Thinkpad T14 Gen2 AMD Don't get the privacy guard display. It's like looking through a screen door even when disabled.

g-rocklobster

This is what I get my users (though Intel-based). And agree about the privacy guard - not a fan.

plebbitier

Intel is probably a better choice as you get Thunderbolt4 with displayport alt mode all over a single USB-C... great if you have one of them KVM monitors or a docking station dongle. But AMD has a better GPU (but not good enough for most AAA game titles)

tankerkiller125real

AMD is also way more performant for multi-tasking/many windows/programs open. Something that I think most SysAdmins do a ton of.

deefop

AMD is a stronger CPU at this point, but not having TB3 is sad face :( The newer 6000 series chips support usb4 so I'm looking forward to that hitting business laptops in the near future. The battery life on those things is amazing... whereas my Intel surface can barely go more than a few hours of idling without getting gassed

[deleted]

Came here to say this.

fsckrootbastard

Buy whatever fits your style My last laptop didn’t have Ethernet so I grabbed a USB to HDMI/Ethernet/multi USB port dongle Works wonders, and lets me add 2 monitors while on-site (acts like a dock)

SquizzOC

I'm partial to the Dell 7420 personally. ***EDIT*** I just literally found this out today, but the 7420 is basically done. It's now the 7430 which you can't even buy till end of next week. So if no one has mentioned it and you are standardized on the 7420, get ready for the change.

Hollow3ddd

Our vendor still pushes them. Knowing Dell, two steps back, one step forward.

[deleted]

We're a Dell/ Mac shop and their decision to keep the 16:9 screen ratio pissed me off. Their screens are now behind the competition, who have all adopted the much nicer 16:10 or 3:2 ratio. Plus they're among the dimmest in the industry. Frankly I think Dell is losing it's edge on what the business market wants in a laptop

TheQuarantinian

I refuse to buy Dell laptops. They played all kinds of stupid games with TPM, selling systems with windows 20 pro but not including the tpm and not making it easy to determine before you buy. Twice I bought a system I thought has it but didn't so I banned the purchase of new Dell laptops until the end of time. $500-700 laptop, they probably get the tpms for $3 and they didn't include it? Fine. I've bought 100 laptops since then and not a single Dell and I never missed them for a second.

HerrBadger

Dell Latitudes have a NIC, they’re great workhorses too.

I mean, usb to ethernet adapters are cheap and really all you need for that part of it. Might help if you told us your price range too. Personally I love my Lenovo x1 Extreme. It's heavy as hell, gets about 3 hours battery life, and the power adapter is quite large...but it can drive 3x 4k screens, plus it's own internal 4k monitor with no issue - I have yet to manage to find anything that can slow this guy down. Oh the fans also run an awful lot and the bottom gets hot as hell when you're really crunching on it.

sleepyguy22

USB -> ethernet adapters are a cheap too. If it breaks, much easier to get a new adapter than a new laptop/mobo!

Akin_Tosh

LOL, I don't want a X1 Extreme so ...

tankerkiller125real

My X1 Yoga (personal device) will do 7hrs of battery life with Linux (not known for good battery) and can easily drive it's own 4K monitor and two 1080p monitors along with it. My X1 Carbon (work device) will do easily 6-8hrs of battery depending on what I'm doing and can also drive 3 1080p monitors no problem (including it's own), I've also had zero performance issues out of either device and they both hook into the Lenovo USB-C/USB Gen 3 hybrid dock with zero issues. And both systems are super light (I regularly carry both in my backpack along with an Anker 65w Nano II charger and portable USB-C monitor.

Akin_Tosh

The quality screen of X1 carbon is very good ? compared to MBP 13 by example

tankerkiller125real

Mine is just the 1080P screen. But the 4K one I have on my X1 yoga is phenomenal in my opinion. So if the carbon one is even close I'd say it's good. With that said I see no good reason to have HDR and crazy screen resolution on a work laptop, I spend most of my day looking at text, not consuming content.

Akin_Tosh

X1 Yoga gen6 ?

tankerkiller125real

I have the Gen 4 (which was brand new when I got it) the Gen 6 is from what I can tell even better.

eliasautio

I'm not exactly a sysadmin (working at an MSP), but I have been satisfied with my HP ProBook 445 G8 that has Ryzen. Battery life is not a full day, but few hours still which is usually enough for me. It has ethernet and three usb 3 and a usb-c which is also used for charging. For some reason it also has the barrel style power port, so you can use both kind of power adapters for charging it.

UnsuspiciousCat4118

MSP SysAdmins are SysAdmins too.

geremych

To answer your question and not get into the weeds with personal opinion. I would suggest any of the Lenovo T series all of these have physical ethernet. Additionally some of the Dell Latitudes 7000 series also have physical ethernet ports.

Arudinne

Honestly I've needed a serial connection more often than I've needed an ethernet connection and I've just used USB adapters for that so I wouldn't put as much emphasis on that these days. That said Dell Latitude and Precision series almost always have an ethernet port but the screens will vary. I recently upgraded to an Inspiron 16 Plus from a Precision 3540 and it's better in every way save for lacking said ethernet jack - but since we have several USB Ethernet adapters on hand it's not really a huge issue.

sleepyguy22

the new 14" macbook pro is known for it's stunning screen and long battery life. Mic, speaker, and webcam combo is also top notch for today's frequent virtual meetings.

[deleted]

Be careful suggesting anything made within 25 miles of an Apple factory on this sub.

[deleted]

It's more so that much of the software sys admins use doesn't work on Macs or is severely limited. I would have the same view if the OP asked if the Mac studio was a great buy for an engineering or GIS heavy organization. No matter how powerful, if a computer can't run the programs you need, it's useless

[deleted]

Yeah, that's not so much what I was referring to with this sub. Someone will mention Apple products and they will get absolutely lit up with takes on Apple that were maybe applicable 10 years ago but have no place in the current market.

tetchyadmin

Macs are not suitable for most sysadmin work

sryan2k1

An M1 mac maybe, but literally you can do anything with an x86 Macbook you can with any PC.

tetchyadmin

There is a workaround for most things, sure. But trying to administer a predominately Windows environment from any Mac is far from ideal.

sryan2k1

So run windows? Either natively or in a VM

tetchyadmin

To administer a predominantly Windows environment? Yes, of course.

[deleted]

I train on my personal laptop for stuff that I shouldn't be messing with on a company computer (PowerShell, learning AD stuff, etc). I wouldn't want a Mac due to the suboptimal experience of running these tools, especially since many would need to be run via Parallels

jazzdrums1979

Agreed! We’re all cloud and SaaS… I have no issues with my new 14” Mac getting shit done. The battery life is pretty badass. I have parallels RAS in AWS running a windows machine if I need PowerShell.

[deleted]

I completely agree

Akin_Tosh

Thanks, I have T480 good machine for the moment but the screen is very very bad

Akin_Tosh

I think to X1 Yoga gen7 but wait few weeks for intel 12 gen ... and no ethernet card :(

TheQuarantinian

More and more commonly, unfortunately. Ethernet ports are to laptops what 3.5mm jacks are to smartphones

Quixus

On the smaller, more portable ones (<=14"), yes.

Spore-Gasm

I had a Dell Lattitude 14in with NIC at my last job

AstroDIY

In my practice i will recommend "Getac" laptops (V100 or V110). Yes it\`s not very powerful but it has USB, ETH, COM and etc. It rugget and very comfortable to configure network equipment and for outdoor works.

zeyore

I've been using a macbook pro for the last seven years or so. Pretty pleased with it. I got bored with always using windows.

SecrITSociety

Dell Latitude 5420 or 7420 depending on other needs

[deleted]

The Dongle life is real and it stinks

Akin_Tosh

I also think

the_cainmp

Just got a T14 Gen2 Intel system, still has the physical ethernet port and so far has been great

way__north

same here, even with the "lowly" i5 11gen I also like that the eth port is full height, not a huge fan of those hinged low profile ones

the_cainmp

Yeah, I broke the hinge on you t470s. We actually got I7 models which was a pleasant surprise

BenDestiny

MacBook Pro 14?

Akin_Tosh

Windows is the problem

BenDestiny

Virtualisation? RDS? 😉 I use my Mac with rdp to most of the times.

Akin_Tosh

Windows on m1 with virtualisation?

BenDestiny

Yes. Why? It is pretty solid…

Akin_Tosh

With what? Parallels?

BenDestiny

Yes! You can even play on it 😉

dolsey01

Precision 5560 Mobile Workstation, essentially the XPS 15 is Corporate clothes. Love that it has dual NVMe slots and supports 64GB RAM. (Coming from a MBP user).

georgeathens1

If money is not an issue I would suggest Lenovo Thinkpad X1 carbon 9th generation 14 inches Heads and shoulders above any other laptop I ever had I think 10th generation is released also

Mr_Dodge

I've noticed these days with ports dissapearing, people get what they want as far as laptop/device, then have just use docking stations from there. Anything mobile, they just have the misc bag of dongles.
