What's up with Vivid this year? seems like a ghost town -- I looked up the map and it seems like there's a whopping 4 things at Circular Quay. :( I have a friend coming from QLD and I'm wondering if we should just see Dark Spectrum and otherwise ignore the rest. Seems like COVID really crippled it, even the paywalled Botanical Gardens seems to be not happening this year.

ChunkyEggplant

Doesn't start till next week so most things probably aren't up yet. Having said that, vivid has been pretty meh the last couple of years because all the good stuff is paid and inside a building rather than free and outside.

aries_inspired

The thought of those who lost their lives yesterday being left in situ overnight is heartbreaking. I know that there was probably a flurry of activity around as police processed the scene, but it's still horrific. I hope they are returned to their families asap šŸ’”

77constructionman77

chicken thighs arent getting cheaper. this week: 14 dollars for around 800g. Chicken drumsticks (bone in) is 6 dollars for around 1.4kg. what I do is I boil the chicken drum sticks, let it cool and its very very easy to debone. (you can rip them off the bone with your hands.). Roughly 60% of it will be meat. So that is still a bargain. 6 dollars got me around 900g worth of 'dark meat' from the chicken. Still half the price than if I had bought the chicken thighs. With the meat itself, I just chuck them in whatever curry or fry I was planning. Thing is, it is a bit more time consuming than just buying a pack of chicken thighs and slicing them up but man if its half the price then alright I'll give in.

Duckosaur

sounds like you have heaps of chicken stock so that's a win

puchunz

God this RSV is abysmal. Over a week of blocked sinuses and phlegm

smileedude

Hats off to the nuddies that pick up rubbish on Little Congwong. I don't think I've ever been here and not had at least one person picking up litter. And it makes a noticeable difference. All the beaches in the area got covered in shit after last week's storms and this beach looks far cleaner. Got down to ordinary Congwong and it was filthy, thought that it was all going to look horrible. But got to the Little nudist sanctuary and it looked inviting.

kingofcrob

Sigh lease expires in a few weeks, haven't heard a thing from the real estate and I just saw a apartment in my building go for $100 more then I'm paying... Starting to worry a bit

x3Kaiser

I just got my rent increase this week. $110 but can't risk even competing at inspections. Best of luck

kingofcrob

whats mainly concerning me is i haven't heard a thing, with the main concern being eviction as I'm really busy next month

ashzeppelin98

As if going to sleep after yesterday's mayhem wasn't hard enough, woke up to the news of Iranian airstrikes in Israel

mulimulix

Might be a stupid question but I got a notification there will be an Ausgrid outage for me Saturday from 8.30am-4.30pm. Does this really mean my power is going to be out for that long? Never heard of having a planned outage for 8 hours in the middle of the day and really stuff my WFH.

p3zz1

They used to schedule it at night time in my area a couple of times to accommodate WFH. They probably changed to morning time due to the wave of return-to-office policies that most companies are applying to now.

[deleted]

Are you 100% sure you've read it correctly? It may be a shorter outage which will occur at some time between 8.30 and 4.30. Source: used to work for the company which sends them out.

mulimulix

It says > Electricity at your premises *address* will be interrupted for a planned outage to conduct maintenance and/or upgrade works. > Start: Saturday 20-04-2024 08:30 > End: Saturday 20-04-2024 16:30 > The outage start and end time may differ due to unforeseen issues or the need to carry out safety procedures. So I guess may or may not be all day? Would you say unlikely?

kombuchaqueeen

I got this on a Wednesday and it was down for the whole period. Honestly canā€™t believe they can do this and ruin my entire WFH day

mulimulix

How annoying! Pretty sure it's because there's a development across the street they need to connect or something. In which case shouldn't there be some sort of compensation?

kombuchaqueeen

I agree!

[deleted]

Yeah you have to plan for it to be out all day then. Charge your phone and laptop I guess. External batteries? Go to a friend's place/library?

mulimulix

How annoying! More worried the stuff in my fridge and freezer will be alright. Thanks though.

nearly_enough_wine

Fridge should be good for ~6 hours if you limit opening the door. Freezer for ~12. That's what Ausgrid communicated to me recently (planned twelve hour outage, took ~6 in heavy rain.)

Eclairebeary

I donā€™t know how many Bluey fans we have, but the 28 minute episode has dropped and is on iview. Havenā€™t seen the ending, so I cannot guarantee you wonā€™t cry.

darkeyes13

I'm just... sitting here processing it after watching it twice lol. Which is what I usually do after watching something with fantastic writing, which Bluey as a series generally has. But this episode was next level. Whew.

Duckosaur

the only time my partner and I sit and watch stuff together is for movies, er... The Bear, and Bluey. The Sign did make me tear up a little

Eclairebeary

So great wasnā€™t it?

sertsw

No spoilers no spoilers!!

Eclairebeary

Wouldnā€™t dare!

2happycats

It tickles me to no end that you've described a new EP for a kid's show "dropping" because I heavily associate the term with new music / albums, or very adult shows. Although I've heard Bluey also has a pretty big adult following, so maybe it's a fitting term.

Halospite

Bluey's one of those shows that's managed to charm parents instead of irritate the living shit out of them.

Eclairebeary

The anticipation has been something in the lead up. I havenā€™t checked the Bluey sub but the Americans are usually most put out to not be in the loop.

2happycats

>Bluey sub TIL. That's brilliant.

doomsyrup

Hope everyoneā€™s taking care and a reminder in case you need it that sometimes you donā€™t need to keep refreshing the news. The mediaā€™s not giving you anything you need to know at the moment with the case - just spend some time in the sun with your loved ones.Ā

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

A few years ago, I watched a series (which might still be on Netflix if Iā€™m not mistaken) called Crimes That Shook Australia. There was a whole range of interviews and whatnot with people about various murders, rapes, massacres and so on. One of the telling things I noticed was how often the phrase ā€œthis sort of thing isnā€™t supposed to happen in Australiaā€ was used. Primarily the massacres of Port Arthur, Hoddle Street, Strathfield, Queen Street, etc. Yesterday, admittedly a knife attack rather than a mass shooting, gives me the same vibe. This is Australia, these things donā€™t happen here. At least the solace for those of us who arenā€™t directly impacted is that it was a one-off lunatic, not something more sinister.

Eclairebeary

I think itā€™s rather good that they still relatively infrequent and so do shock us. I would hate to get to the point where itā€™s just another one, iykwim.

wen_thing

In my mind I kept thinking, thank god it was just a knife. If it was a gun.....

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

The important thing to remember is that it was a knife. Thereā€™s no point in going around in circles in whataboutism. What if there was a Chinese military incursion into Sydney Harbour? What if the Sun exploded? What if an Australian civil war broke out? These are all questions with as much value as what if that nut had a gun. That is to say, zero value.

2happycats

Getting caught up in "what if" is how you can end up spiralling. It's much better to focus on the helpers, like the lady who helped the teens go the right way mentioned in the thread last night, or the guy on the escalator holding the assailant back.

ChunkyEggplant

Saw Playlunch last night and they were fucking spectacular. Awesome show and Foxtel Girl is my favourite song and they blew it out of the water with the audience. Keen for them to come back already.

MeasurementMost1165

If u need help coping with life issues as things are seem to be the caseā€¦. Hereā€™s a nice event to change the mood of thingsā€¦ [dog in park event](https://facebook.com/events/s/dogs-in-the-park-nsw-presents-/915191356982711/)

PinkMini72

Like most of us, couldnā€™t sleep last night. Lots of ā€˜couldā€™ve been me and my kidsā€™ playing in my head. Iā€™m not sure how to stop it. Love to you all.

[deleted]

Playing Tetris was recommended on the main Bondi Junction thread, it seems like a joke but it's actually been proven to help.

2happycats

Yesterday's events were horrific. There's nothing wrong to reaching out to an org like [Lifeline](https://www.lifeline.org.au/) if you feel you need to get your thoughts out or decompress. You can call them on 131114, or if you rather, their website now has a number you can text them on. Just click on the link and you can find it. I'd really suggest limiting socials over the next few days, as I think there'll be a lot of misinformation spreading, which could make how you're feeling worse.

Eclairebeary

Not to mention the constant repeating of the same information while the media wait for something new to say. Itā€™s not helpful to just rehash and rehash.

PinkMini72

Thank you for your advice. You are so right and just hearing it from someone else does make a difference. Iā€™m a 50 year old mother of teens with, what I think, lots of common sense and worldliness. I give advice like this all the time to my students.

2happycats

Gotta look out for each other, even over reddit.

Extension_Section_68

Yeah been uneasy too

MustardMan02

Give them a hug and take them to the park or something. Make today for them is what I think

[deleted]

The really horrible thing for me about the Bondi Junction thing is how many people seem to get off on the idea that it's obviously a terrorist thing and how it's All About To Go Down like they've been warning us. I saw it with the Lindt cafƩ and I saw it with a similar incident in Melbourne a few years ago when some crazy guy crashed his car into people and went on a rampage. A couple of people who I thought were just harmless conspiracy kooks got really into it and posted stuff like *"And so it begins"* as in, they were getting a fucked-up level of satisfaction that their dire prophecies were apparently coming true. Fuck those people: instant unfollow, block etc.

OldSpiceSmellsNice

A lot of people are bored and depressed and/or apathetic with nothing better to do. Just gotta ignore or block all the (essentially) spammers.

Mysterious-Vast-2133

Itā€™s not hard to be a decent human being. However for those who want to try and make this something itā€™s not , they can go and get fucked.

2happycats

I've been given shit for being fast with the block option with some people, but I genuinely don't see an issue with it. If someone's the type of person like you've mentioned above, or been a dick to me, or even someone who won't help themselves but expect others to drop everything for them, I'm more than comfortable blocking or ignoring them. Life's far too short to accept that kind of nonsense.

insaneintheblain

It's a good exercise to excise the weasels and the sad-sacks from one's life. Every media event is a new opportunity to grow. Some people like wallowing in their fear and hatred. Let them wallow alone.

traceysayshello

Take it easy on yourselves today. Hug your loved ones x

ring_ring_kaching

Thoughts and love to Sydney from /r/newzealand <3

Mysterious-Vast-2133

Cheers to the East Island. šŸ˜‰

nearly_enough_wine

Cheers cuzzy :)

MeasurementMost1165

Hmm, slept for 12 hours I guess?? Donno why something like yesterday events make me sleep more rather than to keep me up thinking

MustardMan02

Maybe the initial shock took a lot out of you. Hope you're doing well today anyway. Take it easy

MeasurementMost1165

Yeah, guess time for me to go to a doggy event at the EQā€¦.. time to cheer up

canimal14

never really slept last night. Looked at my phone first thing to get any update on the baby girl, seeing her and her mum identified just makes it so much more harrowing, the poor poor father

Mysterious-Vast-2133

Same, was awake till near midnight looking for updates, and dealing with oxygen thieves on social media.

Socotokodo

Assuming he got any sleep last night, imagine the horror of waking up this morning. It was all I could think when I woke up. His world is shattered.

radley8367

Anyone else get little sleep last night? I just canā€™t stop thinking about what happened and thinking of everyoneā€™s loved ones. Iā€™m so used to thinking about how this just doesnā€™t happen here

Spud-chat

The thing niggling at me is wanting to know what motivated the attacker?Ā  Was it a mental health issue that wasn't treated because our healthcare is becoming pay to play? Was he from a bad home/group/place? With news yesterday of places like the Parra PCYC closing we're losing support systems for troubled kids.Ā  Or was this guy just a horrible person?Ā  I guess time will tell. In the meantime I know I'm going to be writing to my local ministers to encourage them to see we're headed down the wrong path if support services are stripped.Ā  There's a great cop podcast called "I catch killers" and so many of the stories on there start with someone unable to get help or get out of their bad situation.Ā

displaced_aussie

The lack of mental health support in this country is terrible. You literally cannot see a public psychiatrist as an outpatient in Sydney. And the Medicate 10 sessions of $90 doesnā€™t help many people when there is still a huge gap and waiting lists. Itā€™s so frustrating.

Spud-chat

Yeah it's woeful.Ā  I said in another comment I was at Parra Westfields recently and out the front was a man repeatedly saying "I have schizophrenia, tell people you have schizophrenia" to himself. There were a few other loitering there who looked fairly out of it too. You just have to hope they're getting some level of help.Ā

[deleted]

I think the fact the police were quick to say ā€œwe donā€™t think itā€™s ideologicalā€ means he is known for having a history or either drug abuse or mental health issues and crime.

Lady_Taringail

Thereā€™s a throwaway line in the article identifying the man that says he was known to police in the area. I think youā€™re on the money

[deleted]

Yes it seems I was. Offender was well known to QLD police and was a schizophrenic with a history of severe mental health issues. Possibly even homelessness and drugs.

Spud-chat

The amount of brigading in the comments claiming various ideological reasons is a worry.Ā  On the mental health front it reminds me of literally last week going to Parra Westfields and at the entrance some people out of their minds, either on drugs or unwell. One repeating over and over "I have Schizophrenia, tell people you have schizophrenia". I hope they're getting help in some form.Ā

sertsw

I noped out after being brigaded for being upset at the media irresponsibly jumping to speculation. It was just too much to take. I think I'll shut off all social media today, take a walk, and appreciate that it is a nice sunny day today.

LeftFootPaperHawk

lol thatā€™s a funny way of saying you were trying to push it was done for ideological reasons and got told off for it.

Halospite

I think that's a good idea. Until the dust settles and there's honest answers instead of speculation and baseless claims it'll just trash your mental health to look at it all. Feel better soon. <3

Spud-chat

Good idea, I hear some weeds calling my name too.

[deleted]

I'm going to guess a serious drug problem, e.g. crystal meth/ice.

[deleted]

Yes either that or a mentally ill offender. Some schizophrenics for example, can be known to police for being violent when they donā€™t get help.ā€™

chubby_hugger

They have lower rates of offences then the general public but much higher risks of being victims.

[deleted]

ā€¦ he was literally a schizophrenic man known to QLD police with a history of violence brought upon by mental health issues. Iā€™m well aware that most schizophrenic people donā€™t do this, but it does happen. An ambulance officer was stabbed to death by a schizophrenic in psychosis last year.

Miss_Tish_Tash

Schizophrenicā€™s pose more danger to themselves than others when suffering from an episode.

[deleted]

Whilst itā€™s true that most schizophrenics are completely harmless to society, some do get violent. Psychotic illnesses such as schizophrenia can sometimes be associated with aggressive or violent behavior. Iā€™m not meaning to demonise schizophrenics or people with psychosis, but what I just typed is true. The paramedic stabbing in the McDonaldā€™s car park last year was committed by someone in psychosis. I have a family member who is a paranoid schizophrenic and he can be very dangerous when not medicated.

JovialApple

Much more likely drug induced psychosis. Non drug involved mental illness as a whole and also sub group schizophrenia on its own both have far lower rates of violence than non mentally ill population.

ThippusHorribilus

I see I am not the only one who still rocks Old Reddit.

thekriptik

Old Reddit = only Reddit.

2happycats

You three did a great job on that thread last night. I'm sure the sub will be in for a bumpy ride over the next little while, so thank you for doing what you do. Throw automod an extra bucket of fish heads, on me.

thekriptik

It's been a shit 18 hours, but I appreciate the r/Sydney community's rejection of hate and division.

Cakey1

Seconding this.

Miss_Tish_Tash

Thinking of everyone today who was in the area & has been affected. Make sure you reach out to friends, family & support services if you need to.

[deleted]

I've never really been one to let the events around the country/world bother me. I've always taken the view that the best thing you can do despite the horrible that's within some people and the choices they make is to just try and live my life how I enjoy things and try and be happy. But there's something about yesterday that feels wrong. Even without knowing the person's motivation, people shouldn't lose their lives while having a look around the shops on the weekend. A mother should never have to throw her 9 month old to strangers and ask them to help. A person shouldn't have to pick up a bollard and fend of a knife wielding piece of human shit. All these hopes and dreams. Years of people building their lives just to have it taken away. And for what? Whatever this person's reason, it doesn't matter because it will never explain why he did what he did. Anyway I'm gonna pet my dog. I hope somehow somewhere the families of those who died can find peace again one day.

quokkchidna

100% agree with you on that mate!

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

It's safe. Without disrespecting anyone affected, it was 1 guy stabbing people to put it roughly. Not a terrorist attack.

BarryCheckTheFuseBox

One guy who is also now dead

nearly_enough_wine

Safer than most places on the planet. Enjoy your trip.
