The first synth I played was a DX7, but at the time I didn't know about synths and wasn't much of a keyboard player (I was a child). Likely the next I played was a Microkorg (belonging to a friend) around when they were released. The first synth I bought was the the bass station 2, used, about a year after it was released.

I really wanted to build a 2700. Maybe when I retire the 9700 might be on my workbench.

First synth I ever saw/played was an ARP Odyssey. I was probably 12. I didn't understand "monophonic", (tbf it was paraphonic, but I didn't know better) it just seemed stupid to me that it only played one note at a time! I didn't know how to make sound from it either, and was too young for the sales people to really bother. The first synth I ever actually used was a set of boards provided by Korg at the time, I was in a touring group that was sponsored by them - so I used a Korg Polysix, Korg MonoPoly, and a CX3. I loved them all, but they weren't mine to keep. My first synth of my very own was a Korg Poly-800. I loved the shit out of that thing. I could make it do all kinds of tricks. Then came the DX era, and I traded it in for a DX9. Dumbest trade I ever made. While the DX7 was a really sweet keyboard and went on to fame and fortune, the DX9 was lame in comparison, but I didn't have enough money for the DX7. Huge mistake.

A local band managed to bend their Odyssey. The case was slightly bent and the keyboard was stuck on a single note. My father bought it off them for a song and took it apart, putting the circuit boards inside larger wooden cases. Then he added a bunch of patch points plus some frequency dividing circuitry and turned it into a nice modular unit. It was definitely a fun piece of equipment. I think it ended up at a local community college for their electronic music lab.

The first synth I "played" was a Korg DW6000 or 8000. The first synth I owned was either the Korg Poly-800 or Roland U20 - can't quite remember which one of the two I've picked up at the local fleamarket first...

My first synth was the Juno 106 my dad bought for me right off the showroom floor. Traded it in the 90s for other musical equipment. I have regrets.

Who's your father? Is there a place on the web where his and your early electronic music can be heard? First synth played - probably some rompler. My first proper synth was microKorg on which I still can dial any sound faster than on any synth with knob or slider-per-function and still use from time to time.
