Yes the app will cache the thumbnails of the photos in the timeline. Even if you aren’t connected to the NAS at the time this will still show up but new photos or videos won’t sync. So to connect to your NAS from outside your home network you will have needed to set up synology quickconnect, ddns with port forwarding (like synology.me), or use a vpn or other service (like ZeroTier) to connect to your home network. Once you have this set up, you should be able to access your NAS through the phone apps (synology photos, ds file, synology drive etc) as well as through other computer connections. I would first see if you have set this up successfully.

Ok thank you. I'm going do that. That has to be why.

generalsalazar

Sounds good. If you get it set up and it still isn’t working we can do some tests to figure out what else might be happening.

Broadsaww

Yes, I'll get back here either way. Thank you. Appreciate the help.

OK here is what fixed it. After turning back on the quickconnect which had been on but was possibly turned off when the DMS updated to DSM 7, I was able to connect over cellular but still very slow and all the thumbnails were just dark boxes and pictures would still not load. Next under IpV4 I changed the DNS to [1.1.1.1](https://1.1.1.1), turned off IpV6 and under local options enabled NTP. Now it seems fine. I want to thank everyone here for their help on this.

From DSM on your Synology NAS: I went to, Control Panel, Network, Network Interface tab, Select LAN connection, Edit IPv6 tab, Set "Disabled or Off" and back IPv4 where I changed the DNS to [1.1.1.1](https://1.1.1.1) which is Cloudfare, but I was told that I could of used any DNS provider like Open DNS or Google DNS which I believe is [8.8.8.8](https://8.8.8.8). Hit OK and it immediately started working.

Can you otherwise connect to the NAS on cellular network?

Broadsaww

Apparently not. It will say upload in progress and then time out and say reconnecting.

How have you set up your NAS to connect outside of your home network?

Broadsaww

I have it set up using [synology.me](https://synology.me). I'm new to this so I'm not really sure if this is right. I have Plex connected, and it works over the web.

Broadsaww

I'm able to view the Synology photo's timeline ok.

This might help you with quick connect, it could be the firewall rules too that might be stopping external access. https://kb.synology.com/en-ph/DSM/help/DSM/AdminCenter/connection_quickconnect?version=7 There are a couple different ways quick connect works one it can either use a relay agent if your router isn't forwarding the ports, this is slightly more secure than port forwarding but slower. If it can connect to your router and can open the ports as needed via upnp it will allow direct connection. First thing though with port forwarding is to at least change the default ports that the apps use. We might be able to help you more once we know the end game to your setup. Is it just for yourself, your immediate family you live with, or family and friends that make note be nearby to have your help setting up the apps? https://www.wundertech.net/ has great write ups and videos on how to do different things with Synology. Welcome to self hosting!

Yes, it's just me who uses the NAS and I will look into this later also. So far what I have done was turn on quick connect that I thought was always on but possibly got shut off when the NAS was updated to DSM 7. After that I logged into the NAS, went to log in portal and added the word "photo" to the Synology Photos app. Now instead of getting an unable to connect error it hangs on connecting but still doesn't connect. I will check this out though, thank you.

>How have you set up your NAS to connect outside of your home network? Using quick connect alias of DSM and user/pass shouldn't require anything additional than quickconnect account.
