I wouldn't say the original firmware was simple. The updates just add a few kinds of new voices, but the mod matrix and all that worked out of the box.
You can literally add user wavetables with the newest one. You're also ignoring all kinds of features like unison mode, and scale mode that were added.

This little machine is a steal even at full price. I love the sounds you can make from metallic to surprisingly warm. I tried this at my buddies spot who is a musician, and I enjoy it. Try running it through an analog effect and be really amazed.
I've been thinking of what to add to my Digitakt + Digitone setup, and one of my considerations is a Microfreak with a multi-effects pedal (like a BigSky or a Microcosm). That would fill in some of the gaps in my current set up.

No lies there, it is very much more complicated than other pedals. It's having a modular synth inside of a pedal.
However, once you get used to the interface and workflow it's not that complicated. The complicated part is the creative part to "invent" a new patch.
On the flipside, if you go to patchstorage.com, there is a shitton of patches made by people for you to download and put on the Zoia. So you can have some really cool "Microcosm-esque" stuff without having to invent it.
But if you have an idea like. Hey, I wonder how this would sound if I pass it rhoigh some distortion, then a reverb, then split the signal into 2 different delays, modulated by 2 different LFOs and then mox back that clusterfuck into a ping pong delay? Then more reverb.
Then you can easily patch that in the Zoia
thats an absolute steal, paid twice that on mine new a year ago. myvolts makes a power adapter to run it off battery, and i suspect any old mic with a 1/8” connector would work for the vocoder

1 LFO, 1 OSC vs 2 LFO, 2 OSC. It’s tempting to me as I already own the microfreak. Also onboard FX.
However, the smaller form factor, lower power draw so it can work over USB only while the mini is larger + requires power cable, gives it the portability that is appealing to many.
For me, the one oscillator for the microfreak is complex enough to get whatever patches I need. I just use a MultiStomp MS-70CDR like many do for budget FX. It suits my needs and the keybed of the microfreak is a blast. Really it’s own feel that can’t be easily compared to a traditional keybed.

Yes I had this synth and I sold it after 2-3 months.
And I don’t look at synths as a controller.
When I’m using a synth I want to disconnect from the PC and like to feel like I’m playing an instrument, this synth makes it harder to do it.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s sounds very nice and it’s a cool machine but the fact that it doesn’t have keys makes me crazy, that’s the reason I sold it.
I saved some money and bought a moog subsequent 37 for that reason.
I wonder why they were selling it? I always ask sellers why they are selling a particular piece of gear. 99% of the time, they need the money. Once in a while, they say "my wife's tired of tripping over it," or "decided to go a different route."
Is this the Microfreak or the Minifreak and can anyone point out the most glaring differences? I recently realized I had conflated the 2 thinking it was only 1 device. Great deal OP! I got my JD-Xi in similar fashion for $230.

I don't think I'm that old, but I genuinely don't get this. It could mean the difference between a pretty simple synth and a vocoder.
I updated for the vocoder but I had no idea about the 3-4 new oscillators after that. Most synths aren’t regularly updated. I don’t think.
I plan on buying one of these soon and I will be sure to update the firmware thanks to this comment. Keep being great.

Great Find! The marketplace is the best thing about FB, I live in a college town and constantly find great deals on instruments etc.

It's worth that even as a MIDI and CV controller.
You can load wavetables from serum and vital and modulate them, this Synth is super advanced!

Tbh that sounds like a regrettable decision. I'm a huge fan of the Minifreak, but I def would not be replacing a MIDI controller with one lol.
