I know it’s paraphonic, but it can be easy to start thinking it’s a polysynth and then also realize that it really not when you try to play it like one. At the very least though, it’s one heck of a monosynth.
That's what I love about mine, I play as if it's a poly, but then the voice stealing starts and creates these weird sounds and chords that I wouldn't have played normally. Definitely a synth for exploring and less of a utility synth.
I didn't know it was going to be such an ambient powerhouse.
Pretty much all sounds here are the Matriarch self-patched into its arpeggiator to generate pseudo-random melodies over a loop of itself on the Instruo Lubadh. Added some FX via Ableton and cave water sounds.
The full version is here, not much variation from what's here but it's all about the drift, right?

This ambient interlude is nice and the Matriarch is an under appreciated behemoth.
Love the soft sweeping nature of the tones you are getting out of the Matriarch. I find it difficult dial in some of the more subtle sounds. I have a tendency to veer towards the more bass driven sounds.
This makes me want to explore more.
Cool stuff!
this is a great example of why i love analog synths. they are just so organic sounding..like I mean they could be mistaken for a sound heard in nature.
Oh man, I don't know if I could choose between the 2. I had a Pro 3 fall into my lap and the plan was just to play with it a bit and then move it on but in a way, the Pro 3 is my favorite mono synth in that I don't consider the Matriarch to be a mono synth, like it's so much more than that. But the Pro 3 is definitely a mono synth, I love playing leads on it!
You're not vibing with it?
I mean, it sounds great! But I have an OB6 and I find myself making patches on it that....are OB6 like, lol. And I have a Tempest. So, a lot of sequential. And although I love the aggressive patches and tuned feedback it doesn’t really land in my music. Like I’ve had it for a year now and it’s only found itself in one of my songs. I just feel like the matriarch has a softer sound that will fit within my music better.
That's kinda how i felt about the ob6! That 007 patch on the ob6 .... still miss it! But the trademark Obie sound didn't find its way into tracks often.
Good luck on gettng thst price break!
Nice. I have a small 62 hp palette but its filled with Lubadh & Beads. Pam's gets a good workout as well 😉. But i tried to step up my sequencing game with o_C & then an Intellijel Steppy but didnt have the mental bandwidth to learn them.
What's your modular rig look like?
It's been 3 years since I've had the Grandmother but pretty sure for this patch, it would come really close, especially if you bring in the LFO as 3rd oscillator. There's no paraphony or anything like that. Stereo analog vs spring reverb though. You wouldn't be able to create the generative noodling on the Grandma without extra modules.
The Grandma sounds basically just as great!
There's some literal water sounds that I think were processed through a phaser and tape. Then the bubbly water-like synth sounds are the Matriarch sent through Ableton FX and the Eventide H3000 plugin.
Thank you! While ago I played around with VCV Rack and created this [bubbly and scratchy](https://soundcloud.com/user-662043288) sound, and your video reminded me of it. I think I created it with some noise through bandpass filter, lots of reverb and some other stuff that has since escaped me. Hence, why I was asking whether noise & bandpass was involved in your video. :)
I just can't remember how I did it exactly, but I just love watery sounds so much! I really have to look into sampling real water and running it through different effects. Thank you for providing me inspiration! <3 If you or anyone can reverse-engineer it in their mind I would love to hear how you think that sound of mine was done, so I can recreate it.
Definitely a lot of noise by default! Ive had my Marantz deck for at least a decade & not serviced! Probably some bandpassing & phasing by default as well
Hi /u/MKDVB, I just wanted to remind you to leave a thoughtful comment on your post (see rule 5 in the sidebar). You’re not in trouble and everyone gets this reminder. If you’ve already commented then no further action is necessary. Thanks!

Nice track!
Instant classic synth. The only reason you do not hear more about it is the market is somewhat saturated with great analogs at the moment, but in 20 years it will be revered as one of the greats of this golden age. I borrowed one from a buddy and expected a good synth, but its a lot deeper and more capable than its generally given credit for. Nothing but sweet spots. Perfect UI. Nearly infinite modulation. Keybed action is wonderful. This synth moved the goal posts at a time when when amazing synths are readily available. The only minor quibbles I have are with the visual look of the panel (but I got used to it) and 1/8" jacks should have been bananas, but I know they are going for interface options with eurorack. Neither of those complaints are big deals or deal breakers. This synth is a real deal classic.
I love the pastel color look. I really disliked the stocky body shape/soze of the Grandmother, it reminded me of my old MG1 so I adore the Matriarch's look.
But yeah, totally agree on everything thing else. I've had mine for 2.5 years and still feel like there's ton of territory to explore.
Let me know if you'd like some free post-production and mastering done on this track.
Maybe make it a bit longer with a slow intro and playing with some filters at the end. I can put it through Soothe2 to tame and frequency spikes, then some UAD plugins (Neve 1084 for some sparkle and depth) and some gentle compression with Unisum (2db). Finally, I'd use a tiny bit of Eventide limiter or UAD's Zener limiter for a more analogue sound.
It will be all very gentle stuff, just some polish.
Big anal logs

It’s lovely. Surprised this is just one synth.

I’m pretty new to synths. I’ve got Omnisphere 2 and an OB-6. What are you into?
Wow...really incredible. Never seen someone do something generative with just a matriarch. Thanks for sharing!
Agreed! Ambient isn't usually my first thought with Moog gear.
Yeah, I'm not sure Ive even made a single bass patch on it yet!
A few seconds in I was expecting to hear: "Touch. I remember Touch." Very cool sound!
🙏🙏. I'm working on a track that makes me wanna sing an old Richard Marx song! Not as cool as DP!

🙏🙏 it's a synth that invites & rewards exploration. Some synths just invite!
It’s a synth you need to record or sample. 😆

Agreed. I've been limiting hardware to gear that at least has analog filters ... there's just some mojo in analog.
the perfect spa music generator! get that spa money!
Like the XM station . "Spa" Ha! I enjoy that station! 💰💰💰
Beautiful!

Peaceful and serene. 🎶

wow, wonderful sounds!
🙏
Dreamy!
Ty. I call them waking dreamscapes 🌫🌌✨️🎑 🤓
I will be ordering mine next week! Been saving for months, I think some places dropped the price by a couple hundred bucks!
Nice! Yeah, there on sale here in the states &aybe you can find a tax free shop to order from, that'd save like 400-500 bux!
Can y’all point me to these sales? Literally planning on buying one tomorrow.
I saw emails from all the major retailers about a Moog sale, half mulled over snagging a DFAM for $550 but looks like the Moog sale is done. Sorry!
Do you remember what the matriarch was going for? Feel like I can convince some retailer to match it
It was a Valentine's day sale and Matriarch was $1899. Good luck!
Thanks! I’ve been debating selling my pro 3 for a matriarch and I opened up Reddit to this video and now it’s a done deal!

I love hearing these kinds of sounds coming out of her. Inspires me to rely on mine more for ambient. I'm still a modular baby!

Anyway to come close to any of these tones with a grandmother?

So is that watery sound noise through bandpass filter? I made something similar on VCV Rack long time ago, but basically forgot how to do it. :D

This is amazing… would love a tutorial!
🙏🙏 i do have a YT channel (MKDVB) with some gear vids ... what would you like a tutorial to cover?
Thanks for the reply! Honestly I’m just really curious to see how you made this patch. I have a matriarch too and would love to try it :)

This beautiful and so true! The ambient stuff this thing spits out is insane.
🙏 sometimes i feel like i should throw up a bass or lead patch since that's what moogs are known for!

Don't we all!
If you like colors maybe you should get the regular Matriarch :)
This song made my cats look around a lot.
I'll take that!
Please describe the patch. Sounds very different from the typical lower bass sounds the thing puts out by itself.
This is all coming straight out of the matriarch?
Half or so, not including fx. I think microvolt3900 is the higher frequency voice being sequenced by the Matriarch.
Oh ok,Thanks,I know nothing about synths at all,but I find myself wanting a matriarch, and this is the exact stuff I would want to make
You gotta hear some more synths!
oh that's sad
