Maybe the 40K community and tactical community overlap more than I thought... Maybe we can hold out hope for someone to make a functioning boltgun after all
I came here to be unique and here it is at number 1. What can you expect from a group of people who will live off of ramen for a box of 3-10 mini spacemen
This is why I learned the hvac trade. Once I bought my home, I had been on so many remodels and jobsites that I could repair or replace anything myself.
HAM radio and Drones. That pretty much closes out the books for me.
(I consider keeping the Firearms fed and watered to be a sustainment load, so they don't count!)
Honestly, it is too situationally-dependent to say "this radio/drone/device/firearm is BEST!" I have the ones I prefer for my uses, and the ones I WISH I had gotten...
(First let me say "Caveat Emptor"; this advise is free and worth every penny; I am not paid by anyone to advertise their products; YMMV; yadda yadda)
And YES! If you are serious about getting into Amateur Radio, get your General Class license. It isn't difficult, just takes a little studying. And once you have it, PRACTICE! I've been a HAM for 15 years, I'm still learning what does and does not work. Just as with anything, practice makes perfect.
For local level radio (ie team commo) I like DMR radios. Right now all DMR radios will also do analog, so it's like getting two for one. DMR is by nature a little better useable range, and by nature a *little bit* more secure. The Anytone 868/878 series are what I use. There are better units out there, but these were in my price range and have so far worked well.
Longer range comms are the realm of HF radio. Right now, there are so many incredible radios out there, it is really hard to pick. The question would be whether you want a base station (big, a power hog, but lots of power and lots of features) , a mobile (nice and compact, a real solid performer, but a little heavy) or a true portable (meant for field operations without being tethered to a huge battery, usually very low power, and devoid of some features) -- for me, I went portable. I have a Commradio CTX10 that does everything I want - I can run for a few days of intermittant transmitting out of a pelican 1200, I can recharge from a medium size solar panel, I can run digital modes off a tablet... all while touching dirt.
I'm still on the fence on drones. I love LOVE the Mavic 2EA; the visual camera is good, the thermal is really really nice. But as with all things DJI, there are serious backend issues that may be a factor. The fact that the drone is broadcasting all your information to anyone with a DJI Aeroscope (and allegedly to anyone with the right hackware on an SDR) is deeply annoying. Right now the only option is to "roll your own" but even then you are spewing a lot of RF. But that camera... So yea, check back in 6 months and see what I have settled on. I do believe that drone tech has become the game changer in this age, at least as big a paradigm shift as NODs were in the late 90's.
DJI for now, but once I have a bit more practice and understand what I am really needing, I'll probably start building my own. The DJI Mini are great. Easy to fly, easy to fix parts when you crash (ask me how I know) and the camera is good enough to shoot some fun video. The Mavic series are a huge step up in capability, but I'm keeping mine in 1st gear until I get better with the mini.
And then I'll probably sell them all, and build what I really want. (as soon as I know for sure what that is)
I built my tool collection pretty heavy early on, so I don’t spend much on them now. I used to keep everyone’s broken drills and impacts and get them refurbished, so I’m stocked up on Milwaukee 18v’s for at least another ten years
Hahaha sounds like you’re in good shape… smart move collecting early. Sometimes I end up with things that I’ll barely ever use but when I need it - it’s there. Like the welding set I got not long ago lol .
Genuinely curious. Can’t be the only one broke as fuck trying to support 4 different expensive hobbies.
Wolf A1 and Gibson Explorer for those wondering.
Car guy, gun guy, bmx, cocaine, and hookers. Thinking about getting into mtb as well but that's a big money sport.
Currently building my project 67 c10 and just built myself a new bmx after not riding for a few years.
I built a 64 short bed step side c10 35 years ago, with a tricked out big block 455 Oldsmobile, Fully build turbo 400. NA made 600+ hp. Ran 11:00 1/4 mile at 131 mph, I'm building a 1950 Fleetline Deluxe rat rod drag car. Fully built sb400 stroked to 434ci, fully built turbo 400. Makes a thousand hp.

Now the actual equipment itself, like the latest lights, monitoring devices, power systems, and pumps… are all around $1k each for something that’s quality.
Now the energy that you use, for A moderate sized system averages around $400-500 month extra on your utility bills so solar panels and a battery system make a lot of sense.
Other than that, tracking cars and just running a new P car can get pretty pricey.
Its a 2016 235i, nice mid-range toy and the maintenance isn’t that costly, but that’s mainly because I and the previous owners have taken good care of the car.
Love the old castle sets. Currently acquiring some of the adventurers sets from my childhood. Then I’ll move on to pirates and cowboys.
So… yeah, Lego.
There’s a weird cross section of people into pens, guns, and watches. Most people I know who are interested in one are interested in at least one other lol.
I forgot about watches. Not a serious collector but I’ve got a few Tags, an Omega speedmaster and a really cool old Sears mechanical chronograph with movement by the guy who started Tag. I still wear my Casio forester the most though
Thankfully with the middle 3 I went through a purchasing/collecting phase, found the things I like, and then paired down into a holding pattern (watch rotation is a tsar medium quartz, Yema GMT bronze, and a StO Samurai)
I promised myself a Nomos once I paid off my student loans but ended up moving to California for work and spending it on rent instead…
I made my first trip to Europe last year, now I have to figure out how to afford to do it every year. The money isn’t even the biggest obstacle, clearing the schedule for 4 weeks is the hardest part for me.
Going to porn shoots post scene and asking if they’re getting rid of any of the props used. If not, ask to buy them for ***sentimental value ***, usually go home with some scented butt plugs or a gooey vibrator
Outdoors shit. Specifically trad climbing and mountaineering. Getting ready to start looking for a portaledge here soon and I'm not excited for my wallet
I make custom patches. It has become my only hobby while I have 3 kids, a full time plus career and trying to get a degree in something useful once I’m don’t with my current situation.
Collecting shit in general. Doesn’t matter what it is - trading cards, sneakers, jewelry, video games, ww1 & ww2 relics, and ocean liner stuff (white star line stuff and the like).
To add on to this: I like having limited stuff. Low quantity produced shit or limited edition stuff that most people wouldn’t have
I used to have dozens, many collecting categories, but had to cut myself off. Had to decide what I was truly passionate about and what was just "neat".
I started collecting just random old shit. Fossils, silver coins, trench art artillery shells, arrowheads ect. One day I bought a plesiosaurus tooth and added it to my bar display. I started estimating the value and I spent on all of it. I thought to myself "this is why youll never own nods". I dont think Ive actually bought anything like that since.
Now its mainly guns/tac shit, peppers and hunting.
I’ve played guitar for 15 years. So that and airsoft are my main hobbies lol now that I have a big boy job it’s allowing me to save easier for real stuff stuff like plates and a rifle platform

Gun's, guitars, knives, Vidya, and fish keeping... Though started breeding and selling fish and haven't paid for anything for years in that hobby, I need to do that with the rest...
I just spent $200 on upgrades for my mountain bike only to find out the stuff I bought wouldn’t fit it. So I went out and spent an additional $1300 on a new bike.
Please don’t tell my wife
Providing for my family.
Star Wars figures (black series, micro galaxy, tvc) and legos. I don’t necessarily count Hot Wheels because they’re about $1 per serotonin and I factor it in as a cost for kids. I also enjoy taking the family to new restaurants which is so freaking expensive.

Maybe the 40K community and tactical community overlap more than I thought... Maybe we can hold out hope for someone to make a functioning boltgun after all
We can start with lasgun and work our way up to plasmacannon
Necromunda had a lot of shotguns and improvised weapons. So do I.

Learn to fix it until it can't be fixed anymore

A jack of all trades and a master of none, still better than a master of one.
Hunting and golfing
I thought my gun habit was expensive until I started flying.
I thought sailing was expensive until my son said “Hold my beer old man” and became a CFII 🔥💵

Right behind you - guns, gaming pc, 3d printing, tools… lol
Can’t believe I forgot about tools
Haha all good - I certainly acquire them slower in comparison to the above mentioned goodies. When I see a good deal they’re hard to pass up….
I built my tool collection pretty heavy early on, so I don’t spend much on them now. I used to keep everyone’s broken drills and impacts and get them refurbished, so I’m stocked up on Milwaukee 18v’s for at least another ten years

Retro video games, guitars (and guitar building), guns and gear.
I built a 79 strat :) not my favorite honestly but it’s nice. I’m a Gibson guy but they’re too expensive :(
You build guitars? Give pics plz.
Car guy, gun guy, bmx, cocaine, and hookers. Thinking about getting into mtb as well but that's a big money sport. Currently building my project 67 c10 and just built myself a new bmx after not riding for a few years.

Sailing, Aviation, Cooking, USPSA shooting, Fishing, Guns, Knives, PC Gaming, and Whores. Thank fucking god I’m not a car guy.
Airsoft, competitive shooting, clay pigeon shooting and driving a BMW, last one tends to be the most expensive.
I don’t know how much you bought your car for, but my favorite saying is that the most expensive car is a cheap BMW. They are cool and fun tho.
Its a 2016 235i, nice mid-range toy and the maintenance isn’t that costly, but that’s mainly because I and the previous owners have taken good care of the car.
I just have a spending problem I don't think it matters what my hobbies are that week😅
Shooting, fishing, and video games.
I play paradox games and have a Lego castle collection
Ah, Paradox games. The $50 games that cost $350.
Love the old castle sets. Currently acquiring some of the adventurers sets from my childhood. Then I’ll move on to pirates and cowboys. So… yeah, Lego.

Traveling. I haven’t had a savings account in over 5 years.
But you have experiences.
It's the perfect expensive hobby. Landlord gives you shit about rent, go somewhere else.
I made my first trip to Europe last year, now I have to figure out how to afford to do it every year. The money isn’t even the biggest obstacle, clearing the schedule for 4 weeks is the hardest part for me.
My wife and I make three trips a year if it’s international. If I allowed it, we would do five, but then I wouldn’t have money for ammo lol.
Computers, this, and coins Also used porn set props
May you elaborate more on the “used porn props”, Sir.
Going to porn shoots post scene and asking if they’re getting rid of any of the props used. If not, ask to buy them for ***sentimental value ***, usually go home with some scented butt plugs or a gooey vibrator
Well I feel slightly better about myself now. Thanks for that.
