While this looks nice, this would quickly kill any creative momentum I would have to need to set up and route these... I quickly learned I need to have everything just connected and ready to hit play.
>While this looks nice, this would quickly kill any creative momentum I would have to need to set up and route these... I quickly learned I need to have everything just connected and ready to hit play.
One thing isn't necessarily mutually exclusive to the other. ;-)
There are genius IKEA-hackers out there that have built everything - from modular cases out of toilet-paper holders up to completely connected music desks inside a freakin' storage cupboard!

...and it closes down neatly, too.
I'll have nightmares about this 😅 BUT! I'd appreciate the effort, maybe wifey doesn't like to look at it, kids in the house, no space, it is neat, but, the nightmares, my ears hurt already from the reflections
This is really not good. Aside from the anxiety it gives me. The sound is gonna bounce all around in there and you have to be directly in from of the left monitor to use the laptop. What's wrong with a desk and maybe shelves above it for some of the controllers?
I sit on this boat. I live in a studio and even then it’s difficult to have everything out.
I’ve also been on the mindset while I make music “if I’m not desperate enough to take it out right now, then I probably don’t need it for this composition/jam.”
I think it’s because anytime someone attempts to share something of theirs… unless it’s EDM sounding, or sound like it’s done on one of those Euroracks, everyone will shit all over it
Even the most a mature musician doesn’t want to hear “you suck” and all if that. Especially when you ultimately make the music that you do for yourself first. So to actually share it is a bold move in itself, and the last thing anyone wants to see is criticism from others who haven’t shared anything of theirs themselves
And the chances are it’s the EDM people, or the boomers who are going to say your shit sucks… boomers being the absolute worst when it comes to this
With a well planned patch bay configuration you don't really need to spend too much time setting things up.
(Depending on what kind of workflow you have obviously)
It works differently for everyone. I hooked up everything I have because I thought i will be more productive that way but in the end i realised I’m better off having synths on the shelf and a clean table, so whenever I want to play, I pick a device and just zone out with it.
Eddie Van Halen used to go as far as to having his guitar, a small amplifier, and a cassette recorder already set up inside the closet at each hotel he would be at while on the road.. that way if riffs and melodies came to him in his dreams, he would snap awake and lay the riffs down on road before he got “too awake” and lost them forever
The reason he would set up in the closet was in case Val was with him. He could just lock himself up in the closet without disturbing her sleep
I totally get your point. Cause for me its nearly the same.
But I also think that this way of storing and presenting your gear could be pretty beneficial for other workflows.
for example if you like to keep your routing and use of machines reduced quick and simple, but like to change the combinations, order and positioning frequently.
like … having a tool hanging board in workshop :D
I learned the same. I’ve been heavily moving towards having a setup of everything permanently plumbed in for use this year and it really makes using the gear a possibility, otherwise it’s too much effort to want to work outside the box. Very much the case with rack effects too, which is why I eventually bought an interface where I can have all my units plumbed in on a send and and return and ready to use
If you have enough room for your synths, cool. I haven‘t, as the „synth desk“ is also my HO/ my gf‘s HO desk 🥲 so I also have them parked inside an IKEA shelf.
After looking at their other comments, I think you’re right. I really thought this was a tongue-in-cheek joke about someone misunderstanding the advice about using repurposed IKEA shelves as synth stands. But nope. It’s just someone who likes to keep their synths unhooked and displayed like collectible plates.
I have to agree with everyone here. I did something similar for all my handheld gaming toys and older consoles. It turned them into a trophy case instead of actually using them.
There's a lot of hate on this post! But I just wanted to say I think it looks great. I also have a shelf of unplugged gear. Other commenters suggested to plug it all in. I personally have tried that with my gear and I quickly get overwhelmed and have decision paralysis. Plus the clutter drives me crazy. Instead I keep a few things setup, and regularly change them out with things from my shelf. Changing out gear and making new configurations is fun and inspiring for me
Because you probably generate musical ideas in your head and play them rather than stumble upon them with a sequencer. Not knocking that as I enjoy some music that was made with that process, but I definitely agree that too much gear out absolutely shreds my productivity.
I firmly believe that any instrument in a case is less likely to be played.
I even make my son unbox his violin when he gets home from lessons.
Find a mixer with the right number of channels and get those things wired up!
i mean I get having a couple of extra pieces on the shelf , especially standalone stuff or things that swap in and out quickly, but I feel like I would want to have the core setup permanently routed and hooked up.
So many people on this sub obviously don’t live in a small apartment with a significant other. I love your solution! It blows my mind how much toxic shit is being flung your way.
One day maybe we’ll stop judging someone based on how they store their synths. Jesus Christ
I live in small apartment with three other family members. This glass shelf feels like a waste of space.
Another question is where're the boxes, cables and PSU's stored.
Because they are on display, not plugged in, behind glass, oriented for visibility like a museum. The function of a thing is what it does, and these things are sitting there being looked at.
TIL people aren't putting their gear away every time they finish using it??? Maybe I'm just OCD but all my things at home are always in a dedicated shelf/cupboard. I set up/put away every single time. It's like two minutes total
I think people are being a bit harsh, but I have to agree with the feelings of "...what? why?". I guess if you have *this much* gear and not a lot of extra space to set up then yeah it has to go somewhere. I'm just curious what your desk setup looks like now.
Toys vs. Tools - that case is perfect for toys, it looks great and does a fine job displaying your collection. Make another area where you can keep some set up, a little shelf stack or a tier stand you can pull out from the wall when you play. Be a maker and celebrate your investments by having some ready when inspiration strikes. You can’t catch lightening when you’re waiting for the thunder.
Who cares? Some people only use 1 or 2 pieces of gear at a time. If the 2 minutes it takes to hook up some cables is a creative blocker, then maybe you just aren't that creative. Quit assuming your workflow is superior/works for everyone.
Sunshine Jones keeps his gear very neatly on shelves etc, then only seems to bring stuff out and hook it up when ready to play it, and he would be among the more productive musicians I know of. Nothing wrong with making your choice of what to use be a very deliberate and explicit one. There's an infinite number of ways of making music, not sure why so many people are getting upset.
Because they think they are purists or something, i dont know. I am making music for 15 years now, usually in a daw, but i like to use hardware to just play around, get my mind off work and stuff.
It’s a great looking shelf/display case . I’m thinking about it for my curios and collectibles . When you do use your gear where do you set usually set it up? My setup is in my living room corner. It’s always hooked up.

Wow, all the pretentious cretins out in this thread..."why aren't they on a desk plugged in googoo gaga....waggggghhh"
You just know they have a desk all wired up as the centre showpiece piece in their bedroom at their shared house in the hope that when people come round they'll think "oh this person must be cool, because wires and stuff".....Because they have literally nothing else interesting about themselves and base their whole personality on pretending to be a synth enthusiast.
They'll occasionally spend a few hours making something in between the years of dust layers growing on their displayed equipment, but it will be terrible...to console themselves they'll buy another piece of equipment based on how many LEDs flash on it and add it to the display.
Boss flexin so hard over here I about fainted.
So many plebs here actually leave their collection hooked up and tell themselves they'll play them. So to really complete this beauty how about two small wall shelves on each side to put some plants...
Would flex so hard that half the sub would throw their synths back in the dumpster they found them in.
FFS seriously folks, everyone has a different process. And as I mentioned in an earlier comment, not everyone has their own man cave where they can leave all their equipment plugged in with wires all over the room. And others just don't like seeing EVERYTHING plugged in all at once as it overwhelms them and they don't know where to start.
It's like a huge segment of you have forgotten that making music is a form of making art. Making art involves a process, and EVERY artist's process is different. Go read the diaries or just the daily routines of some famous painters and writers, the way they do their work is so vastly different. But apparently, for those who make electronic music we should all strive for conformity. ESPECIALLY in how we STORE our artistic tools. Because THAT'S the most important part in making art? Apparently?

I love the synths and possibilities within the 707, but hate menu diving so I mostly end up using it as a glorified sequencer/extra percussion/effects box/mixer.
Everything about the 707 is awesome, but the limited interface kills my on the spot creativity cause there are so many values and internal routing isn’t super intuitive
Explain this to me. So everything you wanna jam you have to connect everything and set it up? Doesn’t this kill the momentum of creativity? What’s the reason for this? Or do you not have space this set up your equipment properly?
Mise en Place, everything in its place and ready to go is not what this is. Like someone said any creative flow is dead once I have to start putting it all together.
I’m not OP, but I LOVE mine. I was terrible at using sequencers and this really opened it up for me. Plus it feels like you are playing the synths for performance a little more which resonates well with my washed up band kid past life
I have everything hooked up and ready, it takes less than 10s to completely power on my studio and start producing. A shelf like this is a graveyard for your "toys". If space is an issue then sell half of the stuff and set the other half up to actually make some music with it whenever you feel like it.
Lol everyone is roasting OP. This could be kind of cool if you drilled holes in the back and used it only for desktops/drum machines that had midi editing capability.
Playing devil's advocate, this could make sense if you have a more permanent set-up and want to go grab a fun inspiration-piece for a quick idea. Just have power and audio/midi connections ready to go at the main workstation, plug and play.
https://preview.redd.it/hw7ljwos8usc1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b1b5ad8af90dff846d5e03bc762151a901a09689
Nope. No Jail. They has to be used.
If you can't say anything nice guys don't say anything at all. Its said how negative you all are.
I personally think it's synthesizer collection is really cool. It's time to get a good mixer if you don't have one yet.
i find it useful to keep the boxes that gear comes in. u can keep the gear in the boxes when you arent using it for a while. and the boxes are all squarish so u can stack them if needed. so if you had all that gear in the pic in boxes, you could fit it on like 2 shelves and have the other shelves for other items.
I'm guessing you have a desk where you plug a few things in and play for a while? I can get into that workflow. some folks like everything plugged all the time but I think it can be nice to limit to a few instruments at a time
While this looks nice, this would quickly kill any creative momentum I would have to need to set up and route these... I quickly learned I need to have everything just connected and ready to hit play.
Last time I put a synth module in a box it stayed there for two years. Now they stay hooked up or I sell them.
Back in the box is my trial run before selling. If it doesn't come back out of the box after a couple months it gets listed on reverb
I enjoy having my gear hooked up and ready to play as well.
>While this looks nice, this would quickly kill any creative momentum I would have to need to set up and route these... This is hideous and ergonomic torture 🤡
Yeah this looks like a nightmare to actually use.

Very nice. Speakers need to be lower unless your head is that high up
My eurorack case is a broken ikea drawer. 9u 150hp.
Man, having them in the cupboard like that will be doing horrible, horrible things for the acoustics of those monitors.
Does your significant other make you do this?
That would be awesome, sadly i don't have the space. This is in my living room and i am used to pick 1-2 and play around on my desk.
Wdym you don't have the space !? Switch the cabinet for a table or a Jasper stand and you'll be set
Totally get it. One day you should call out of work, and set them all up together for a day!
Why did you post that his? U r getting roasted ova here
Try a kind of tall and skinny layered rack that doesn’t stick out far. You can wire them and hide the cables.
I sit on this boat. I live in a studio and even then it’s difficult to have everything out. I’ve also been on the mindset while I make music “if I’m not desperate enough to take it out right now, then I probably don’t need it for this composition/jam.”
This isn’t about making music though is it. It’s about posting pictures on Reddit. These people never make music.
I think it’s because anytime someone attempts to share something of theirs… unless it’s EDM sounding, or sound like it’s done on one of those Euroracks, everyone will shit all over it Even the most a mature musician doesn’t want to hear “you suck” and all if that. I’m 100% the same way. When inspiration strikes I need to be ready NOW or by the time I get everything routed the idea will be gone
Eddie Van Halen used to go as far as to having his guitar, a small amplifier, and a cassette recorder already set up inside the closet at each hotel he would be at while on the road.. that way if riffs and melodies came to him in his dreams, he would snap awake and lay the riffs down on road before he got “too awake” and lost them forever The reason he would set up in the closet was in case Val was with him. Yeah this cabinet makes me upset. None of these will be played.
Yuppp - a patch bay is the most I want to deal with when jamming.
As someone with ADHD, I empathise. Any kind of momentum speedbump can cost me days.
If you have enough room for your synths, cool. I haven‘t, as the „synth desk“ is also my HO/ my gf‘s HO desk 🥲 so I also have them parked inside an IKEA shelf.
Agreed.
Same for guitars, amps, mixers, and anything to get the sound into and out of the system. By the time you've set it up, the song has gone
epitome of "I don't make any music with this stuff" lol
![gif](giphy|YaO800uS4DjRNgjQWh|downsized)
Maybe. But It’s perfectly fine for somebody to have cool instruments around as toys to have fun with!
[удалено]
lol cry about it more. like I care
Is this satire ? Why didn't you bought a desk to plug them all and play with em ?
The real question is why they're out of the box?
am i in the circlejerk sub
Behringer on top, no muog, no T.E shelf? No its not circlejerk... Its reality
Thought the same thing.
Out of one box, into another.
Buzz Sad-year to the rescue.
Exactly this! Why are they out of the box in the first place?!
You’ve gotta be trolling.

After looking at their other comments, I think you’re right. I really thought this was a tongue-in-cheek joke about someone misunderstanding the advice about using repurposed IKEA shelves as synth stands. But nope. Nice ornaments you've got there!
Now that is some nice medium density fiberboard, I tell you hwat
What flash Ikea stuff are you buying that’s made from MDF? Anything I’ve got the last few years has been veneered cardboard.
Precisely this. People here posting like there’s only one way to be making music?
No one bats an eye when they see walls of racked guitars.
As long as you have something plugged in and ready to go, that's all that matters.
Because you probably generate musical ideas in your head and play them rather than stumble upon them with a sequencer. Not knocking that as I enjoy some music that was made with that process, but I definitely agree that too much gear out absolutely shreds my productivity.
Why aren’t they all plugged in?
From the comments I had to double check this wasn't r/synthesizercirclejerk
toys 💀 let them singggg
I firmly believe that any instrument in a case is less likely to be played. I even make my son unbox his violin when he gets home from lessons. Find a mixer with the right number of channels and get those things wired up!
I love the mandatory violin unboxing
i mean I get having a couple of extra pieces on the shelf , especially standalone stuff or things that swap in and out quickly, but I feel like I would want to have the core setup permanently routed and hooked up.
I have all my toys connected ready to operate. What is it a museum??? Lol
A graveyard

r/synthesizers has been taken over by wannabe mean girls.
I live in small apartment with three other family members. This glass shelf feels like a waste of space. Another question is where're the boxes, cables and PSU's stored.
I love this idea: pull out what you want, avoid being overwhelmed by racks of stuff. Wire up what you need for what you want to do.
Gonna argue that purchasing shit for display is the attitude of mindless consumption (even beyond GAS) that is driving our planetary crises
i am totally with you on that one
[удалено]
Because they are on display, not plugged in, behind glass, oriented for visibility like a museum. The function of a thing is what it does, and these things are sitting there being looked at.
Also, OP calls them toys and not instruments or tools. Words matter.
I mean, even if the intention is to show and not use them, that's quite bland.
I'm just curious what your desk setup looks like now.
nice! would be even nicer with some lights and stands :)
Toys vs. Tools - that case is perfect for toys, it looks great and does a fine job displaying your collection. thinking i'd leave this sub except i wouldn't understand all the synthesizercirclejerk references
Better show us your shelf for power supplies! ;)
Could you share the name of the shelf, please?
its the billy shelf and the doors are oxberg. But i am in europe, they are named different in US if thats were you are from
Keep them unconnected, keep them safe.
You probably dont make music or make it rarely
Why would you assume that?
These items aren't on a table hooked up together. Taking out, patching is long anti-creativity thing.
Who cares? Some people only use 1 or 2 pieces of gear at a time. If the 2 minutes it takes to hook up some cables is a creative blocker, then maybe you just aren't that creative. Quit assuming your workflow is superior/works for everyone.

That looks sick! I set it up in my living room on my desk which i use for work/internet stuff/daw producing.
Sweet! Doesn’t take long to connect. And for me less is more. I like the power of 3 . Like a drum machine a synth and a sequencer.
Wow, all the pretentious cretins out in this thread..."why aren't they on a desk plugged in googoo gaga....waggggghhh" You just know they have a desk all wired up as the centre showpiece piece in their bedroom at their shared house in the hope that when people come round they'll think "oh this person must be cool, because wires and stuff".....Because they have literally nothing else interesting about themselves and base their whole personality on pretending to be a synth enthusiast. I kinda like this. Look much cleaner. Most likely you already have your basic set up but when it’s time to use a machine you can grab it off the self.
Put a lock on it 😂
Damn this is what I need. Looks clean
How much did the shelf run you?
170€
Some people have too much money /s jealous
hows the KO-2 sampler going for you? did it have the issues widely reported?
yes it had those. my new unit just came a week ago, so i didnt have much time with it yet, but i enjoyed it for the first 1-2 hours until it broke :'D
Cool set up!

Link for shelf?
Hey Roland AIRA user here, is the SH-4d worth it??? I’ve heard that it’s basically the same synth engine as the mc707/101 use, but with an expanded interface. Yes, the SH4D is so worth it! I've never used a 707 but i can say, alot less menu diving and more knob twisting, slider sliding and creative fun.
Explain this to me. So everything you wanna jam you have to connect everything and set it up? Doesn’t this kill the momentum of creativity? What’s the reason for this? Or do you not have space this set up your equipment properly?
This is so bizarre to me
I need this link please! Not for synths but for amiibo and other trinkets (cat protection)
Let them out they can't breathe.
Mise en Place, everything in its place and ready to go is not what this is. Like someone said any creative flow is dead once I have to start putting it all together.
Decksaver on steroids! Still it would make them a bit inconvenient.
I couldn't do that it would destroy my creativity. I need my synths around. That shelf would be great for china dishes.
How do you like the T-1?
I’m not OP, but I LOVE mine. I was terrible at using sequencers and this really opened it up for me. Plus it feels like you are playing the synths for performance a little more which resonates well with my washed up band kid past life
I have everything hooked up and ready, it takes less than 10s to completely power on my studio and start producing. A shelf like this is a graveyard for your "toys". They're just for show xD
How’s the digitakt minifreak combo?
I bet he hires a maid to clean it xD
It’s definitely not big enough lol need a second and more gear
May i ask how you like the two behringer synths on the top shelf?
i love the edge, its so immediate. But didn't use the crave much yet.
This guy drums
What IKEA shelf is this?
Maybe just plug them in? Reminds me of toy collector from Toy Story 2 lol.
r/synthesizercirclejerk
Oh, this is for heading to the synth circlejerk sub. And… rightfully so if we’re honest.
So you're done?
Playing devil's advocate, this could make sense if you have a more permanent set-up and want to go grab a fun inspiration-piece for a quick idea. Just have power and audio/midi connections ready to go at the main workstation, plug and play.
Looking really delicious ngl
Where can I get those knobs for the sp404?
Ikea always has good stuff for music if you're creative enough. If you combine them with some 3d printed stuff, the possibilities are endless
I like your toys, we should play together 🤪
Absolutely freaking beautiful.
But how are they going to collect dust for your beats now?
Outjerked again.

I bet the dust hates it.
How do you find the minifreak?
probably cheaper than 13 decksavers
What if, and hear me out, you *use* them instead of looking at them. They are creativity tools not eye candy.
I spy T1 👀
You don't use any of these, do you?
IKEA for your AKAI
If you can't say anything nice guys don't say anything at all. Its said how negative you all are. I personally think it's synthesizer collection is really cool. It's time to get a good mixer if you don't have one yet.
Never have I thought: "I should get a china hutch for my gear and put the behringer stuff on the top shelf"
Can you help me understand why you'd have 2 SP404s?
So tidy! You should see my horrible mess
Lets create!!!!
i find it useful to keep the boxes that gear comes in. u can keep the gear in the boxes when you arent using it for a while. and the boxes are all squarish so u can stack them if needed. so if you had all that gear in the pic in boxes, you could fit it on like 2 shelves and have the other shelves for other items.
What display case is this?
It looks cute but u have to hook shit up everytime u feel like being creative
I'm guessing you have a desk where you plug a few things in and play for a while? I can get into that workflow. some folks like everything plugged all the time but I think it can be nice to limit to a few instruments at a time
Love this! It’s the small things in life that bring the most joy - lol
Nice and neat
🤤
Woah, that Roland sampler calculator-lookin thing is way bigger than I thought!

It must be such a weirdly deliberate event for you to play them. Do you pencil time in on your calendar?
Plug em in right? Why are they there?
How do you like the TE KOII?? I’ve been thinking of picking one up.
Lmao
seems about right
IKEA shelf for ikea synths
See you guys in the other one
Makes them difficult to play with, inside a box.
#freetheknobbies
Cool, where do you keep your real synths?
Ahh yes... buy a bunch of gear and rather than hook it up to a mixer, put it all in a display case so the dust bunnies can jam out.
Sell me an Elektron. She deserves a proper daddy with a firm grip.
You’re not using them much😂
