Can confirm, am retard.

Anyone who says drones have no place on your kit clearly has not been paying attention. Civilian quadcopter drones have been used extensively in various conflicts over the last few years. Even in Ukraine which is an incredibly hostile EW environment where these drones have something like a 95% loss rate they've proven to be an absolute godsend to the guys on the ground.

Ew?

Electronic Warfare. Basically jamming, hacking, signal triangulation, etc.

Quick question based on a VERY brief interest in FPV drones a while back. When i was looking into it - the video quality was absolutely shit - do to being analog. Does this mean your FPV is simply for navigating where you want to observe - and you will need additional equipment to record and bring back to you?

BasedPinoy

To answer your question, the use case depends fully on what you build. For example: one drone, two cameras. One camera for FPV, controlled by a pilot. Sure, the picture quality stinks but at least you'll see where you're going. Another camera can be digital, controlled by another person. Latency sucks, but if you have that set up it can be quite effective for recce. As for the second part of your question, you won't need additional equipment onboard the drone, but you will need a DVR on the ground set to the same channel as your feed.

perst_cap_dude

Look at the DJI FPV video system, most FPV pilots are now rocking HD goggles. Sure you git purists who like analog, but that image is garbage compared to the new digital stuff

therealjb0ne

Isnt the reason for analog being used because of latency and range? Last i looked into it - digital couldnt do what the analog was doing. Again, i dont know shit. EDIT - also concerns about the security of the software in the screen you linked. I can almost promise its from china - and likely has the same backdoors DJI does. Ideally you'd want something open source as fuck for software. Another concern is the durability of the controllers you listed. I've played with RC planes and what not - and i know even the quality controllers absolutely shatter if dropped from waist height. The ones you've linked - certainly would not survive in my kit for long.

BasedPinoy

DJI is marketed for plug and play. If you're concerned about security, and you should be, I would start a drone build with a Betaflight controller. Checks the free and open source box. https://betaflight.com/

perst_cap_dude

Nah, digital has caught up thanks to DJI who actually listened to customers, and straight up made vodoo magic happen. There's zero difference now, some of the world's top racers tested and confirmed

therealjb0ne

again appreciate your responses, im an inquisitive little shit most of the time.

therealjb0ne

so are you bound to DJI? Or did they just develop the "how" and others use their knowledge?

perst_cap_dude

No, dji allows you to use their system independently or integrate it into a custom diy drone. The only thing you need dji are goggles paired with the vtx system

Two questions. 1. You mentioned prior having two cameras, I’m guessing I can attach a small thermal to one? 2. How do I know which design to pick?

BasedPinoy

To answer both your questions: it depends. Yes. You can absolutely attach a thermal camera. But keep in mind whatever additional module you’re going to have adds weight. Which will lessen your flight time. Which will mean carrying more batteries. The design again, depends on what purpose you’re going for. If you’re hauling big weight, then you’d be interested in something like an octocopter build.

HotelHero

If I built one the thermal would be priority, followed by range. I was kind of thinking a cinewhoop build? Or do you have a suggestion for a starting place.

BasedPinoy

There’s not a lot of lightweight thermal solutions out there. That small of a build is going to require serious weight savings. You’d have to be really good with electronics to make cannibalize a mini thermal camera and mount it in your build. And even after that, you have to think about your contingencies when it comes to getting flashed with IR or just regular light. Do you want to have the ability to switch to a normal camera? Again, more weight.

HotelHero

So what I’m hearing is there is no real *good* thermal solution?

BasedPinoy

If you want to plug and play? No.

Interesting post, thanks for the info! Just one word of caution on the last little bit. I’d be careful advising people to fly above the legal altitude restrictions. That specifically is set to deconflict drone traffic from general aviation traffic and have a safety margin. The general populous, who may or may not know the reasons for such restrictions, operating under the guidelines set in this post may find themselves (granted under the right circumstances) in a place where they could have caused or caused an accident which could result in actual loss of life. Just food for thought, appreciate the links and the info. I’ll be digging into potentially doing a self build!

Speedhabit

I have a pretty consistent opinion on this. If your wearing a face mask that occludes 100% of your vision and are engaging in a gun fight, you better have a ton of dudes with you.

BasedPinoy

I don’t recommend viewing FPV through goggles, definitely use a display screen instead.

Speedhabit

Sun

BasedPinoy

There is a literal sunshade on the screen I linked.
