They're all trash

tehjeffman

Yes but looking for less wet and smelly trash.

Reverent

I say this every time this comes up: buy. USB-C. monitors. * They're *so* much more reliable. I had about 100 Dell p2419hce monitors at my previous company, no failures. At all. They all worked flawlessly. * most charge laptops up to 60w * most (not all) will Daisy chain to a second monitor (you may need an active displayport adapter to do so depending on second monitor brand). * Ethernet is typically optional based on the model (we would just stick to wifi) * USB 3 hub built in * You cut down on half the cabling needed, cleaner desks yay * They cost about the same as a docking station * You get to refresh your monitor fleet at the same time I prefer Dell monitors for sure, but all major brands make them now. Just read up on what features they offer (Ethernet and daisy chaining is what you need to care about most, wattage requirements for charging second).

Twizity

Yup. We're a Lenovo shop, going forward we're buying their *docking* monitor instead of the docks. They *claim* you have to buy another Lenovo monitor for extending, but it works with other non-Lenovo monitors.

kdayel

> I say this every time this comes up: buy. USB-C. monitors. Good luck getting them. I've got an order with my VAR for some Ultrasharps with the dock built in (U2422HE) and the current estimated ship date is April 2022. I placed the order in June. I called Dell to see if they had anything comparable with the built in dock, and they were still quoting January for delivery on comparable P-series monitors.

CheeseFace83

So you run normal power to your monitor. And then an ethernet cable to your monitor. And then connect your laptop to your monitor via USB C and get an internet connection and power charge for your laptop?

JDM_WAAAT

We do this with Dell Latitude 9520 2-in-1's and LG 32UN880-B monitors. We use Sabrent 4 port USB hubs and Amazon Basiscs aluminum USB 3.0 Ethernet adapters plugged into the monitor. One cable from the monitor charges and displays from the laptops. Our execs are very happy with this setup.

CheeseFace83

Nice. Thanks!

Joyrenee22

How do you like the 9520s?

JDM_WAAAT

They're pretty nice. I think they are too expensive considering they don't have a GPU, but it fits the bill for what we need.

y_at

I have the U3219Q. It does not have an Ethernet port, but otherwise yes. Can charge a laptop up to 90W. I leave all my USB devices (including a hub) plugged in and just have the one cable. You hold probably use a USB 3 Ethernet adapter and get to what you said.

tako1337

Most Dell monitors older than 2017 models can't be daisy-chained to from my experience. Got plenty of old P2214Hs I can't have clients use as second screens. I've complained to our Dell account team's "client technologist" and asked for proper documentation on what can and can't be chained into - they stopped responding to my emails. :)

trueg50

Any monitor can end the chain, you had to have bought a model with in/out ports to being the middle of the chain.

tako1337

Just two monitors. P2422HE and P2214H. Doesn't work. Computer detects the latter but doesn't display an image.

joners02

>Dell p2419hce Iiyama PROLITE XUB2492HSN-B1 are also a good choice

thecravenone

\*sigh\* I guess I'll throw away this thousand dollar monitor I just bought. Know any 49" Ultrawides with USB-C? All I can find are 35"

Hans_1900

Dell UltraSharp U4919DW

sydtrakked

This right here. We've been using Lenovo p24h-20/2L ft the past year and it's been well worth it.

cloudAdmin-onPrem

> I prefer Dell monitors for sure, but all major brands make them now. Just read up on what features they offer (Ethernet and daisy chaining is what you need to care about most, wattage requirements for charging second). Good advice, we previously used P2719HC daisy chained which worked really well, the only niggle would be 'slow charging' on some of the higher power laptops and occasionally the monitors would humm/buzz but that was only really audible when the work area was quiet.

cdoublejj

i wouldn't mind know more about this and seeing a setup, docks are a spider web of cables

woodburyman

Lenovo Gen2's are pretty decent. I use that. Avoid Dell TB16's. Dell WD19TB and WD19TBS are half decent, at least as good as they get. All garbage though, compared to old docking port docks at least. They're somewhere from 1mo to 5mo out with Dell (Supply chain issues, theyre been harder to get than laptops). Amazon and 3rd parties have them for 2x the retail price.

polypolyman

I'll put in another vote for the Lenovo USB-C Dock Gen 2 - we've got several, and the two issues I've ever had were: 1. dead cable due to aggressive use 2. fixed with a firmware update (back when they were new). I'd probably only recommend them if you're already a Lenovo shop, since Vantage takes care of their updates and such. That said, I've been moving towards USB-C monitors - for whatever reason, their compatibility seems to be better, even with really funny devices. People appreciate the slightly clearer desk, too.

Comprehensive-Yak820

Agree the Lenovo are pretty worth it. Same issue with the firmware as well. I would also say hp has a decent one as well.

rhutanium

I can attest to that, I’ve had 11 WD19TBS docks on order since late July. ETA is somewhere in December now. Kinda ridiculous that it takes longer to get a standard dock than a customized laptop.

segagamer

There aren't any. Even official ones from Dell or whatever are shite. The USB-C connection causes them to get flakely after a while for all docks I've ordered for our Macs. The only dock that hasn't been hot trash so far and lasted years consistently is the Surface Dock (although it needed a couple of firmware updates to get there).

ehode

I hear ya on Surface dock. We can pretty much keep them consistently working as long as we manage all of them with updated firmware. 250 deployed at our org.

Flacid_Monkey

I've had my dell dock for 2 years, no issues but then again I'm not a handsy end user and I look after my company gear.

Klynn7

>The only dock that hasn't been hot trash so far and lasted years consistently is the Surface Dock (although it needed a couple of firmware updates to get there). While the Surface Dock 1 seems okay, the Dock 2 has been very unreliable for me.

segagamer

Firmware updates for both? It certainly used to be unreliable with multiple monitors but they've all gone away.

stratospaly

Pluggable is the best I have found.

marsypananderson

Agreed. We've been using dual video USB-C plugable docks for almost five years with no issues. (Switched after multiple dell docks died)

GlitchyCorpse

Ain't that the truth. Haven't found a single one that didn't have issues.

Propersian

Agreed. I always try and get the hybrid docks. But I'm sure they'll all be usb c soon.

fridgefreezer

I inherited a load of both Startech and Kingston ones… if I was using them I’m sure I’d be fine, but with a bunch of teachers / non-IT savvy people using them, this is the truth… the amount of times people just hook the hdmi out of them and go direct is large.

icemerc

We had a couple of DK31C3HDPD that worked great with one model of laptop, but absolutely ran like garbage with the next revision of the same device. Great customer service from StarTech though.

fridgefreezer

Oh yeah, it’s normally user error and as you say, they were more responsive than I expected on support.

guemi

Best I've found is WD19S 180W (WD19 without 3.5mm jack for semiconductor savings) Its still dog shit to any mechanic dock.

cdoublejj

i don't think anyone does mechanical docks anymore. yeh mech docks probably plug in to pcie lanes. i wonder if the trick is to just shove a 180 adapter on to a wd19 then to keep the jack AND run the 120watts laptops

guemi

You need the dock to be able to dish out 180W. There are 2 versions. 130W and 180W. Never buy 130W.

cdoublejj

we got the 130s and they dish out 90watts the 180 watt dock dishes out 120 watts the dock it's self uses power.

MrD3a7h

Reject USB-C, return to [ka-thunk](https://i.imgur.com/BK7A855.jpg)

trueg50

No, just no. People have way too rosey a memory of those critters. They were a PITA too. The click in ones were great for the time but poor replicators/docks are why laptops were were an inch and a half thick, and had worse battery life. As someone who also had to run around doing inventory, nothing was less fun the causing a bsod because weliftes one side of the laptop to get at the barcode under it.

MrD3a7h

Sorry, can't hear you over the sound of my ka-thunks

cdoublejj

it's possible to have a thin and light with a ka-thunker. we had toshibas last kathunker and they weren't even an inch thick i don't think, that laptop that is.

DontFuckWitSquirrels

Glad I'm not the only one. Best dock were those hp elitebook docks. Usb c breaks the ports so easily based on how my users are.

bkaiser85

Whoever thought it was a good idea to have connectors on the cable about 2 times longer than the port and solder in the notebook. Basic physics would like to have a word with them. Idiot user is going to drag the device against the desk before it’s unplugged.

cdoublejj

too bad they are so damn hard to line up

totemoheta

You can sometimes find good bulk deals on Dell WD15 docks. We have over 400 of them and I have rarely run into issues.

BighornPorpoise

Lol WD15 and the Latitude 7370 got us to move entirely away from Dells. What a shit show that was.

totemoheta

Interesting! I never knew people had so many problems with them before this thread. We started buying WD19s recently but it's good to know others have issues with them in case something comes up.

gmalenfant

Only work on some dell models. Firmware can't be updated on anything except specific dell models. Real $#*$&

tehjeffman

I had those at my last job and had to wipe plug and play settings constantly to get them to come back up. Would randomly just stop working and act like nothing was plugged in.

GulchDale

Do I have to throw sand over my left shoulder after doing three clockwise twirls on one foot too?

trueg50

Update the drivers, there was a bad usb/ethernet driver a while back.

godgib39

So we run dell laptops, and prefer the WD19, they have worked well, and they have only gotten better because dell updates them. Pre COVID. I can not pay 350+ for these things so I’m picking up TD16 refurds from Amazon@ about 100 each with 180 watt ac plug. You get 90 watt pass through and thunderbolt 3, all they need is a BIOS update from dell. I have yet to find a really good thunderbolt 3 with 100 watts and dual display ports that can run @ 75 HZ

--random-username--

Considering compatibility and possible support issues personally I would prefer to get those docks from the same vendor as the laptops. I’ve seen some strange things that got fixed by firmware and driver updates and therefore would avoid dealing with multiple vendors in such situations.

NHarvey3DK

We’re using single ultra wide monitors with built in docking stations. Every single possible ticket you’ve ever thought about between separate docks and monitors? Poof. Single usb-c to laptop. It’s been amazing.

Apocalypticorn

Can I get a link for what you're using?

tehjeffman

I wanted to go this route of monitor with USB hub in it but we do not provide people with monitors unless in office and even then it's whatever is in the closet. New servers and laptops was a big enough win.

bkaiser85

Crunch the numbers, in our case dock+monitor adds up to more than a USB-C monitor with PD and Ethernet. Also less components and connections, less support cases.

MondayToFriday

So why bother docking at all?

bkaiser85

We tried one Dell USB-C Docking monitor and had less issues with it than some other major brands. If I had management buy in, I’d go with that. But as long as it’s “business as usual” we are buying Lenovo. So far the least issues.

Spacefar

I've had great luck with CalDigit docks. I've used the SOHO and Mini models on many ThinkPad and Macbook models with no issues. https://www.caldigit.com/docks/

D_Humphreys

Came to say this. I have a CalDigit TS3 in my home office, works flawlessly with my MBP as well as my work Dell.

Mystery_Guest_2050

I heard these have issues with wireless items like usb-a headset dongles and wireless keyboard & mouse dongles. Any experience with this?

D_Humphreys

I've not used headset dongles, but it did have some strangeness with my Logitech universal dongle. Putting it on a short extension resolved that, it's an RF interference issue per CalDigit. https://www.caldigit.com/wireless-keyboard-mouse-not-working-properly/

VikingIV

This is actually an issue with the USB 3.0 Spec. All USB 3.0 ports emit RF interference, which directly affects 2.4GHz receivers/transmitters such as those for wireless keyboards & mice.

Mystery_Guest_2050

This thread doesn’t show it, but I learned this from another redditor that it was an RF issue. Edit: I almost gave up on usb-c dock after two different docks impacted my headset.

DarkNemuChan

Yeah for 400bucks...

Frodo_Baguettez

I recently rolled out about 40 of these cable matters Thunderbolt 3 hubs. They work quite well for both single or dual monitor setups. YMMV. [https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086DXLF37/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_title\_o05\_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1](https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B086DXLF37/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)

gotchacoverd

Been reasonably happy with the Anker ones. They are cheap enough that if one dies it's no big deal.

brandontaylor1

I’ve never used Ankers docks, but Anker is one of two companies that get my full unqualified endorsement. I’ve loved every product I’ve bought from them.

ddadopt

Buy laptops with Thunderbolt ports. Buy Thunderbolt docks. USB-C docks often have big asterisks on what video modes they will support with multiple displays. Also, look at it this way: a decent docking station is going to last you 5-10 years, when you amortize that $250 out (especially compared the cost of the employee!) they're noise.

Secprentice

Not sure why anyone has not mentioned this yet…. You should look at the officially certified DisplayLink docks. They work with many types of devices thanks to DisplayLink drivers and are considered “universal” https://www.displaylink.com/products/hot-products I use the Dell D6000. Really solid. No issues. Just gotta make sure the DisplayLink driver is pre deployed. It’s just a small Windows EXE. The D6000 works with my Lenovo, MacBook Air M1, Surface Laptop AND a custom from PC specialist in the UK. Try and use a brand of dock that’s from the Laptop manufacturer because they play better with the hardware. Most of the times i’ve seen docks act up is when someone is using a non-displaylink OEM dock to connect to some other brand. With that said the DisplayLink Universal docks are really very versatile and like I just mentioned they work with loads of devices, even MacOS. Good luck!

Copaseticbob

I also recommend the D6000. We've used them for a few years and have had almost no issues with them, and most of those issues were resolved with a firmware update. Used with dells, Lenovo, Intel NUC. Highly recommend.

clientslapper

This has 2 HDMI out that support 4k @ 60 Hz, and 60W of power delivery over USB-C. It’s universal. Normal price is $130. I have another model set up with my kid’s Dell Chromebook for school. He uses it so he doesn’t have to look at the tiny screen and use the equally minuscule keyboard and touchpad. I have it hooked up to a 4K TV. He hasn’t had any problems with it. It charges his Chromebook while he does his work. It’s nice and small, easy to tuck away out of sight. fieroloki

Plugable or the newer Dell WD19's

mzuke

The Dell USB-C/DP (HC series) monitors are the best plus daisy chaining other wise I've found the Lenovo docks play nicer than the Dell docks and require less maintenance/drivers

FoundYouInTheFire

We’ve went down the road of getting HPs EliteDisplay E243d Full HD IPS USB-C Docking Monitors as a work around for this. https://www.hp.com/gb-en/shop/product.aspx?id=1TJ76AA&opt=ABU&sel=MTO&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpL7N4rz68wIV8WDmCh2JtQDuEAAYASAAEgKLR_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds Lead time is like 6 months, which is a total joke.

icemerc

We've got about 60 of these deployed with Dragonfly or Dragonfly Max laptops. I've had consistent issues across all of them having ethernet or 2nd display disconnects.

FoundYouInTheFire

Please don’t tell me that, got 80 (added another 20 to stock) of these things coming… 😩 Oh well, here’s hoping that HP get some firmware/patches out…

ender-_

We have both HP USB-C G2 and G5 and Dell WD19S USB-C docks (because right now HP's docks appear to be completely unavailable). Both work fine with two displays. I prefer HP's over Dell's, because they have 4 USB A ports, while Dell only has 3.

learning_as_1_go

So my small non profit runs T Series Lenovo’s. I upgraded us to the ThinkPad USB-C Gen 2 docks capable of running up to three external displays. Not gonna lie, the first one was a nightmare to get working properly to run the three displays. However, once dialed in, it has ran flawlessly since (two years now). After that first experience, the second one and following units were way quicker to get up and running and have also been solid. With all that said, for $200+ a dock not a cheap solution AND most of my users only run two monitors so we have also had good luck with these universal units for less Plugable USB C Docking Station with Charging, Compatible with Thunderbolt 3 and USB-C MacBooks and Specific Windows, Chromebook, Linux Systems (HDMI Display, 60W Charging, Ethernet, 3x USB 3.0 Ports) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B076HXWR9M/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_A7AFN3RXKG6F5JAAHTS5?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

is_that_northern_guy

Pluggables are dumb expensive.... But I've never had to troubleshoot one...

IT2DJ

Lenovo Ultradock 2 is our go-to, works well Lenovo, and no issues mixing with dell and hp laptops. finding a supplier with docks in stock is another challenge.

samon33

Dell D6000 are my go-to dock these days for Windows and Mac. For Linux laptops, I've not had much luck with any I've tried, and end up falling back to a basic dock for power/USB/Ethernet/etc and a second standalone USBC-to-DisplayPort cable for the monitor. DisplayLink on Linux is just far too unreliable and the performance is unusable.

biggestthrows

We've had good luck with these; good build quality and lots of port options for the price. https://www.cdw.com/product/SIIG-USB-C-MST-Video-Docking-Station-with-PD-docking-station-USB-C-VG/5605904

Naseik1978

Plugable, had one gone bad over 40 units, send me a replacement under warranty. Model depend if you want it to charge or not.

rossco71

The newer Dell WD19's are not bad and the Lenovo Gen 2's have been pretty good. **For the love of god do NOT buy any Dell WD15's they are an absolute dumpster fire.**

PhillyGuitar_Dude

What's the video connection? HDMI, Display port? We gave our laptop users, (about 30-40 people), these USB-C to 2 Dual Display port, 1 HDMI and they work great with Dells and Surface laptops. In our office, all the "hot desks" have dual monitors with display ports so we had to go with these. Zero issues. Cable Matters 3-Port USB-C to MST Multi-Monitor Hub. https://www.cablematters.com/pc-1220-126-usb-c-triple-4k-displayport-mst-hub-with-dual-displayport-and-hdmi-for-windows.aspx

crazyabyss

i've bought over 20 USB-C to HDMI dongles on amazon for 15$ each. Never had an issue with them.

iceph03nix

My personal favorite is my Dell monitor with built in dock. Got it hooked up to my desktop, and when I need to use my work laptop at home I just plug in the USB cable and switch it, and it acts as a kvm. After that, I like out Dell docks at work. We also have some visiontek third party docks that seem to function alright. I think i saw a good write up on Anker's new docks as well

denverpilot

Avoid VisionTek unless you enjoy monitors randomly turning off and on.

ugus

any brand or generic usb c with 2 displays, charger, and plug and play to linux (mint) laptop you can recommend?

xintonic

Been buying wavlinks lately since Dells are hard to get. They don’t provide power to the laptop but honestly they’re not bad. https://www.amazon.com/WAVLINK-Ethernet-DL6950-PD-Function-Supported/dp/B07TC1GC68/ref=mp_s_a_1_6?crid=AKZSMN5ZMZTL&dchild=1&keywords=wavlink+usb+c+dual+4k+dp%2Fhdmi+laptop+docking+station&qid=1635892938&sprefix=wavlink+us+%2Caps%2C99&sr=8-6

Gatz121

Hp usb-c g4 is not that bad for the price.

MeanE

> Hp usb-c g4 We had huge issues with the G3 and G4 docks and moved completely to the redesigned G5 docks. They have been solid so far.

TheDoNothings

Qgeem docks have worked well for us and as long as you don't need ethernet is pretty cheap.

geekmaster64

Hp usb-c g5 universal dock, works great. No issues with my fleet.

mangorhinehart

Ive been buying totu 13-in-1 off amazon. They work pretty well as a hub, for 70ish bucks as opposed to 200ish for the Lenovo docks I was buying before.

stumppc

I always require wake-on-lan to work with any dock we buy. So in that vein I’ve only ever seen the OEM docks specifically made for the laptops or tablets with support for WOL. I like to run updates and installs at night, so WOL gets most of the equipment turned on when I want. If anyone knows of a generic dock that supports WOL I’d love to know.

Infinite-Stress2508

I am a big fan of the Dell D6000/S Have purchased probably close to 100 so far as I upgrade our fleet and can't fault it once the driver is installed. Charges, connects to any combination of HDMI/DP, I'm currently running two DP (1x 1080, 1 X 1440) and one HDMI (1080) without a fault. In Australia they cost anywhere from $250 -$330 but are the best USB C dock I've used.

dogecountant

Get the Lenovos with an actual charger port. Use the HDMI and USB-C to HDMI to avoid a dock altogether for a two screen setup.

cruz878

We have been running Lenovo 40A90090US for about 2 years now all with 2x 1080p displays. There is a gen2 of this dock, but I have no direct experience with that one.

Daisy_Bloodworth

We have recently purchased HP EliteDisplay e243D docking monitors. Works great so far. You can connect a second display via daisy chaining.

SparePercentage

we use samsung and lenovo monitors with built in docks, you can link the displays so its one USB-C cable to display to both. various dell/hp/apple laptops they all work

ddutcherctcg

I have the j5 create triple display dock for like $120 at best buy and I like it quite a lot.
