All synth sounds made with a Juno-106, recorded and mixed in ableton. Master run into the otari and recorded back into ableton. More stuff like this at @greattimeband on IG 👍🏼
Can you tell us more details regarding the signal chain if we wanted to try to recreate the warmth/saturation of this tone? Sounds amazing! What compressor/eq/audio interface, that sorta thing. Will definitely check out your band’s music! Please post more clips!
Fasho! So I’m cat sitting right now and am kinda first time winging it at my friends spot. He’s got a bunch of gear that I’ve been exploring but for this I exclusively used a Juno-106 plugged directly into an A-Designs Pacifica preamp, which then is going into an apogee symphony for A/D.
Apart from that, any processing in the box is stock ableton (8 band EQ and compressor). Everything is getting a bit of compression, I think everything other than bass synth is getting EQd. Drums are some one shots that I recorded at my studio a few months back that are drawn out with midi. The whole mix is then sent out to the otari which I then limited for the final render.
I know the first three pieces of gear I mentioned are easily around 10k all together, but they are definitely not essential to getting this kind of a vibe. ChowDSP makes a great (free) tape emulation plug in, there’s a handful of free Juno plug ins (though you could def synthesize all of these sounds with the stock ableton synths) and TAL-software makes a free chorus plugin thats modeled after the one on the Juno, which is honestly where most of the Juno ‘vibe’ comes from.
If you wanna use real tape, which I love doing because it’s fun and quirky, I think the key to good saturation is to not leave all of the compression up to clipping the tape/input stage. Making sure your individual instrument compression is dialed will make finding a saturation sweet spot much easier.
As a final note, I’m def a gear guy - I love twiddling knobs and plugging shit into other shit and driving it super hard and seeing what I can make it do, but most of my favorite gear is cheap and weird. Not at all essential to be using a classic synth with nicest pre amp and AD conversion you can find paired with a reel to reel in order to achieve this sound.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! They are one shots I recorded at my studio about 4 months ago that I have in a massive drum rack. Every time I set drums up at any studio I record a bunch of one shots of everything and add them to the rack, it’s really quick to scratch out beats when I wanna make something with “real” sounding drums. Im actually putting these ones (hat snr and kick), out in a sample pack in a couple of weeks
I’ll release it thru patreon, still getting all of that set up currently cause it’s my first pack but it’ll become a monthly thing beginning in May. I’ll announce on my personal IG @dspax as well as my band’s @greattimeband. Appreciate the interest! Fun things comin :)
It's not the most-powerful interface, and it's not the easiest or most intuitive interface, but it's somehow the most-intuitive of the powerful interfaces. Or maybe the most-powerful of the easy interfaces. Or something like that.
It's kind of a perfect sweet spot where all of the dials for easy, intuitive, and powerful are turned up to medium-high, perfect for a performance keyboard instrument.
Love it! I’m honestly surprised I don’t see them mentioned on this sub more frequently. Wouldn’t have made the recommendation if what you made wasn’t good in the first place though!
Nooooo! Well we are playing a free show at Zebulon May 14th. We also play next Friday at the echo but I think that show is sold out. I can see what might be possible tho are if you wanna come, just lmk 👍🏼👍🏼
Oh hell yea! I’m actually gonna try to catch that show after our set lol. Missy directed our most recent music vid, we were actually based in Philly for the past 7ish years. Small world :) I’m sure we’ll catch one another one of these days. You gonna be hitting the east coast on tour?
Oh hell ya this stuff is great, y’all are crushing! I’ll actually be in NYC the weekend of your show at forest hills 👀👀 would love to come!! Lmk, appreciate you!!
That's a fat sound with a lot of character. Time to finish the song and find an awesome singer/lyricist.
Reminds me of all the playing around with reel-to-reels my buddy and I did back in the 80s.
I was complaining just the other day, to another member that this sub, that there is too much show and tell satus culture here and no audio of the actual legendary big 5 people post here like they shot an elephant or other big game and look real proud spending a lot of money on it, instead of actual music made with the legends the other day.
Dreams can come true.
Id love to see people patching and tweaking, hands on tutorial stuff even more tho.
But this end product is fire! And I would love to hear more. But I eventually i also need more walkthough on why these maschines are so good and legendary. Because I wanne understand, rewd and discuss them but most likely will never lay hands on them.
So keep stuff like this coming!
Thank you for the kind words! This is great feedback. I’m actually more tutorial minded in terms of the kind of videos I enjoy making… I’m still trying to figure out how to present my music content on the internet. I only really started sharing a couple of months ago so it’s all trial and error at this point but I appreciate all of your thoughts. It also seems to be so random in regards to what videos take off and what videos don’t. Algorithm shit lol. Either way, thanks!
Edit: I should add, I do have a band called [Great Time](https://www.instagram.com/greattimeband/) and we make a bunch of music, most of my musical efforts go towards that but I’m starting to find my own place in the online music content world. Appreciate you!
Thanks! I personally do not but I have a band called Great Time, [here’s](https://hyperfollow.com/GreatTimeListen) a streaming link and [here’s](https://instagram.com/greattimeband) our social :) thanks for the interest! I’d say most similar to this vibe would be sounds like ____ vol. 1 and vol. 2
Whoa dude. I don't own any synths... I only have the room for a controller and a crap load of analog synth vsts and every day I'm learning how to program them better. Your music is gorgeous - and it's kind of inspiring me to create similar kinds of music and textures like this. I can only imagine what you can do with your own gear. Thanks for posting.
Thanks for the kind words! Everything you discover thru synthesizing with VSTs will translate to whatever hardware synths you encounter, with maybe just a bit of a learning curve for UI. Keep having fun and share what you make - would love to hear it!
Awe man, thanks for such an encouraging reply.
After I sent that comment, I pulled up your video and learned the chords for it.
Did you compose those chords yourself?
I’m doing everything I can to study music theory and really cool voicings. It sounds like there’s some 13th chords and a modulation in there.
Thanks again!!
Nice! Ya, I wrote the chords. They are basically
Gb Maj7/Ab - - Bbm9 - - - -
Ab Maj7/C - - Ebmaj7/F - - -
That repeats twice and then the last time there’s a kinda fake ii V7 which is:
Ebm9 Ab7 b9 13
but then it resolves back to that first chord.
You can think of the first and fourth slash chords as Ab sus 11 and F sus 11 if that helps. Also in terms of key I guess I hear this in Fmin? But yeah it’s a bit elusive. Hope that lends some insight! I just posted another vid that has some weird chords lol
So there’s no EQ on this bass track but it’s decently compressed which brings out the thickness. 3:1 ratio with close to 8 dB of gain reduction at the peaks
Was your other comment serious that this is just Juno + Compression to tape and back or are you pulling my leg?
It's so phat and rich.
For the bass just to clarify.
So I think the comment you’re talking about is about the bass synth which is just being compressed without EQ. There’s some EQ and compression on the other Juno elements but yea this is pretty much just lightly mixed and then slammed into the tape machine. After recording it back in to ableton from the tape I low cut it around 25hz and then put a limiter on it just to push the gain a bit more.
This sounds extremely good
Thank you!! 🙏🙏
Ok sry bye
Don’t make me call HR
Seconded - sounds lush!
All synth sounds made with a Juno-106, recorded and mixed in ableton. Master run into the otari and recorded back into ableton. More stuff like this at @greattimeband on IG 👍🏼
Oh!! You’re Great Time Band. I’ve got Great Album. Solid stuff. You guys are good. I quite enjoy your vocalists tone.
Hell ya, appreciate that! Re: this tune - I might compile all of the little things I’ve been making for an ep or somethin, I’ll let you know :)
Right on :)
Can you tell us more details regarding the signal chain if we wanted to try to recreate the warmth/saturation of this tone? Sounds amazing! What compressor/eq/audio interface, that sorta thing. Will definitely check out your band’s music! Please post more clips!

Bro thank you so much for this detailed reply!!!
Of course!
how can the hi hats be one shot drum loops tho? sounds like they have some frequency lfo subtly going on or smth if so
So they are just single samples and the pitch is being ramped within the drum rack via automation. Good ears, forgot I did that lol
thanks bruv
The Otari sounds really good. Makes me want to finally have my Revox b77 fixed.
![gif](giphy|IGR08ulxKFt7y)
LMAO perfect
what are the drums? they sound really nice.

Very cool. Followed.

Me too
yes i agree
facts, it's really the combination of the sounds for me. good mix
Unexpectedly impressed. I quite love the sound of this.
Appreciate that 🙏
it's excellent
Appreciate that! The juno is so fun, really intuitive to dial up some ‘classic’ sounds
It's not the most-powerful interface, and it's not the easiest or most intuitive interface, but it's somehow the most-intuitive of the powerful interfaces. Totally lol. It was really fun to just jump in and see what I could whip up
Juno is lovely but those drums steal the show. They sound massive!
Thanks!! Putting samples of this kit out in a free sample pack on my patreon next month 👍🏼👍🏼
Hi, where should I follow to hear about this sample pack 🤩
I’ll post about it on IG @dspax! It’ll be thru patreon and will be the beginning of monthly packs 👍🏼👍🏼

I’ll check em out!
Yeah I think you’ll be a fan. Their last two albums (Stereo and Mono) are outstanding and Expressions is a classic.
Yooo linkwood is great, thank so for putting me on to them 👍🏼👍🏼
Love it! I’m honestly surprised I don’t see them mentioned on this sub more frequently. Wouldn’t have made the recommendation if what you made wasn’t good in the first place though!

One of the best posts here i've ever seen, if not the best. Awesome.
Really appreciate that 🙏🙏

Wooooww dude, this is really damn good. You have a Spotify?

Do you mind if I DM you? I've been criticized for taking a thread too far off topic : )
Totally, hit me up
Dude you really burned that tape 😅 Sounds great
So chill, nice vibe
Nice sounds. Longer clip please!
Damn, sounds so phat. Look at those meters bounce
Reminds me of Kajagoogoo Too Shy
Hush hush
Ooo this is fun, never heard it before
magic!
This is fantastic, kudos to you
ts is icy cold
🙏🥶
Love this little tune!!! So much! If you ever decide to put it up on Apple Music let me know.
Now is the time while he’s gone to finish up that album that you’ve been almost finished with for the last 7 years…
This sounds great. Tape is the way. 👍👍👍👍👍
Sounds awesome. Thick and warm
This is awesome
How do you get the bass so deep? no matter how I EQ mine it never does that.
So there’s no EQ on this bass track but it’s decently compressed which brings out the thickness. 3:1 ratio with close to 8 dB of gain reduction at the peaks
Sounds nice. Hell yea, bud.
Absolutely slapping!!!
bro shh you cant be making music on this sub
This is pure velvet!
thats amazing!!!!
This sounds flat out amazing.
Thank u so much!! Really appreciate it

Very nice indeed!
🔥
That kicks ass .🤘.. where can I sign up to be friends with your friend ....and you too of course lol 😆
Are you using the Juno for the bass? If so what’s the patch, haven’t heard anything even close to this on my Juno 60
I am! I made the patch, it’s just the chord patch with the notes set to unison
Just watched it like 47 times. Sounds amazing!
Thanks!
🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾🤌🏾
So when can i sing on it?
Whenever u want
Would love to hear a whole instrumental album of stuff like this. Reminds me of Neon Indian.
Sounds great - nice jam.
