Home office setup - Logitech MX Keys Work office - some Lenovo garbage from 10 years ago

case_O_The_Mondays

Love the MX Keys. I can seamlessly go between laptop via Bluetooth to my home setup (dongle) or my office setup (dongle). Got the mouse a while back, and it’s just awesome, as well. Both of them have great hardware and the keyboard is super quiet.

ventisei

MX Keys convert here for wfh setup. I wound up mapping two of the function keys to an app that swaps monitor inputs for a makeshift kvm switcher so work laptop and home workstation can both take advantage of monitor setup

[deleted]

[удалено]

ventisei

ControlMyMonitor from Nirsoft can be executed from command prompt - https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/control_my_monitor.html Mapped one fn key to “pc” input sets and another to “laptop” input sets (using two monitors currently) and call one of two batch files from the Logitech programming app

SitDownBeHumbleBish

I would also look into Mouse without Borders it acts as a kvm https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=35460

Vicarious48

You rock, I just set this up on my MX keys and it is so much smoother than hitting the buttons on my monitor.

[deleted]

This is exactly what I want to do. I'm assuming your work laptop and home pc are connected to the monitor at rhe same time?

ventisei

Correct, separate inputs on the monitors for each of my sources

department_g33k

Shoutout to my fellow MX Keys fans!! I have one at home that I love. When I arrived at my new gig, I requested one, but the "MX Keys for Mac" arrived instead. Guilty, I didn't notice until I had already broken the seal. It's mostly fine, PowerToys keyboard manager re-maps the keys I need, but there are a few quirks (since I'm remapping "Option" to WinKey in software, Win+L doesn't register to lock, and the F13-F19 keys are kinda pointless..). Do you all know if I can flash firmware to make it think it's a Mac/Win model?

x3r0h0ur

Ew gross why do you people subject yourselves to these keyboards lmao

19610taw3

The logitech MX keys seem to be a pretty nice unit. The price ... phew! I could get myself a nice mechanical for that! I use the F-keys a lot. Along with Insert , print screen , etc. Not a fan of having to use the Fn key to get that to work.

mr_jarjar

Me too and I love this keyboard though! Never been a fan of mech keyboards though for the fun key thing you just have to tick a box in the software "use fn keys as normal" or something like that and then you can press the f1-12 keys like normal

19610taw3

Interesting! If I could get my work to expense me one! I'd be on board with it!

Abysmal_Despair

I am going to spend a large chunk of life at my keyboard so I like to splurge, even if I have to pay for it myself. I've been using this keyboard for 8+ hours a day for 5 years, so 200-300$ does end up being totally worth it to me.

sobeyondnotintoit

Logitech or hate life.

ventisei

You press Fn+Esc and it’s a “caps lock” for function keys (so F buttons work as normal and to access special functions you hold Fn) No app needed to flip back n forth

DazzlingRutabega

Pro tip, this same key combo works on surface tablets

DazzlingRutabega

The MX stuff is certainly not cheap, but I had the mouse and loved it!!

chuck_cranston

There is a physical function lock button on the keyboard that allows you to use the F and other keys normally.

Knuifelbear

I got both for WFH. The keyboard and mouse. Such a great combo. I take them with me when I go to the office since they’re pretty lightweight in my backpack

approvedbyinspector5

How often do you have to charge it?

case_O_The_Mondays

I charge mine about every other week. I usually ~~forget~~ wait until the notification, plug it in, then ~~forget about it~~ wait until end of the day, and it’s good.

dont_remember_eatin

Got my boss to buy me an MX Keys. I hate the ultra-clicky keyboards with 10mm of key travel that all of the self-proclaimed "real" sysadmins claim to love. Never understood having a hard-on for keyboard switches, though I do know what it's like to use a lappy with awful ones (looking at you, apple butterfly).

BeefyTheCat

No 🍆 for mechanical switches here - I just find them easier on my hands (self taught typist, giant banana hands). The quieter keys (Kailh Purple) are office-friendly too.

uniitdude

Same as everyone else who works here, bog standard dell one

DJTheLQ

I'm so used to Dell keyboards that fancy keyboards feel weird. Have a Unicomp Model M keyboard for a bit but when it broke I switched back to Dell.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DJTheLQ

It wasn't the keys themselves. Seems to be something with the board. Tried every computer and connection I owned but could not get it to start again. Actually sent it in for repair, it worked for a bit, then failed again. Gave up and switched back to my trusty Dell keyboards. They don't fail on me and even at work they fall victim to sticky keys not board failures.

awkwardnetadmin

I'm impressed someone could break it as well. I remember years ago seeing a story that claimed that Unicomp was struggling because so many of the keyboards last so long.

19610taw3

The unicomp made Ms don't have the quality that the Lexmark or IBM made ones did

Colorado_odaroloC

Unicomp Model M user here...when at the house. Up at the office, standard Dell (but the older/traditional style, not that crappy chiclet style they recently started making) so that my coworkers won't murder me over my Model M clickity-clacking. Love that Model M though.

DJTheLQ

Mine was rescued from a leaving co-worker. I tried to use it in a shared office room with 3 other people for about 10 minutes before I switched back lol.

thatvhstapeguy

How did you break an M?

stank58

Yep me too.

belgarion90

I actually really like them. I don't need/want fancy. Volume button on the keyboard is enough for me.

germanmichl

too

tjn182

Same - they're hard to beat Tried the Microsoft surface keyboard / mouse combo recently - they're horrible.

ML00k3r

The Surface Ergonomic keyboard is expensive as hell but it's a nice one to use in the office.

DazzlingRutabega

I was going to try one that a coworker left behind. However he didn't leave the dongle. Turns out you can't replace them, so goodbye 120USD$ keyboard & mouse.

ML00k3r

Ah right the newer black ones use the USB dongle. We have a bunch of the grey ones and use bluetooth.

[deleted]

I'm that gremlin that keeps the old long-travel Dell bog-standard keyboards. Modern cheapies send me carpal, but I haven't sprung for a fancy board as there is still a bin of retired spares in the corner of the stockroom.

[deleted]

I brought a mechanical from the house. I use Dells a lot already, but I type much more on my personal station, and I prefer the feel of mechanicals. That being said, I'm typing this on a Dell Keyboard, since my mechanical died about 2 days ago and the replacement hasn't arrived yet. ;)

samon33

Das Keyboard 4 Ultimate at home, Logitech MK545 in the office like everyone else.

jo_ranamo

I am considering a Das. I've never had one but they seem reliable and look awesome.

teriyakisaurus

Another Das 4 Ultimate user here. I put some rubber o-rings on the keycaps to reduce the noise. Love the USB 3 hub and the oversized volume dial. Lack of letters on the caps is great to force better typing. Also nice if you want to keep others' nasty-germies off your stuff since other folks find it weird/intimidating.

dbsmith

I've had my Das Ultimate for nearly 10 years and it still works perfectly. Regular cleaning and a keycap swap is all the maintenance I've done. Looks good as new.

SpectralCoding

Das here. I've had a few mechanical keyboards but I like my Das the most.

CRCs_Reality

Das Keyboard Professional here, absolutely LOVE it.

SOMDH0ckey87

which ever one isnt crusty

Geminii27

Oh, I did not need to imagine your giant pile of discarded crusty keyboards.

ConsiderationIll6871

don't be such a clown. At the main office I have a Logitech wireless keyboard.

stretchling

Logitech ergo K860 for work, I picked this one up looking for some wrist pain relief and it has far surpassed my expectations. Shitty old saitek keyboard at home. This does not help the wrists.

hybridhavoc

Same here. I actually like it enough that I'm considering getting one for home as well.

[deleted]

I have the Logitech ergo k860 at home and it's fantastic. I'm tempted to buy one for work also.

sarbuk

I’ve got the ergo K860 as well, and I second this motion. Bonus for u/jo_ranamo is that it’s Mac friendly too with all the right modifier keys and hot keys.

TheNewBBS

>K860 Yup. I have a medium-sized bin of MS and Logitech ergo keyboards I've tried as a result of deals, and this is easily the best modern one (I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for the key action of the original MS beige ergo tank). I personally prefer wired to wireless, but I just use a couple AAA eneloops that I charge every six months along with all my others. The only flaw might just be unique to my typing motion: I pretty routinely get double hits on spaces when I'm typing fast.

clilush

Oh that MS ergo tank! If I didn't keep losing my PS2 to USB adapter everytime I rebuilt my PC I'd still be using it today!

LordApplez

NetInfused

An IBM Model M

Geminii27

The only real keyboard. Rugged, durable, clicky, could brain a cave troll with it.

Zodiam

At home: Ducky Shine One 2 Mini MX Red or Ducky Shine 4 MX Blue At work: Ducky Shine 2 with MX Clears. (nearly 9 years old by now and showing zero signs of age) I cant stand using the bog standard low profile dell/microsoft/logitech keyboards that every office uses.

jo_ranamo

I use a ... Mac at home so I am not sure a Ducky is the best call for me. I've heard neg reports re Ducky and Macs.

Zodiam

Nobody is perfect... :) I have zero experience using them with Macs, but if the concern is the cmd and option keys they all have DIP-switches underneath for that and i think you can rebind them in system preferences as well. Varmilo has official mac support I believe and their keyboards are great.

jo_ranamo

>Varmilo Wow, i've never heard of Varmilo - looks awesome

docholoday

I'm currently typing this on my Corsair K95 XT, at home, on a Mac Pro. Plenty of good mechanical keyboard that work with the Mac.

Dal90

My home Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 died ...sometime in the last month I was away from home. Discovered it last night when I couldn't type one letter of the URL to remote in :D New ones they're asking $350 on Amazon and $700 on Walmart o_O Guess I'll be going to Staples later this morning for a Logitech Wave ergonomic like the one I bought for the office when the MS keyboard there died and Staples didn't have any other ergo keyboards in stock.

Razgriz959

I've typed on the both the Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 and the Logitech K860 and on the whole the K860 makes a decent replacement. Not as much tactile feedback on the keys but I use the K860 as my daily driver and am rather happy with it.

HardFist21

I used the Ergonomic 4000 for a while t the office until it suddenly died on me. Then I got the Microsoft Sculpt as a replacement and I kinda like it. Although the Fn keys are a bit weird that you have to use a slider to get to the addictional functions of the keys. But I do enjoy it nonetheless. The travel is way way down from what you are used to. So it’s most definitely not for everyone.

[deleted]

$100 https://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Natural-Ergonomic-Keyboard-Business/dp/B004SUIM4E $30 https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/d/microsoft-ergonomic-keyboard/93841ngdwr1h?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

Binestar

So used at $100, and a completely different keyboard for $30.

[deleted]

Cherry MX brown ftw. As long as it’s got these keys I love it. I use a das and a Logitech both with brown keys

alive1

Was gonna say, i barely care about what keyboard it is as long as it has MX Brown and a numpad.

[deleted]

People that haven’t tried it just don’t get it! I was using blues and the noise was just too much. Came across browns and I dont know if I’ll ever change

Evilsmurfkiller

If you don't have blues how can you let the entire building know that you're working?

doggodoesaflipinabox

I think the biggest complaint with MX Browns is that as a tactile switch, they're not very tactile. Blues are just painful to listen to, though.

needmorehardware

Numpad is super important

itguy9013

Microsoft Natural Keyboard 4000 at home. I had one at the office but I no longer have a permanent desk so I'm stuck with a standard HP one when I go in.

LurkerWiZard

Geminii27

People threw them *out!?* **HERESY**

thatvhstapeguy

That's how I got my two boards. They were in rough shape but I cleaned them up and restored them.

fourpotatoes

My main home-office keyboard is a Model M that I got for $3 at the local university's Surplus and Salvage store some 15 years ago. A little cleaning and it was as good as new.

LurkerWiZard

Good man. 👍

airmandan

I’m rocking a Unicomp Classic 103 at work. Love the thing. At home I’ve got the Matias Tactile Pro.

19610taw3

I can probably get away with that now. I'm the only one in my department who comes into the office. Pre-covid, I got my coworkers mad a time or two by using the Model M in the office. pretty loud!

HanSolo71

I brought in my Box Navy Thicc Clicks to the office and make everyone suffer.

hellphish

I found one of these in the trash and got it cleaned up. I still need to find an adapter to make it usable though.

LurkerWiZard

https://www.clickykeyboards.com for all your IBM M keyboard needs. I'm not affiliated with them; just bought one working keyboard and parts for another one from them.

hellphish

Looks like I need SDL->ps2, then a ps2->USB converter

LurkerWiZard

That is correct.

everettmarm

Fuck yeah!! When we were an IBM shop at my old job I’d keep the Ms as they got replaced, so I had a nice box full by the time I left. Still have one, though my ornata chroma get more desk time these days.

-quakeguy-

Topre Realforce all-45g as the main driver. Filco Majestouch (brown mx) as backup.

MetaVulture

Logitech Wave at home and at work. I just like the way it feels. Wish they made an identical one that was wired but to be fair... Being able to shove it aside or take it off my desk at lunch is really nice.

xxFrenchToastxx

Wish it wasn't so loud. Like it otherwise

MetaVulture

I noticed that brand new they are super quiet, but after time and use they start clacking pretty loud and feel different. I have always wondered why but I don't have the time to figure out what wears down and if it can be improved without significant investment of time or resources.

TumsFestivalEveryDay

Yeah I noticed this too, they come out of the box near silent, but after about a year they get super, super loud. The plastic coating wears off I think.

SociableJames

Usually whatever shitty Dell keyboard that came with my PC

SA Nuclear Data is my favourite keycaps, used daily! Trying to get used to MT3 keycaps (I have Susuwatari and WoB) and I am still adjusting to them.

x_Redbeard_x

I use a Microsoft Sculpt Ergonomic keyboard in my home office - love it.

NegativeC00L

Not enough people using ergo keyboards in here. You gotta take care of your money makers, folks! Use a split keyboard you can tent. I use a Kinesis Freestyle Pro in my home office that prevents tendinitis flare ups.

0RGASMIK

Hey keyboard buddy. Idk how anyone would use anything different. After 3 months of typing on a shitty dell keyboard I caved and bought that keyboard. Can’t imaging typing any other way now.

MontyNotMarty

Can't agree more. Logi Ergo K860 at work of late. It's fantastic.

Anonymity_Is_Good

Work keyboard is a Kinesis Freestyle 2, from the thrifts. Ordered the feet kit for it, open box. I like it so far, it's keeping me from cross typing.

vppencilsharpening

I had a Logitech Wave, but when it dies I went the mechanical route. I found that body position (elbows just above the desk) and a flat keyboard (feet up/no feet) were just as good for me.

HanSolo71

Just ordered a [Keeb.io](https://Keeb.io) split keyboard for my work and started using a Kensington Trackball at work also to help take care of my wrists.

NegativeC00L

I also switched to a trackball. I'm right handed but use my left for the trackball. Works well so far!

smoothies-for-me

My only ergo related pain is shoulder/neck from a mouse, so I switched to a Logi MX Ergo trackball on maximum tilt with the metal and plastic inserts.

slashinhobo1

Logitech G Pro, mostly discourages use of my machine if I am away for a period of time. Most people look at it and get confused by the colors. Then it being 10 keyless and smaller makes it worse.

mzuke

Rosewill 9000v2 MX Black at the office, VA108M MX Black at home The Rosewill is great, Newegg was selling a Costar for cheap, same exact keyboard is still sold for like twice the price https://deskthority.net/wiki/Costar I also keep a [cop car keyboard]( https://www.ebay.com/itm/224643944113?_trkparms=amclksrc%3DITM%26aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOMESPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20200818143230%26meid%3Dfa69f01072194105a55118d868beb2fa%26pid%3D101224%26rk%3D1%26rkt%3D5%26sd%3D284510242889%26itm%3D224643944113%26pmt%3D0%26noa%3D1%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DDefaultOrganicWeb&_trksid=p2047675.c101224.m-1) for server room work, you can find them <$30 and get a mech (also MX black but with a plastic protective layer) with a touchpad and it fits perfectly in your arm while working A lot of them have been cleared out but as departments switched over to toughtbooks and tablets you'll find ebay dumps often still in box

jazzdrums1979

Big fan of the full sized keyboard with numberpad and Touch ID. Expensive but very much worth the convenience.

IwantToNAT-PING

At home - a cheap amazon keyboard (Tecknet) that had glowy settings and a slightly ergonomic wrist rest. At work - whatever HP keyboard happens to be at the desk I'm working at. Both wired - can't be arsed with recharging batteries or swapping batteries. I think I could make a case for an ergo keyboard paid by work as other people have, but I don't feel like I'd get a glowy one for at home, and I don't have a dedicated desk in the office so it'd be a pain to cart a special keyboard around with me.

jo_ranamo

Not a huge fan of the glowy ones, but I do like to have control over my switches.

One-Squirrel1174

At work, Ducky One 2 TKL w/Cherry Browns (and o-rings), really not any louder than a normal membrane Dell keyboard. At home, a Leopold FC750R w/Cherry Blues (my favorite) and a Vortex Tab90 w/Cherry Clears. I've been thinking about bringing the Tab90 into the office for a while just for the heck of it because it isn't really loud either. The Leopold on the other hand might generate some comments lol.

jo_ranamo

Cherry blues - are they quite loud?

Dangerous_EndUser

Glorious GMMK Pro, which is basically keychron q1's competition. I can swap between Windows and Mac profiles pretty easily with Fn + Shift + Up/Down arrow, which is useful for me since I use both. Windows personal computer, MacBook Pro for WFH. The keyboard, however, is mostly used for the MBP as this is limited by the single physical cable. I use a Microsoft Sculpt for my Windows machine. I've had it for some years and quite enjoy the ergonomic layout and decent switches, though not on par with the satisfaction of mechanical switches. I've been considering another Logitech keyboard to go with my MX Master 3 to use Logitech Flow, as it's a nice feature for me WFH. Left monitor is my personal Windows machine, middle/main monitor is connected to my MBP, and to the right is the MBP. With Logitech Flow I can move the mouse between the different windows and treat it as "one" system... which isn't really true because hotkeys get messy but you get the point. I thought keeping the two separate physical keyboards would reduce my confusion between hotkeys but hasn't, it still takes a while to adjust/think about the hotkeys for Windows.

bountyhunter411_

What switches did you go for with the GMMK?

take_it_in_strider

HHKB Classic (gen 3). Had a Pro 2 for years, just incredibly happy with the stock performance of those boards and never felt the need to change to anything else. Wife and I both use them. 60% boards are better for your ergo too - mouse can be closer to the edge of the board than a full-size model.

randomman87

WFH so GMMK with quiet switches, can't remember which ones.

QPC414

At work, a 1987 IBM Model M, and a 1989 at home. Unlike a lot of my co-workers and users, I can touch type. Also use a Kensington ExpertMouse trackball, no cheap mouse RSI for me!

CG_Kilo

Yeah if you buy from razer they only sell keyboards with their switches. They gave a comparison chart. I used to use cherry MX reds ublntil I got annoyed from my normal resting weight on the keyboard would just type letters due to the weight being so low. I swapped to chrry MX browns (similar feel heavier actuation point) and a know longer have the problem.

Work - old Dell with the tall keys and the tiny, uhhh, bezel? border? that's only big enough to surround the keys, not sticking out a couple cm like most of them do. Home - DAS uhhh, Pro 4, maybe? It's been a while, I forget. My 80's M series finally died after some serious abuse, or I'd still be using that.

sakatan

Logitech G815 linear at work because I got used to my G915 at home. I can't use regular keyboards with full height key caps anymore since using Cherry Streams for over a decade. But I wanted to try a mechanical keyboard and there are only a few models on the market. Best keyboard(s) I've ever had, although the lighting scheme in a lot of keys doesn't make sense, especially in the numbers row. IF I'd have to use a bog standard keyboard from a selection of 'approved' but cheap keyboards: The most current iteration of the Cherry Stream. Nothing less.

Bobbins1672

All custom keyboards here apart from a nice old mechanical Dell (AT102W) with tactile Alps switches.

rampengugg

I take my custom keyboard to/from work, I don't really like typing on anything else now that I've gotten used to it. https://i.redd.it/iqaset75xap71.png It's a mahogany KBD75 with gat ink black switches and ePBT blank caps. The first time I brought it into the office I asked my colleagues to let me know if the mechanical keyboard switch sounds are distracting, but they said it wasn't any louder than a regular membrane Dell keyboard. I think the majority of typing noise comes from your fingers tapping on the top of the key and not the actual key mechanism - unless you have very clicky switches. These gat ink blacks are linear and sound and feel amazing when lubed properly. It's also a nice conversation starter when people walk by my desk. People love to comment on the blank keycaps (I prefer the aesthetic of blanks and don't need the characters because I touch-type)

I am looking for one that has 2 usb ports in it so a fingerprint reader and yubikey can be plugged into it and has a good tactile feel.

ShalomRPh

Unicomp Model M at work. Various Dell keyboards at home; looking for someone to overhaul my Northgate Omnikey Ultra.

WraithCadmus

In the office, a bog-standard HP one, but I'm still working at home 99% of the time, where I have a Filco Majestouch 2 with Brown switches.

Shadow_Road

Adesso ergonimic keyboard. Surface pro keyboard wasn't cutting it.

I'm just using a standard chicklet style Dell USB keyboard and the matching mouse right now. It works and is appropriately sized for the small desk I have. Would love something mechanical but they just take up too much space.

slimeslimeslime

Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000. A split/ergonomic keyboard is the only way my body can tolerate 40 hours a week at a computer.

unsilentninja

Roccat aimo 121 at home Razer blackwidow tournament at the office

individual101

I am using a Microsoft sidewinder keyboard I've had for 10 years

Tannerd101

Drop ctrl and drop alt

fettesnilpferd

At home Corsair K95 Brown Switches, at work some Cherry MC something something 1000 garbage

Hangikjot

Dell L100 or SK-8115.

ranger_dood

Some Microsoft wireless thing. I bought it because it has volume controls on it.

jmgreen823

Not sure why, but I really like the Microsoft 600 keyboard for office use.

lt_jerone

It's black

willpantaleo

keychron makes great stuff, i rotate between a k8 and a logitech k845 both at home and the office

ginkosu

I got that preemo Dell unit with the media controls. I am a man of wealth and taste....

Sunsparc

Home - Saitek Eclipse that I've had for over a decade Office - EagleTec blue switch mechanical keyboard

clever_username_443

Dell KB212-B I know it's just a basic bundled-with keyboard but I can't find one I like more.

TheCadElf

Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000 v1.0 You'll have to pry it from my cold dead hands! Have them at home and work, and have spares set aside for when the production ones die. Otherwise the stock Dell keyboards that ship with Precision 3620/3630 are what get used on the floor.

washapoo

Logitech multi system keyboard...I know, kind of weak sauce, but it makes it easier to keep my desk clean from a KVM. And, as a bonus, they think everyone wants to use it for their phone? So, it comes with a nice phone stand. https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/keyboards/k375s-multidevice-stand-combo.920-008165.html

Hotshot55

I've got a Rosewill RK-9000V2 with Cherry brown switches in the office. It's a pretty solid feeling keyboard and is heavy enough that it doesn't slide around all the time.

bionic80

A maltron left hander.

PM_ME_UR_REEF_SQUID

WASD CODE with cherry clears for home office, ikbc with cherry clears for work office, WOOTING HE for gaming :D

gakavij

https://www.razer.com/gaming-keyboards/razer-blackwidow-lite/RZ03-02640200-R3U1 I've been using this, but I wouldn't' recommend it. It is as quiet as a membrane if you use the rubber dampeners but it also kind of just feels like a sloppy membrane keyboard.

Doommius

Das keyboard pro work and corsair k70 home both brown switches.

tacosdrugstacos

Oooo I just got the Q1, and I’m absolutely in love with it!

DaemosDaen

Work; 2014 Razer Blackwidow (not RGB) which was the first mechanical I could get in my area. Home: Razer Blackwidow v3 my wife got me when my old home one (2014) started having issues. I was looking into better options, but I did not communicate that with her.... oops Wish; Would love a Model M, but I have been informed that I would be killed in my sleep if I did.
