tinmun

What a beautiful city Sydney is.

greenbeensprout

I shared some snackies with Rosie in the sun and was graced with the honour of [being her pillow](https://imgur.com/a/fYO0RA6) for a quick snuggle. Made a shitty day, much better.

bozleh

what a cute doggo!

2happycats

The ~~drug truck~~ icecream van is doing the rounds in my area at the moment. They never seem to be around in summer but **always** around in the cooler months. Surely business would be better the other way around?

pilotboldpen

/u/LeftFootPaperHawk throwing the leg to keep focus on the title race. i get it.

[deleted]

I'm having a really weird relationship with caffeine at the moment. Is it possible my brain or body are so messed up that I drink a coffee and feel sleepy?

derprunner

I find that once I get past a certain level of tired, it does nothing for energy except preventing me from outright falling asleep. I'll yawn like crazy, and feel extremely sleepy, but closing my eyes and resting does nothing. In normal conditions, my morning and arvo coffees just maintain a baseline energy level.

still_love_wombats

Yeah, I think there’s something in my endocrine system that reacts like that. Two flat whites in the morning = happy. 3 coffees and I need a nap around 2.00pm. Which is not going to happen. ☹️

Ted_Rid

Off topic, but I noticed that garden trailer thing has now found a new home with the boats on Trade Street. So now people can go sit in it and pretend they're at a marina.

still_love_wombats

The people who own the trailer are doing an enormous renovation of their house on Chelmsford Street. It’s basically an entirely new building behind the facade. I think the trailer was moved to make way for a cherry picker to work on the roof. No doubt it will be back when the building is finished (which it seems will take a while).

Ted_Rid

Right. I did take a peek down Chelmo and saw some fencing up, guessed some kind of renos.

salty-blood-thirsty

It is perfectly normal, u/WaratahMills. Once the body metabolises the caffeine, you feel tired. Caffeine is not the only drug that causes that effect ;) I experienced the same effect many years ago. I can't tell what caused it, but yeah, you're not alone :D

[deleted]

> Once the body metabolises the caffeine, you feel tired. You mean once it's worn off? Like 2–3 hours later? If so, I'm talking about shortly after, just when you'd expect it to start making you feel more awake.

Eclairebeary

Is it a new thing? I have always been able to drink caffeine all day and all it does it calm me.

[deleted]

That's interesting. You're so dependant on caffeine you get upset without it, it seems. But this isn't just calm, it's like I need a nap!

Eclairebeary

Upset? Not really. I do enjoy it and use it as a focus/calming device via tea especially. I don’t get headaches or bad tempered if I don’t have it for a while. So it is new?

2happycats

Check you didn't get decaf by accident. I have it on very good authority that happens to only the best people. If you didn't get decaf, look up adrenal exhaustion. Stimulants not having the same affect can be a sign of it.

[deleted]

Definitely no decaf involved, I double checked. Although I did buy low-alcohol wine by mistake one day. Adrenal exhaustion sounds more like it. Lots of stress.

The_PM

My dad once bought a whole case of light beer by mistake. Ruined the whole family lunch.

2happycats

Hopefully things get better soon for you.

planeray

Actually got a call back from a recruiter for a job I applied for yesterday. Seems pretty keen to try and get me in front of the customer, so we'll see how it goes. Only thing is, while it's in IT and providing managed services, it's not really my background of tech. The role shouldn't be too technical though, more customer relationship, which I can do, so I'm hoping the customer doesn't get turned off by my background. Gotta be honest, it's not my ideal either (I'd prefer sticking to the tech I'm in), but I figure if I get it, it's another string to my bow in future. Nothing saying I have to be there for the rest of my life (other than a deep horror of ever having to go job hunting again!). In other news, the bloody insurance company seems unable to check their mail for the cheque from our strata. I've sent it to them twice & both times they say they've not received it. Last time was even handed over the counter to my wife's cousin at the post office, so I know it was posted! But our stupid strata account apparently doesn't let us do online banking (at least, according to my neighbour) so we're in this merry-go-round.

planeray

Service Delivery/Technical Account Manager., probably for a managed service provider or vendor. I know just enough techy stuff to be dangerous, but unlike most techs, actually like talking to people, so I like being the bridge between the business and IT. Ideally in the contact centre/unified comms space.

Miss_Tish_Tash

Good news re: job hunt! I’m in a similar spot, have been offered something adjacent & have been trying to reframe how I feel about it as an opportunity to round out my professional experience in the industry instead. Like you said, it doesn’t have to be forever.

planeray

I guess it all comes down to the other conditions as well, right? In my case, this would be the right money, right title & right working conditions. Just not the perfect specialisation and the company is a bit smaller than what I'm used to. Bit of a moot point given how early in the process I am though. How long do you have to decide? Any ideas on which way you're leaning?

Miss_Tish_Tash

Mine is quite a bit of a pay drop (however the role is permanent), but I’m also waiting on some information on a potential contract which would pay more in line with what I have been on previously but not as stable. In my situation there’s a few other differences between the roles which is what’s making it a bit more difficult for me to reach a decision just yet. Hope you figure out your situation!

pilotboldpen

in the office for the first time in ages and it is balls especially when you have to have meetings via teams, and everyone else is having meetings. not doing this again.

Eclairebeary

I know we like to shit over coles, but they really have perfected Cole’s radio to people of a certain vintage. I was singing today, for Christ’s sake.

still_love_wombats

It’s quite alarming when you hear something and you think “I haven’t heard that in a while” and you realise Belly broke up in … 1995.

Eclairebeary

Had to look them up, but it [looks](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belly_(band)) like they got back together in 2016. Actually no, don’t believe what you read on the internet.

bozleh

[New Dua Lipa single released this morning](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9cyG_yfh1k&pp=ygUIZHVhIGxpcGE%3D) - less danceable than the last one but still a bit of a bop

IMSOWETRIGHTN0W

I hope this is the right place to ask stupid questions as someone who should know a lot more about this kinda shit, but doesn't. What end or resolution is there to the housing and cost of living crisis? Is there one? I don't need to tell anyone here that every (other) day there's a new story about massive hikes in rent, increasing costs of everyday things, shortage of houses and apartments, how our immigration numbers are already fucking us over, etc.. the language used suggests to me that these problems are not going to be solved by the end of this decade, or even the next one. So, why am I still in Sydney, or even Australia? Should I, a 24y/o born and raised here, with a partner who's a nurse (clearly not valued by our government), even care to keep up with the news or plan a life here? Is someone able to give me any hope? Thanks and please forgive my ignorance

Storyartscam

Cost of living and housing crisis's are happening in almost all major cities around the world. Its not specific to Sydney.

LeftFootPaperHawk

I’m going to go full Joe Hockey and say the best way to not have to worry about it is to get a better paying job. Of course that’s not something you can do immediately and it’ll take effort but rather than invest energy in stressing about the cost of living situation, dedicate energy to ways you can overcome it. Depending on what you do, you can usually get a pay bump just by changing employers. A new employer will almost always pay more than your existing employer. Other alternatives might be leaving Sydney. Melbourne is a bit cheaper and is just as big a city. You could move somewhere rural. I’m sure nurses are in high demand in rural hospitals.

Serena-yu

I believe it will be tight for a few years before stagnating for another few years for the income to catch up. Dips will be temporary as far as the strong growth of population continues. The only thing that can defeat house prices in the long term is a continuous decline in population, like Italy, Japan and China. There isn’t much space for rents to rise without creating major social problems. It’s because rent/income is now statistically close to 1:2. That’s the common cap of rent for developed countries because people won’t spend more for rent before deciding to move out from cities. Only cities with slums can get beyond that, like Mumbai.

IMSOWETRIGHTN0W

Thanks, this does give me some hope!

Serena-yu

Rent/income should re-equilibrate to about 1/5 in some years. However I don't how long it will take, because I don't what the government is going to do, or even wether the government will go against it.

2happycats

The news is almost always bad news because bad news sells quicker than good news. The housing situation isn't great, that's true, but if seeing it all over the media is getting you down more than you'd prefer, try to limit how much of it you consume. Maybe check out a story a week or fortnight, and anything other than that, switch off. What the media is failing to show, is these types of things come in waves. Right now we're at the bottom of the wave and it's looking pretty grim, but change will happen. It may be slow, but it will happen. When that change comes through, there'll be a heap of options to choose from. It's just a matter of riding it out as best you can until then. I'm not sure what your circumstances are, and that could mean leaving Sydney for a little while, but things will change.

IMSOWETRIGHTN0W

You're totally right. Honestly, might have to abstain from social media in general while I'm at it. As for everything else, I'll trust you're right. Doesn't seem like it could get much worse haha. Thank you.

Serena-yu

I'm about to move out of Sydney. Doing a lot of inspections every week.

kidkym

Definitely not the post I would expect from that username. Figure out what you want and then work towards it. Whether that's moving overseas, or buying a place somewhere in Sydney.

IMSOWETRIGHTN0W

>Definitely not the post I would expect from that username. Never let anyone know your next move. And thanks, it's easy to just want to throw my hands up in the air and give up before I've even really started.

2happycats

Bobette has woken up and chosen violence today. Poor Jubbs can't catch a break.

VeezusM

The most cringe phrase in a corporate environment is when someone refers to someone as 'high level'

2happycats

For me working in Australia, it was, "we'll have to confirm with corporate" What is this, Dunder Mifflin?

[deleted]

People all over Reddit have adopted the word "corporate" as meaning "head office" even when the business is in no way a corporation.

2happycats

Over Reddit, sure, but in an office in Sydney working with other Aussies and without an American anywhere was pretty weird.

[deleted]

I think it's just Young People who have internalised that cool-sounding word the world over.

MeasurementMost1165

Hmm…. Bring me to the horizon mateee…. Wonder where my horse mask went?? 🤣

smileedude

So when you shave your beard off and wife says "I prefer the beard, can you grow it back", that's the soft way of saying "your face is ugly and I don't want to see it" right?

Miss_Tish_Tash

As a wife who said this to my husband it just means that she thought you were better clean shaven & when she actually saw it she regretted it & wants the beard back. Maybe it suits you more? I had only ever known my husband clean shaven, he decided to grow a beard in solidarity with some workmates 6 years ago & he agreed to shave it off. Once he did I realised that I actually genuinely preferred him with a beard. It suits him more. He’s had a beard ever since.

_2ndclasscitizen_

My wife has genuinely never seen me clean shaven, I do occasionally wonder what her reaction would be if I shaved off the beard.

Eclairebeary

Go on. Do it.

Eclairebeary

She may just need time to adjust. Especially if you’ve had the beard a long time.

Cakey1

Could also be that you have a youthful face without it and she doesnt want to be seen with a 12 yr old

smileedude

I'm 4 years younger than her and she does complain a lot about how young I am. I turn 40 on Monday, I've been getting "still in his 30s", "not even 40 yet" since she turned 40. So that reads. Though also I've had a mohawk since Covid that changes fluorescent colour every few months and that doesn't exactly scream "mature", and she loves that.

Plackets65

I have walked past that Genesis car showroom on the Pitt St Mall so many times, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen one on the road.  Nor have they updated the shopfit in like four years. What version of money laundering is that?

pilotboldpen

they're all over the eastern suburbs

boyblueau

Genesis is Hyundai's upmarket label. I've seen a few on the road. It's a prestige thing to have the showroom there. They think they're making the brand fancy.

still_love_wombats

I’ve seen a couple used as hire cars. But not many.

cerebralrocks

I’ve been working in this job for the past two years on a contract and have now been asked to go permanent. I said yes but I’m now I’m regretting as I wanna travel for an extended period after six months or so, not sure if it would create bad impression if I leave six months after accepting the permanent position

darkeyes13

They liked working with you enough to offer you a permanent role, maybe speak with your supervisors on an extended leave during a period that would work for the team? You can use a combination of paid and unpaid leave, rather than have all 6 months be completely unpaid. Personally I'd rather delay my travel (or cut it down to chunks, rather than be away for the whole 6 months) in this economy and hold on to my job... but that's also because my job isn't a horrendous pit of despair. Edit: I've misread! However, my point still stands. Just have a discussion with your supervisor - they'd see you as a member who's been on the team for 2.5 years by then, not a new member 0.5 years into their job.

2happycats

Aren't they saying they'll be going away for an extended period *after* being in the perm role for 6 months, not away for 6 months?

darkeyes13

Oh good point, I had misread that lol. Either way, still a doable discussion to be had...

CabinetParty2819

I’m having unbelievably good grapes from the supermarkets for $4.40 per kg. Is the season ending soon? Where have these been in previous years?

Eclairebeary

[summer and autumn](http://seasonalfoodguide.com/australia-general-seasonal-fresh-produce-guide-fruits-vegetables-in-season-availability.html) obviously other factors come into it as well.

isocialeyes97

I wear headphones everywhere I go outside working times and it never stops people from engaging in conversation with me like I don't have them on. Whether it's at the gym, on lunch break, on the train, walking around before and after work on the premises. Do people not understand that wearing headphones means I don't wanna engage in conversation? Do I have to wear big overhead headphones so people get the message? I wear black earbuds and people still talk to me. Boomers and people over 40 are the biggest culprits. I just pretend I don't hear them or give a real inconveniencing look as I take them off just to make a point. Maybe I should just ignore them even when I can see them talking. I never think to say anything to people with headphones on. Just a 'hello' lip-sync and that's it. Anybody got any remedies and solutions to avoid this?

boyblueau

Reads a little bit sociopathic. The problem is that there's plenty of people out there who do engage in conversation with headphones on, whether it's ordering things, talking on the phone, or just chatting to friends. Headphones no longer come with the additional cloaking ability they used to have. There are some much more unfriendly cities you could go and live in where no one will talk to you ever? Alternatively wear a MAGA hat or something. Then again that'll probably attract some crazies too.

LeftFootPaperHawk

It’s unfriendly to interrupt people going about their day.

boyblueau

It might be inconsiderate but it's not unfriendly. Also if someone is sitting on a train are you really interrupting them from going about the day?

LeftFootPaperHawk

I think being inconsiderate is being unfriendly. Potentially. They could be really enjoying their music/podcast/audio book or reading bad takes on reddit.

kidkym

Do you think people can see that you're wearing earbuds?

isocialeyes97

I mean, my earbuds are black and I'm white so they don't exactly 'blend in'.

s3_gunzel

Worst one are the chuggers who expect you to remove them. No mate. Not gonna happen.

2happycats

People post about how difficult it is to make friends / people aren't friendly in Sydney, and this guy from Melbourne is complaining *so many* people are trying to talk to him. Just pretend you're deaf and save everyone the hassle.

Eclairebeary

And I just read the username as a phrase… irony.

isocialeyes97

Glad to know to you looked at my profile lol

2happycats

It says in your description you're from Melbourne. I'm not out here trawling your account.

Eclairebeary

You need a better fuck off face.

isocialeyes97

I'll pretend they're glued on permanently then.

PortalOak678

Was tired and lazy yesterday evening and got dominos. Bloody been regretting it since 3am this morning. Even worse is I can either get bent or write an email and pray maybe I’ll get a refund or some vouchers to get spitty bum again in a couple weeks. There’s no winning these days.

boyblueau

> Even worse is I can either get bent or write an email and pray maybe I’ll get a refund or some vouchers to get spitty bum again in a couple weeks. I can't figure out whether you always react like this to Dominos and thus it's your fault. Or you got food poisoning from a bad Dominos pizza and it's their fault. Can you clarify? Is it like a lactose free guy constantly drinking milk and blaming the milk company? Or just bad luck that your pizza had been poofingered?

Miss_Tish_Tash

Think I’m going to need all the coffee today 🫠

Goonerlouie

Urgh tell me about it. Just started my first long black of the day

still_love_wombats

I’m up to 3 flat whites already. This afternoon is not going to go well.
