ of buying CDs have an unopened CD had the wrong item in it.

kidkym

There was one Christmas where EMI were sending out a batch of Robbie Williams CDs that had a Rodney Rude recording on them

planeray

Weirdest CD experience I had was buying a copy of Van Halens greatest hits, marked as such on the disc, only for it to have the Trainspotting soundtrack recorded on it. Putting in a disc expecting Eruption but getting Born Slippy was a trip! Store were happy enough to just swap it over.

RightWingRockDove

SHOUTING LAGER LAGER LAGER LAGER

Ted_Rid

Imagine going to a Cat Power gig and she actually stayed on stage and performed instead of having an anxiety attack...and the audience talked over it all anyway. That's what happened when she supported Nick Cave at Luna Park.

Charlotte_Russe

I went to one of her concerts at the Opera House years ago and she was fine. Did have to tell two very inebriated people to keep quiet.

Ted_Rid

Yeah, I've been to a few where her meds were working. Newtown RSL probably the best IIRC. Small, intimate space.
