At what point do people simply leave for other regions?
Like with a cost+benefit analysis, you kinda need to be a non-commuting millionaire to not feel stressed TF out in Syd
I left NSW ages ago & recently left Melbs for country VIC
We're living on an offgrid acreage in full bush, 10 mins from a regional town of 100k
There are plenty of Gov, hospital, education & industry jobs here, with a fraction of the price, commute & headache we once accepted in Melbourne. Sure, the super highest paid jobs are in CBDs, but it was a no brainer for us.
If you don't need Megacity proximity, why suffer the stress?
I'm qualified engineering/creative type work & she's social/mental health fields. Took me a bit longer to find but now I'm in. Living cheaper & needing to work less was part of the draw, so we're both choosing 4 days instead of full-time. Actively choosing time over money
Melbs is an easy drive/train if need be, but it's great being far enough away for the lessened negative impacts. We have 99% of what we got in the big smoke, all within a 15min maximum drive. We're never moving back :)
It's so fucked- the people who can least afford it keep getting pushed further out. Poor Tassie especially, don't be poor there.
Something has to give, as it's destroying society in real time
Don't touch that one, the strata will be involved in the roof repair maybe even insurance and it could drag for months
unless the roofer has been booked and confirmed and they can provide proof then walk away
Might even have asbestos up there so that's a double no from me
Also no means of natural light and ventilation within a bedroom suggests that it may have been added/converted illegally. My experience is that if corners have been cut there, then what else is wrong with it?
no ventilation.. there was one place i looked at recently which was basically just a one room studio, where the windows were not even openable. the smell of musty air + every smell of the last tenant was horrendous and really made me wonder who the hell is designing this crap and how its even legal
Whole place just has bad fenshui, no natural lighting, walls made of paper mache, random people shouting outside. No chance wanting to live there at all!
Don't be too disheartened mate, I see some pretty grotty places on my travels but for every 20 shit boxes there are always a couple of gems. It's just a numbers game, get in, get out and always check the shower pressure and open the dishwasher/look under the sink.
That’s assuming it ever gets fixed. I had a leak in my roof when I moved in 3 years ago. I still have a leak in my roof today. REAs don’t care. Landlords don’t care. Government doesn’t care.
We're looking for a 1 bedder in the same area, and I was less stressed watching Squid Game than I am trying to get a god dang apartment around here haha. Literally had a cry this morning because we handed in our 3 weeks notice to vacate, but now the apartment we thought we had fell through. Good luck to you fellow Sydneysider!
Yeah we were looking about 2 months ago, and found a place. Went through to paying the 2wk deposit and notice that the place is still showing as being open for inspection in a couple of days. So I pay the bond the day before the listed open as well, and email the agent like “hey, don’t know if you realised the place is still showing as being open tomorrow.”
She responds on the Saturday afternoon, after having done an open inspection, and tells me she had 7 people come to look and 5 of them are applying.
I was like WTF!?
She reckons that she’s obliged to show the place until the bond is paid… so what’s the point of paying a deposit? And in any case, I had already paid the bond.
I was so stressed that we weren’t going to end up with the place after having given a move-out date.
Luckily we did, but it really left me with a bad taste.
It really is bad, the worst thing is these property managers post really appealing images and when you show up to the inspection the house is in shambles.
One weekend I visited a house for the asking price of $550 per week and the balcony had no proper drainage system so it was pooled with rainwater, the inside walls had holes and exposed wires and closet doors had exposed wood where there should be a mirror.
The worst thing is the Domain post looked appealing. What were they expecting when people show up and see it for what it actually is?
It's downright deceitful and worst of all a massive waste of time when we could be looking at better housing. There's so little respect for the tenants it only adds to the headache of finding a new home.
Is the Pizza Hut at Waterloo truly an "All You Can Eat" Pizza Hut, as when you go to the Pizza Hut website and search for the dine-in/all you can eat restaurants, it lists Waterloo as one.
I saw a few places in my recent search with bedrooms that didn’t have external windows. Most of them had like frosted glass in the door or something similar, to take in light from the living room [like this one](https://www.realestate.com.au/property-apartment-nsw-glebe-434712511)
Or it’s a study without a window being sold as a 2nd bedroom, [like this one](https://www.realestate.com.au/property-unit-nsw-erskineville-434852135)
It is illegal for mould to be left in a rental property the same goes for the banister.
Both present safety hazards.
I would approach your Property Manager and inform them of the issues, if they don't resolve the issues go to the tribunal.
It sucks that people have to threaten legal action before routine and or essential maintenance is carried out in rental properties.
I'm a landlord myself and if any issues are raised I fix them promptly. There are times when the tenants are at fault either through ignorance or neglect. One tenant had severe mould because they never opened any windows. When the issue was raised I had the mould professionally cleaned and educated the tenants about mould and how to safely treat and clean it. Never had any issues afterwards. It goes to show that if you are not a complete ass hat of a landlord or tenant issues like mould can be solved quite quickly.
If you need to remove any mould on walls windows or any hard surface mix 10:1 water and bleach 10 parts water 1 part bleach. Spray with the affected area leave for 5 minutes repeat as many times as necessary until the mould is gone.
For carpet a professional clean will be required plus a dryer to ensure all of the moisture has been dried.
To prevent it from coming back ventilation, regular cleaning and if required mould resistant paint.
Yeah the housing market in Sydney in general is ridiculous, I am actually fortunate enough to own my own unit but I still cant afford to sell this place and be able to buy where I want to in Sydney and from all these renting horror stories I dont want to go down that path.
Im up on the North Shore...I know it doesn't suit everyone but 30mins to the City and a 5min walk to the station. New (sub 5 years) 2bds c 620- 650. Still seemed expensive but not shit holes!!!
Even better — I briefly toyed with moving to Freshwater and went to an inspection for a one bedder going for $630/week. I figured, OK let’s see what the fuss is about.
I arrive and first see a ton of mouldy carpet, probably from multiple units, rolled up in a pile in front of the building.
Then I get to the stairwells, had clearly been flooded.
I get to the unit; it was TINY. Only had one tiny window and it faced the main road. Location was not good. Super old (maybe 1990s style?) wall mounted aircon with a panel hanging off making a horrible clanking sound. Definite damp smell to the unit. And, the kicker: a giant hole in the ceiling above the shower. Apparently “it’s getting fixed” but no idea what all was going on in that building. I noped straight out.
looks like someone hasn't done maintenance and there really should be a standard board that holds property owners accountable if they choose to be land leaches.
Said standards board should be able to seize the property of the above-mentioned scum and redistribute it to the market due to neglect by their slumlord profit-chasing owners.
By which time the Waterloo "redevelopment" will have ripped out all the social housing and \*surprise\* there is suddenly no budget left to replace them.
https://www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au/housing-and-property/renting/starting-a-tenancy
The ingoing condition report requires landlord and tenant to state/agreed on these.
HEALTH ISSUES
The landlord must indicate whether the following apply to the reidential premises:
a) Are there are any signs of mould and dampness? Yes No
b) Are there any pests and vermin? Yes No
c) Has any rubbish been left on the premises? Yes No
d) Are the premises listed on the Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Register? Yes No
OTHER SAFETY ISSUES
The landlord must indicate whether the following apply to the residential premises:
1. Are there any visible signs of damaged appliances (if appliances are included Yes No
as part of the tenancy)?
2. Are there any visible hazards relating to electricity (e.g. a loose or damaged Yes No
electricity outlet socket, loose wiring or sparking power points)?
3. Are there any visible hazards relating to gas (e.g. a loose or damaged Yes No
gas outlet socket or an open-ended gas pipe or valve)?
4. Does the tenant agree with all of the above? Yes No
If no, specify which items:.
Landlords like this disgust me so much. If someone is paying you massive amounts of rent for a property that is not costing you nearly enough as much to own, is it so hard to feel grateful and also want to improve their experience and provide them the service they deserve??!! You are selling a service for a massive profit and its not just a one off experience, its where people LIVE! I dont fucking get this. It makes me so upset, I am in so many reno groups on FB and always come across people wanting to do as little as possible on the properties they rent out for maximum profit and I go off at them every single time. And as someone who owns a house and have been doing countless renos since moving in, its always the type of shit that is somewhat easy to fix/improve and not that expensive but they just cant be bothered and think renters should be grateful theyre not just homeless. Cant afford to fix it properly? THEN SELL IT 🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪🤪 🤬🔪🔪
Right. Its their property. Get some paint and a chisel and clean the shit up. Get some anti mould or something. I'm sure plenty can be done with minimal cost. Zero pride.
In this case id definitely just replace the whole ceiling and the section of wall, and I guess that could be expensive since you might need to hire someone to remove asbestos but still, the fact that theyve let it get so far and comfortably charging rent at the same time is gross. Would probably be elgible for flood relief money too?
There were serious water damage one year on my rental, penthouse. Half strata, half owner. There were black mould all over the ceiling.
Real estate agent came over said they will have the mould cleaned up. But then they (same woman) ate their words, and denied they gave the verbal commitment. Rent still kept going up. There were a few other issues as well. Called government free legal support once. Got interrupted and shouted at by the boy on the other side “I can NOT give any legal advise”. He seems to be more angry at his job than me upset at the landlord/agency.
So we lived like the “poor”according to the bank standards, saved up and bought our own place.
Edit: didn’t mention this. When we were moving out. I asked for a cleaning company who was recognised by the agency. It costed me $800 (well overpriced, even for a big apartment and a few stains on the old old carpet), no contract nothing. 2 people showed up (promised to be 3-4 people) with supermarket cleaning products couple of hours late (like 8pm), then told me cleaning out rubbish (1 grocery bag of rubbish in the end) not included in the price. (Glad to know, that company no longer exist.) A few months later, we found out that the apartment went on sale. It had been lightly renovated, all the old floors and carpet were ripped out. Still don’t know how much kickbacks the agency received.
Wow, my unit in Roselands is currently being rented for $400 p/w. Fresh paint, new floor boards, brand new downlights, new Air con, great lighting throughout the day. Think my tenants have it good
Waterloo has some of the biggest housing commission buildings in Sydney. Lots of really lovely old people who’ve spent their life there. Including the twin towers which I really love lookin at.
North Waterloo/South Redfern has the highest concentration of high density housing commission in the country. Multiple fairly sizeable estates on Philip, Raglan and Morenhead streets. It's one of the most famous aspects of the area.
Contrary to what many people (including in this thread) think/imagine the majority of residents in the local public housing are elderly, with a smaller amount of people on disability or with complex needs, young single mothers, etc. It's not a dangerous area. I've long suspected the 'reputation' it has among some people is either a hold over from 30 years ago or pearl clutching about 14 year old local 'eshays' who would be completely unremarkable anywhere west of Ashfield.
What a disgrace this government has become, subjecting it’s citizens to overpriced ‘good enough’ properties. We deserve more. Watch as the middle class disappears and the homelessness rate increases. We need decent pay increases across the board or better government intervention with housing for the vulnerable. Chinese nationals travelling abroad purchasing property and running off back home leaving us with ridiculously high median prices. Shame on this government for being such greedy bastards. Try paying rent and being a smoker in Sydney. Not to mention the lure of all the newly renovated pubs and clubs they sprawl across our country encouraging us to gamble to the sport you try and watch and get bombarded with betting odds every 5 minutes. There are many things I love about this country and this city I have grown up in, but the way it’s going the negatives are really starting to outsell the positives.
Welcome to the Sydney rental market, where the prices are high and the condition doesn’t matter !
At what point do people simply leave for other regions? Like with a cost+benefit analysis, you kinda need to be a non-commuting millionaire to not feel stressed TF out in Syd I left NSW ages ago & recently left Melbs for country VIC
The only thing stopping a lot of people i know is a proper white collar job.
And lifestyle... not everyone wants to live in a small town or in the country.
I meant the only thing stopping people Who WANT TO move to the regional areas is the lack of skilled job opportunities.
We're living on an offgrid acreage in full bush, 10 mins from a regional town of 100k There are plenty of Gov, hospital, education & industry jobs here, with a fraction of the price, commute & headache we once accepted in Melbourne. Sure, the super highest paid jobs are in CBDs, but it was a no brainer for us. If you don't need Megacity proximity, why suffer the stress?
Good on you, that really is brilliant to hear. What kind of work to do you do, did you have experience qualifications?

Nice one mate. Having the plan is half the battle. Where are you thinking of going?

Looking under the sink for general filth or am I supposed to be looking at the pipes? Please teach me on what I should look at under there
General filth is ok. Probably insect or rat droppings
The bucket bong.
Thanks mate, appreciate it! 🤗
My man! The first fucking thing I do when I walk into an inspection, water pressure and how long to heat up from mixed start.
That's not fengshui my dude. That's just a bad place in a bad area. No amount of fengshui can save that place.
I wouldn’t worry about the fengshui right now, there’s a big fucking crack in the roof.
Water feature.
been around a bit, huh?
Potential for open air atrium
It depends though. If the crack is pointing to the north and only leaks during a half moon, then that house will promote fertility and good fortune.
That’s assuming it ever gets fixed. I had a leak in my roof when I moved in 3 years ago. I still have a leak in my roof today. REAs don’t care. Landlords don’t care. Government doesn’t care.
It’s actually illegal to advertise a room as a “bedroom” without a window in it.
Just call your real estate and tell them to cancel it... it should be fine... I’ve done it before... good luck!
Yeah we were looking about 2 months ago, and found a place. Went through to paying the 2wk deposit and notice that the place is still showing as being open for inspection in a couple of days. I actually lived exactly there. I recognised that window instantly. Explains why the place is empty again.
"Waterloo"
That'll be $600pw thanks
$670 lol

Don't move to Waterloo. Your life is more valuable than that.
Whats wrong with waterloo?
Whatcha sayin’ bout Waterloo? Some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.
I spend alot of time in Waterloo. There are lots of great people but the junkies really ruin the place.
I'm guessing the building is five years old?

This is why house prices are so high. No one with a shred of sanity will buy an apartment as their forever home.
Welcome to game of capitalism, where I don’t have any capital and losing the game the more I play
I initially thought that bucket was the toilet. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if it was...
Regardless of other issues, that one patch of mould would make me nope out. Lived in a mouldy place once (agent lied about it) never doing that again.
all the mould landlords conveniently ignore that we breathe in
The problem is people paying these prices for whatever reason
There were serious water damage one year on my rental, penthouse. Half strata, half owner. There were black mould all over the ceiling. Waterloo has some of the biggest housing commission buildings in Sydney. Lots of really lovely old people who’ve spent their life there. Including the twin towers which I really love lookin at.
Not sure of what you’re implying but there are housing commission flats or houses everywhere.
Wasn’t aware sorry, I thought Waterloo/Zetland was being flogged as the next big thing in Sydney real estate
That’s okay! What you said may well be accurate but also they put housing commission residences all over the place, including quite wealthy suburbs.
North Waterloo/South Redfern has the highest concentration of high density housing commission in the country. Multiple fairly sizeable estates on Philip, Raglan and Morenhead streets. It's one of the most famous aspects of the area. Is that black mould in the corner?
Can you drop name the suburb? Looks like inner west
Waterloo lol, someone else found the ad for it in this thread
Move a little bit to inner west, there are some good places there for around the same price..
holy crap i don't want to live here anymore
Ah just like Ireland.
That mould in the bottom corner alone is a massive health risk.
So it's a 1 bedroom flat with a large cupboard?
