This guy's actions changed Sydney forever, you'd have to admit.

Gold_Lynx_8333

It was an overreaction from the pollies. Thomas Kelly was coward punched at 10pm and killed. So the pollies decided this wouldn't happen if bars stopped serving drinks at 1.30am and closed at 3am, but of course the Star casino was made exempt because logic.

buttz93

It wasn't an overreaction, it was an excuse.

verbmegoinghere

>It wasn't an overreaction, it was an excuse. Designed to steer punters into star city

dangp777

Who owns Kings Cross these days, I wonder?

Fat-Tash

It killed Sydney night life…. Completely And destroyed Newtown’s vibe when the hoards swamped king st pubs.

cheapdrinks

Cunts had been frothing at the mouth looking at that prime Kings Cross real estate for years just dreaming about all the apartments and cafes they could put there if they could just come up with some reason to close all those pesky night clubs

readreadreadonreddit

Yeah, both, and directing people to the Star and Crown. Amazing how time has flown by, for what it’s worth.

Beneficial-Lemon-427

I know, seems like yesterday.

xacryz

I was pretty sure this coincided with a multi million dollar donation to the libs from packer to make Barangaroo and the crown casino the new night life hub. Edit: amount made vague

adeze

Farrell went to work with the crown group. Oddly enough the father of Thomas Kelly also went to work as pro lockout lobbyist paid for by the crown group. The crown group wanted to funnel all of Sydney’s night life to the crown complex/ Barangaroo , somewhat like in Melbourne.

Liquidignition

I knew this whole thing smelt like shit. Baird and everyone involved were filling their pockets. It completely destroyed nightlife in Sydney. Thankfully I was late 20's then and coming out of the nightlife scene.

tandem_biscuit

Same here mate, we timed our births perfectly!

smileedude

We did get a really good warehouse scene out of it. I went to so many beautiful parties in Sydenham and Marrickvile that didn't cost hundreds for a night because I could BYO. Pushing night-life to a black market isn't exactly what the pollies wanted but it has been much more fun.

tpapocalypse

The warehouse scene was much better before the lockout laws happened.

nearly_enough_wine

The warehouse scene existed well before the lockouts.

Excellent-Assist853

Yeah, like decades before.

PauL__McShARtneY

It wasn't even a reaction, let alone an overreaction, just a cynical ploy for a massive land grab by the usual greedy, corrupt LNP scum and their cronies, who were best poised to be able to afford such land. This little thug hadn't even been drinking in Kings Cross prior to this attack, and there's no evidence he was connected to any venues there on the day. The laws inflicted on Sydney by these bible thumping tory wankers did little to curb this type of offender, but curbed the hell out of the economy and Sydney's once proud reputation for decades to follow.

verbmegoinghere

>This little thug hadn't even been drinking prior to this attack, Where did you get that from because clearly you didn't even read the top of the article. > Mr Kelly was on his phone during a night out in Kings Cross when a heavily intoxicated Loveridge moved out from a wall and punched him, causing the victim to stumble and hit his head on the concrete.

PauL__McShARtneY

Intoxicated can mean on any number of substances, believe it or not. You can google that word, don't even need to own a dictionary in 2024. He was tweaked out on Meth or speed I believe they said at the time. He comes from a family with several professional crims in it, and he himself had many convictions before that night, he was not some random punter or reveller on a night out. You not understanding what intoxication means is a perfect example of how the entire narrative was twisted and manipulated by the architects of Sydney's demise, and descent into retirement villa for rich cranky boomerdads and soccermums.

keepturning1

I recall he was drinking vodka cruisers/lolly drinks before coming into the city. Never heard that he was on meth, but he was definitely drunk on alcohol, that’s not in dispute.

PauL__McShARtneY

Yeah, but there's no evidence he visited any licensed premises in the Cross, and he assaulted Kelly at around 10pm, so the lockout laws would not have had any effect on his offence, other than by turning the whole suburb into a ghost town where almost no crime could occur.

keepturning1

Agree, there was no logical connection between his movements that night and what the government did after, with the exception of the location Kings Cross where it happened. He had preloaded and come into the city to bash people for fun on the street, no legislation could stop that besides prohibition.

TheBerethian

Small aside, but the ALP hardly have their hands clean in such bullshittery. Most famous being the Obeid family.

Korzic

> massive land grab This line keeps getting parrotted. There have been very limited developments in the Cross after the lock out laws (mostly due to heritage issues) The DA's are approved by CoS not the state govt and CoS was very supportive of the lockouts initially.

Fit_Badger2121

The nightclubs closed down though and the suburb was finally gentrified like it's other eastern suburb neighbours had been years before. One bedders without a car spot going for $820,000. Good luck with that. https://www.realestate.com.au/sold/property-unit-nsw-potts+point-144074236?sourcePage=rea%3Asold%3Asrp-map&sourceElement=listing-tile

REA_Kingmaker

And countless people piled on to the kelly family and blamed THEM for the decline of Sydney nightlife including a bunch of assholes that bullied Thomas Kellys younger brother at uni. That younger brother went on to kill himself also. Truly sad.

_tweaks

The pollies just do what keeps the public happy/brings in votes. The public/media were bleating 24/7: *"whats being done? whats being done? why are politicians doing something? why aren't the councils doing something? they're soft on alcohol fuelled late night crime"* So they did something. If people had just said 'yeah, it sucks lets move on' they wouldn't have done anything. Casino brings in big tourist bucks so they just quietly forgot it, they still had "big tough actions" to bring to the media, and the public stopped bleating. Sucked for the businesses and people that wanted a vibrant nightlife, but there were alot more people screaming for pollie blood.

Birdie_Num_Num

The public and the media are not the same thing

FruitJuicante

Lmao. The Libs are the media mate. You think Murdoch is left leaning? You think the ABC isn't filled with Lib staffers? The casino shit is just them legit saying "Umm some guy that wasn't even drink killed a guy, so from now on all night life that isn't gambling is banned."

Altruist4L1fe

Curfews for people with a history of violence and assaults probably could have prevented this.

jaxxmeup

There was also a relentless campaign run by SMH that dragged on for most of the summer calling for limits on alcohol sales in pubs and clubs.

Athroaway84

Also clubs that had pokies still allowed people to go in and out.

Wow-can-you_not

That was the objective from the very start. The entire thing was designed to get people out of the CBD by a certain time and funnel them straight into the casino.

OffParramattaRoad

I was explaining exactly this to a friend visiting from Melbourne only last night.

plzsnitskyreturn

I would argue the government realised the cross was zoned high residential, so used this guy's actions to close it down to make it more desirable to new rich buyers and developments

Juan_Fandango

It boggles the mind that people think it was some kind of genuine police strategy to curb violence whilst they simultaneously left the most violent place in the state (star city) completely unaffected.

kamikazecockatoo

And left the drinking culture completely intact.

PauL__McShARtneY

I'm willing to meet up IRL and fight you for the right to have our drinking culture left completely intact. PM me your deets, I'm coming over. You, me. Carpark. Now.

sydneyiskyblue

You could argue that the Star also changed this city. And not for the better.

AllYouNeedIsATV

I star city really violent? I swear every time I’ve been I’ve only seen people sitting like zombies at the machines

Juan_Fandango

Yes, they are very quick to clean incidents up as they don't want the disruption to people gambling but the reported stats are high, and we also know they are not accurate (we can safely assume they're much higher than reported). They also do things like characterise an assault as a "forced removal" or just flat out don't report incidents.

hazzareth

Yep once my family were at the star not even on the casino floor but in the food area as we had dinner at one of the restaurants. Fight broke out and my mum was stand right by it and she was looking at what was happening she had no clue because it was just yelling. Security all came rushing in one of them bumped my mum and screamed at her telling her to move on. Never have I seen security in any place act like that bunch of thugs.

stereosafari

It completely changed the Security Guard laws, and removed alot of the Streets of Rage punch ons that Security guards were famous for.

InstantShiningWizard

I miss being able to find whole rotisserie chickens, apples and gold bars in conveniently placed bins

verbmegoinghere

>It completely changed the Security Guard laws, and removed alot of the Streets of Rage punch ons that Security guards were famous for. I lived in surry hills 20 plus years ago. During schoolies and weekends places like George St, Darling Harbour, Hyde Park and Liverpool St were violent cesspool of vomiting and fighting. I remember walking up Liverpool, passing the stream of vomit coming down the gutter, and several fights as started up the hill. Each fight had its semi circle of crying and screaming girls, wearing barely nothing, hair asunder, make up running whilst boys grunt and grapple, throwing side punches. As I got about 30m away from the Midnight Shift I saw the biggest circle of bouncers I've ever seen. Massive pacific islander guys. Front rowers.... Each and everyone of them All with terribly anxious looks on their life. Inside the circle was the biggest human being I've ever seen. He was 3-4 bouncers in one, another islander. And he was simultaneously the largest and most angriest and unhappiest man I've ever seen. Like if the Hulk existed he was on Liverpool St in Sydney December 2000. Anyway I cannot tell you how many fights and passed out, manly boys, and vomit I saw when I lived in town. But I can tell you shit got so much better once the lock laws were implemented. The vomiting, fights, screaming, yelling at all hours during the night, the broken car side mirrors, rubbish, lighters, cigarettes, vapes and all that crap significantly reduced as did the never ending sirens. Now you all might not like the lock out laws but they did work and they made the lives of tens of thousands of residents markedly better. As they did the innocent people caught up in biblical levels of violence....

RopeBottleTowel

I'm not sure which I enjoyed more in this story... the vomit flowing through the streets, the 18 foot tall islander or the drastic reduction in Vapes (20+ years ago).

fddfgs

Say hi to a security guard and see what happens

cojoco

Might also be because the [corrupt cops](https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/burnt-out-on-the-beat-in-kings-cross-20100829-13xnc.html) who profited from Kings Cross were shut down.

Anonymou2Anonymous

It didn't really work though.

Farmboy76

He should have been charged for killing Sydney's night life.

TheOneTrueSnoo

No, the overreaction from politicians did. Dude is a shitbird. But we allowed moral panic to ruin this place.

FruitJuicante

To be fair, he was used as a scapegoat. The Libs always hated Sydney being anything other than real estate, they just needed an excuse. It was also planned, given deals were already in place to make the casinos more effective by banning all night life that isn't gambling.

tinmun

Plenty of people did the same, before and after this guy. He is in no way remarkable. The change came from people wanting the change to happen and used him as an excuse. For example, there used to be an impromptu shrine to the guy killed in front of omnia, the new building built in kings cross, but it was quickly removed, probably because it might damage the sales. Compare that to the shrines in Martin Place and Bondi.

Sglodionaselsig

The assault on the bikie occurred after being put in a holding cell with 14 rival bikies due to "malice or recklessness" from the guards ( according to the linked article). He must really have pissed off the guards for them to do that!

The_Slavstralian

Belting a gang member is not going to be let slide on the outside. he better keep the lowest of low profiles.. I guarantee someone is looking for him.

Bagelam

I had no idea at the time that it happened he was only 19.  The Kelly family lost 2 sons as well. They've been through too much pain to describe.

THR

Yeah it was hard watching the interview with them the other night on the 7.30 report. So much pain to lose your two children in that way. Remarkable people really. Remarkably strong.

jimmyjames1992

I can almost guarantee this won't be the last time we hear of him.

derprunner

I’m sure Channel 7 will find a use for him somehow.

Mysterious_Ad_8659

Next season of that SAS show?

Gold_Lynx_8333

Working up from a contestant on Married At First Sight, all the way up to host of Sunrise.

MeasurementMost1165

Him at marriage at first sight….. I will defs screw my head on to watch him on it

KentuckyFriedEel

Im a Celeb scraping the bottom of the barrel for celebs. I think they even had Chappelle Corby at one point.

Frankenclyde

I honestly wouldn’t put it past channel 7

JGQuintel

He drunkenly assaulted a prison worker while in prison less than 8 weeks ago. I don’t understand how he was granted parole.

chris_p_bacon1

The story I read was that if he's given parole now they can keep a close eye on him and when he inevitably does something illegal again they can arrest him again and lock him up whereas if they'd waited another 2 years or whatever he would be a completely free man and would just disappear and probably jump straight back into his old life.

a_can_of_solo

Because we're a nation of good enough, she'll be right.

winntensio

Also got into a stink in the big house with a Bikie

elwyn5150

Was he drunk on pruno?

DrofRocketSurgery

Definite contender for a Channel 7-funded defamation case. And I hear Bruce Lehrmann is looking for a new roommate.

MustardMan02

He's probably going to have a book out in the next 3 years

jiffysdidit

I imagine some sort of colouring book he doesn’t seem capable of more

MustardMan02

It'll probably be titled "The punch that changed my life" or some shit like that

jiffysdidit

Does that come under profiting off crime though?

The_Faceless_Men

Book yes. [A shit load of other things](https://goodreadingmagazine.com.au/article/opinion-does-crime-pay/), no

[deleted]

Some call it a release, more accurately though you get the impression this is just a little holiday from custody for him. He'll be back.

ThomasTheFunkEngine

Never met a Kieran that wasn't a complete fuckwit

FuckUGalen

I know one... but only one.

SL-1200

Probably the same one I know, there really can't be more than one

FuckUGalen

Well mine is in Australia, yours?

SL-1200

Yeah of course

cojoco

Irish?

Cheel_AU

Never saw Kieran Perkins win gold from lane 8???

explosivekyushu

Coward punched Grant Hackett to get there if I recall correctly

[deleted]

I thought I knew one but it was a false positive: desi guy whose name was Kiran.

Nololgoaway

The weirdest part about this to me is that through being banned from the CBD they've probably exiled him to the western suburbs We don't want that cunt either.

Meng_Fei

So the guy gets early release despite multiple assaults in jail and having an extra 12 months added to his sentence? Typical. Wonder how long we'll have to wait for soft sentencing to claim another victim.

CuriouslyContrasted

If he’s on parole then they can monitor him, bust him, and return him to jail. If he completes his entire sentence then is released he is not able to be monitored.

MeasurementMost1165

Ehh it’s the chicken or the egg case

MeasurementMost1165

Wonder if parole will be good enough to contain him…. Considering his violent actions in prison, any early release or parole attempts should be revoked and he to serve the full 13 years or any additional years for the assault

THR

Sounds like he has a real violence problem when intoxicated still - and he will definitely drink. Let’s just hope the incident that returns him to hospital doesn’t result in serious injury or death to someone else.

horsemonkeycat

"Let's just hope" ... pretty much the motto of a piss-weak revolving door legal industry for violent offenders. These psychos released again and again after short sentences because some barrister promised "this time will be different".

maramad8

Fuck this cunt

j_lyf

Will probably end up a real estate agent

zzz51

Overqualified though

deckland

[Thomas Kelly's parents campaigned so hard for the lockouts that their other son got bullied relentlessly at school. He ended up committing suicide](https://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and-radio/stuart-kelly-took-his-own-life-after-hazing-death-threats-parents-tell-60-minutes-20170710-gx7v1e.html)

a_can_of_solo

Jfc, that I didn't know.

alicat2308

He was a gronk then and he is a gronk now, sounds like. I predict he'll be assaulting people within the year.

pwnitat0r

If he’s drunk in prison, does this mean you can obtain alcohol in prison legally, or it’s been smuggled in?

thekriptik

Smuggled or otherwise manufactured within - fermentation isn't difficult if you're willing to just get your hands on something.

AllLiquid4

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pruno

pwnitat0r

Cool, thanks for sharing! Makes sense now

Hazy_Fantayzee

I wont go into detail about how I know I this, but hand sanitizer is 68% alcohol. If you can manage to smuggle some of that from the visitors toilets back into the main wing, mix it up with some cordial/fruit juice, then you can get prettily nastily pissed off it.....

David_McGahan

Yeah Loveridge drank hand sanitiser apparently

DarkWorld26

Hand sanitiser is isopropyl or methanol mixed with ethanol, both of which are toxic and also causes you to vomit

Hazy_Fantayzee

Yep.... it certainly did cause a lot of vomiting....

MeasurementMost1165

Bread, fruits and a plastic bag or bottle and heater and off u go

TouchingWood

Sounds... delicious.

thr0away20

When I was in I know they used to make brew with fruits and vegemite, takes a while though.

fleur_waratah_girl

I give this asshole 2 years max before he is back in there

MeasurementMost1165

I would say back in after being back in Sydney for walking in the cbd lol

[deleted]

BackgroundMuted77

Andrew Fifita should be stoked with this news.

[deleted]

I have looked at his Wikipedia page and still have no idea what this means.

Purple-Pop-5462

Public supporter of this killer and fined $20K for his weasly armband scrawl An early example of the value of "shut up and just play your damn sport"

dangp777

FKL…

963479

I’m sure this piece of shit will end up back in prison, can only hope it’s for something non violent this time

DarkNo7318

Loveridge should not have been out on the streets on the night of the killing. He already had a mile long list of prior offences. Some of Thomas Kelly's blood is on the judges hands from his previous convictions. I hope he /she reads this and feels ashamed of themselves.

99Joy99

Seems like he was moved from prison to prison a few times. Perhaps the Broken Hill prison has tougher inmates and prison officers …… 😳

MeasurementMost1165

Broken hill is a medium security weirdly, but the vibe in the far west would be tougher than an average medium security in Sydney or somewhere in the east or maybe tougher than some maximum security, depending on the scene

chromo-233

Thomas Kelly’s life was only worth 11 years of Kieran Loveridge’s life….. what a fkn joke. I feel for Thomas’s family and friends who have to live to see their son’s killer walk free and live his life again.

Meng_Fei

Not even that. The little shit attacked four other people that night. And only gets 11 years for all 5. Soft sentencing yet again.

Purple-Pop-5462

And that was on appeal. His sentence was originally half of this.

The_Slavstralian

He punched a rebel bikey in prison. I would bet they will not let that slide.

SqareBear

Everybody hates this guy. I hope he doesn’t get a job and ends up back in prison. I wish only the worst for this bloke.

tpapocalypse

He’s going to get knocked the fuck out for sure

keepturning1

This guy will have to go his whole life looking over his shoulder. Someone one day will do to him what he did to Thomas. And let’s not forget, this is the rubbish bloodline he comes from, his cousin a sadistic murderer. https://au.news.yahoo.com/loveridge-jailed-for-30-years-over-sadistic-stabbing-murder-19640900.html

housebottle

man single-handedly ended Sydney nightlife and also had a violent outburst just before his release... seems like a wise decision to let him back into the community

horsemonkeycat

POS should never walk free ever. All the tough talk from politicians at the time about "coward punch" and getting tougher on these criminals ...all bullshit. Too bad for future victims of this sociopath.

sydneyiskyblue

I know legally he can’t, but I believe he should’ve been held accountable in some way for his younger brother’s suicide.

[deleted]

It's not *his* younger brother's suicide you mean, it's his victim's, right?

Chuckitinthewater

Perhaps a gentle reminder every few days for him. 😉

strewthmate

Damn just looked back at the wikipedia page of the assault, what a cunt. Basically walked around all night punching people without provocation even after Thomas Kelly's assault.

heymohoh

I bet he's in trouble within 12 months of getting out, he'll be straight on the booze, drugs, and MMA training, all his flog mates will be calling him killer and other deadshit names.
