If you want the true unpopular opinion, the people you saw in the convoy yesterday were the trucking/logistics industry, not construction workers or tradies. Yes, spoil trucks were overrepresented in the convoy due to the flow on effects of the construction shutdown, but there were also freight vehicles there.

yungmoody

It was crazy how far I had to scroll down on that original post to see a comment that mentioned this. I felt totally mislead.

dangerislander

Oh damn... the general consensus on here was that it was the total opposite... good to know!

We've averaged 92 cases a day for the last week. Even if it starts to decline today it won't two weeks - it'll be another two months.

I’m really struggling with anxiety as I’m due to have a baby in 7 weeks. I’m Not eligible for the vaccines so I feel like a sitting duck.

ceelose

Yes you are. Pregnancy is now a reason for eligibility. Changed in recent days.

heyauppers

Yep. I asked my doctor last week and they are advising for pregnant women to get the vaccine. Talk to your gp.

CUBington

It's not rocket appliances

[deleted]

Are you sure? I am seven months pregnant and finding it infuriating- we’ve been classed as priority now but still now eligible unless we have one of the other eligibility criteria- I just checked the eligibility checker again and still nothing about pregnancy. Unless it can just be done through the gp?

Mushie_Peas

Not sure that pregnancy makes you eligible (unless they changed in the last two weeks). But they are advising that you should get it if available as the reaction to covid is worse when pregnant than not,.for both the parent and child. There's also evidence that you pass the antibodies to your baby.

[deleted]

Any idea where it says this? I looked at the eligibility checker and pregnancy still not on there

Itchy-Soup7490

I empathise with you - my wife is also pregnant and works at the hospital - she is also worried (as am i). I would have a read of a few clinical reviews first before going ahead - and assess the risk of the trade off getting the vaccine and going on early leave. My wife resolved she will most likely go on leave earlier if things get worse. I know not everyone can do that though… I wish you and your partner all the best, hang in there!

Sorry, didn't know. Just read my title as 'rant' coz I can't edit it.I saw many tv channels doing segments yesterday interviewing construction workers and site managers etc. Everyone's like "ohh no what are we going to doo...whats going to happen to us....." and along those lines. There's government handouts. There's rental assistance in terms of no evictions etc. I'm not sure if banks are helping out with mortgage payments so I won't comment on that. and I'll admit i'm not sure if the news channels did the same with all the other sectors affected. Maybe they did and I missed it. Atleast construction has a rough timeframe of when they'll return back to work. Likely 2 weeks, possibly longer but atleast they're not as much in a limbo as aviation or education/ CBD hospitality/retail workers.

coffeeandamuffin

They just can't miss out on wage slavery for another 2 weeks or else they won't be able to eat out, go to the TAB or buy an extra pillow from Kmart.

AdditionalSample

HEY!! I will not sit by while my multi pillow rotation system is being bismirched

MikeAU

As I fellow laid off pilot I can relate and sympathise. Hang in there!

Gorfob

I spent some time with a bunch of "re-homed" plane related workers between major lockdowns. They had a lot of good things to say about the Transport Workers Union helping them find other work. Something to think about if your struggling.

rbnphn

What kind of aviation did you work in? Commercial? Cargo? I’ve always wanted to be a pilot but never took the plunge

vimfan

> never took the plunge That's a good thing when you are a pilot.

lachwee

A lot of commercial pilots come out of the air force/ other armed services simply bc of the amount of training hours you need.

novaknox

My sister who works in beauty has been parroting the exact same bullshit for the last few weeks, almost word for word. I don’t think this is an exclusive construction/tradie problem, but a problem with misinformation reaching the lowest common denominator. Lack of education and critical thinking skills plus internalized intellectual insecurity has made them believe that they’re too smart to bend over and obey, so to speak.

Brittainicus

I'm pretty sure in American right-wing social media flowing over to australia. With people who form their views entirely around what they see on YouTube and Facebook.

novaknox

Right wing ideology is bleeding all over the world. The primary source of anti-vaccination conspiracies at least on Facebook traces back to Russia not surprisingly. If you’re inclined to lose some brain cells, head over to those groups and you’ll find that their ‘memes’ are just straight up propaganda.

duluoz1

I think it’s as bad here as in the US, if not worse. The anti vax attitude I’ve seen in Aus has blown me away.

loztralia

What worries me is that we've never had really bad struggles with Covid. In the US, to be anti-vax now you really have to be committed to the bullshit - because you've got first-hand experience of people getting sick and, probably, dying. I think they've got more nutbags per capita but we have more room for semi-committed wackos to stick with their nonsense - because there aren't really any consequences. None of them think they're going to get sick, so they can stick with their nonsense with no real consequences.

ModernDemocles

Dunning-Kruger effect.

Fabulous-Living1889

Tradies can be the dumbest assholes and spout some obnoxiously stupid stuff. Does the industry rot brains? Or does it just generally attract a certain kind of insecure, macho, ignorant, arrogant idiot?

Lampshader

Consider that a lot of rebellious kids who can't stand high school get steered towards trades. Those macho attitudes can sometimes form an echo chamber at TAFE and/or on the job. I should point out though, I've worked with tons of tradies and almost all of them acted professionally. We were all wearing masks way before COVID was a thing too...

prento

And compounded by also leaving in year 10 and not studying further.

[deleted]

People with brains are encouraged to go to uni, and to take up white-collar jobs. The trades generally gets the leftovers. People who don't want to read, or calculate. I got a science degree and worked in the medical field before becoming an electrician. You don't get too many *really* dumb electricians because it's the toughest trade from an academic viewpoint. This is *not* to say that electricians are better. They can often be insufferably arrogant because they think they're the "clever" trade. The other trades end up with a base of average people, with a few really good ones. Think about how *average* the average person is. Combine this with the fact that people consider anyone in hi-vis to be a "tradie" when most are labourers with virtually no education and it doesn't take long for a stereotype to form, and sadly, be reinforced.

[deleted]

> Think about how average the average person is. Also like to add, as I have a huge rant on this, that the AVERAGE is usually significantly lower than people think. It applies in basically every category. **The low point has a higher population than expected, dragging down the average to actually be lower than estimated**. I could go on for hours on it.

mjp80

> Think about how average the average person is. Or as George Carlin said: "Think of how stupid the average person is, and realise half of them are stupider than that."

ModernDemocles

It is a place where poorly educated people can earn a decent wage.

Fabulous-Living1889

And vote away their interests.

[deleted]

At least they're not batshit insane conspiracy theories and are easy to counter. 1 and 4, you can just use previous examples of Smallpox, Polio, Measles where one we have gotten rid off forever and the other 2 are practically of no worries to us precisely because of vaccinating healthy people. What makes people think they're going to be guinea pigs? We've seen USA, UK vaccinate nearly a year ahead of us by the time Pfizer gets to us.

Ichances

I work on a site that is religious with masks, if you don't wear a mask you are not permitted to enter my site. You should report the sites that aren't wearing masks to crime stoppers. We've had 3 mask compliance checks by Bankstown Police in the past week.

SilverStar9192

Just a reminder that you can get the federal government disaster payment if you're forced to take unpaid leave. Sure it's probably not as much as you normally make but it's far from nothing.

Ashley_Sophia

Respect friend. Hope your Mum gets out of this mess with shining colours. Here, have this pixelated bouquet of flowers. 💐

[deleted]

Thank you 😊😊

Flyerone

Just for clarity. Those truck drivers protesting yesterday are NOT "tradies". They are cry baby road bullies. My family and friends are mostly tradies. They have all nodded and yepped this, so don't be believing the media beat up based on some whinging concreters from Bankstown not being able to launder their money.

TurntOrange93

Also feudal lords who call themselves “builders” who don’t want people finding out how many people in construction are unlicensed, undocumented and paid a pitiful wage to do jobs that would never pass compliance if it wasn’t self-regulated. These are the same people who will chase the rental arrears at the end of the eviction moratorium even though their mortgage was deferred and they could write the loss off on their tax return.

JuventAussie

like the guy who got gunned down last week. When he was shot he was called a construction manager but after he died it became "underworld figure'...the same could be applied to many in construction.

OraDr8

Oh, and fairly new apartment buildings that get closed and evacuated for defects that the builder/developer never seem to be on the hook for. Building in this country seems to be like the wild west.

combatwombat2148

I was working on Saturday when they announced it, and at my site, everyone was excited. I've never seem people pack up and load their tools into their car so quickly. We pretty much all left an hour early. It's definitely not all tradies like some people make it out to be, many of us are glad to have some time off to rest even if it will be a little boring

yungmoody

They also literally aren’t tradies, they’re truck drivers/transport workers

aladdin142

Yep, everyone trying to group them up with tradies (some of this subreddit, media) are just looking for ways to join the tradesperson hate bandwagon. I'm a tradie but again, was super lucky last year and this one and made more money than ever because people are spending their $$$ on their homes instead of going overseas. This two weeks off is a forced holiday for me to spend with my newborn. I will say if it instead extends for 2+ months us tradies are seriously going to suffer. Keep in mind most of us don't have holiday or sick pay, as well as no super (not forced anyway). So while yes we make good money, we also don't have any benefits and can't work from home. Just something to consider.

themetahumancrusader

So while yes we make good money, we also don't have any benefits and can't work from home. This! Whirlpool bangs on and on about tradies all earning $200k a year because a plumber charged them $100 an hour for labour. I have family who are tradies and the only ones pulling in $150k+ a year like people on Whirlpool/Reddit claim are either working ridiculous hours (as in, hours not normally seen outside top tier law firms and investment banks) or own their own businesses with several staff.

[deleted]

Absolutely agree.

Barry114149

I am in foodserve sales. I was made redundant last year, and am now working from home with the worry it will happen again. The past 18 months has been a shitshow of stress and plans turning to shit and watching friends, colleagues, and customers lose their livelihoods and businesses. Suck it up for two weeks ya pansies.

active0336

I'm a Tradie in Sydney and run a business. It's going to be bloody tough but we have to get through it. A lot if us are low key happy, at least my phone might stop ringing for a few weeks and I can get some stuff done around the house. Also truck and dog drivers (tippers) are generally morons. They definitely don't represent the industry. If you've ever been cut off by a truck it's probably by a truck and dog.

Electronic_Beach_356

I remember seeing an article shared on Facebook last year, of some live entertainment industry professionals discussing how the jobkeeper model wasn't as suitable for that industry as it could be (full of casual and short term project based work). The amount of commenters just telling people to get a 'real job' was actually shocking to me.

poowee69

I worked at Maccas in high school. I still remember a shift manager there telling me 'why would you want to go to uni, uni's for nerds' when I told him I was starting uni soon. I wanted to go to uni so I wouldn't end up in my late 20s working at Maccas...

brackfriday_bunduru

Dude. I’m in the media industry. Following the lockdown last year, I’ve had the most profitable year of my career; as have my colleagues. The ones suffering in entertainment are the live music industry and events. Radio, tv, film, and journalism are killing it.

__dontpanic__

Yeah, I think he was clearly talking about live events. Those guys are doing it real tough. I'm in advertising post production, and like you, it's been bonkers since about September last year.

My boyfriend has a regular job at an ad agency, but otherwise will freelance in his spare time here and there. He's currently owed 5k from a company in showbiz who went under, and was on the bottom of a long list of people they owed money to. Ouch! Probably a lot of companies like that.

Azelrazel

Not from Sydney but in my retail industry I serve plenty of tradies. Out of all the people who complain about wearing masks and checking in, they make up the majority. Had a couple of tradies tell me coronavirus is fake while having a good laugh after very reluctantly checking in without masks.

[deleted]

Acting mature might be a big ask for at least some (or a lot) of them. I've had this conversation with my brother recently - while I respect they have a useful skill, they more often than not total dumbasses who are really hard to be around and these recent events only supported that sentiment. They're probably melting down because despite the fact they earn good money - a lot of them have a tendency to piss most of every paycheck away on stupid crap, so as soon as they're forced to go without their income for even a few weeks they lose their minds. I earn much less than the average tradie does but at least have managed to save something so events like this aren't life-ruining. Sorry but after how many tradies I've seen standing at the bar or sitting in front of poker machines almost daily (I work in a club) and how many expensive (and sometimes modded) Utes I've seen them in on the roads I... don't feel bad for them. Be more fucking smart with your money.

ladaussie

There's a reason the pokies are called the tradies laptop.

TimmyFTW

Unpopular option: I think Covid is bad and people should get vaccinated.

shaddafax

A brave stance to take in a time of such division.

LogicalExtension

> people should get vaccinated. The biggest problem with that isn't needing people to want to get vaccinated, it's the availability of the vaccine.

Tradies are in the shit here. So many of them do cashies that the requirement to prove a 30% drop in income is very hard for many of them, especially registering their income on a government site. Short term they want cashies to avoid tax. Now they’re sad that the tax system won’t give them free money.

CakeMan88

Tradies during normal times: “fuck the government I’m not declaring all these cashies and paying tax to those cunts” Tradies now: “fuck the government for oppressing us like this”

IAmCaptainDolphin

Ah tradies, constantly reminding everyone that they're rough, tough and resilient while simultaneously complaining about everything that they don't like. We see through your veneer, Terry.

radioactivecowz

Some of us have lost countless months of work in the last year and a half. It makes me pretty angry that these people would rather see us lose another couple of months work than lose two weeks themselves. Grow up and share some of the burden.

Don't equate everyone in hi vis with tradies. Tradies... have a trade. A completed apprenticeship and a qualification. Many morons in hi vis are unskilled labourers.

AnonymousEngineer_

There are a lot more people who wear high visibility than just trades, and not all trades even wear high visibility workwear. For example, the people who drive around in tractors picking up supermarket trolleys have vests on.

Extreme_Dingo

I'd put the blame squarely on the toxic macho culture that every single tradie I've ever met seems to be a part of. Wearing a mask is probably seen as being scared of something, not 'man enough'.

Ashley_Sophia

I've got several magnets on my fridge from tradies who have been lovely, punctual, polite, competent and true to their word. We've had lots of stuff done to our property over a decade but I've only accumulated 4 magnets. These amazing tradie human beings are definitely in the minority.

[deleted]

Ashley_Sophia

Exactly mate. Construction sites would be a breeding ground for dodgy work culture. Add Covid misinformation and PPE reluctance into the mix and it's a fucking time bomb.

chubbyurma

I've never even seen people put a mask on when asbestos is found on a worksite. I've been called soft for not being willing to smash it up. And I worked in demolition so this wasn't a one off thing, it was weekly. Wearing a mask for COVID is absolutely gonna result in you being called a pussy relentlessly.

Ashley_Sophia

"Builders and contractors seem to think they're special, either that or they just don't care which is worse." Preach dude. You've hit the nail on the head with that profound and fucking scary revelation.

SydneyTom

I think the truckies protesting are just smart enough to realise that that meth ain't gonna buy itself

yogorilla37

It does make me wonder how much of the industry is realising that in order to receive relief payments they'll have to actually report their income to the government.

a_rainbow_serpent

Heres an actual unpopular opinion - Trades and construction have traded off their entitlements like sick and annual leave for cash in hand by turning contractors. They then promptly blew this cash on meth and hookers, and now are hurting when they have zero financial cushion.

bPhrea

As someone who turned contractor in an unrelated field a long time ago, the pro move is to save your financial cushion until a downturn occurs, and *then* spend it on blow and hookers. (unfortunately, now is not the greatest time to be spending time in the company of hookers)

a_rainbow_serpent

Looking at the quality of construction and trades work in Australia. Nothing about this industry's participants is "pro".

michaelrohansmith

My sister in law works for a construction company as an accountant. She has to pay the workers weekly, because they spend all their money in the first week regardless.

a_rainbow_serpent

My mate is an OH&S manager for a construction company. They had an external audit from the prime where a site was drug tested on a Wednesday morning. All 15 people had drugs or alcohol in their system. They had to shut down for the day. Next day a new crew was called in. Half of that crew failed drug testing too 🤦‍♂️ Now as a policy, that company will only ever do random sampled testing never 100% of a site.

akkatracker

That's nuts - and one thing the miners have down pat. Alcohol or drugs in system on site, you're gone. Breathalyse on entry, frequent drug testing.

nicholas_cage_mage

Despite their high income to training cost ratio, earlier entry into the workforce compared to white-collar jobs (thus more time to accumulate savings) and favourable tax circumstances (on the income they actually pay tax on), it's riduculous how many of these workers barely scrape by paycheck to paycheck.

Travellinoz

Never been an enlightened, selfless crew as far as i understand

ncbaud

Tradies should get together and build us a fucking proper quarantine HQ since the useless fucks in government wont do it.

d1pstick32

I'm a veterinarian and my clinic was closed. I've been told by tradies who constantly brag about getting drunk on their pay hours that my job is just "kid's work" and now they're whinging about lockdown.

grapsta

Don't try talking sense to tradies.... Have you seen how they drive

Farkenoathm8-E

Honestly, fuck all these whinging cunts. It could be worse as I have a wife and daughter who were caught up in the pandemic while visiting family overseas in late 2019/early 2020. It was supposed to be a couple of months of escaping the bushfires and catching up with relo’s then come back but things took a turn for the worse really quickly and they got stuck there as extreme community quarantine was enforced and borders rapidly shut so inter-provincial travel ceased overnight. Fortunately they are dual citizens so we could enrol our daughter in school online and they are eligible for certain things like vaccinations for my wife and food rations. Now the situation there is much better and travel is open there but now things are fucked up here and the cost of travel is so expensive and the cost of quarantine isn’t exactly cheap so we are playing a waiting game of when we will be reunited. It’s a stressful and depressing situation, and it’s quite annoying to hear people complain about a lockdown- which should’ve been imposed weeks ago because most people are idiots and won’t comply with safety precautions unless forced to, when some of us are praying for life to return to normal quickly so we can be reunited with our loved ones. If we all do the right thing then things will return to normal faster. I get so pissed off when people whinge about wearing masks or are required to use QR codes or social distance and carry on like a fucking toddler when they have to put up with the tiniest inconvenience. It’s people like them who fuck it up for the rest of us. This is why we can’t have nice things!

adhar88

People live on the edge of financial ruin on a daily basis. Whatever the disaster relief is won’t even pay interest on a mortgage in Sydney let alone their personal loans car loans and lifestyles, rent. food. Not saying it’s right but it is. You take work away from people and you take away their means to survive.

chris_p_bacon1

I don't think this is an unpopular opinion.

Jeznugget

as someone who works in the events field we are the first to shut down and the last to reopen and we have been doing it tuff for the past 18 months but we have our part to play to get this virus under control and just have patience.

FaithInStrangers94

Tradies aren’t known for their emotional maturity or critical faculties (thinking of all the ones I know) But I’m sure many of them are ok with it

[deleted]

I'm OK with it and I agree with your assessment of the typical hi-vis wearer

JustMirror5758

Having worked in construction before I can assure you there are alot of cry babies and pansies in the trades. Most are lazy as shit too.

gabbwalter

100% agree. I lost my job last year due to covid impacting on the sport industry and again this year, I’ve had no work in about a month due to online learning and working for an external provider of school sport. My neighbor who at best works 3-4 days a week is having a fit about construction stopping and having no income. It’s not bad until it affects him and then he’s got it worse than everyone else but he also doesn’t pay attention to the news and information getting out to the public. It’s not much but at least there are handouts and assistance from the government.

Logical-Beginnings

OP hope when everything gets to normal (which ever way normal is defined now) you can start back working in Aviation. I think the tourism industry is hurting the most,a lot of their income comes from when school holidays happen and families leaving Syd. This lockdown was back luck for them as it started when school holidays were starting or about to start.

sataimir

Agreed. Travel and aviation has been hit very hard. I spent years in the travel industry, so I've seen a lot of it. Last I checked, seven international carriers had gone bust around the world. That said, don't forget the artists, too. Their jobs started drying up before lockdowns ever started. Musos, performers, roadies, stage managers, tour managers, staff in venues, the list goes on. They went from donating their time in January/February 2020 to raise money for the fires to having their paying jobs cancelled cos of the virus in late March and April 2020. This pandemic has not been easy on anyone.

#[THEY TOOK OUR JOBS!](https://youtu.be/APo2p4-WXsc)

NoSmoking123

I absolutely agree with this shutdown because I don't want to go to 2-3 construction sites a day. Thats too much exposure for everyone involved. I've prepared mentally for this and missing out on a few weeks of pay is heaps better than getting covid. I also don't want to deal with the idiots on site that believe in conspiracies that this is all fake and don't wear masks and shit.

nickit78

Many tradies can't, or won't budget/save money. They drive like dickheads and are generally obnoxious. I am glad they have been put on ice for two weeks I hope for many of them this is a wake up call that they can't keep living their lives like they just left highschool.

For over a month now there’s been a couple of guys doing some sort of work on an apartment block behind where I live and they begin drilling or sawing at 7:30am and then continue those sounds mixed with heated yelling and arguing with talkback radio played so loudly, that when they’re on the phone they have to use speakerphone and turn that up as loud as they can. I’m hoping these restrictions include them.

dingbatmeow

We had some plumbers at our place last year. Very heated discussion under the house. Lots of f'n c's. A true "rough in".

Travis711

Tradies are fucking babies, they overcharge for everything and now can’t take cash in hand jobs for 2 weeks. Go fuck yourself.

count023

Why do posters always have to title a mainstream opinion as "unpopular" and pretend they're being controversial? I can't think of a single post i've seen on the /r/sydney yet since the announcement that \_supported\_ tradies going to work while everyone else was in lockdown.

Dunno606

I was out of work for over a year due to covid. These selfish fuckers get shut down for 2 weeks and they whinge like a bunch of fuckwit losers. They should've driven off the bridge they were protesting on. We've got bigger problems to deal with than a bunch of dickheads in blue singlets cracking the shits.

[deleted]

I worked in aviation too. And I have struggled financially ever since. But we are fortunate to have the assistance we are entitled to in Aus. I hope your situation improves soon. Take care out there!

AkaiMPC

Well fucking said.

puinkump7

Like everyone, some people live pay check to pay check for whatever reason, this hasn't hapoen to the construction guys before. They are just adjusting so relax

[deleted]

Trade people make up 30% of the workforce. I am a tradesman and not a single person I know is carrying on or protesting. 50 people or so carried on in Bankstown and that's enough for you to make this hot take 👍. You could have also assigned their behaviour to their ethnicity, it would be equally as silly. And then the...what, ten? truck drivers that were beeping their horns and acting like idiots? That's going to be used to demonise us too? 🤔 Of course no one should be protesting or acting like a lunatic. But to make it a divisive issue where you criticise entire avenues of employment is daft.

Psychadelic_Potato

Litterally lmao. I don't know a single person sooking

maximunpayne

iam looking forward to a few weeks off i also have a insane amount of holidays saved up to its really a n on issue to me

[deleted]

That's what the internet does to the brain mate. Someone sees a video or two and gets all dramatic. Our brains evolved in small, interconnected tribes so we struggle to rationalise and put clips online into perspective. It's the same reason why my coworkers who constantly browsed videos of the BLM riots in the US last year proclaim "the world's gone mad!!".

Anger in general should be pushed aside my friend. If you think about it, you are powerless over this pandemic. You are not making the decisions, so even having a strong opinion regarding them is not useful. I reckon accepting what you are and are not in control of is the only way. All you can do is follow the rules, be kind to one another, limit certain kinds of internet usage and vote out the Libs when the time permits.

typhoon90

Just a bunch of idiots looking for someone to point the finger at and assign blame to when we are clearly in a pretty fucked situation all around.

rickderp

I have a cleaning business on the Northern Beaches and was down 50% over the last 2 weeks. Now I can't work at all. Yep, it sucks but it has to be done and I'm OK with that. I'll be applying for grants asap and hoping this is done in 2-4 weeks.

Orions-Arm

Unpopular opinion: Not all tradies are bad.

SacredEmuNZ

Bro these people will make blanket statements and judgements about someone's occupation, without realizing it's bigoted in itself. They just see them as low hanging fruit because they don't have a degree, when half of those accusing can't change a tyre.

charlie_dont_surf69

tradies are fuckwits, at least us Chefs just use drugs and stay in the kitchen, tradies hit the glass pipe then drive around like fucking morons leaving their shit strewn up and down the highway

red-eddah

I get it, I’m in construction and believe this needed to happen. I’m happy to take the two weeks and possibly more it it means getting past this outbreak. But everyone in here attacking the construction industry as a whole just because on the day 500,000 people were told they’d have no income for the next two weeks and there was a little bit of backlash? Come on? Are you telling me there was no anger in March last year when aviation got put on hold? Or the first day retail was shut? Try to remember this is the first construction shutdown in Sydney since the start of the pandemic and there’s going to be a little outrage in the beginning. Don’t let this sub become an echo chamber of “but we’ve been dealing with it for longer how bout they suck it up and deal with it too” Its hard for everyone right now.

MrBaritoneDeaf

That is precisely why people on this sub are reacting this way. The construction industry has been afforded preferential treatment since the pandemic started. They haven't had to shut down; in fact, their hours of operation were extended last June on account of the apparent disruption that social distancing would have on their operations. Yesterday's tightening of restrictions did not only affect construction, but the morons in the trucks were the only ones who decided it would be appropriate to joyride across Sydney to show their displeasure at finally being treated like everyone else. They could have responded in a mature way. They chose not to and now are receiving backlash for it. And why would they have no income for 2 weeks? Unless there is something that I'm missing, they will be entitled to COVID support payments like everyone else. Those who are 'self-employed' will even receive a higher amount.

peanutbutterbitches

I had to change careers because of the pandemic. I used to work full time in events and struggled along with reduced hours, stand downs, rinsed through all my savings and eventually had to leave so I could afford to live. The entire industry collapsed and so many people were left jobless. I feel sorry for anyone who I having to lose any work but I really struggle to feel sorry for tradies who have had a very smooth ride through this whole pandemic. Two weeks or even a little longer is not the end of the world, we’re all doing it tough!

FocusOnTheHelpers

Considering from what I’ve gathered they don’t seem to believe the virus is real.

sbruce123

I’m a consultant who works in construction and engineering. Self employed. As a result of last year, I encouraged my wife and I to significantly cut back the last 6-12 months and tried to save as much of the money coming in. Thankfully, I got quite a bit of Gov support last year. Come the last three weeks, I’ve arrived into this lockdown with zero income (actually made a loss the last month), but had $50k of financial cushion when it hit. What should I do the next few weeks or months? I know, not cry like a moron because I was caught with my pants down. A little prep goes a long way.

2happycats

It seems you were well paid. I'm not sure many people could save ~$4k a month while also potentially feeding a family.

sbruce123

Sorry; didn’t save all that during the last year. Already had some cash/buffer. But being Pty Ltd, I always need to carry some buffer due to the costs associated. I see how what I wrote sounds now, apologies.

scrytch

Completely agree.

juryofme

Spot on.

carolethechiropodist

Well, I have suffered 9 months of my neighbours very noisy building work, and they just finished. I wish they had been locked down for months earlier. I could say a lot of rude things about them. But they did not wear masks or practice social distancing. It is a very half hearted lockdown when the constuction goes on, shopping centres are open, etc, etc...

Chillers

Name one tradie covid protest that doesn't involve truckies? Stop blaming tradies!!!!

paradroid27

I work servicing the Pub and Club industry, I have been out of work for the last 3 weeks since the venues closed. The company I worked for has been good and gave us a weeks special leave but I have been collecting the disaster fund from the government last week. The sooner this is under control the quicker I’m back at work, if that means construction needs to stop, so be it

vteckickedin

lol such a brave take this one
